Story 5,0/5
Charaktere 5,0/5
Zeichenstil 5,0/5
Gesamt 5,0/5

Now I gotta be honest; I like this series. I think it's good fun, nothing too amazing but nothing too bad, the art is honestly adorable and the characters are entertaining. However, I think that this came way too early in the series, thus my rating.

This book is the flashback episode. We see Im's past in egypt and what actually happened... and yeah, it's too early. The mystery was literally built up in this very book through the fight with Harugo, and then everything is told to us right after. You barely gave the readers the time to think about everything!

I also think the content of the flashback was a bit rushed. If we'd had more time with Im and Hinome, and seen the impact Djeser (is that how they say it in the english version?) had on him it would've given their friendship more depth. It's not bad as it is, but the whole backstory feels a bit rushed. I know mangas where an entire book is dedicated to flashbacks, this is like around half? There were better ways to introduce everything, make the revelations more shocking and give everything more depth.

As of now I don't think Im deserved this flashback, I was just starting to really get interested in his character. I think the way he enslaved the gods is just glossed over in a panel too? You'd think something like that would get a bit more attention brought to it, it's another sacrifice Im was making. Basically the pacing really hurt the story being told.

I liked Djeser, he's adorable, and past!Im emoted so much more, it's nice to see the toll everything took on him but it would've been more impactful if, again, this flashback had been told later. Harugo looks promising, he's not entirely like the revenge seeking dudes of this type, his devotion to religious and professional boundaries is a nice touch and I'm hoping to see more of him. Hinome wasn't there for long but I liked her speech with Harugo.

The art is again super nice, the scene after the ritual especially, I'm not really sure what the lines on the ceiling were meant to represent but they made it look otherwordly and oppressing, that whole area had a design that lent itself very well to that honestly.

Seeing the original manga idea was a nice touch but idk if it matches well with the rest.

It took me a while to read this volume but the simple reason is that I was really busy. The content itself to put it short is so touching, I wished I had more time to finish it sooner.

The 1st volume ended promisingly when that boy of the Amen Priesthood showed up. And I was really glad to learn more about this Priesthood in volume 2. Still, there are quite a lot mysteries left because actually the main subject of the soon-to-come meeting with an upper member who's Im's advocate was Im's past with prince Djoser who was an egyptian prince 3000 years ago. And what's going to be told in that story of Djoser's and Im's past will at least deeply touch the reader's heart. Mine felt so heavy in the end;;

Djoser is a character one must like, shining just as bright as the sun! I feel like next to him everyone can be happy and shine, too. He's charismatic and visionary. I never doubted, he could be a great pharao who brings his people and kingdom to prosperity. He had this can-do-attitude and felt unstoppable. And also, he more or less forced Im to become his friend. It was so wonderful to read these scenes of sunshine. There's no other way to describe it. But then....

I'm so mad about what happened, about their fates and everything. To me, the worst was to imagine how deeply deceived by literally everyone Djoser must have felt. His entire life and existence kind of were nothing but a lie. He'd lived on high hopes and managed to spread those amongst his people...just to learn, they actually all knew and lied straight to his face?! I could rage about this forever! How lonely he must have felt! And how scared!

Aside of Djoser's fate, the other thing that touches in me is how desperately Im attempted to save the situation and his friend. How much he was willing to give (not talking about sacrifices here), despite of everything he'd learnt. The actual outcome broke my heart. The magai, that god possessing Djoser and the actual world destroyed. Im's plan was so good but when the others intervened, it just had to fail ;;

//inhales deeply

I wish for both to be reunited! Is this even possible? I don't know. If not, I hope, Im can annihilate that fake god in Djoser and free his soul, so he can find peace! And before he goes off to heaven (or the like), I hope, Im gets a change to tell his friend what truly happened 3000 years ago. Pls, pls, pls!! At least, now I understand why Im had bonding problems with Hinome and why he reacted the way he reacted when they became friends.

I'm looking forward to volume 3 and can't await to see what'll happen now that Im's past was told. Will he truly return to egypt with his advocate Khonsu? And what does he plan to do to defeat the fake god possessing Djoser's sealed body?

Im's second volume tries its hand at emotional depth, however, fails miserably, with its art style being the only redeeming factor that's keeping it afloat.

While the previous volume was mostly introductory, this one took a head-first dive into the gruesome past of our main character. Why does everyone call him evil? What exactly did he do?

Problem is, Makoto Morishita reveals Im's dark past too early in the story. At this point, there hasn't been enough plot to cement the cast into their roles and give them the appropriate time to become welcome and liked by the reader. The second chunk of this volume focuses specifically on the backstory, where it introduces the themes of hope and friendship, followed by betrayal and denial. It tries to make us sympathetic towards Im and give us a clear understanding of his current goal. The latter is clear, however, the sympathy part is lackluster.

By the time this part of the story is finished, we have to be supposedly sad and supportive towards Im, however, given how quickly the plot is moving, and the small amount of time that we had with the story so far, there is no attachment to the characters, therefore, no emotional value is present. Simply put, it's not possible to feel anything towards Im's cruel past when we haven't even had the time to get used to him first.

Also, the first part of the volume doesn't do much either, except it introduces us to some more formulaic characters, that are completely boring from the get-go.

I still give credit to Morishita for her capabilities when it comes to the art. It's clean and she uses minimalism in the bigger panels to convey important moments, which I'm a fan of.

However, at the end of the day, the plot itself is still not doing it for me. It's predictable, formulaic, and leaves a lot to be desired.

Chronique complète :
https://sunread26.wordpress.com/2021/...

Extrait :

This volume kicks off with the rest of the fight between Im and Harugo, which is decent, but the real meat here comes when we delve back into Im's past. We've been told so often that he's this irredeemable, blasphemous monster, but in this section, we're shown the events that led to him being considered such a pariah. And...it's actually a pretty compelling backstory. Without spoiling anything, it's a tale of how no good deed goes unpunished, and it makes Im into a very sympathetic character--someone who only tried to help out a friend and was punished severely, and disproportionately for it.

While nothing really groundbreaking, Great Priest Imhotep continues to be an overlooked little gem of a manga. The characters are shaping up to be pretty nuanced, the action is pretty good, and the art continues to be really nice. This volume ends with an alternative one-shot beginning to the entire story, which is an...odd choice, but I can only imagine there was some sort of scheduling or time crunch, and Morishita had to put in something to make a deadline. Somewhat disappointing, but it doesn't ruin the experience. Volume 3 promises to get back to the actual story.

The second part of Im's history. This part is about his life in Faraon's Egypt time, and his friendship. It's not the best part, but very important to this story. I very like it, but this part is worest than first and other.
