A coral reef! Beneath sparkling ocean waves, sunbeams shine on a world of strange shapes and brilliant colors.
Well designed for reading aloud with TK-1st grade. Colorful photos with plenty of close-ups. Clear content that builds (appropriately for the audience) - what a coral reef is made of (coral polyps), the creatures that occupy, move through a coral reef from day to night. LOVE that Esbaum does not shy away from beautiful, challenging vocabulary as she describes the creatures that chomp, scrunch, snack, sneak. Lots of room for rereading and asking young ones to move in the same way the creatures do! And for asking questions like "What did you just learn that's fascinating to you?" and "Why is a coral reef important?"
ONE WISH - Just wish the format was a bit bigger. With bigger groups, you might need to use a document camera or access the Kindle version.
PARTNER THIS TEXT WITH - *The Mysterious Sea Bunny by Peter Raymundo for a close-up look at one creature that lives in a coral reef (nonfiction) *Alba and the Ocean Cleanup by Lara Hawthorne (fiction) about a fish named Alba who finds herself living in a ocean of litter until a young girl helps her solve the problem
This worked perfectly for a ocean-themed storytime. The kids (preschool age) loved the vibrant pictures and learning the names of different kinds of fish, coral, and other sea creatures. The minimal text on the pages (I think the max was two sentences) made this good for young ones with limited attention spans.
Marine Theme: We liked it. It's about right for reading to 4-6 year olds as it uses lots of colourful photos and very short amounts of text. It's not really an early reader so much as a good visual prompt for discussions and story writing as part of an enquiry.
Miss 5 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
