Rate this book
The story picks up a few months after the end of the first book. Kayla and her friends have started their service on the police force in New Orleans. Kayla struggled to fit in as a Dyamphyr among so many humans with natural fear and suspicion about her kind. She is not given much time to adjust to the social aspects before a case comes in that threatens to tear down the fragile peace of the supernatural community. Will Kayla be able to get to the bottom of a case that might very well pit her against her own grandmother? What will Kayla be willing to sacrifice in order to protect the ones she loves?

In this second book of Kayla McQueen series, Kayla has finally became a cop. Her fellow cops are not so friendly and her ability to track murderers only increase the jealousy.

The killer is back. Innocent witches are being killed and their souls are drained using an ancient magic which was forbidden. The problem is the killer is among of them.

It is one thing to collect the souls and another to awake something that was meant to stay buried. When the lives of the dear ones are threatened, Kayla is forced to make a bargain. A bargain which will cost her more than her what she bargained for.

Will Kayla be able to find the killer before they finally finish what they had started? What will happen between Jon and Kayla? Will she fight against the attraction she feels towards him or act on it?

Read this book to find out if the young detective hell bent on his mission to win Kayla's heart was able to succeed.

💎 Brett is once again back with his awesome characters. He had taken the usage of magic and sorcery to another level.

💎The fight scenes will blow your minds. His writing is very descriptive and the plot moves in a fast pace, keeping the reader wondering about the killer. There are few hints here and there, but most of them won't guess it until later.

💎 I liked the concept of Abyss and the humor when Kayla compares them with shadow magic was enjoyable.

💎 As usual, there was no lack of sarcasm in this one as well. In fact, Kayla has just evolved to a whole new level. The conversations between Joan and Jenny McQueen will make you laugh. I died laughing when they discuss men with Kayla. AWKWARD...

The underlying mother and daughter love between them is almost not visible until later stage.

💎 Bella of London from the first book makes an appearance in this one too and I should say she plays an important role. She is another character I loved in this book, she is so experienced and strong.

💎 Sally, how can you miss her? The silly horny she-wolf will again have you ROFL with her horny statements. Her character shows maturity in this one and has a lot of action in this book.

💎 Jon, hmm...the handsome Cajun hunk. Kayla is in for a lot of swooning and drooling. Her dyamphyr hormones are just going to get her busted.

Well done!
