Megan Malone is the ultimate homebody. When her sister talks her into going on The Leftover, a local version of the TV show Survivor, she isn’t sure she’ll make it past the first vote. Cane Trevino is nursing a broken heart by joining the show as a medic. With time away from his regular job and a dozen contestants to distract him, he hopes he can finally get over the woman he thought was “the one.”
I’m a huge fan of reality TV so when I first read the blurb for The Leftover I was soooo in. When people ask what my other hobbies are besides reading/blogging I always want to say I’m a reality TV aficionado (😂😳) so the idea of two of my favorite pastimes merging was pretty much the perfect combination for me.
Megan is the sweetest character, she’s not your typical chick lit heroine. She’s awkward, goofy and clumsy but she is so cute and endearing. When her sister talks her into taking her spot on the local version of Survivor she is beyond nervous but figures she’ll get voted off pretty quickly, so why not give it a shot? Then she finds out Cane, a local celebrity is the shows medic and things get a little complicated because she has a pretty major crush on him.
As much as I like romance novels to break things up between my beloved crime novels I’m not a huge fan of love scenes. I always feel uncomfortable reading them and find myself skimming over them. I was so relieved when I realized this was a clean romance and even more relieved when it wasn’t cheesy whatsoever. It was infused with so much humor and funny moments and the burgeoning romance between Megan and Cane was sweet and easy.
This was an light, breezy read with a completely relatable and lovable protagonist. I was rooting for Megan from page one and loved seeing her gain self confidence and become comfortable in her own skin. This was one of those books that just makes you happy, you can’t help but smile while you’re reading and sometimes that’s exactly the type of book that I need!
The most interaction she had with the opposite sex was when the pizza boy—pimple faced and barely legal to drive—delivered food to her house.
The advantage of being the quietest in the bunch was that when she spoke, people generally thought she might have something worthwhile to say.
My Review:
The Leftover had a cute and interesting premise of a Nebraska style Survivor program produced by a local TV station and featuring area residents as contestants. Megan was nearly thirty and had never been kissed and was socially and physically awkward, but when her outgoing sister Molly was found ineligible to compete on the program, Molly bribed Megan into taking her place on the program. Written in the third person omniscient and limited to a dual perspective, the light storyline was insightful, humorous, and mild enough for my elderly mother’s book club. I enjoyed Ms. William’s wry humor as evidenced in the sneakiness of the competitors schemes, the program host always speaking of herself in the third person and using her full name of Wendy Weathersby; and Megan’s observations and nicknaming a few of her fellow contestants before learning their names - she had dubbed them Skyscraper, The Banker, Spunky Brewster, and Talons. Megan surprised everyone, including herself, while suffering through hunger, the double-dealing and shenanigans of back-stabbing competitors, physical and social challenges, developing a crush on a crew member, and all while battling the elements and the wrath of mother nature. She came through the experience a changed person and it was an entertaining process to witness.
Megan will find more than love in this romantic comedy that will keep you company in a sweet and leisured time. She will find her confidence and that is what the fuss is all about!
Megan Malone is a geek, shy, stay-at-home person, avoiding social life if she can. Her sister Molly, though is a different story. She is outgoing, loveable, active and sportive. Molly loves “Survivor” show and when the local channel is setting up a similar local show, she is right into it. When she gets rejected due to pregnancy, she convinces the produces she will bring her replacement her own. The replacement she has in mind is no other than her sister. And Megan would do anything for her sister, even going to a Survivor-like TV show.
Cane Trevino is recovering from a heartbreak. The woman he thought to be meant for him, chose to be with someone else and this is something he never saw coming. He is now the medic in the new show in local TV, in parallel with his normal job as a paramedic. Work will help him not think about the love and the woman he lost.
It is not the first time to read a book that is actually telling the story of a reality TV show, but it is a good one! The atmosphere is not only about the game but it is also on the character that it focuses on. Megan is a person that would never file for a TV show. She is shy, clumsy, avoids social life, cannot meet people’s eyes easily and does not leave her house is she does not have to. She is not confident, she doesn’t believe in herself and in her capabilities. She is like most teanagers, only a little older. This theme is wonderful to write on.
Through the book we see Megan’s transformation to a person that overcomes her fears and complexes and evolves to a complete human being. She even finds love, as she finds the courage to look someone in the eye and even go and talk to people. This big challenge is what pushes megan out of her shell. Same goes with everything we are afraid of. And that is a positive message. To overcome our fears and weaknesses, all we need to do is phase them, get into a situation that we actually have a really good reason to do things that otherwise we wouldn’t. Like if it was a survival issue or a matter of doing something for someone we love.
What a fun read. Kept me engaged from the first page to the last! Many laugh out loud moments with an endearing heroine an engaging hero. So glad I received an ARC of this great book. Happy reading!
The Leftover by Brooke Williams a thrilling four-star read. This is my first read by this author and I will be reading more, she writes funny and heart-felt with an honest quality to it. There was a great rom-com element to the story, but also a sharp wit and humour that shows true quality to the writing. The characters in this book were well rounded and had plenty of variety, they weren’t all the same type of person just named different things, the two sisters were so much fun to read. I have read several similar stories to this plot recently, but I thought this was a great example. There was just the right amount of drama and reality along with some funny and sweet circumstances. The dynamic between the sisters was so well done. There was a great sense of honest sisterliness brewing between them. If you want a sweet and honest romance with some great stories sewn in this is the read for you.
I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand I really liked reading it, but on the other hand I’m afraid it won’t stick for that long … Let’s start with some down sides, so I can end on a positive note!
I thought the “love at first sight” between Megan and Cane was a little unrealistic, because Megan was supposed to be the huge nerd-girl and Cane the hunk. Because of this I didn’t really know how to imagine Megan in my head. She was supposed to be this huge wallflower, but, at the same time, Cane fell for her when he first saw her. Is she supposed to be this highly attractive introvert who just isn’t aware of it herself? (besides her sister telling her that) I just had a hard time envisioning Megan in my mind, but that didn’t take away on me liking her personality! Now, I’m not trying to say that I think people who are seen as ‘nerds’ aren’t supposed to have handsome partners, not at all! I’m just comparing these characters with the stereotypes I see in other books and films.
I had a hard time really rooting for their relationship. This lead to me thinking about this book as just “okay”. I didn’t really have the idea that they were meant for each other. Mostly because when the drama started (the drama every romance has so I’m not really spoiling anything) they seemed to have a hard time with it, but also getting over each other very easily …
Onto the positive sides of this story! I found the subject, besides the romance, to be very original. The set is a reality TV show, a competition, so you’ll not only root for the two lovebirds, but also for those you want to win the challenges. In real life I always root for the “nerd” in reality shows, just because I can identify myself with them the most. So, of course, I rooted for Megan. Besides my troubles with envisioning Megan, I loved the fact that the main character of this romance was a real wallflower. Something you don’t often see in romance novels. Megan went through a big personality change throughout the story, from insecure to more confident, and I really liked that aspect!
All in all, this story was a little too mild for me: I kind of missed the steamier scenes and the drama wasn’t like the drama I’m used to in romance novels. But the setting definitely made up for that!
*I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
I'm all in for a nice, romantic read but The Leftover by Brooke Williams, is one such book with different exciting experiences for us readers. Releasing today, the book is a winner (in my eyes) already!
Megan Malone joins a reality show called The Leftover as a replacement for her sister, Molly, who just found out she is pregnant and hence cannot continue with the show. An overly shy Megan, who prefers spending time alone and talking to herself suddenly find herself in front of the camera among a group of contestants. She barely registers all of this when she realizes she has a crush on Cane Trevino, the medic on the show. The show begins and as the competition gets tighter, Megan finds she is much more than just an under confident girl and also that she is falling harder for Cane. Cane does seem to reciprocate but he himself is getting over a bad breakup with the sizzling, hot Eva. Would Cane really prefer the simple, bespectacled Megan? And among the strategizing contestants, who would ultimately win the competition to be, The Leftover?
The Leftover is a romantic book but not too mushy or overly sentimental and I really like that about it. Coming to the technicalities, the narrative is an absolute breeze. The writing is perfect that concentrates only on the actual situation at hand and does not waver with unnecessary details. The characters of Cane and Megan, among others, is described aptly giving a perfect background to each one of them. The events, be it the competition or the feelings of the characters, are very relevant and to-the-point.
Now, about my thoughts. I found The Leftover to be a very good read. Why? Because it is different. It obviously includes romance but the story line is something that makes it more exciting for us readers. The reality show was explained so well that it felt like I was actually watching it. The strategies and tricks played by the contestants are so thrilling and stimulating, it is so much fun!
Last word. Brooke Williams has knitted this fun, lovable story so well that it feels live. A spoonful of fear, a dash of thrill and a scoop of romance and exhilaration makes The Leftover a cozy read, perfect for the coming weekend.
This story is so much fun! I love rom-com, sweet romances, and Survivor...this book has them all! Megan finds herself as a contestant on a local reality show similar to Survivor, but she couldn't be less enthused. However, when she meets the cute medic sparks fly. Can Megan keep herself focused on the game enough to have a chance at winning? Or will she make a fool of herself and lose the game AND the guy?
Fun, light, and sweet - I really enjoyed this audio book! The witty banter between the characters had me laughing out loud and the romance was super sweet. I usually prefer books that are more on the steamier side but I honestly didn't even miss it in this one.
Megan Malone's a quite homebody. She never did well with people, preferring to stay in her house, work at her home business, and let the world go by. Her sister, Molly, persuades Megan to take her place on the new local reality television show, The Leftover. A show similar to Survivor, Megan knows she has no skills to offer.
Cane's the medic for the show. Once a contestant on Accept This Dandelion, he's trying to heal a broken heart. He thought they had fallen in love, however, in the last episode, his wonderful world collapsed as his love ran off with the producer/host of the show. He hopes time from his job, new surrounding, and people, help heal his hurting heart.
Megan, sweet, quite, shy, and a loner, meets her crush from Accept This Dandelion; while Cane finds a shy young women who will not meet his eyes. With all the different personalities, will Cane find his heart healing? Will Megan find a way to come out of her shell and take part? Let the fun begin as the contestants vie for position of the last person left standing. My romance book reviews of The Leftover follows.
CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, AND DEVELOPMENT:
Author Brooke Williams, created an entertaining book in The Leftover. Having read other books with this story-line, I thought I would not care to read another book with the same old theme. However, I'm thrilled to say, I loved this book. Including a variety of personalities, scheming in the background, back stabbing galore, conniving, some good people, some really obnoxious, arrogant selfish ones, and then to round out the contestants, sweet shy Megan. Developing each of her characters to their full potential, I found myself hating Andrew; he's arrogant, egotistical, and a bully. What a character Brooke Williams crafted in Andrew. I wanted to "tell him off" during most of the book. Other characters you will love; as each proves they are good people and better friends.
Watching Brooke Williams develop Megan's personalities was wonderful; Megan comes into her own. As Megan stated and I quote:
"She'd finally found her voice...and her self-worth".
She finds confidence, stamina, the ability to talk to people, and she stands on her own merit; which began with the help of Cane as her anchor. The romance between Megan and Cane builds throughout the story. Williams matured Cane as he came to know Megan. One who always fell fast, Cane knew it would not be fair to use Megan as a crutch for his aching heart. Will they overcome misunderstandings and misinterpretations to find happy ever after? Sorry, you'll have to read the book to find out how all this ends.
Brooke Williams' writing is easy to follow as she created scenes which transition smoothly and her writing flowed well. The plot keeps you intrigued; wondering who's the next person eliminated. The pace of the book's just right for the story's length. With well-developed characters and clean sweet romance, I found I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Leftover. Perfect for a lazy afternoon of reading pleasure.
The only small point I should make: the words used for cussing instead of cuss words made me pause. When I read the first couple, I thought they were editing errors, typos, or a download problem. However, I shortly realized it's Williams method of handling vulgarity without using vulgarity. Sometimes I am a little slow on the up take. So if you are too, please know these are not editing errors or mistakes. How imaginative of Brooke Williams!
With clean clear writing, varied personalities, alliances made and broken, misunderstandings, and sweet romance, I would not hesitate to buy The Leftover for myself or a friend. Romance book reviews are not always easy to create, however, Brooke Williams crafted a book I easily reviewed giving high marks for prose, characters, content, structure, and development.
THE LEFTOVER RECOMMENDATION: STARS 4
FINALLY, PLEASE NOTE:
Additionally, I received this book from the author and chose to voluntarily review the book with honest romance book reviews. Description: Megan reluctantly agrees to take her sister’s place on a reality TV Show called The Leftover after her dear sister discovers she is pregnant and becomes disqualified from participating at the last minute. The show is like Survivor but on a smaller local level and Megan being very shy and lacking survival skills wants nothing to do with it. Due to their close bond and a strong sense of loyalty she eventually accepts the call to adventure and experiences much more than she could have imagined.
In Short: Overall this is a great book. I don’t usually like contemporary romances but every once in a while one like this comes along and gives me a whole new appreciation for the genre. This book is very funny too, I laughed out loud many times. A must read for anyone who likes clean romantic comedies. If you also like reality TV, you’ll love this book because it is set mostly behind the scenes (and on camera too) of a reality TV show that is similar to Survivor.
Pros: I loved the complexity of our main character, Megan. She is introverted and a bit awkward but by trade she is a talented voice actor. Although for some reason she doesn’t use this term and instead just says she “talks for a living” which always came off so awkward. She definitely is a modest character who often sells herself short, but that doesn’t stop her from giving it her all on the show. I really liked how she listened to her sister and was willing to go out of her comfort-zone at times to give her sister’s suggestions a try. She was such a likable character it made the story really enjoyable to read. I loved the character development throughout the story too. Not just Megan’s transformation but some of the other characters as well. I loved Grace, she is a strong and genuinely good person who is a great role model. I liked Megan’s sister, Molly. I think she brings out her sister’s potential and I shudder to think how lonely Megan would have ended up if she didn’t have her sister to always encourage her to get out there. Now on to the male characters, there are 2 I want to talk about. The ‘villain’ and the romantic lead. The villain is a fellow contestant on the show, and OMG I hate this guy. Wow, he was so well written I really feel like I hate him and he isn’t even real. He did bring additional conflicts, humor and subterfuge to the story, which did make it interesting. But, I still hate him. The romantic lead is a very likable character and he makes it a very sweet story. This book is well written and smooth and easy to read. The story is interesting and full of action and twists. The idea of the reality show and seeing how the contestants did in the competitions was really interesting. I really, really loved how Megan did on the show, but I wont spoil any of those juicy details. Lastly, I have to say I loved the ending. It was perfect!
Cons: I don’t have any notable issues with this book.
Parent’s Guide: Clean romance. I didn’t notice any swearing or rough language. There was no sex.
I was given a free copy of this book in return for my honest review. Full review on the blog.
The Leftover is a light-hearted, sweet romantic comedy by Brooke Williams. This is the first time I have read any of Ms. Williams books and I enjoyed the story and the connection between Megan and Cane. I would definitely read more of Ms. Williams work. Megan Malone is a freelance voice actor who does voice-over work, commercials and audiobooks- she works out of her home, preferring her own company to mixing with people. Megan is a little geeky, self-conscious, socially awkward and endearingly clumsy. So, the last place she thought she’d ever find herself would be on a television show, put under the scrutiny of thousands, as a contestant being put through all kinds of trials. So, how did she find herself in this predicament you may ask. Well, her sister Molly had signed on for a local television production based on ‘Survivor’- but ended up failing the medical due to being pregnant. Because the show was scheduled to begin shooting very soon, Molly volunteered Megan in her place. Since Molly had done so much for Megan over the years, and knowing how much the show meant to her sister, Megan felt obligated to agree. But she was fairly certain that she would live to regret her decision to take her sisters place on the show. Cane Trevino is somewhat of a local celebrity after appearing on a television show just over a year ago. His experience on the show is something he would rather forget, but unfortunately people recognise him and inevitably bring up the show- dredging up his painful memories. He’s funny, cute and caring- but he always gets relegated to the ‘friend’ status when it came to women, never the soulmate. After his heartbreak, he no longer trusts his instincts when it comes to the opposite sex. He desperately needs to find a way to move on. He works as a paramedic and is really good at his job. Because of this, and the fact he knew the producer, he was asked to take the position of medic for the new show. He’s looking forward to working on the show and the much-needed change of pace and welcome distraction it will bring. What happens when you put a local celebrity together with the introverted underdog? You really will have to read the story to find out what happens…. This was a fun read that had a really cute, charming feel to it. The characters were great, I loved every interesting, quirky and endearing detail. They really were great together and made for some entertaining reading. I did have a bit of an issue with the book and that was with the dialogue running into ‘each other’. It made parts of the story a little confusing, not knowing who is speaking, which slows down the reading of the story and breaks the flow. I liked how the book ended and thought it was a fitting ending to the story. If you like a lovely, sweet, romantic story with a bit of an adventure- than this is definitely the story for you.
The last thing Megan Malone would do is go on a reality TV show. That’s not exactly what the wire-frame, “frizzy mess” Megan saw herself doing. But when her newly pregnant sister drops out of a Survivor-style show called The Leftover, she really had no other choice. The show could be the start of a whole new world…or be a completely embarrassing disaster.
Megan was never described as graceful, athletic, or social in any way. In fact, “the most interaction she had with the opposite sex was when the pizza boy—pimple faced and barely legal to drive—delivered food to her house.” (6) I liked Megan. She was cute, shy, and quirky with that “subtle sarcasm”—the everyday girl. Kind of reminded me of me.
Then along comes Cane, a paramedic and a former contestant on a reality dating show, who still harbored a broken heart for the woman he thought he loved. “He was every woman’s best friend and no woman’s soul mate.” (14) In trying to forget about his past and move on, he’s stuck being the medic for this show, but it may not be as bad as he thought once he meets Megan.
In preparation for the show, Megan must succumb to tasks she would’ve never touched with a 10-foot pole. And when she meets the competition, most of them looking like gladiators, she realizes that she was way over her head. “Did Megan have the right intuition to know who was lying, who was forming alliances, who could be played, and how?” (53) Talk about being on the “wrong side of the numbers.” Fortunately, Megan has the alliance and support of Cane. Looks like Megan might have more to win than she thought.
A well-written, down-to-earth story full of warmth and hilarity! It’s a tale that pushes the boundaries and tests the limits. Emotions rise high when the game turns more into a battle zone with alliances forming and enemies surfacing. Who will be left standing on this Cast Away island? There may have been a few too many characters to keep track of and sometimes the game got a little confusing. You actually feel like you’re watching an episode of Survivor with behind-the-scene shots, cast commentaries, and elimination rounds. Over the course, this starts to get a bit daunting (I was never much into reality shows.) But, still, the main focus was obviously on Megan and Cane, which had the endearing story line.
Audiences will cheer for the lovable and awkward Megan as she jumps through outrageous hurdles. She may not fit in with the crowd, but she’s no push-over either. A fish out of water with no clue, she trudges along, picking up as much as she can, taking it one step at a time—“one foot in front of the other.” After all, that was all she could do. Story is a wonderful beacon to the catch phrase: “I y’am what I y’am.”
“Are you ready for this?... The Leftover.” I am one of those readers that will read a book front to back, from the author’s notes to the teasers and more. I usually say this in most of my reviews that I leave because a lot of times I will find that the author will leave a hidden gem amongst the pages of their dedications. Brooke Williams in fact left one in The Leftover. “Don’t’ wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So, what? Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident, and more and more successful.” ~Mark Victor Hansen This had me glued to the pages of this novel before the plot was even laid out. I could tell there was going to be some wisdoms to be learned through the story and the characters that I am about to read about. Megan Malone is a shy introverted woman, the exact opposite of her fraternal twin sister, Molly. She is more content living the quiet less adventurous life and leaving that up to her sister. Things are about to change for Megan though. “She loved her sister and there wasn’t much she wouldn’t do for her, but go on a reality TV show in her place? Not happening.” Well at least not at first does she agree. Until she finds out that her sister can’t go because she is newly pregnant. “There will be twelve contestants, including you, and they’re taping the show over a week and a half. Each day, you’ll some kind of competition and, each night there will be an elimination. So, to get to the end, you’ll have to last nine days. That’s all!... Instead of being the sole survivor like on the national show, the winner will be crowned the Leftover.” Megan embarks on this two-week life changing experience with zero idea as to what she is about to get into. She is tested in all obstacles of life; not just those of physical stamina, but mental, and emotional, and those matters of the heart too. The heart comes into play when she starts to fall for the medic on set, Cane Trevino. He is nursing his own broken heart and is doing the job as a means to escape his feelings. This was my first read by Brooke Williams but I found it to be very well written, funny, witty, and charming. I look forward to picking more of her novels in the near future.
I am so happy that I read this book when I did! I was starting a brief vacation for the July 4th holiday, and I wanted to make sure I started it off right with a good book. Turns out - this was the perfect book to choose! It was a quick read, with a ton of humor and unique, engaging characters. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book from beginning to end.
Megan Malone is going to kill her sister. After receiving the happy news that her sister, Molly, is pregnant, Megan is informed that she will be replacing her on the reality tv show, The Leftover, a local version of the internationally famous Survivor. Geeky, awkward, homebody Megan is the polar opposite of Molly, but she can't let her big sister down. She agrees, with the condition that she gets to name the baby if she wins the competition. Risking life and limb on a beach in the midst of a storm? Sure, she can deal. Coming face-to-face with her crush, Cane Trevino, former tv heartthrob and The Leftover paramedic? Panic ensues. But Megan knows that if she's going to win the game, she has to learn to think like the players. Soon Megan shows that sometimes it's the underdog who ends up on top in the end.
Megan was absolutely hysterical! She was crazy awkward, unabashedly honest, and genuine to a fault. She wasn't about to change herself to make the show better. Instead, she found her inner strength and let it shine. I loved seeing her character grow as she discovered herself during each challenge on the show. I related to her quirkiness, and I think we've all had those encounters with guys where you just want to die on the spot. Megan had plenty of those. Cane was a sweetheart, if a bit lacking in self confidence. I tend to like my heroes more self-assured, but his kindness towards Megan and his willingness to help others was endearing. He was the perfect match for Megan.
This was my first book by Brooke Williams, but it most certainly will not be my last! Highly enjoyable, great for a summer beach read, and I can't wait to read her next book.
**I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.**
A virginal, shy, geeky, young woman falls for a broken-hearted medic on a TV reality show. This comedy romance is peppered with characters that are probably common to this televisual form of torture sold as entertainment. I don’t watch it; it’s not ‘real’ in any proper sense of the word, and generally brings out the worst in most of the competitors, if comments about such shows are true. In The Leftover, however, we’re introduced to two main protagonists who are, in their different ways, not the usual players. Megan is the unwilling competitor substitute for her sister and Cane is recovering from his own appearance on a similar show where the ‘dream couple’ didn’t materialise. He isn’t a participant but the on-sight medic dealing with accidents and illness. This is described as comedy. As we all know, humour’s a very personal experience. I laugh fairly easily but this one didn’t do it for me. The story takes a while to get going and I had difficulty accepting Megan as the chronically retiring and self-deprecating young woman she is depicted as. Initially, I thought she must be in her late teens at most, and was surprised to discover she’s close to thirty. In fact, for me, the book, with its slightly puritanical attitude to sex, reads more as YA than adult fiction. Cane, I found more credible as the rejected lover, trying to recover from a public humiliation, whilst maintaining a professional stance with the show’s competitors. The story moves at a better pace once the show begins and we’re introduced to the other characters. Tensions build as various deals are made and the charlatans use their tricks to gain points. Relationships form and friendships are forged in the short period of intense competition. The story is really a late coming of age tale with Megan developing as events unfold. There are the usual barriers to romance; some self-made and others resulting from the antics of various people. The denouement builds to a satisfying and credible climax and truth wins out, with Megan discovering she’s an adult, not a child. Whether romance is also a winner you’ll have to discover for yourself.
Molly is due to compete in a local reality TV show called The Leftover, but when she discovers she's pregnant, she has to pull out and persuades her shy sister, Megan, to participate in her place. Megan is a reluctant competitor, but will do anything for her sister, so she pushes her fears to the side and takes the plunge. She expects not to make it past the first round of eliminations, but Megan has more skill and determination than even she believes. Can she make it to the end, to become the Leftover? And what will she find along the way?
The Leftover is a slightly unconventional romance novel, in that the reality TV setting and Megan's personal journey take precedence over the romantic aspects. The story is, simply, delightful. The TV challenge aspect is well thought-out and not overdone, while the romance is sweet and enjoyable. The characters are a mixed bag of likeable heroes and hateable villains, and all of them are quite realistic. They each have the unique personality traits you'd expect to see on a survival TV show, and it is easy to form quick bonds with (most of) them.
Megan herself is a great lead character. She is shy and insecure but not wimpy or annoying, and entirely believable. She has a determination to do well and make herself proud, that shows real character growth and makes her completely likeable. Cane, Megan's romantic interest, is also a likeable and somewhat realistic character. Although he's gorgeous and she's, well, average, their attraction to each other is explained in understandable terms which stop it becoming farfetched and entirely unlikely. Despite not being the most beautiful girl in the world, Megan is spunky, witty and intelligent, making her undeniably attractive, and a true heroine.
Chick-lit romances can be frothy and superficial at the best of times, but The Leftover has some real depth and a genuinely enjoyable story. The on-off nature of Megan and Cane's relationship did start to get tedious towards the end, but with the overarching focus being on Megan's position in the competition, this was easy to overlook.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
In this book “The Leftover” is a “Survivor”-like TV show that pits twelve people against each other to become the last person left over. Megan Malone becomes a reluctant participant when her sister, Molly, is accepted but then bumped from the show due to being pregnant. Molly talks Megan into taking her place, even though Megan is a thirty-year-old recluse — never been kissed! — with few social or athletic skills. If she’s lucky, she’ll be voted off the show on the first day.
Meek, clumsy Megan, whose severe astigmatism requires her to wear her glasses even when swimming underwater, immediately falls head over heels for Cane, the show’s handsome medic, who is a former reality star in his own right, albeit a humiliated one. He fell hard for the girl on a dating show, but she chose someone else instead of him. Cane, still devastated and heartbroken, is nevertheless instantly drawn to Megan’s refreshing uniqueness as a shy girl who doesn’t wear makeup or comb her hair and has no fashion sense whatsoever.
This is billed as humor, but it’s not particularly humorous, unless being awkward is considered funny. Once on the set of “The Leftover,” Megan has to boil her drinking water, find her own food, and is sleeping on the ground in a lean-to amid a group of strangers who don’t exactly have her well-being in mind. Even so, she’s more interested in ogling Cane on the sidelines who, of course, is surreptitiously ogling her. When she’s not bumbling her way through tough competitions during the day she’s having heartfelt conversations with Cane in the medical tent, and at one point manages to grab his butt by mistake — leading to more awkward humor.
I did a lot of skimming in this book — mostly over the instant “romance” developing between these two — to find out which contestant was going to be eliminated each day, knowing it wasn’t going to be Megan. Would it be the jerk who bossed everyone around, the snotty woman trying to preserve her perfectly manicured nails, or —please no — the hunky blond male PE teacher with the nice eyes? Predictability and clean romance makes this book perfect for readers seeking a harmless piece of fluff.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
A young woman's reluctant journey into the world of reality television may just lead her to a mission of self discovery and possibly love in author Brooke Williams novel The Leftover. Here is the synopsis:
Megan Malone is the ultimate homebody. When her sister talks her into going on The Leftover, a local version of the TV show Survivor, she isn’t sure she’ll make it past the first vote. Cane Trevino is nursing a broken heart by joining the show as a medic. With time away from his regular job and a dozen contestants to distract him, he hopes he can finally get over the woman he thought was “the one.”
This book was incredibly well written. A testament to both the author and her handle of the new adult/romance genres, the book does a great job of showing two people with self-confidence issues finding one another in the most unlikely of places. I heavily identified with the protagonist, Megan Malone. Her life as an introvert who works from home spoke to me greatly, as I personally suffer from social anxiety and have had trouble speaking to people in general, and so her journey to finding her voice and confidence is something I found myself clinging to throughout this novel.
The novel itself was a quick read. The only critique I had personally was just a matter of eBook formatting, but as my copy was a media copy I believe the formatting may have been fixed before publIshing to the public. The author did a masterful job of creating relatable characters and integrating the modern day reality television aspect of the plot in a natural and authentic way.
Overall I loved this book. The imagery and setting of this tale was incredibly vivid and easy to picture in my head, and the whirlwind romance Megan finds herself in is strong enough to keep the reader hooked until the final pages. 'The Leftover' is a scintillating romantic comedy penned by author Brooke Williams.
A young, promising, talented and lonely girl Megan Malone unwillingly accepts the offer of participating in a reality show. She has had high expectations love. Yet, she has no hope of finding the perfect one.
Her social incompetency burdens her. Megan's fear of facing the new world shackles her. Her love for her sister works as an indefatigable impetus. It empowers her to challenge her social awkwardness, her physical limitations- to bloom as a more confident person.
Cane Trevino is irresistible! Every girl swoons over him. Every guy is awed by his personality, kindness, and charm. Cane hides a deep hurt! He has withdrawn from the world. Albeit, the world beckons him. Does he have the strength to break free from the pain?
'The Leftover' delivers realistic characters, original situations and a love story throbbing with happy possibilities. The other people in the novel add zing, fire, hatred, laughter, and adventure!
The storyline is compact, engrossing and believable. The novel underlines basic values that bring out the integrity of humanity. The happy-go-lucky novel, ‘The Leftover’ was seriously a fun read! 'The Leftover' is unputdownable. I read it in 36 hours- straight.
Volunteering to review ‘The Leftover’ by Brooke Williams was an absolute pleasure. The novel has given me the courage to believe that love lasts as do friendships. 'The Leftover' reiterates the conviction that goodness exists irrespective of nefarious intentions and callous people infesting our environment.
My rating for ‘The Leftover’ by Brooke Williams is the perfect score of 5 stars! I guess it will be nice to alternatively rate ‘The Leftover’ with 5 hearts- ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
This is the first book by Brooke Williams that I have read and I was extremely impressed. This was a wonderful book. A romantic tale that has not been told before. If any of her other books are like this book then I am going to be a new fan for life.
In this book Megan is a self-employed voice over artist. She works from home and is reclusive. She is not social and she doesn't communicate with people face to face. When she gets talked into taking her sister Molly's place in a local tv show called "The Leftover" she starts to panick. This show is a mild form of the show "Survivor" Megan worries she will not get past round one, but she is loyal to her sister and will try her best.
A paramedic named Cane was dumped on the live tv show Accept This Dandelion. Heartbroken, he throws his self into work, pushing his friends away. He decides to accept a position as the medic for The Leftover. He will be on site to take care of the contestants if they are injured during the show. He meets Megan and she is cute and shy. She may just be what he needs to mend his broken heart.
This is such an adorable adaption of romance. It is like that movie "Never Been Kissed" with Drew Berrymore. Megan reminds me of Drew's character. Megan has never been kissed or had a boyfriend. She is so shy and scared. In this book she really grows and blossoms into a flower. Gaining confidence and developing friendships, something she was never able to do before. It is wonderful reading her story as she grew into herself. She is truly inspiring. This is a wonderful read, full of life lessons. Not only were the characters developed, the story was well plotted out. The story flowed smoothly and was not rushed. It was a new take on romance from a different angle. This could really be a Hallmark movie or Rom-Con. I highly suggest this book to all you Hallmark romantics out there. You won't regret it.
The story The Leftover by Brooke Williams is a contemporary romance book. This is a story about two people who meet because of a local reality show. One is a contestant, the other is the medic that is there to watch out for everyone’s health and respond to any medical emergencies. Megan and Cane never expected how easy it is for them to talk to one another. In the midst of a game that will test the limits of the contestants will these two find themselves falling for one another? This author has written a story that is very detailed oriented in regards to the reality show and when reading I found myself getting caught up in all the challenges that the participants had to go through as well as all the drama that came with it. It is also the story of Megan and Cane. Megan’s character is the one that shows the most growth in this book. She goes from a shy, soft-spoken girl to someone that exhibits confidence in herself. She is making friends and learning how to keep herself in the game. She is a character that I could really identify with. Cane is trying to get past the heartbreak of rejection. He finds that he is able to easily talk to Megan and takes the time to encourage her. They quickly become friends. Will he find that his feelings for Megan go far beyond friendship? There are many other secondary characters that make up the contestants in the reality show that are entertaining to read about. Megan soon finds the ones that she can call friends and the ones that she needs to watch out for. This is a very entertaining book that had me turning pages to not only find out if Megan and Cane get a happy ending but to see who would be the winner of “The Leftover.” This is the first book I have read by the author and enjoyed so much that I can’t wait to read what she writes next.
Megan is the exact opposite of her beautiful outgoing sister Molly, so when Molly asks Megan to compete in the Nebraska version of Survivor, Megan is sure she'll fail. Overwhelmingly shy around strangers, Megan is happiest working alone at home for her voice over and recording business. Building a shelter, competing in challenges, and playing the social game are completely out of her comfort zone.
When Megan arrives, she meets the show's medic, Cane. She instantly forms a crush on him, which deepens as they get to know each other over the duration of the show. But Cane is nursing a broken heart, and Megan has no experience with relationships. Can these two underdogs survive the show and find love?
This book hit all the right notes for me! I'm a Survivor fan who works from home, is anxious around people, blind without glasses, and have a gorgeous outgoing sister, and I found Megan so relatable. She's incredibly likable. She's a real person with real limitations, and she's hard on herself because of them. I loved watching her grow in confidence and her transformation felt real. Her romance with Cane was so sweet. I prefer books with multiple points of view and getting to read Cane's thoughts on Megan's performance was great. There were so many laugh out loud moments in this book, and I spent most of it with a smile on my face.
The actual reality show side of the book was perfect. The author pegged the game of Survivor perfectly, the cliques, the challenges, the starvation, the scrambling, and the villain. Ohhhh... the villain. She created a nasty one here. I loved the descriptions of the challenges, and got butterflies in my stomach along with Megan as she had to compete in each one. The whole read was a blast!
I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.
The Leftover by Brooke Williams is a story that will make you laugh until the end. This story is about two people, one a contestant and the other a medic. Megan is the contestant who may just find more then just herself in this TV reality show. Cane is the medic who is trying to heal from a broken heart. Will he let his heart heal? Will she have the confidence to let herself just live? This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed it until the end. Her characters are creative and connectable. They are true to life and they have a way of just popping of the pages and into your world. This story is engaging and will keep you reading until the last word. They will take you on a roller coaster ride of various emotions that you don't want to miss.
Megan and Cane's characters are both strong and lacking self confidence. It was great seeing both of these characters grow throughout the story. Megan is quiet, shy and is not use to being around people. When she is just thrown into this TV show, she is not happy but she has a determination to win. Will she come out on top? Cane is handsome and attractive. He is just broken from his experience with rejection. Normally you see the female in the story that is broken, it was nice to see the male be heart broken and struggle to regain his life. These two felt an attraction from the time they first meet. Throughout the story their relationship builds and might just find love in the process. Will they trade friendship in for love? Will Megan find herself in each event she participates in? I highly recommend reading this book as I know you will want to see new twist on TV reality stories. I know that I will be reading more from this author and I think you will feel the same by the end of this book!
I am personally a huge reality television fan! I watch a lot of shows on all those random channels, so when I got asked to review this book, and read the blurb, I was all in! It didn't hurt that the main character and I share the same first name!
Molly is this outgoing, social butterfly, and her local tv station set up a show similar to Survivor, so she signs up, and then gets rejected due to her being with child. So she arranges a replacement... her sister. Megan Malone is a lot like I am - kinda nerdy, kinda introverted. Megan develops feelings, a crush if you will, on Cane Trevino. He's on set as the medic, and while he doesn't seem to feel the same way... her feelings stay strong throughout.
Megan is very unsure of herself, not the typical candidate for a game show. She's not very confident in her abilities. She grows so much during this book, and that's my favorite part about a new adult novel. I loved seeing the development of these characters, as well as the dynamics of a tv show also.
I liked this book so much because it was just different. It steps out of the bounds of a normal contemporary romance, and the author wasn't afraid to let her characters be flawed, and vulnerable. Megan is goofy, and clumsy, and endearing. It was nice to read about a character that reminds of the women in my life, reminds me of my friends. I feel like the author did a great job writing this novel - she keeps things very clear, concise, and relevant. The voices of these characters come to life, and I enjoyed getting to know them. The story is very clean, and just made me happy at the end. I couldn't help but smile throughout, as I loved seeing the interactions between Megan and Cane the most. They are just so awkward!
The Leftover by Brooke Williams was a heartwarming story of two characters stepping outside of their respective comfort zones and pushing themselves to be limit.
Megan Malone loves spending her time on her own. Shy and introverted she struggles to talk to new people she meets. As a result she has no friends and, at nearly 30 years old, has never been kissed. But she is happy with how's things are and isn't looking to change a thing. Until her sister tells her she is pregnant and needs her to take her place on a reality survival show. Determined not to let her sister down, Megan reluctantly agrees to take her place.
Cane Trevino is still nursing his broken heart. And who wouldn't be after getting dumped on national television? After his experience Cane has decided that he is happier alone doing the work he loves. And then he meets Megan. He is drawn to how shy and nervous she appears at first but finds himself intrigued by the person underneath. But with the show to contend with the last thing Cane needs is to fall for another woman who has the potential to break him even more than he already is.
With a long couple of weeks filming though Megan and Cane find themselves leaning on each other for support. Their feelings grow and the chemistry bubbles. But with cameras trained on them at all hours is this something they can put their faith into?
I found this book to be an amusing read and I found myself backing the characters and their relationship. The shyness of Megan is something I have at times been able to relate to so getting to her come out of her shell was a great thing to see. A great read, one I would recommend.
Megan isn't your typical heroine no she avoids being social is shy and a complete geek but her sister molly on the other hand is completely opposite. Molly absolutely loves the survivor show and when a local show looking for contestants molly is all over it but due to pregnancy she's rejected so guess what she finds a replacement no other than her shy sister Megan. Megan is completely out of her comfort zone doing this show but she would do absolutely anything for her sister. Cane has recently had his heart ripped out by the women he thought was his one but no she ended up being someone elses one. He hopes with his job being a medic on the new local TV show will keep his mind off the heartbreak and the women who was his life. Megan wouldn't normally cut it for a TV show like survivor she's too shy, too into her shell and doesn't want to break out and live no she would rather stay hidden away with no social life, unfortunately she's also not confident and doesn't believe in herself or her abilities. What I absolutely loved about this novel was seeing Megan grow opening up overcoming her fears it's incredible to watch the transformation and it was also something alot of readers could relate to which made even more of a great read it showed if you put your mind to it you can overcome these issues positive thinking all the way! I would absolutely recommend this novel its a easy read and highly enjoyable!
Megan is a shy geeky girl who is socially awkward. She lacks self confidence but is a very smart person. Never really making friends before, she finds herself in a very precarious position when she lands on a tv show as her sisters replacement. How will she get along?
Cane is a sexy EMT and has a once bitten twice shy attitude when it comes to affairs of the heart. He has had his heart broken as a contestant on a t v show before and now he is unsure of his ability to trust his love instincts . How will he get along? My favorite quotes from the story: Megan "I just needed to give you something." "Please just take it and I'll explain later."
Cane "I don't know what's going on here, Megan, but you started it."
This was an easy fun read about two people coming out of their shells and learning to trust in themselves and others. The characters have a good depth to them and the setting is very involved. the writer puts you right in the middle of the t v show! As the story unfolds and the game itself begins it steals the show so to speak.I enjoyed reading this story but I would have liked a little more character advancement with Cole and Megan and a little less game. I also wanted more closure at the end of the story. I give this book 4 stars because the author kept my interest and it was well written.
Fans of the show Survivor and not super sappy romance novels will love this story by Brooke Williams. Personally I am a huge fan of survival shows and books and this story completely surpassed my expectations. Megan was a great character that I could identify with more than any other character I have read about in a long time. Cane is the kind of guy that I really go for but who can resist a handsome medic who is looking for someone to complete him in the same way he wants to complete them? Neither one really need to be saved but they both have a habit of standing in the way of their own happiness. I know from experience how hard it is to break out of that cycle and I really appreciate how Brooke Williams shows that gentle prodding from someone close to you is the best way to help those who are introverted to find hidden strengths and build up self-confidence. This story also has a nice subplot about brains versus brawn and how each can be helpful and harmful in a Survivor style reality show. Even though I’m pretty sure this is just a one shot book, I would be happy to read more about these characters, especially Molly. We get so little of her and she seems like any book with her at the focus would be hilarious, sassy, and a good showcase for strong women. I also need to know what she’s going to name her baby!!
I absolutely loved this story! It was such a brilliant read. Whilst I’m not a huge fan of reality TV I do enjoy it when books are based on them – I think it makes them more relatable. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I definitely can’t wait to read more from her. I was completely hooked on this book from the very first page. I really liked Megan; I thought that she was a genuine, down to earth person. She didn’t really want to take part in this TV show but did so because of how much her sister means to her. I loved their close relationship. I really do think the author did a great job with the secondary characters in this story; they were all different and added something to the storyline. Cane was just so yummy and was such a lovely person. It was nice to read about a male character that is quite insecure about things. It made me like him even more. I loved him and Megan together; I think they suited each other perfectly. They were both so unsure of themselves that they helped build each other up and more importantly than anything really struck up a great friendship. I thought that this was a great standalone read and one that I would happily go back and read again! The story flowed really well, the characters were well thought out and the pace was great.
