Before Jesus broke the bread, he blessed it. In the age of social media, where people’s lives are curated to show only their best and most beautiful selves, it is easy for an individual person to believe that they are the only one who is broken. The truth is that everyone is broken and in need of God’s blessing. No one has it all together; no person is perfect. In essays both humorous and achingly vulnerable, author Ryan Casey Waller urges readers to join him in pouring out their brokenness, not just to God but to each other. Waller takes readers through the trials of following Jesus during seasons of doubt and disbelief, anger, shame, and even hate, but always comes back to the amazing news that Jesus blessed the bread before he broke it. Through Jesus, brokenness is blessed, wounds healed, and hearts made whole.
I liked it, but I liked his newer book better, probably because this one is more based on when he was a priest and I know what happened in that situation.
This book is like a sermon in each chapter, or could have been. Short, personal stories well related to the Gospel. Honest and easy to follow, a quick read.
A friend gave me this book to read and I loved it. I really liked the individual, stand alone chapters which tied back to the scripture. The pastor is real and owns it.
This is going on my bedside table along with Thanks, Help, Wow by Anne Lamott. It has been a comforting and guiding read, and will be there when I need to call or reassure myself.
