When Lise, an embittered young woman in an exoskeleton due to chronic debilitation meets the sensory engineer Max, the naked anger and derision her visions exude, hints at her later stardom in the realm of virtual entertainments. Becoming a global phenomenon it gradually dawns on Max that she is using him for different reasons in “The Winter Market” by William Gibson. Great piece! When Jim meets the traveller from a parallel universe in the bar of the White Horse, he unwittingly helps him find the difference between the two, which he is assigned to catalogue in “The One And Only Tale From The White Horse” by John Brosnan (title which could be a nod to Clarke). A young man inherits his absent Greek father’s estate in Cyprus and finds “The Terrarium”, an acre of carefully modulated biosphere, through the glass of which he thinks he sees his supposedly dead father. A solid tale from Garry Kilworth. On a spaceship, surrounded by hundreds of incarnations of Granny Ariadne, of varying physical ages, her genetic inheritor makes a decision which thwarts her plans in the puzzling “A Multiplication Of Lives” by Diana Reed, and “The IBIS Experiment” by S. W. Widdowson takes us to the debriefing of a spaceship pilot whose experiences on the debut journey of a superfast and time-winding ship is, to the say the least, bizarre. Pretty good issue but weakened as it went along.
