Journalist Josh Tremaine is haunted—by his past. In the middle of nowhere, small town Cheston seemed the perfect place to hide—yet it has secrets of its own.
When a local girl turns up out of her grave, Josh starts digging for the truth—entirely against the advice of inconveniently attractive Police Officer Dan Weston, whom Josh doesn't know if he should trust.
Beneath the surface, someone is dying to ensure that the truth stays buried.
Nina del Arce writes supernatural thrillers and queer romance novellas. She finds her ideas in the middle of the night, where they’re usually coiled up in a comfortable darkness. It takes persuasion, sometimes, to make them assume the tangible form of words. That, a perhaps slightly larger than recommended amount of blackcurrant tea (her favourite), and a backdrop of suitably dramatic music.
When not writing (or sleeping, when the tea’s gone), Nina spends her days working as a medical scientist—though she firmly believes attempts at making long dead things come to life are best saved for fiction.

Nina del Arce's fiction debut, Cemetery Shift, is a supernatural thriller novella and the first installment in her Cheston Chronicles series. It follows journalist Josh Tremaine, who has recently moved to small town Cheston to escape his (secretive) past and decide how to move forward in his life.
First and foremost, I should stress that this was a very well-written novella in its own right. That being said, I thought it was exceptional for a fiction debut. It had everything thriller readers crave: quick pacing, surprising plot twists, and a chilling atmosphere.
As a protagonist, Josh was intriguing (What is he really trying to leave behind?) and felt three-dimensional and "real." I also found him a bit irritating ... in a good way! Despite the obvious danger, Josh kept making questionable decisions and getting himself in more trouble -- exactly as a main character should. My only critique is that I thought he accepted the supernatural elements of the story a bit too easily, but there could be hidden elements of his character that will explain his reaction in future books.
Overall, Nina del Arce did a fantastic job of introducing the readers to Josh and setting up the town of Cheston and its mysteries. I'm definitely looking forward to exploring more in the next book!

Imagine that you're on a roller coaster. One that has a really big drop after it goes higher and higher. Then after the first fall, it takes a few twists and turns and then by the end of it. You want to ride it again. Well that's how this book was for me.
As we leave the station we are following Josh Tremaine. A man who is hiding from his past and is making sure to be the village outsider in a small town/city called Cheston. One day he is walking through the local cemetery on his way to work at the local newspaper. He catches eye of a corpse that is not where it should be, above ground
The next thing we know, is that our poor good samaritan is now questioned and Josh is wondering if he is being accused of doing horrible things. When suddenly, the case is dropped. And instead of doing his best to forget all of it, such as locals would do in other somewhat creepy towns. *Cough* Widdershins *Cough* (I'll get to why I say creepy in a few moments) It seems his curiosity has gotten the better of him. As he looks into the identity of the corpse he found. The roller coaster is starting to be lifted up the rail. He's strapped in for the ride like we are.
As it gets higher and higher. We learn more about Josh and his past, why he is in Cheston in first place and we meet some of the local residents of Cheston. Some nice, some not so nice.
At the end of the ride, we are left standing and wondering more about our undead fiends. (Are they really fiends? Hard to say...) And as Josh finally lets go of his 'Schrödinger's ex' We will hopefully get some answers about the Undead. How they have come to be? See perhaps also if Josh can finally live his life again, make some friends and maybe, just maybe find love.
this was a fast paced.. easy read with a lot of fun twists and turns to surprise you.. it also had a little bit of creep to it which was alot of fun. i really enjoyed it and im glad i reviewed it
This is the first book in The Cheston Chronicles Series. A spellbinding book the writing was amazing. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters likeable. The characters were well developed and thought out. Josh Tremaine and Police Officer Dan Weston are the MC’s of this book. There was humor, cemetery, dead girl, reporter, Paris, police, undead and so much more in this book.
Here is a quote from the book, “Let’s get straight to the point, Mr. Tremaine. How did you know Beatrice Carlson?” “I didn’t.” “That’s not what you said in the cemetery,” she pointed out. A quick glance towards Weston resulted in him quickly shuffling through his papers, taking out a notepad and pen with which he started taking notes. Somehow, that made the situation feel more pressing—like I needed to watch my tongue a little more. I swallowed against the resulting tightness in my throat.”. There is more but you will need to read the book which I can recommend. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.
The beginning of series Cemetery Shift is a paranormal/supernatural m/m suspense. It promises to be an interesting journey with some possible romance in the future and the uncovering of a towns secrets or at least the cemeteries. The undead in this story are not really identified so are they vampires, ghosts, zombies, or what exactly. Hopefully we will find out in future installments. What happens when a reporter, a police detective, and the undead meet? Read this novella to find out the beginning of the Cheston Chronicles. An ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
2.5 stars Has a lovely creepy atmosphere and I liked the characters but I'm not really sure why the events that happened happened. I'm not sure I understand why the victim was killed or the motive of the villain. Because it seemed excessive. I'm not sure why the town council wields the kind of power that they do. I'm not sure what the reality of this world is. However, the feel of the story - spooky and gothic-y - was great. I'd read more by this author.
