Flower Shields

Rate this book
Meet the four horsemen: Michael, Gabrielle, Uriel and Raphael. For centuries their job has been to guard the gates of hell, making sure they never open. Without the keys, there was never any real threat. That's about to change. There are rumours on the horizon that demon followers unearthed scrolls that explain exactly how to find the lost keys. This new battle is a race to see which side locates them first.

Michael couldn't care less about the love story behind how and why the world was created. In fact, nothing matters to him other than keeping the gates to hell closed. If one of the lost keys ever fell into the wrong hands, all humanity would be doomed. He's not going to let that happen - at any cost.

*************************

Tara's life is nothing short of a disaster. She's managed to flunk out of college with about the same amount of dignity as every relationship she's been in. The only constant in her life has been her love for flowers. When she's attacked at work, a stranger comes to her aid. Michael might be good-looking, but he's also arrogant, bossy and crazy. He's also her only chance to figure out who attacked her and why. Should she follow her heart and trust him - or listen to her head and run?

About the author!

I was diagnosed with clinical depression after the loss of my mother, father and husband within three years of each other; all to cancer. 24/7 in-home care, coupled with the loss I felt, left its mark on my psyche.

Depression takes up a lot of my life. Reading and writing are the only things I have found that help (in connection with regular medication), even if only for a short time. To escape to a different world can make a big difference in my mood in real time.

To put things in perspective, when I was at my lowest point, I couldn't open mail, talk on the phone, or even drive to the store. Walls of sadness surrounded me. As they closed in, tears would fall. There didn't need to be a reason or trigger.

People ask me why I started writing. My answer is simple: I wanted to create a world into which other people with similar problems could escape. I wanted to share the one place that had helped me for many years.

I have always said that as long as one person finds a little bit of happiness out of my books, I am, in my opinion, an accomplished author. The same is true for every writer out there. Please don't ever let anyone tell you different.

I read books as well as write them and have visited the worlds many different authors have created. Those worlds not only make me feel better, but give me the strength to face real life again. I want to thank everyone who writes - I want them to know they are making a difference.

Thank you for reading and writing.

Considering how most of C.A. King's novels involve a twist on well-known tales, fables, and legends, I suppose it was only a matter of time before she tackled the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Flower Shields, the first book in what will likely be a four-book series, introduces its own twist on the lore, and while it's less Biblical, it is intriguing in its own right.

One of the reasons I enjoy reading King's work is finding that twist. Seeing how she takes something so well known and makes it feel fresh again makes reading the vast majority of her work a treat, and Flower Shields is no exception.

Tara is the hero of the tale, but she doesn't embark on her journey alone. Her dynamic with Michael shifts constantly between annoyance and acceptance, begrudging trust and enduring loyalty. While the story could've easily devolved into damsel-in-distress territory, King does a good job of ensuring both Tara and Michael have their own goals and agency.

And like the rest of King's work, Flower Shields wastes no time; it doesn't dilly-dally and it doesn't stall. King's stories hit the ground running, making them infinitely readable. It's easy to push through King's library -- which has several series in-progress -- because she doesn't bog you down with 400- and 500-page tomes.

Some stories need that many pages to be told. King's don't and she understands that.

If you're a fan of King's other work, Flower Shields will be a great addition to your library. If you're not yet, there's no better place to join the party.

Flower Shields was a great read and the first in a new series from C.A King that won't disappoint readers. It features demi-gods, demons, action, and even a bit of romance. It's a quick read but there's lots to keep readers intrigued. The characters are well developed and I really enjoyed the unique take on the four horsemen. the descriptions were excellent too. The story revolves around the main characters of Michael and Tara and the suspense was excellent. I'm looking forward to reading more of the series and the other characters that will feature. it had a great plot, the writing was great, and I have no hesitation in giving this book five stars.

The four horsemen, guardians of the gates....

I guess this is Michael’s story.

But who is Tara? Why is she important to demonkind? Michael needs to find out. But others have other ideas. A sweet little old lady who may not be what she seems.

This is a novel that takes the heroine who doesn’t know she is to another level and provides sufficient twists and turns to stretch even the most jaded imagination.

Flower Shields was a great, fast read about demigods and demons, steeped in a history of legend. I was drawn in the from the start and really liked the originality of this story. It's no secret I love paranormal romance and fantasy and this book delivers.

Michael and Tara's relationship was sweet, and more of a side story to the main plot. I'm alright with that as the rest of the story intrigued me. I kept wondering where it was going and I liked that it was unpredictable. I've always enjoyed dystopian stories and "end of days" plotlines, combine that with the fantasy and paranormal aspect, and you have one great read. I really can't wait to find about the other 3 "horseman" and the continuing story of their conflict in a world where demons and demigods clash. If I had any criticism it would be that I wish the book was longer. 5 Stars!

Another winner from the talented C.A.King! “Flower Shields” is the first book in a series, and I already can’t wait for the following books to be released. The story itself is a new take on a Biblical tale of the world creation and a rather interesting one. After God has left the world mourning the loss of his beloved, the four horsemen were left behind to guard the four gates of hell, to which God’s nemesis is confined. Many centuries pass, and the old threat stirs to life, and Michael - one of the horsemen - is running out of time to find the person who his enemies are after, and who might be able to help them go through with their sinister plans…
I loved how the story was told from both points of view, one that of Tara and another one of Michael. I soon found myself completely immersed into the fascinating world of old cults, modern day prophecies and ancient conspiracies, where a trusted friend can turn into a foe to pursue their own goals. A great story, and very well told. Five stars.

This was a short, fast paced read, but highly enjoyable. It takes the creation myth and the biblical four horsemen of the apocalypse and totally rewrites the story in a "but what if it really happened this way" sort of manner. Instead of angels, you've got demigods, but you also have demons playing in the background.

The entire story is refreshing and totally original. I've seen plenty of takes on the Four Horsemen. Hell, I just wrote one myself. This one is a totally new spin. The only thing that remains from what you might know of the bible are a few names and the four horsemen from the book of Revelations.

I'm dying to read book 2. I have to know what Dante is up to

This was an enjoyable supernatural story. The plot moves fast and I've read it in one day. I liked the main characters which is always a prerequisite for me to enjoy any read. Tara and Michael have very different backgrounds but there is romance in the air! The back story was interesting and original with a special role for flowers. It was a lighthearted and fun read which is the first in a series. I shall read more by this author.

Really enjoyed this one.

Flower Shields gripped me from the beginning. I loved the female lead. She was so perfect for the role and her character grew with the book. The action packed pace makes this book a real page turner. I read it all in one go and felt quite exhausted at the end.

The writing is excellent with great descriptions and characterization. Rich with fantasy scene setting, you won't be disappointed with this wonderful book and I am already chomping at the bit to read the next in the series!

Flower Shields, Book 1, is a fast paced supernatural story with a touch of romance about keeping the gates to Hell locked. The writing is smooth and with a few available hours, readers will most likely whisk through this imaginative piece.

An interesting take on the four horsemen.

I enjoyed the story but wished for more. There was a lot more I wanted to know about this new world. I would love to see more of Tara and Michael's story it was too quick for my taste but I did find them intriguing. The author did a good job of getting you to want to know more of what's really going on and where it is all leading. I'm hoping the next story will be more forthcoming and we get to see more of Michael and Tara.

I read the 2nd book in this series ( Drawing Strength from Words ) last week and enjoyed it so much I had to read the 1st book in the series.
I didn't relate as well to Michael and Tara, but this is still a brilliant story. I love the premise behind the series. The four horsemen have been guarding the gates to hell for centuries. A previous friend Dante has turned rogue (or has he?) and discovered scrolls that explain the keys to the doors and how they can be used. This book is Michael's story.
Both books are set in the present time and are fast-paced and incredibly readable. The story flows so naturally, you lose track of time. The books are fun, entertaining and imaginative. The only downside is I now have to wait for book 3 to be written.
Highly recommend to paranormal fans or anyone looking for an easy to follow, fun, adventure story.

I have come to realize that C.A. King enjoys taking old fables, or legends, and turning them into a novel that is relevant for the time we are in now. I love the captivating story lines and plot twists that are unpredictable, regardless, of the past preconceptions that you have about what you assumed was the story in the past.

Flower Shields is the first novel in the Four Horsemen series from C.A. King. In this book we mostly get the story started, setting up what the battle is to come, and the dangers that are on the horizon. We also get an up close and personal account of Michael. He is one of the four horsemen and this book centers on his point of view. Michael’s only concerns are guarding the gates of hell and making sure no one can open them and unleash the dark world. It was never a difficult task to protect the gates until it is discovered by demons that have found scrolls that contain the secrets to finding the lost keys. Now the main battle that Michael has, is to make sure he finds the keys before the dark world does. He has to protect the world from the dangers of hell, regardless of the costs that will take a toll on him. Which side will find the keys first, good or bad?

Tara is struggling with life right now. She has failed out of college and finds herself in the middle of an attack on her while she is at work. It is Michael that comes to her rescue. There are a lot of things that Michael makes her feel, but it is a slow burn to that point of a love interest for her. His off-putting personality combined with his bossy attitude is unsettling to Tara. She is a strong willed woman and trusts her head above all else. This is what will aid her in protecting her life. As much as she needs to be saved at points, it was refreshing to see that she was able to protect herself for the most part and doesn’t need to play the damsel in distress role we often equate with alpha male and quirky woman love interests.

There was a lot packed into this short book. For me, I would have totally been ok with this book being longer. My only complaint was that this deterred from the world building for me. I would have liked to have more descriptive areas that brought to life what was going on with the gates of hell and what it looked like. A longer more detailed book would have been a bonus, but didn’t take away from my good experience reading this novel.

I look forward to seeing what is to come from the other horsemen’s point of views and how they will play a role in the battle to protect the world from the dark demons that threaten to destroy it. I do hope that the next has a bit more of detailed descriptions of the world this book takes place in and continues on the path of a dystopian era novel. I have a feeling I will enjoy the next as much as this one if not more so, as if often seen in multiple book series.

Flower Shields (A Four Horsemen Novel Book 1) by C.A. King was a unique fast pace read, that had me hooked form start to finish.

For being a short read this book has everything you would get in a full lent novel. That being said I do feel somethings were rushed, especially at the end. The climax was excellently executed, but, I do feel the fight choreography was a little, unpolished in some places. But again I feel that's because of the length of the book.

As for our MC's, I liked Tara. Though she had to be save on a few occasions, it wasn't a damsel situation. She kept her head on straight and did her best to think things through. She's quirky and savage. Though we meet her when she's on the outs, her unique personality shins through. The girl trust her instances , and believe me, it saved her life. A special trait that some UF characters seems to lack. .. that alleyway looks like a trap.. my gut is yelling danger/death awaits.. lets go check it out! Tara thank you for listing.

I will say that twist, I didn't see that coming. There was some small foreshadowing to indicate it, but at the same time, it was over shadowed with kindness. I will say that, with said twist, I didn't like the way it was resolved. Kind of a throw away, and I think it should have been handled with a little more finesse.

Our love interest, he was your typical alpha male. I don't think I need to say more. I did however like his character but; I just felt like he was like every other alpha male in urban fantasy, or any other genre. The only different, it took a bit for that insta-lust/love to kick in.. I'm going to blame that on the dress. (You'll get it once you read this marvel).

Our main antagonist, he was a surprise. I like him, he had more character development in the short fews pages he was in, then any other character. Now it wasn't epic, but it was more so from him telling his story to the point he was currently at. There's more to him, and I think he is going to be the key in the final battle.

With that being said, I very much enjoyed this book. I can't wait to get my hands on the next instalment. I'm guessing that it's going to follow each horseman on their own journey until the final battle. Judging by the two lovers in this book, I have a good guest on who the other couples are going to be in the books to follow, and I have a feeling it's all going to be connected, or have some major meaning in that finally battle. That I'm going to say now, it's going to be epic. I just got this feeling that this book is just the tip of the iceberg.

If you haven't guessed, I highly recommend this book, and all books to come.

Happy Reading.

Flower SHIELDS (A Four Horseman Novel)
By C. A. King
Rated 4 stars

I picked this up because a friend recommended it. I was not disappointed! The writing is easy to follow and read. The characters are interesting. The story was great. I enjoyed how much of the background info was put into the prologue. That was immensely helpful so I was on board when I started chapter one.

I love Michael! He is broody, a womanizer and handsome to boot. He is also a horseman. He looks for demons and banishes them. He hasn’t seen a demon in a while but times are changing. He realizes when he meets Tara something is off.

Tara is important to the universe and has no clue. All she knows is there are weird people with dark eye showing up at her job among other places. I was surprised she didn’t freak when she found out. I did like her insight to the whole flowers thing.

I wasn’t super invested in the love story aspect because they hardly spent time together. So how could they be in insta-love. There was no kissing/talking basically he was rude to her and she smashed flowers over his head. Don’t get me wrong...that part was great! I still *snicker* thinking about it. But I guess they are destined.

This is my first book by this author. Although this is a relatively short book it is packed full of a great story. I will be looking forward to reading the next horsemans story.

Flower Shields is the first book in the Four Horsemen series by C.A King. I have read all of Ms. Kings books now, and this one is among my favourites of hers. I loved the premise of the story and enjoyed reading Ms. King’s take and twist on the four horsemen myth. This is a very creative and individual urban fantasy that has gods, demons, good vs evil, mystery, suspense, action, drama, and supernatural elements.
The characters are superb- fully developed, interesting and likeable- who grew and developed as the story progressed, Tara most of all.
This is a very imaginative, unique and well written story. The author has a very dynamic style, with detailed descriptions and rich, vibrant scene setting. Through her words we are transported into the story and experience it along with the characters. Ms. King has produced an entirely captivating read. I wasn’t sure whether I’d enjoy it as much as some of her other books, but I am happy to say that Ms. King definitely didn’t disappoint, and I loved how she crafted the story and brought all the various elements together, weaving them into a story that held my attention from beginning to end.
I really liked this story am very intrigued by the promise it holds for the rest of the series. I am really looking forward to reading the rest of this series. Bring on Book two!

Thank you, Ms. King!

A paranormal romance that's right up my alley! There's Michael a rather impatient, grumpy demigod who is one of the four gatekeepers to hell. Then there is Tara a human who considers herself a loser in the arena of life. A job for Tara lands her in danger and Michael becomes her savior more than once. He's on a mission to find some demons who may just have the keys to hell. Somehow Tara is mixed up in this mess and he doesn't know how. As the story unfolds they both find out why demons are after her. Can he save her? He's certainly motivated when he realizes he's falling in love with Tara.
This is a short but high impact story that moves at the perfect pace. The writing is clean and concise and the characters have true personality. If you're looking for an afternoon read and love paranormal romance, give this story a try.

Tara is all but a lost soul. She’s been working in her parents’ funeral home, but dead bodies aren’t exactly her cup of tea. She’s looking for a new job when the owner of the flower shop her parents use offers her one. Michael, on the other hand, is a demigod – one of the guardians of the gates of hell. He doesn’t get tangled up with earthly women, other than for brief flings, because, well, they’re just human. Until he encounters Tara and realizes that those trying to open one of the gates want her. Not dead, not just yet, but once she’s outlived her usefulness, who cares? Michael, for one.

Flower Shields is relatively short, but it’s a roller-coaster ride that engages the reader and doesn’t let up. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Flower Shields (A Four Horsemen Novel Book 1) by C.A. King

5-Stars

Flower Shields (A Four Horsemen Novel Book 1) by C.A. King is an excellent fantasy romance novel. Easily worth its 5-stars. Tara and Michael are the main characters. Tara is somehow mixed up in a scenario involving a key. Michael is looking for it as well but to keep it from landing in the hands of demons. Tara is attacked by demons and is whisked away by Michael. That is when things really go crazy.

This story was easy to follow and fun to read. I loved the development and plot twist. The characters were very creative and the backstory was exciting. It was a different fictional beginning for all life. I really enjoyed this novel and hope other readers will too.

While I only gave this book three stars, it isn't to say that this isn't good. I enjoyed the bones of this story as well as the weaving of mythology and paranormal instances. My only wish is that this first novel of the series was longer and would have more detailing in the relationships of the characters, perhaps even a flashback of the battle where Michael realized Dante had "fallen", as it were. I would indeed read the next in the series and see where the story takes me, as I am a fan of meshing mythologies and new takes on them. Plus I do enjoy the concept of flowers having a power over demons, like a play on life having more power over the dead. I did also like the idea of the known archangels of the Bible being known as the four horsemen in this tale. I just wanted to see more things fleshed out, but again, I think the second book will have it.

Just when I was really getting into this book... it ended. I really need the next one. I feel like this whole book was a buildup to an epic battle and then it ended. Tara is thrown into the world of Gods and Demons and only Michael seems to be helping her. Though it didn't seem like it at first. The book is named Flower Shields but she didn't do a flower shield until the end of the book. I'm between excited and disappointed at this book. I think the story is great just unfinished. I do really need the second one.

This book is a really enjoyable read. The author takes existing mythological characters and shapes them into her own creations. She gives them personalities and history and brings them to life in an interestingly different story. It has a few nice twists and ends with just enough unanswered questions to make the reader eager to read the next instalment without being annoying.

I will definitely be reading book 2.

Today is the day that Tara is finally going to get her life in order. She is going to find herself a job, and she is not going to fall for any more bad boys. This is going to be the beginning of a new Tara. A better Tara. Or so she hoped...

But then strange things began to happen, and she suddenly finds herself facing down demons and trying her very best not to fall for one of The Four Horsemen, whose job it is to guard the gates of Hell.

Flower Shields (A Four Horsemen Novel Book 1) by C.A. King takes a fresh new look at the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse although this time, The Horsemen are the good guys.

I adored the characterisation of Tara, she came across as a little dizzy at the beginning of the story, but by the end of the book, she was a strong female lead. I enjoyed reading how her character developed over the course of the story. Likewise, Michael, the hero of this story, came across as a very likeable protagonist. The romance between Michael and Tara was very sweet in the telling, and it fit the mood of the story beautifully.

The story itself was fast-paced, and it kept me engaged throughout. This is the kind of book you sit down of an evening and read without noticing the time flying by. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

I Highly Recommend.

This book flowed very well and was fast paced. I love how from the very first page it kept me intrigued. I have always been fascinated with the Four horsemen so seeing this spin on them was wonderful, especially Gabby!!! I look forward to the other horsemen's stories as well as more about tara's bloodline and abilities. I love how right at the end they let you in on Michael's Role in the Horsemen by revealing the color of his horse.

I’ve read one other book (Tomoiya’s Story) by author, C.A. King, and enjoyed the fable quality of it. Flower Shields starts that way as it lays out the back story for the novel, but then it becomes more of a modern paranormal adventure/romance.

The story is a quick read that’s told from two points of view. Tara is a seemingly normal young woman whose family is in the funeral home business. She doesn’t want to follow in their footsteps, and her story opens with her searching for a different kind of job. She stops to get coffee in a rundown diner and crosses paths with a man who frightens her—not because of anything he does, but because there’s something in his eyes that reminds her of death.

Michael is a demigod (what we would know as an archangel). He and his siblings have been tasked with guarding the gates of hell. For millennia, they’ve managed just fine, but something has changed—and that something has a lot to do with Tara, who isn’t as “normal” as she first appears.

This book sets the stage for the rest of the story that’s told in the subsequent books, and it teases the reader with the attraction that develops between Tara and Michael. The author does a good job of making the paranormal believable. The main complaint I had was that Tara’s attraction to Michael seemed to make her forget a personal tragedy (can’t say what personal tragedy without giving a spoiler) a little too fast. I also would have liked to have seen a little of Tara’s home life with her parents instead of just having them mentioned but never seen. Other than that, I enjoyed the story. The day I read it, I was feeling awful thanks to allergies, and it helped a miserable day go by fast. My thanks to the author!

What a great start to a new series. I've enjoyed other stories this writer has written (Please do yourself a favor and read "When Leaves Fall") because each story or series has an interesting twist to it.

FLOWER SHIELDS is the first book in the "For Horsemen" series and is super enjoyable and quick to read. There are a lot of lines I highlighted because it was funny or inspiring or taught me something new "Tara was only ten when she first heard about different scents from funeral arrangements warding off evil spirits and demons." "The early bird can't catch the worm if the worm isn't up yet." (I'm going to use this response the next time I hear someone use that phrase.

I love that one of the horsemen is a woman and the mystery that is unfolding as the story goes along.

I'm giving it 5 stars because, although the romance is a little rushed, the story kept me involved and reading until the very end. Also 5 stars because I am absolutely going to be reading about the rest of the other horsemen as they are written/published.

This author has become a "no questions asked" one click pick for me.

Flower Shields written by C.A. King is book one in the Four horsemen Novels. The story is interesting and entertaining all in one. This is the tale of the for horsemen Michael, Gabrielle, Uriel and Raphael. And then there’s Tara, Tara who is always having bad luck it seems. Tara is a good character she’s the type that if there’s a small chance something bad is going to happen, it will happen to her. Michael is arrogant, and sexy. Tara has always had a love for flowers and that’s the only time she feels “normal” after finally finding a job at a local flower shop she starts to learn stuff about herself that her parents kept from her. Flower Shields is a pretty quick read but it has so much to offer with the storyline and characters. I can’t wait to read the rest of the stories.

A page-turning paranormal fantasy.

A fast-paced read that follows Tara and Michael. Tara has a special ancestry her parents never told her about. Michael is one of the gatekeepers keeping Earth safe from the denizens of Hell. Tara’s life is at a crossroads. She failed college and can’t find a job. When a strange man follows Tara one day, her life takes a dramatic turn and her survival becomes the key.
The Flower Shield is a great page-turning story that I can recommend!
