When Richard “Maverick” Helm walks out the gate of the state penitentiary, after four hard years inside, he doesn’t know what life he has left waiting for him. Abandoned by the love of his life, a stranger to his only child, Maverick turns to his club, the Brazen Bulls MC, and holds on.

But he’s not sure of the club any longer, either. The Bulls have changed since he went inside, and they’d all but forgotten him.

Before Maverick can find a life worth living, he must heal the family he’d had—his woman and his child—and he must find his fit with his brothers. To do either, he must remember the man he was, and decide who he wants to be.

The love of Jenny Wagner’s life promised her a beautiful future. He swore he’d be there for her and their daughter forever. He wanted to be her hero, and she believed that he would be. Then he left her alone before their baby was born—and what he did left Jenny’s life in ruins. She’ll never forgive him.

But she’s never stopped loving him. Her anger arises from that deep, abiding love, and the pain of its betrayal.

Before Jenny can open herself and her daughter to a new life with Maverick, she must learn to trust again, and to be with him the strong woman she’s become without him.

It takes only a moment of reunion for Jenny to remember their love—a love Maverick’s never forgotten. It takes much longer to overcome the obstacles of the past and find a way to make a future together.

Note: explicit sex and violence.

I was born and raised in the Midwest, but I was transplanted into the dusty soil of Northern California and have apparently taken root there. An inveterate geek and gamer, I am a fan of many things considered pop culture and maybe even lowbrow.

As a reader, my favorite genres are science fiction and fantasy, but as a writer, I've found my home in romance--or perhaps it's better to say simply "love stories." I have a yen to try other genres, too, at some point, but for now my muse wants to tell stories about lovers and families.

I write for the joy of it, and I write stories that I want to read. If others like them, too, that's just the cherry on top. I’m not interested in rules and formulae. I follow my muse and my characters and let them take me where they want to go, wherever that might be. I like big emotions, dark and light.

I like complicated characters with flaws and weaknesses as well as strengths, and I like each character’s strengths and weaknesses to be different from those of other characters. I’m much more concerned that my characters be interesting and diverse than that they be widely considered to be likable. I try to create people, not types.

Likewise, I want my stories each to be distinct from the others. Once I’ve told a story, I don’t want to tell it again. So even within a series, one of my books might be very different from the next. Some might be very dark, others equally mild.

That isn’t to say there aren’t trends and recurrences in my work. I’m drawn to certain themes and settings, and my muse has her favorite toys and tools. But I guard against those tendencies becoming a formula.

Things happen in our lives...We meet the one we love...We make promises we believe with all our heart. Our intentions are good... they are solid... and then Life takes a turn and we have to break those promises we made...

This concept of how to get back to the ones you love after a trust/promise like that has been broken is what we live through in this 3rd entry of the Brazen Bulls Series.

We have had bits and pieces of Maverick in the last book, Crash. Maverick was Gunner's Mentor and brought him into the Bulls. He was the one who put him up to get his patch...Gunner was the only one who kept in touch with him when he was locked up.

There is a lot to say about these two main characters, Maverick and Jenny. At their core, they both had a love that could not be destroyed... Period. The love survived a surprise baby, prison time, many extenuating circumstances and abandonment.

What their love had to do was show both of them things had changed...what was before could not be again...Their love had to open their eyes and hearts to past mistakes... to the way they had communicated before...and learn everything new...

Maverick was better at it, I felt... Jenny had good cause for her to be mentally where she was....
BUT, for me...I felt she put most of the main responsibilities of why things were so hard for her on Maverick.

Jenny's role was hard, too- Becoming a mother at a young age is not easy... and doing it alone can be so hard. So Jenny showed strength in raising their daughter alone. Again, my take was she needed to see Maverick for who he was and was trying to be. He made the first moves in Understanding her...She needed to get on board too.

We do get these two seeing each person for who they are now... and building on it. We get a really happy out of it.

There is more to the story though, as the Bulls are having to adjust to changes in their territory... and things could get ugly. My sense is the next part of this Bulls' Saga is going to get darker...

June 2023 - series re-read
June 2020 - This is a special story me. Maverick stunned me when I first met him and he did it again here. His plight is not an easy one and the women for whom he loves is not easy either but together their story is explosive.

5+++ “Head down, shoulder to the day.” Stars

Being a fan of this new MC series from Susan Fanetti, I'd come to really have a deep affection for Maverick. Something about the little snippets we learned of him in Gunner's story, Twist spoke to me and I knew his story would be epic. Thankfully, I wasn't wrong. In her signature style of magnificent, concise, and engaging writing, Susan Fanetti once again stays true to her characters and their stories by giving readers a real portrait of life with an MC club no holds barred. The good, the bad, the ugly, and the beauty all converge in Slam.

I feel as though I'm constantly saying the same things when attempting to do a Fanetti book justice so with that in my mind I'm once again going to talk about a specific theme that stands out most to me in this book: redemption. Slam provides Maverick and Jenny's stories of reclaiming their lives in ways they each can be fulfilled. Dreams were stolen from these two, snatched away viciously leaving Maverick struggling and needing to find light again while Jenny is so consumed with bitterness in the dark she forgets what was always most important to her. Their path to atonement is paved with really tough and emotional moments. It also shines with sweet moments of small victories and a whole lot of growth. It's a "head down, shoulder to the day" type of second chance love story. Of letting go and moving on the best you can with what you've be given.

This particular story is quite unique in the arsenal of Fanetti love stories. What happens to them providing shocking background and a basis from which they attempt to rise from the ashes of the people they were to become stronger. Maverick and Jenny's story is intricately constructed by juxtaposing their past with their present. I loved going back in time and seeing them before the storm hits. I love the present and the maelstrom of conflicted feelings in both of them. How they handle those emotions feels intimate in such a way you understand the depth, urgency, bitterness, and even glory of their relationship. Maverick and Jenny are both fearful and beat down. They each want something they lost without any specific understanding of how to get it back. They're starting over in equal states of intense longing and vulnerability. Susan Fanetti's understanding and conveyance of these two humanizes them in refreshing ways for this Brazen Bulls series. There's a lot of hurt to overcome. We're starting all over again from scratch. As a final note, a particular shining light in the story is their child, Kelsey, who reminds them each of the power of the love and the importance of the redemption for which they both strive.

"This was pain and despair and loss and fear slicing through every part of her. And love. God, so much love. Oh God"

This one quote resonated with me throughout the whole story. I believe it's a greatly accurate quote for the entire series as a whole. It's a quote about life - REAL life: the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful. You can't have light without dark, rainbows without rain. The Brazen Bulls ongoing story, Maverick and Jenny's personal story are all set to remind you of these basic life facts. Of family and forgiveness through good times and bad. The series reminds us of something bigger than all of us something to remind us we can make it through with a whole lot of someones to hold on to. It's why I love reading them so much. Their romantic in a very realistic portrayal of the twisted lives we all live.

Slam is the third book of the series told in the third person point of view. And while it's a stand alone with new main characters the ongoing arc of the MC continues from previous installments, each of which are excellent and highly recommended as well.

‘For four years, he’d been living behind these fences, walls, and bars. Four years since he’d been outside without a gun aimed on him from a watchtower. In all that time, he’d never made a friend. Enemies, yes. But no friends.’

Maverick is doing time in the state pen where he’s had no contact with the outside world except for a couple brief meetings with his Bulls brother, Gunner. In the previous book, we get to meet Mav when Gunner has a brief meeting with him while he's still in prison. At that moment I knew I was sold on needing his book.

Let’s start off with what we know about Mav.
1) He’s Gunner’s mentor and best friend. Mav gave the ‘wild’ Gunner something to focus on by introducing him to the Bulls.
2) He’s a dad to a little girl named Kelsey. He went into prison right before she was born and only has a picture with her name and birthdate on it. Until Gunner gave him another picture years later.
3) Jenny, Kelsey’s mom, was so mad that Mav ended up prison she cut all ties to him.

Only having that little bit of info about Mav intrigued me. I wanted to know why he was in prison, why Jenny refused to see him or send him pictures of their daughter, etc. My interest was piqued and I wasn’t disappointed discovering those answers among others as I flipped the pages of this book.

The story fluctuates between the current time (1997) to the past. This helped round out the characters and allowed readers to get a better understanding on what motivated these two’s actions. When the reader sees their family life from when they were children there’s an ‘ah-ha’ moment on understanding why these two have such strong beliefs on how a family should look.

“You’re gonna have to make a family for yourself. And when you do, you hold it close and keep it safe like a precious gift. You hear?”

Above is a piece of advice given to Mav when he turned 18 from someone who helped raise him. When I read that line my heart clenched for him. Shortly after the book starts he's out of prison and trying to get his family back. Unfortunately, Jenny felt betrayed when he got locked up in the slammer because he wasn’t there for her and the baby when she needed him the most.

Jenny and Mav’s love story isn’t an easy path and there’s a lot of work for them to be able to reconcile but that path of discovery was one that makes their relationship solid. Their love story is one of struggle and perseverance.

I loved their daughter, Kelsey, she’s adorable. She made me miss my girls being that age. The cuteness of being 4 years is in the things they say because they still have their innocence and yet they’re very perceptive.

SLAM is not wrapped up in a neat little bow, but instead, it’s a story that takes you through the struggles of the mc life and prison life. At the core of the Brazen Bulls series is family. A family isn’t always determined by blood but can be those people you choose to allow in your life. You can read this series without having read any of the other MC series Ms. Fanetti has written, so far. This series is set back, in time, before her other series … in the 90’s.

***4.5 Stars***
It’s not easy getting your life back on track after spending 4 years in prison. Maverick can attest to that. After what he did in prison for his MC and what was did to him he’s forever a changed man. He has to fight for it. For his new life. For his woman Jenny and their daughter Kelsey.
Slam was amazing. All because of the characters and their journey. I enjoyed Maverick and Jenny’s history and how they fought to find each other again. It wasn’t easy and I appreciate that. Trust is earned and it took time for Maverick to win Jenny’s back.
Also Maverick and Gunner’s friendship was a highlight. They go way back as do Jenny and Willa.
Another fabulous installment of the Brazen Bulls. I’m forever a fan of these men and their women.

2.5 Confused.

I dunno what to say about this book. I usually enjoy Fanetti's books, they're fun with pretty cool, strong characters. Not the most innovative plots, but they're fun nonetheless.

This one was not really her style, the characters were not too enjoyable and it was a pretty predictable plot (true, you can't do much with MC books that hasn't been done before, but still, I expected more).

The female MC was pretty annoying at times and I hate annoying people. The male character wasn't bad but he was pretty linear, despite the fact that he kept saying how much he changed, he didn't appear that changed.
The book went on for a bit too long as well.

All in all, I dunno if I'd recommend this book. There are better books by this author out there.

This book was just okay for me. I really didn’t like how the story constantly was going back in time when the couple met, it really interrupted the story for me. The biggest issue I had with the book was the heroine. I wanted to feel bad for her, as she was a single Mom who had to raise her daughter by herself while her baby daddy (aka the hero) was in prison while also taking care of her invalid daughter, but she was really hard to like. She was really immature in all of the flashbacks (and supposed to be 23 but acted about 18 Max) and the reason she was so alone while the hero was in prison was that she very rudely pushed his entire club away when they tried to help, including saying one of the meanest things ever to the President’s wife. She blamed the hero for everything and completely cut him off while he was in prison for what he felt was keeping her safe (though I admit he went too far). She just seemed to mostly care about herself, it was hard to believe she cared about the hero when she never thought about how difficult his life was. The daughter was kind of cute, at least the heroine seemed to be a good Mom.

The last part of the book the main couple started to figure out how to make their relationship work but the heroine had annoyed me too much to really be invested.

The rating I giving this story is for the writing, the storytelling, and the hero.

The heroine can kick rocks.

I could go on a page long screed about all the reasons I didn't like Jenny for the first 80% of the book, but I don't have the energy. I will say that I thought she was selfish, hypocritical and even a bit cruel. She spends a lot of the time, though, telling us how much she still loves Mav. But, imo, she only talked the talk she never actually walked the walk. She never tried to meet him half-way and when she did make the effort it was usually half assed and yanked back at the slightest provocation. I mean, it took to the 80% point of the book for her to even stop and give a thought to what he must have endured while he was in prison for five years. And she didn't even think once about what he was having to endure trying to re acclimate back into society. No, she was too busy cataloging all her own hurts.

Ok, not a page long screed, just a paragraph. LOL. Needless to say, I found her deeply problematic.

Maverick, otoh, was a great hero. A bit of a beta which, imo, was a necessity for how his character arc played out. He wore his heart on his sleeve and put so much effort into trying to win Jenny back it was hard to read sometimes. He deserved better. I loved their daughter Kelsey. What a hoot and a charmer.

Miraculously Jenny turns a corner at about 80% of the book, again much because of Maverick's heavy lifting efforts. He was the one who was constantly trying to find solutions for them while she was busy negging all the time. Ugh. I need to stop. See? She still gets me mad! Anyway, the last 20% she's suddenly all in and happy and everything is all rainbows.

The book does end on a happier, more positive note. And I am happy because Maverick got his HEA. But it wasn't enough to redeem Jenny for me.

I love Susan Fanetti. I get so excited when she's about to release a new book because I just know I'll enjoy it. Slam wasn't just enjoyable, I absolutely loved it. Jenny was such a great heroine and Kelsey stole the show. This one rates as my one of my top Susan Fanetti books.

Re-read in preparation for reading Fight (Brazen Bulls MC, #6) by Susan Fanetti Fight (Brazen Bulls MC, #6) by Susan Fanetti . It's still a 5 star read but the heroine of this book was really frustrating even though she redeems herself by the end of the book.

5+ Stars

"He'd known only how to lead, and she'd known only how to follow. They'd been like two half-selves, unable to make a whole."

That sentence from the book says it all. Maverick and Jenny's story ripped my heart out, made it ache and then put it back together again. Their love story is a real life story where a woman just gives in to a man and then gets angry because she feels she's been pushed. I really didn't like Jenny through most of this book but she redeemed herself in the end. Finally they find what it takes to make their relationship work and Maverick, especially, gets his dream of a real family. This is not an easy read but it's the best book I have read this year. The reason.....because it made me feel so many emotions and I connected with these characters and wanted them to succeed even though I also wanted to shake them both. There is a good ending and IMO no cheating.

Another emotional rollercoaster of a read from the Queen of Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs fiction Susan Fanetti. What I love about her books is despite the subject matter being dark and not glossing over the tough and violent lifestyle of these complex men, her characters make you think. In this case the evil that is domestic violence and childhood abuse and how it impacts on the victim well into adulthood.

Great read

Touching story of redemption and second chances. Again I am impressed y the story telling and character development. We see both sides of the story and feel the pain of both Jen and Maverick. You feel for both of them and their pain is so tangible. I like the back and forth in time. Gave you perspective on why the character was acting like they were.

I love this series and can't wait for the next one.

My, what a heart breaking story Maverick's & Jenny's was. I was rallying for them both from the start. Maverick, loyal to all he loves...and he sure does love Jenny.

 photo PicsArt_08-09-07.14.27_zpsdtdlt4a0.jpg

When Jenny first meets Maverick, it's a whirlwind, and things progress at a rapid rate. Jenny is whisked off her feet. Only thing is, her father. He & Maverick hate each other with a boiling hot fury, it was only a matter of time before things come to a head.

Now, here's the thing, I agree with Jenny about 10%, Mav 90%, he handled things the only way he knew how, and I am glad he did!...but. Things don't always turn out the way you expect them to. And my heart bled for them both.

Maverick is my favourite Bull. He wound me around his little finger, just like he did Jenny. But Jenny has grown up, she's no longer a wallflower. She knows what she wants, and she knows her own mind a lot more.

A beautiful story of pain, love and second chances. I will always love this couple...that's one ; )

#IHateMigraines..I totally sympathise with Jenny, they knock me for 6. I'm just glad I have a Mav of my own to help me.

Mo!.....I love you!.

Well hello!

Look what has landed on my Kindle :)

The Brazen Bulls MC Series is fast becoming a favourite of mine. I began reading Slam with high expectations and I am happy to say my only regret is I have finished it. It wasn’t a quick read by any means. A page turner I picked up of every free moment I could, easily reading it over the weekend. Jenny has a tough story to tell. Maverick has an equally rough time. Together their stories bring together a heartfelt story of survival and trust. Maverick leaves prison determined to pick up life with Jenny and their daughter Kelsey. He is aching to see the child he only knows through a photo he has treasured for the last 4 years. Jenny is in no hurry to introduce her daughter to the man she believes deserted her when she needed him most.

Jenny has done her best, but the demands of her life have taken a big chunk of her ability to trust anyone associated with the Brazen Bulls. That puts Maverick in a precariously fragile position as he realises the welcome he anticipated from Jenny is not happening.

Life has a way of pushing people in directions they never intended, especially when it involves a young child. As with so many children who spend a lot of time surrounded by adults, Kelsey is a 4 going on 30 year old! She bridged many an awkward moment between her parents with her subtle poignant comments and questions.

There’s some beautiful moments shared between characters, wonderful words of wisdom as well as the expected dramas associated with an MC involved with crime. When the scenarios got graphic, thankfully they didn’t last long and the story returned to a relative level of peace. My only struggle was the story is told in past and present intervals. I always want to stay in the moment, but the flashbacks provided sufficient reasoning to justify Jenny’s hesitation and Maverick’s determination.

While there was a lot of challenging issues raised in the story, Maverick’s level headed actions continually focused on making the most of each day. ‘Putting his head down and shoulder to the day’ was his catch cry and it helped him many a time when the odds were stacked against him.

He was far from perfect but he was willing to step up and be the family man he always dreamed of being. Winning Jenny over was never going to be easy with the history they shared but with his brothers and the MC family beside him, he faced every challenge with the determination of a man who loved his family.

Slam, the third book in Susan Fanetti's Brazen Bulls MC is a powerfully emotional story of love, regret, and forgiveness. Slam is gut-wrenching in its intensity. Susan Fanetti's extraordinary writing captures and evokes a vast range of emotion, in both her characters and her audience. Set in the 1990's her accurate portrayal of life before tech continues to enhance each of her books in this series.

Since his introduction in Twist as Gunner's best friend and mentor, I've been a little in love with Maverick. Their relationship touched me. I was intrigued by the forgotten MC brother, moldering away in prison. Asked to perform a crime for the club that might put the kibosh on his upcoming release. It does and that's where Maverick's story begins. In prison, battered in body and soul. Susan Fanetti's Maverick astounded me. She bores into the very essence of who he is. I felt him. His hurt, isolation, resignation, abandonment, hopelessness, and rage is a consuming force. His anguish over the loss of Jenny and the daughter he's never met left me aching. His journey to earn back the family he's lost, finding his way back to the club is heart-wrenching. After reading Slam, I'm head over heels in love with him.

Like the two preceding books, Slam is rich with club life and the relationships between the Brothers and Old Ladies. I absolutely love Mo! Fanetti gives us the chance to bask in the family that is the club. The Bull's interactions with a young Issac and the rest of the Night Horde continue to fascinate me. Reading about the Horde in real time, but twenty years in the past holds me in thrall! The storyline of the series moves forward, giving us some tense moments and satisfying results. This book contains violence and sexual situations. It's gritty realism a balm to my to soul. I can't wait to read the next one.

I loved this book. I love this series!

It was ok. Maverick is awesome. Jen is fine but I never really forgave her. And she didn't seem awesome. Hated the counting of saying I Love You. Also the flash back storytelling prevented really being into the story.

Parts that were present tense (not flashbacks) with just Mav (and not Jen) are the best

COMMENTS/NOTES: loved the portrayal of being a caretaker. Having cared for my g-mother 94 w/ dementia, it's hectic. I can't imagine hating and resenting her for her being a horrible person that I am shackled with. Jenny is a single mom, caretaker, works at a job she hates. She was promised and believed a different kind of life. Maybe she was naive in the beginning, but she was definitely gut checked once Maverick went to prison and she had Kelsey.

I liked the back and forth between past and present. H& h highlight important moments that explain how they think and feel now. Finding out Jenny is pregnant, what caused Maverick to go to jail, and Maverick meeting Gunner.

The big bad is the Russians-Irina Volkov. Brazen Bulls are running guns, all the way outlaw. It's bad for Maverick because he's just out, under supervision for a yr, can't leave the state. But he is trying to find his way back into the MC. He's more than proven his loyalty-going to prison, not ratting about the Russians, doing their bidding while locked up. He just has to decide on the balance of violence, is it justified, and the fact that he feels he's nothing without the club. He has Jenny and Kelsey back, but without the club he can't protect them and make a life threat they deserve.

Maverick has a score to settle with the Dyson crew who hurt him while he was in prison. The Street Hounds are a mc club that they are delivering guns to, but Maverick and others know they are evil-more so than them. They end Dyson and the Street Hounds declare war on Brazen Bulls. Prospects are patched in, new ones are sponsored. Maverick has some life changing things happen-he and Jenny marry, they are pregnant(with a boy), and he's dealing with keeping his family safe and being a club outlaw. Yes they are a family, with Mo's Thanksgiving gems, but at some point every member has to decide is it worth it? They are going lose people, and just like SB and SoCal things are going come to a head.

Well this was certainly a few steps up from book two, which I didn't care for all that much. Maverick and Jenny had one hell of a history and relationship. While it was fun reading about their ups, downs and outs, I gave it only fours stars because to some extent I feel like there were too many selfish things and people in this book. Ultimately everything falls into place, as it should but the journey to get there...well Jenny, Maverick and the club had a lot to learn.

I totally understood Jenny's hate, anger and resentment towards Maverick and the club. Many may say that Maverick did what he did to protect and defend her, she shouldn't have reacted the way she did, with such hostility and I agree to some extent. I agree that in his own alpha biker way he was defending her against an abusive parent. Did he take things to far? Totally, but that's neither here nor there. I think she would have eventually been okay and made peace with Maverick, had he not have to serve those years in prison, essentially leaving her alone to have a baby.

Was the club there for her in his absence? Yes, but they also needed to respect her wishes and boundaries. Not try to push up on her and force her to accept their help or threaten her if she didn't take it. After everything she went through, she needed understanding and compassion..not force, not threats...just time to deal. They didn't give that to her so she lashed out, unfortunately she said something fucking horrible to Mo and there was just no coming back from that..at least not for a while.

So while I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I didn't enjoy Jenny keeping Maverick from his daughter, she knew he would a good father so that was just wrong. I didn't enjoy how Maverick along with the club tried to force her to do shit she wasn't ready for. I especially didn't like how little THREE year old Kelsey was made to speak like a fifteen year old teenager. That always baffles me how writers portray two and three years old like grown people with the way they talk. Its to farfetched.

Overall it was a great book and I'm just dreading reading the next one because I feel this book is the quiet before the storm!
