Fear University #4

Paper Tigers

Rate this book
Fear University has created a new monster … The infamous fear switch research started with me, Patient Zero. But I am a failure. My mind adapted and now I move through the shadows like the creatures I was created to hunt. I spent my entire life in a cage with scalpels in my brain, but I am finally free—thanks to the Commander. I am Zero, and I will make the bad men at Fear University pay. I, Ollie Volkova, have returned to Fear University to rebuild and restore the school to its former standard of protecting the world against monsters, both human and aswang. But something new is killing Original families all over Kodiak Island and nearly assassinated the president of my university. The hunters call it a ghost, but I know she’s something more. Something worse than monsters and men. Something like me. Fear University is my home, and I will kill to protect it. This book is recommended for mature readers due to sexual content, violence, and language.

Paper Tigers is the latest installment in the Fear University series by Meg Collett. I have been highly anticipating this book for the past ten months, and I was practically jumping up and down when it landed on my Kindle. I have said it before and I’ll say it again, this is one of the most unique paranormal fantasies I’ve ever read. I enjoyed the first three books so much, and I was insanely happy to be back in this world with all the characters I have grown to love.

This book picks up following Hex’s attack on the university, and we are thrown right into the aftermath of it all. I’m not going to give a summary of the book. This is the fourth book, and God only knows what I would accidentally spoil! What I will tell you is that the whole gang is back, there is tons of action and suspense, something lurking in the shadows takes center stage, Sunny takes on a new role, Hex and Ollie take care of some unfinished business, and Ollie and Luke have a break through.

What I enjoyed about this book most was watching Ollie continue to grow and come into her own. She is still the badass she always was, but she becomes even more impressive if that’s possible. However, the way she treated Luke got on my nerves, and that is the one thing that I disliked about the story this time around. I realize she had a trauma, and so I will continue to be patient. Earlier in the series, the romance was intense and hot, and I am looking forward to seeing that again. The ending gave me lots of hope for the next book, and I can’t wait to read it! I have a feeling it’s going to be the best one yet!

If you are an urban fantasy/paranormal fantasy lover and you haven’t given this series a try, do it! What sold me on this series the most was how different it was from everything else I had ever read. I mean, we’ve all read countless books about werewolves, fairies, and vampires, but how many have you read about aswangs? She also throws in other mythological creatures along the way that you probably haven’t read much about either. I had never even heard of a manananggal until I read these books! I just wanted to touch on this before I concluded my review, because it’s what drew me in and kept me coming back for more. Meg Collett is amazingly talented, and I want more people to discover her books and fall in love with them the way that I have. If you’ve already read the first 3 books, then I know you are going to continue with the series, because it’s too good not to. Everybody else, go one-click Fear University and enjoy!

Book 4 of the Fear University series is the best yet. Ollie, Luke, Sunny, Hatter, they're all back to continue their fight against the Aswangs that attacked the University. But this time it goes so much farther than just them.
Meg Collett has really out done herself with this one

If you've been following my reviews about the Fear University series, I've declared all my love and admiration to this woman who had encapsulated Filipino folklore in her novels, Meg Collett. And the mere mention of aswang in the story easily gives me the creeps. The crazy kind of creeps that makes me shiver in fear and anticipate in excitement. I haven't met any other author who had written a story about aswangs, manananggal, kapre in an intricately detailed and extensive manner, much scarier and more nerve-racking than the one featured in the TV series Grimm (in 2014). I kid you not.

Now on to the fourth installment in the series. Paper Tigers.

The aswangs are back, and so are the aswang hunters and the halflings. Ollie had convinced Dean to let the halflings enter Fear University, against his bitter judgment, completely certain that aswangs are monsters, not half-good, not half-monstrous.

And then there's Zero. She had wormed her way in the university, and Dean almost cost his life, but still lived, gripping in fear. Zero had found him, and he was sure he'd soon die in her hands. In her daughter's hands. But she didn't anticipate The Fearless One and the One Who Don't Feel Pain. And for that, Zero is back to being zero.

The fight scenes, the aswangs, the shadows, the fear switch, the antidote, the lovestruck pairs, the traitors, the war, the confused daughter, the Queen!

I am fumbling here, I know; I wish I could narrate the entire book and tell you how awesome Paper Tigers is. But I must stop before I blurt out the whole story. You need to read this for yourself. You need to meet the woman behind this amazing series.

OMG, this has been a crazy ride and I can't stop myself from screaming. Meg Collett is a genius and I want the whole world to know that. For me, she could be the next Sarah J. Maas. Paper Tigers is a must read. 'nuff said.

4.5 STARS!

As I was flying through the pages of this story, I would often come to an abrupt halt just so I could re-read passages. The writing was really that good. I love the way Ms. Collett strings her words together. Whether the scene involves bone-chilling terror, gut-wrenching inner thoughts, or sarcasm-laden dialogue, it's all vivid and practically leaps off the page. This whole series has been a pleasure to read and this installment was no exception with the continuation of its subtle themes of love, acceptance, and friendship.

Best of all, Ollie's quick-tempered, bad-ass self makes a come-back! Though she's still not quite her old self after the events of book 2, it's close. Slowly her relationship with Luke comes back online, while Sunny and Hatter continue their push and pull, all while they face a new foe: Zero.

Zero's addition as a narrator of the story was really well done, and there was a good twist near the end that caught me completely off-guard. LOL, I still haven't learned to expect the unexpected from this author!

I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of book 5!

A fantastic addition to the series! An action-packed thrill ride. I was on the edge of my seat never knowing what to expect. I loved the different twists and turns and the whirlwind of emotions.
I loved how this story dives deeper into the characters and we get to see them evolve and grow.
I can't wait to see what happens next!

Installment 4 was so much better than 3! The author returned to her magic formula used in both 1 and 2. Back to snappy dialogue, continued strong character development and an action-packed story that keeps one turning pages. I'm hoping the final installment of book 5 wraps it all up in the same way.

From new "monsters", more problems, that ever present fear switch, and the toll of the unknown of Fear University and its inhabitants, it seems like Ollie, Sunny, Luke, and Hatter can't catch a break.

It was great coming back to this series and picking up from where Monster Mine left off. Seeing the aftermath of Hex's attack on the school and how everyone reacted to the new threat to . It was interesting to see a new POV alongside Ollie and Sunny, Zero really brought a new perspective on the other side of humans and aswang war, and really gave some insight (and incentive to Ollie and the co. to look further) to the research to perfect the fear switch and how fucked up Dean and his experiments are.

While the story seemed short compared to the first 3 books, (maybe it was because I didn't want the book to end!) it still packed a lot of action and a lot of info was revealed. We get introduced to Zero, the pack dynamics and leadership is explained, the true motives of Dean are revealed, and a lot of good writing done by author Meg Collett bring the characters into new situations that will change them for the better of Fear University. The ones who stayed and look up Ollie as their leader, know that they want to protect the world against the real monsters and they're what Fear University really stands for.

I am definitely looking forward to book 5!

I need to see more of my favorite couple, Ollie and Luke. They finally overcame the obstacles from the previous book, and a little bit of this one, and have accepted that they love each other and Ollie finally found out that Love is the strongest of all. (actually Ollie worded that way better than I did lol)

Also, I need to know what happens to Hatter and if he'll be okay, with his mania and how will he hunt, will he be okay with Sunny's decision to fight, etc, plus I really hope that he and Sunny finally end up together and that Sunny does as kickass job in being Ollie's partner and with the antidote.

And dare I say I ship Thad and Zero/Nikki? Hopefully she comes back in the next book and there's no more Commander and they get to take their place at Fear University. (fingers crossed)

I always look forward to how Ollie and Sunny grow into themselves and become stronger. I can't wait for the next book to see what direction Ollie and the gang will take Fear University in!

It's truly an intense story and this series has made it to one of my all time favorites. It's an action packed thriller with some craziness on the side. More please! This series goes along with some Filipino folklore that I never knew existed. This author has brought Aswangs to life in this series along with some new monsters that we love to hate. Ollie is our lead female, she is a strong warrior halfling (half human and half aswang) that has come back with a vengeance. She has come back to bring Fear University to its former glory but is then put on hold due to some gruesome deaths. There is a "ghost" that lives in the shadows, going on killing sprees and has Fear University in it's sights. Turns out that this ghost is actually the first "successful" experiment with the fear switch. But Zero adapted and now is on Fear University's radar. There is so much more going on behind this part of the story. Sunny is working on an antidote for the aswang saliva, Hatter is still manic, and Luke is still in love with Ollie. People are scared. Some are running and some are fighting. Saviors or fighters? The group has been put in some crazy situations, desperate times call for desperate measures. They are all holding on to themselves while discovering who they really are. And lets not forget their families....some make a reappearance in this story. Some heartfelt and some heart wrenching. I can't wait for more! Meg Collett did it again!

What defines a monster? Is it the ability to feel fear, taste it? What about to feel pain? Ollie thought she was a monster. That her time with Max had changed her. They were going back into battle. Which monster would win? This time Ollie and Sunny or the rest of the gang may not make it out.

A great story with our old friends and colleagues. There is plenty of excitement and emotional battles going on and this writer feeds us just enough to keep us glued to each word and action. This battle is being fought on many levels and we get to explore each one. Wonderful read like we always expect from the this author and she never disappoints.

I am so in love with this series!!! I have been reading this author's books since the beginning, no matter what kind of read you like, her books will have you hooked. In this series, you have a kick ads girl, Ollie, as the main character. Ollie and her gang of misfits, have had to battle many enemies so far, but nothing can compare to the newest threat, Zero. As the group has been learning, there are two sides to every story, keep your enemies closer (in case you need to destroy them), and even your weakest link sometimes become your greatest weapon. The winds of change are about to come blowing through!!

This series is amazing! I re-read books 1-3 in preparation for Paper Tigers and it reminded me how much I love these books.

Action packed, mysterious with incredible characters, including two kick ass heroines. I love the way the author writes her heroines and makes them the ones saving the day. I thought this was the final book but I'm so excited to realize there is going to be more. 5 Stars!

Non Stop Awesome

Fresh, unique, intoxicating. This is the fourth book in this series and each one gets even better then the one before. I absolutely love Ollie, she is the epitome of heroin. From book one her character has came so far, developed with such intensity. Meg Collett has done such an awesome job developing all the characters in this book. Sunny oh my goodness!! I don't want this story to end.
In this book Ollie and her friends are back at Fear University protecting what's left after the attack. Ollie embracing her roll of leader and her mother's legacy. Sunny is done being the wall flower. Luke and Hatter are both swoon worthy boyfriends and allies. Ollie deals with her father, her relationship, friendship, and leadership. This is definitely a must read.
I can't recommend this series enough to paranormal lovers. It is unlike anything I've read before and Meg writes it so very well. The plot has been seamless. It's a steady read, no slow boring chapters. No annoying descriptions of rooms or scenes to get word counts up. Just non stop action with some romance, friendship and family drama thrown in!!
I was given an arc of this book by the author for a fair, honest review.
I also bought a copy for myself after it was released.

LOVE LOVE this series! Ollie, Sunny, Luke, and Hatter are baaackkkk! They're still fighting to save Fear University but now there's someone new out there that's out to get them, Zero. Zero is uses the darkness to fight and brings pain, add her to the mix with Hex and his crew and lots of fighting going on. And with Zero comes new knowledge of testing that's being done and was done. With what they find out they now have others to save.

The author once again blows your mind with her stories! The surprises in this book have your head spinning. And it's not just the secrets that are found out but the changes to everyone. It's just WOW! It's a series that must be read and find your reading spot and stock up on snacks cause you're not going to want to move once you start! Can't wait to more! I received a copy under no obligation.

Meg did it again! This book is like nothing I have ever read before!
I love Ollie and Sunny, they may disagree on some thing but they always have each others backs. They balance each other out and I love that about then.Luke and Hatter definitely have their hands full with these 2.
The new character, Zero, we find out is patient zero. She is so damaged by what was done to her that she is even more dangerous then the aswags! I LOVE this character! I want to know more about her!
The twist and turns have you on the edge of you set from the 1st word to the last.
Stock up on cereal or prepare to order out so the kids can eat cause once you start it is impossible to put down.
I need so much more in this series!Meg is a twisted Genius!

Paper Tigers Review

Another awesome installment for the Fear University Series.
Trouble never seems to take a vacation for Ollie and her friends. And every time they think the big bad has been beaten something even more frightening pops up to take it's place.
Luckily for everyone Ollie likes a good challenge and her pack will always have her back.

I love these characters and really enjoy watching them find themselves and grow into the amazing people they are meant to be. I can't get enough of this world and can't wait to find out what is in-store for them in the next book. In my opinion Paper Tigers is absolutely recommended.

This Author never ceases to amaze me. Every book in this series has left me breathless more than once and hanging on by a thread the entire time. I can't get enough of this series, it's characters and the suspense, the thrills, the "oh my god" moments. And I always enjoy Ollie's smart mouth, Sunny's observations and loyalty, Luke's passion, dedication to Hatter and Ollie showing how tight these characters are to one another and how even in the darkness, they are always beside one another...no matter what.

This series is one thrill ride after another. The books read so fast and is so action packed, I feel like I'm watching a movie. I love the way Sunny has grown in this book and has really become a force to contend with.

Ollie needs all her friends -- now more than ever as she faces more darkness in this book.

In true Ollie style, she finds her way by kicking bums and taking names.

I was hoping for something different for Zero, but I have a feeling this isn't the last we've seen of her.
At least I hope not.

Great read! I hated finishing it, but I couldn't put it down. Ugh!

Hunter or Hunted?

You can't take a childhood away from a child without repercussions. The repercussions from Zero's loss are massive. Can she be saved? Who is the mysterious Commander that controls her?

Ollie's troubles with Dean and Hex escalate, as does Sunny's research issues. Relationships are changing left, right and centre and they will have to lose everything if they want to have anything at the end.

Some prices are too high to be paid, but paid they must be.

Once again Meg has blown me away. Paper Tigers was just as good as the first four, delving deeper into each character and the story of Ollie, Hex and Dean.
It was so great to be reunited with Ollie, Luke, Sunny and Hatter. It was great to see how their relationships have evolved, as individuals, as couples and a group.
There's ones scene that is smoking hot and it's one of my favs from Paper Tigers.
I love love love the FU series.

The 4th book in this remarkably brilliant series. Our favourite hunters Ollie, Luke, Hatter and Sunny are trying to rebuild a Fear University. This is easier said than done with danger coming from all sides and a new, extremely dangerous enemy thrown into the mix. Will our heroes win the day and if so, at what cost? Completely engrossing and utterly thrilling, Meg never fails to deliver a book you simply can't put down until you finish the very last word.

Speechless.

Out of all the books so far in this series, this one left me speechless. So many feels. Ollie is still bad a$$ and slightly broken. Sunny is kinda gangster now, and Luke and Hatter are learning to be codependent on their ladies.
Zero broke my heart. I hope that in further books we learn more of her, and she ends up finding purpose.
I also can't wait to see how this whole hunter, 'em and halfling thing goes. Super excited for the next book!

I am always blown away be how great this series is. Every single book just blows the one before it away. Ollie is simply the perfect lead character and Sunny is a prefect counterpart. I finished this book in one day! As soon as I was notified that this book was out, I bought it because I had to find out of that was going to happen. I hope this isn't the end of the series. I liked the direction Sunny's story went in and I'm very happy with Ollie's story as well.

Disappointed is where this series has gone. I loved the first 3 books, but this one didn't cut it for me. I want more of Ollie like when the series started. I didn't want so much Sunny and even Zero having her own chapters was annoying. I don't like the person Sunny has turned into- it's super annoying. Ollie was suppose to be special and yet now it seems that everyone has a special ability :(

I liked it but not as much as the first 3 books in the series. I’m not sure why. Maybe because it had been a while since I read them so I just wasn’t as invested in the characters. Or maybe because I felt like the story was done and this was just a watered down version of the same dramas and the intensity of the first 3 book just wasn’t there.

Paper Tigers

Another great book by Meghan Collette. Ollie finds out that they had experimented on a girl about 20 years ago that they called Patient Zero. They were doing experiments on their brains to try to get them not to feel fear. They felt they had succeeded with her but had to turn her over to the military cause they funded the research. Zero has come back for revenge.

Phenomenal! My favourite book in FU series so far, every detail makes you love the characters you have feelings for through out the rest of previous books so much more!

Read it start to finish in about 10 hours couldn’t stop reading to find out what happened next.

Don’t know whether I’m more excited or sad to be moving onto the last book!

Paper Tigers is book 4 in this series, and it just gets better.
I love where Meg is taking this series, it keeps me on the edge of my seat and the twists and turns never disappoint.
We get a deeper look into the past of the Aswang hunters, Fear University and what really went on in the past. And trust me, it will have you gripped from page 1! We meet new characters, but also get a healthy dose of our favourites. We see how relationships are developing, especially that of Sunny and Hatter. I love how we see more of these secondary characters in this installment and watch how they are growing, I really love these two!!
You need to read the previous 3 books and if you haven't already, I strongly advise that you do! You won't be disappointed.
