I believe I read most of Connie Mason's books sometime between 2003 and 2004. "Flame" is book #1 of a set. Book #2 is "Shadow Walker" and was wonderful, too. I have 5 stars written inside the book flap and remember it as one of my favorites.
This is a well written love story set in the United States (western), just after the Civil War.
This was an entertaining romance that started with a good premise. In Missouri, Ashley Webster needed to find a husband immediately and she would pay for the privilege. She needed and escort to join a wagon train headed west to help her twin brother who sat in an army jail accused of a murder that he did not commit. This is post Civil War and she finds a Rebel soldier, Tanner MacTavish, who has a personal hatred for all Yankees. But he is a restless drifter and needs the money, so he accepts. They decide it will be a marriage in name only and they will annul it as soon as they arrive at the fort. They get on each other's nerves from the get-go. They call each other "Yank" and "Reb" in a disparaging way and really want nothing to do with each other. But they have pretty hot chemistry together and fireworks spark. It is not until Ashley,( or "Flame" as the Native American chief dubs her) is kidnapped to be the chief's bride that he realizes his burgeoning feelings for her. So even though he is told it is a fool's errand, he goes off to rescue her. They grow close in captivity and manage to leave after a time. They settle in Oregon City and are still planning on divorcing because by now, they have been intimate. Ashley does not want to part from Tanner as she has fallen in love, but Tanner is hell bent on revenge. He is determined to kill the Yankee that burned his plantation and raped his former wife. They had other major problems - with jealousy, shootings and a randy guy who could not take no for an answer. But all of that could be managed, if only Tanner could put his revenge aside. These two just need to talk to each other. But this was a fun book.
I was needing a break and Connie Mason is one of my go-to authors for that. She doesn't make you think too hard or drag down the pace with inner monologues. She's totally upfront and tells you exactly what you'll be getting from her.
Chicago school marm Ashley Webster needs a fake husband in order to travel to Oregon. (Just go with it.) Former Confederate Tanner MacTavish is so mentally unhinged that the mere color of blue will set him off on a rampage. Which is ironic since blue is the color of his balls from all the times Ashley gets him hot and heavy and then says, "No." After a side adventure with Indians in order to set up the next book in the series, Ashley and Tanner reach Oregon where she strains to keep Tanner from taking bloody revenge on a man from his past.
Ashley Webster, a red-headed Chicago schoolmarm, is trying to get to Fort Bridger to clear her twin brother Cole of murder charges in 1866. The wagon master in St. Joe, MO has refused to take her because she's single. She goes to the local sheriff for help in finding a temporary husband. He's just locked up his former Rebel Captain. Tanner MacTavish survived the war only to go home to his dying mother and troubled wife. Both had been raped by a Union company burning homes around Atlanta. All Tanner wants after his mom dies and his wife commits suicide is revenge on Yankees. Hating each other, they marry. Two days out of Ft. Bridger, Ashley is taken by Indians because of her hair. Tanner tries to get a patrol to look, is locked up, meets Cole and they go after her. He rescues her, they make it to Oregon and eventually all works out. Several descriptive love scenes. Fast read - good.

The book had a nice fast pace storyline. Spots didn't rag on page after page like A LOT of books do on someone thinking about one thing. I picked the book because the heroine was supposed to be plain. Rare to find a good book with a plain heroine that the hero become drawn to. This turned out just the opposite. Personally , for me, I don't want to read about a heroine who has every man she runs into just having to have her. It became a bit much.
This is the story of Shadow Walker's sister and her husband. It was a great story and was very entertaining. When Ashley wanted something or someone she never gave up.
Connie Mason continues to be one of my favorite authors. This book was intriguing and there was just enough back and forth between the two lovers without. Not too much and not too little.
I like the premise of enemies forced to work together, they usually make my favourite romances. I like when the animosity turns to reluctant respect and affection. However there wasn't that much respect where Tanner was concerned and Ashley was not developed enough for me to have any real connection with her. I liked the start of the story and the set-up, and I liked the realistic elements the author included about the wagon journey. I didn't feel too strongly about any character negatively or positively though and so it was hard to stay engaged. I thought Tanner and Ashley had good chemistry at the beginning of the story, but it didn't play out in a way I liked. I didn't like the fact that Tanner grabbed Ashley and kissed her when she clearly didn't want him to, then she started to perhaps think it was her fault and maybe she liked it. He improved a little, but later he again blames her for leading men astray again and again and never apologises for any of it. That isn't a character trait I like at all. Ignoring the obvious reasons why I don't like the trait (like consent is pretty black and white and I like that to be clear in a romance), it also gets really boring because it makes him look stupid when he thinks things are her choice/fault when they CLEARLY AREN'T. Stopped half way through, DNF, however there are some parts of this story that were good and I think people would really enjoy. Just not for me.
This has been a go to favorite historical western romance read of mine for years. I have read this more times than I can count and I happened to do so this weekend. It's been a few years since my last reading and it was just as emotionally enthralling as the first time. Ashley Webster, a yankee school teacher from New York is looking for someone to pose as her husband to pacify a wagon train master, who will not let single females travel with his group without parents or a husband. Tanner MacTavish, a former soldier in the Confederate army, wouldn't seem to be the best candidate for the job, but due to certain circumstances these two end up married to each other. Read their story and be caught up in attempted murder, threatening natives, and a love story for the ages.
Good read. When her brother was accused of murder she sets out to clear his name. To head out by wagon train to where her brother is she needs to be married. She was a Yankee. She confronts the Sheriff and asks him for help. The Sheriff offers her the prisoner that he has in his jail. Unfortunately he was a Reb with a severe dislike for Yankees. They end up married and do nothing else but argue and disagree. Between the town they leave and her destination they have several adventures and fall in love even though neither are willing to admit it. HEA ending.
I did not enjoy this book. All the plot points turn on almost-rapes, rape, protecting rapists, and force. Each time I thought the author was working on creating a romance between tanner and Ashley, more rape/force/leering implications are brought into the picture. I will not be reading any more of Mason's writing.
The cover of this book I think is very unappealing, but an interesting read by CM. A true insight to what life was like in the wild west of America after the civil war.
The love story was captivatng and the battles with indians and law breakers throughout added intense drama!
WOW! I BELIEVE THIS IS ACTUALLY ONE OF THE BETTER STORIES BY MASON THAT DIDNT ENTAIL AN ANNOYING HERO AND HEROINE. I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW HAPPY I AM TO SEE A DIFFERENT KIND OF PLOT FROM HER.
OUR HERO is a man whose bent on revenge against the Yankee who wiped out his entire family, including his sweet wife. Somehow the story opens with him being jailed and ending up married to our heroine by her circumstance and he's escorting her to where her brother is. As he is a man of honour and he needs the money she gives, he agrees to marry her despite his hatred for Yanks. But the heart is a funny thing, and his body while desires her, his heart slowly learns to fall in love again although he is in denial. Their relationship progressed quite nicely with a hint of angst and a mix of passion that cannot be denied. Of course both were stubborn to admit their feelings and as long as he has the burning hatred to kill the man responsible for his family's demise, he and Ashley cannot be together if he is bent on this road to destruction. Compared to Mason's other heroes, Tanner is actually pretty normal. THANK GOD! He's not quick to dramatised burst of temper, even if he is quick to be jealous but at most times, he is at least reasonable.
OUR HEROINE is desperate to get to her brother who is said to have been sent behind bars for a crime and she's going to bail him out, yet the wagon master denies her passage unless she's married. So, she marches up to the Sheriff and demands he wed her to someone. Conveniently, Tanner happen to there and she pays him to be her husband and begins their unlikely courtship. They will go through thick and thin, and even facing her kidnapping by Red Indians and also from plenty of unwanted advances from antagonistic men. I like the heroine, although she's not my first pick of heroines, shes okay, because she's not stupid, vain or petty tempered.
OVERALL this was a genuinely enjoyable story and I am glad that at least one of Mason's books is worthy of high praise for once.
