Special Nuclear Issue. Lee Montgomerie gives us “War And/Or Peace”, a metaphysical journey to a military base which is a target for nuclear weapons and where Kevin’s refusal to collapse the wave function cannot oppose the Peace Wimmin. • A group of soldiers is on manoeuvres on the moors of England when the unthinkable happens. Their radiation bracelets blacken and death looms. How they react is the meat of their doctor’s report in the startling “Cube Root” by David Langford. Christopher Burns gives us another dark foray into the time after ‘Something Happened’, with the burial of a small girl and the discovery by the death photographer of her birthly affliction in “Fogged Plates”. • Brisen has been cyborged and his artificial eyes can now see the hidden substructures of the global DNA mind. As life’s programming leaves Earth the machines are the inheritors in “The Unfolding” by Bruce Sterling & John Shirley. Kite cadet Raoul has tendered his resignation from the Kite Corps and roams homeward before taking work as Kitemaster for the wealthy Kerosine keep. There the voluptuous Lady Kerosina ensnares him in a moral trap. “The Kitemistress” by Keith Roberts is another part of his novel Kiteworld. A mostly depressing issue with the last two tales highlights.
