Through Fire and Flame is a rethinking of the Italian Dante Alighieri's poem, Inferno, a journey through a more modern Hell. Awakening in a post-apocalyptic dreamscape, a confused, afraid, and overwhelmed narrator is rescued by Socrates, who leads the helpless survivor into Hell, the only chance of escaping the apocalypse.
On their journey, the duo encounter historical and modern figures, observing sentencing and punishment for the damned in the courts of Apathy, Arrogance, Fear, Deceit, Greed, Violence, and Hatred. Savage and graphic physical and psychological retribution is exacted from the incarcerated, and the narrator takes on the burden of their extensive and offensive sins. As the travelers absorb the historical weight of humanity's crimes, the narrator is forced to grapple with the nature of our world, how we arrived at it, and where we must go.
Compelling, controversial, and dark, Through Fire and Flame is socio-political commentary set in a dark and violent world.
Through Fire and Flame is a brilliant debut novel. Though the author takes the reader deep into the darkest depths of humanity, it is done with style and pace, enabling the reader to embark on a journey for which he/she will emerge enlightened. Well-written and moving, this book gets a full recommendation. For those worried about the darkness referenced in this and other reviews, rest assured this trip will be worthwhile as the novel provides a learned guide you may just have met before to accompany you.
