Rate this book
After their escape from Tamerlane’s hi-tech prison, and the defeat of Darius Drake's apocalyptic plans for the humanoid home-worlds, Titanya joins Sillow in becoming an agent of the Alliance.

Now partners, the brash, beautiful pirate queen, and the cowardly, chain smoking elf, take on their first official mission together, investigate the hijack of a prototype military stealth craft and its connection to the mysterious owner of a small mining operation.

Yet what begins as a simple undercover mission soon becomes something far more sinister as they find themselves caught up in one man’s obsession with ancient forces powerful enough to destroy them all.

I'm a college lecturer from England and a fan of all types of speculative fiction, most notably science fiction, horror & sword and sorcery fantasy. Where possible I try to blend these elements together in my own writing.

H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs were my first writing inspirations and more recently Frank Herbert and Clive Barker whose works I never grow tired of re-reading.

I live in the rainy city of Manchester with my wife and two young daughters, the elder of which is something of a budding writer herself.

The Prisoner of Valathia is a new Sillow and Titanya adventure, the silent and muscular Brok having been retired by the author for more than one story now. I admit, I like Titanya better, she is definitely able to interact with far more sparkling repartee and engage more into the adventures, while demonstrating a humour of her own.

This story is short and sweet, with the two on a mission to retrieve a missing stealth ship. As well, Sillow for the first time I can remember, undertakes a journey of a personal nature.

In this story, the author uses as few words as possible, which admirably leads to a lot in a short length, but also may cut out information that the reader may need to understand complex scenes. For example, I was still baffled, despite reading it twice, about the state of Sillow and the new Dragon spaceship… has the space ship been reduced to a thought of immense power as if it were corporeal; or has it been miniaturized to a model so small that it can enter someone’s bloodstream, and if so, is Sillow still standing by in a safe place, exchanging thoughts by telepathy and directing the tiny ship, or are they back to normal size and space?

Nonetheless, this new installment of Sillow’s adventures gives the reader what he wants—plenty of action, witty dialogue, speculative “what if” fiction in the science fiction genre, and some new concepts (a villain’s cyberborg body run within by metallic silver worms—ugh!).

The author's books always get an easy five star with me. I love the simplicity with which he writes his stories. And the added bonus of words that one might struggle to understand in a sci-fi book, already explained is well appreciated. I must say, reading this series, I wasn't a sci-fi fan but I think the author's book has made a fan of me. I was expecting Brok to make an appearance at some point, but the beautiful Titanya, made an adequate companion for Sillow, so I didn't really miss Brok, which reminded me a bit of Dr. Who and his numerous companions.
De Talmaine, is my kind of super-villain, his will had been taken over by the Sylvan demon, the prisoner of Valathia, who had taken over De Talmaine body and consciousness in order to free himself from its prison. However, with the help of Sillow and Dragon, we were able to meet just for a short moment, the real De Talmaine. The book kicked up a notch for me when Sillow and Titanya went undercover with De Talmaine, and the adventure felt so real in my mind's eye. What can I say, another brilliant book, written by a brilliant author. I really do admire the author's work, the book was so good, I wanted to read more, can't wait for the next book, I wonder what the mission would be.

The last book in the Dragon series is what I have come to expect from James McCormick. Great tight plot, well rounded very interesting characters and excellent crisp writing. I’m not really a fan of Sci-fi but couldn’t help but be drawn in by the author’s rendition of this genre.
We meet again the spunky little spacecraft Dragon who can communicate telepathically with its renegade owner Sillow the Sylvan, who is still trying to find a place he can fit in to. Dragon come under attack from the Teknavari, a mutant space parasite that feeds on crafts ultimately finding their way to a ship’s systems. Can Sylvan technology help it?

The years have passed and his companion Brok has been replaced with a gorgeous Amazonian Herkulan, Titanya. In this mission they are tasked with stopping a mercenary team from stealing a military stealth craft.
Once again James McCormick’s vivid imagination creates a myriad of wondrous characters and situations as the battle between good and evil rages.
Readers of the highest quality Sci-fi should not miss this book, which rounds off a brilliant series.

This is one really fun adventure with non-stop action and a lot of really cool concepts and tech. There are sentient pet plants, sentient spaceships, space-mutating viruses that feed on spaceships, and much more, and best of all, really cool alien species. The Sylvan alien, Sillow, at the center of the story was a really cool character to base a story on. He's a bit of a rogue smuggler.
