Ask anyone about poetry and you’ll get 1 of 2 reactions. They either hate it or will try and quote you a favourite.
I couldn’t quote a favourite or tell you why poetry has recently taken pride of place on my bookshelves, but I will tell you that every so often an unassuming string of words captures my heart and holds on for dear life. Cameron Lincoln’s words have that effect. Whether I find it in his poetry, his stories or in our briefest of conversations, they resonate.
Sideways Rain is the latest addition to his literary collection, an eclectic mix of emotive words that somehow feel familiar, personal to the reader. For example,
Tell Me A Lie: Just 8 short lines, and yet they expose the vulnerabilities we try to hide, the lies we tell ourselves and how hard it is to believe anything different.
Restore: In finding the right one, with unwavering love and support, we’re never so broken we can’t be fixed.
Draw: We learn. Every inch, every curve, every line of those we love. The unknown becomes the familiar. Home I guess.
Vices: So passionate and raw. Primal even. A definition of lust and seduction.
Storm: How do you define someone that crashes into your life and changes everything? The answer is in 4 sentences.
Wasted: The end of a relationship is an emotional rollercoaster at best, but as the dust begins to settle, do we really think of it as time wasted or happy memories entwined with a learning curve?
This book builds a story of experiences and emotions we can all relate to. From the nights we lie awake dissecting our lives, loves and fears, to the days we’ve spent daydreaming of someone or yearning for something better.
It holds something special for everyone, not just poetry lovers. So tell me about your favourite poem and I’ll point you in the direction of Cameron Lincoln, I’m certain you’ll love him too.
Having enjoyed Cameron Lincoln’s work before, I knew that I was in for a treat with this latest collection of poetry. Lincoln is particularly clever with his use of metaphor and meter within his work, making his most introspective observations as well as his delightful descriptions of escapades of love and sex a lyrical journey. You don’t have to be a writer to appreciate Lincoln’s words. Only human.
One of my personal favorites in the book is a joint effort with fellow writer Fiona Summerville, the poem “Indelible” as the two harmonize with a literary duet tracing the power of words for two lovers writing from afar to begin their poetic love affair which becomes something much more (“pouring obscene promises in smudged trails / an illicit manifesto meant for their eyes alone / feverish scribbles keeping time…”).
I would say for someone unfamiliar with his poetry, I might recommend first some of Lincoln’s earlier works MINE: BODY & SOUL and SWEETEST NOTHINGS, the latter which has the added bonus of his storytelling through inventive short stories, too. (And for which I just realized I never did leave a high mark out on GoodReads and Amazon yet! Doh...next item on the list!) But SIDEWAYS RAIN is a treat in itself and worth the read! I look forward to strolling through whatever new storytelling forest Lincoln explores next.
Wonderful thought provoking encounters! Beautiful poetry!
I absolutely loved this collected poetry. Cameron Lincoln is a genius at weaving words together that are thought provoking to the reader. These collected poems are both beautiful in their simplicity and others in their pure depth of emotion and thought process. I have encountered so many new delights in this collection that I have added to my favourite works of Cameron poems such as Beatnik Heart, Restore, Sentence, Icarus, Zero G and Endurance just to name a few. Please check out this collection, I'm sat here writing this review in complete awe still at the diversity in subject content of Cameron Lincoln 's work. I will be rereading and treasuring this collection. This is another brilliantly crafted collection not to be passed by.
I have enjoyed reading Cameron Lincoln's poetry for quite some time. When I found out Cameron was publishing a book of poetry I knew it was one I had to read! If you enjoy poetry this book is a 5-star must read!
Short book of beautiful heartfelt poems on love, how endearing another person is, how important. Deeply touching, romantic, as he writes, “...a life without you.”, is indeed the longest sentence. One I can read again and again. My faves on pages: 13,30,38,41 and 50.
