Drawing on the exotic ambience that became the reason for invaders to want to occupy this land, Pannell presents a historical perspective from the days of “milk and honey”. The narrative begins with the medieval ever since which the rise and demise of several ruling dynasties left India to be juggled from one hand to the other only to augment its magnetism. The French, Portuguese and European naval arrivals led to the British settlements leaving the final blow to the subcontinent by forcing its split into 3 parts of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Noting the various impressions on this land, he dissects the evolution of Indian history in a precise and factual manner.

I got an advance reader's copy from Story Cartel to review this book.I assumed it is written for readers of the West, who know little about India and harbor many misconceptions. I read it from that perspective and liked that the author has condensed the whole history and culture of India into a book of 69 pages - that's no mean task. He has also addressed the most common myths and assumptions in a way that shows love, almost a kind of reverence for India. Nevertheless, I am unable to give it a 5-star or even a 4-star rating for three reasons:
1- So few pages do not do justice to the history of a civilization as old and vast as India
2 - There are a few erroneous and hastily written statements such as - Alexander conquered the entire Indian subcontinent and the Bhakti movement condemned image worship. He has written that the name Hinduism "was given by the Persians, who used to occupy the area between the rivers Hindu and Sindh" - shockingly wrong. There never was any river called Hindu and Sindh was the name of the region around the river Sindhu.
3 - Last, but not the least, there are quite a few typos and grammatical errors.

India would never be the same

Through this book, I learned a lot about the rich history behind the scene of this place. Misconceptions were corrected. A nice book short but detailed.
