I think I've written and changed my bio on here a hundred times in the last decade. See, that's why I don't have tattoos!

I've been a GR for over ten years and I still use it daily to keep up with my reading and to learn about books, old and new ones, but more importantly, because as I grow older and hopefully wiser, I realize that readers are my favorite type of people. They seem to be a little more empathetic and open-minded, and generally more cultivated.

If you look at my shelves, you'll see that I used to read about 70 books a year but in the last years, I've grown more selective and take my time with my lovers, ahem, books.

Yes, I am also a LGBTQ writer and Francophone Montrealer.

I cherish my readers, and want to take this space here to thank you all personally for reading and reviewing my books. You make reality tolerable like a good class of wine.

May your life be blessed.

3.5 stars, ie between "I liked it" and "I really liked it."

Tristan is not only stunning, he is also a carer but afraid not to be perfect and to be left “on the side”. Rain is a dreamer and has a very strong bond with his 11-year old son with asperger’s syndrome. He’s just separated from his controlling husband. This story is the journey of Tristan and Rain and how they make huge changes in their life together to build a family.

More than 3 stars because I really felt for Tristan, with his huge heart and his respect for the others and Rain, with his strength towards his son, but also towards himself despite his insecurities. And they are surrounded by great second characters : Pip, Rain’s son but also Bernie and Rachel (Tristan’s friends), Andre (Rain’s boss) and Milo (Rain’s future ex-husband). And all of them are not perfect nor evil, just human beings trying to go through life with their qualities and their issues.

Less than 4 stars because, to be honest, I sometimes had a hard time to understand the characters. Whether it’s me or because the characters are not enough fleshed out, I’m still wondering. And…but these are my personal tastes…I would have like more steam.

Overall, an enjoyable journey with 2 lovable characters, nice on the feels.

What an amazing book!!

All the characters were great and unique. Rain (loved that name!) transformed during the few months the book covers. We find him at a transitional point, right when he found the courage to make some big changes in his life. He is a loving and devoted father that does everything he can to provide for his child, Pip.

Pip, or Phillip, has Asperger's Syndrom and Rain is trying to get him the help and support he needs. Mainly he seemed more mature than his age but you could see some autism traits in his character and in his behavior. I don't know much about autism but I think the author did a great job with Pip's character.

So, Rain and Pip had just moved in next door to Tristan, a salesman for a big company. We find him having some trouble at his job because of the partying he did a few months ago. The reason he lost control of his life is explained and realistic. I won't go into detail but I'll say that it was NOT just a big bubble that served the plot.

Now let me say a few things about Milo. He was Rain's husband of fourteen years and at the beginning of the book they had just separated and Rain and Pip had just moved out. I don't know if I was supposed to hate him but I didn't. He actually stole my heart! He is a good father to Pip and loves Rain very much even though he makes many MANY mistakes. I think Milo and Rain are just not good together. They bring out the worst in each other and their relationship was unhealthy and destructive. Milo had been through some stuff when he was a teenager that have marked him and he just doesn't know how to love and show it without hurting others. He has anger issues and is violent with Rain (though he never hits him and is never violent with Pip) and is trying to overcome those bad traits of himself and become a better person. After a while he even accepted Tristan and his role in Rain and Pip's lives even though it was hard for him to believe that their marriage was really over.
I didn't want to see him back together with Rain because as I said they weren't right for each other but I really wanted to see him move on, finding love and getting his own happily ever after. I think he is a good person at heart who experienced some bad things and needs help and the right people by his side to overcome his past and learn to love and listen those around him. We see him really struggling to change himself and control his anger. He is not always succesfull and we see him behaving erratically because of that.

I don't excuse his anger or his behavior, I'm just saying I don't see him as an evil person who can't redeem himself and his actions. I didn't want him to suffer for loosing Rain. I wanted to see him move on and becoming a better version of himself. I really wanted to see him happy..

Ok that's it about Milo. I want to say a few things about Rain's marionettes! What a great talent he has! His head was full of characters and the most weird and amazing stories about each of them. He took some fabric, some foam and some markers and he created a whole person with a unique character and a past that shaped him. There was a lesson to be learned from his stories and his imagination was bottomless.
Throughout the book I kept hopping we would get to 'see' the show and I got my wish! I was so happy about that! His show was really amazing. Designed in a way so that kids don't get bored and also giving the audience stuff to think about.

The secondary characters were all well liked. Rain and Tristan had a real circle of friends and family and we got to see them interact with them and not just hear their names and know that they exist somewhere. The story felt more real because of that. There where enough faces in it to see the MCs in everyday life and in real situations interacting with people who played a big or a small part in their lives and had different impacts in them, but not so many as to feel overwelmed by the crowd and to forget who is who.

The only thing that I didn't like was that at times I felt as though Rain was twenty-five instead of thirty-five. Maybe that was because everyone in his family was overprotective and acting as though they had to make decisions about Rain without his input. Of course Rain was responsible for that as he never put boundries for the people in his life. The reason for this is also explained but I don't know.. He seemed younger than his age and not in a good way. Anyway, it wasn't such a big deal just something that irked me while reading certain parts.

All in all I really loved this book. It made me tear up a few times (especially Milo's email to Pip) which , call me weird if you want, is a plus for me and it never had me rolling my eyes. I gave it four stars because of the way we left Milo (yes Milo again! I said I loved this character!). I recommend it without a second thought.

I like this author's work. She writes really thoughtfully, with the sort of subtlety and real emotion that makes her characters feel true.

I read this one through Hoopla.
