This is an infinitely dark crime thriller set in Brighton in the fascinating world of tattoo artists, with a macabre serial killer that takes pleasure in removing tattoos by flaying alive the murder victims. The youngest DI Francis Sullivan faces hostility from his second in command, the older, more experienced DS Rory Mackay, who thinks he should have been the one promoted and from his boss, DCI Martin Bradshaw, disinclined to trust Sullivan's judgement, whilst insisting on courses of action that do nothing to advance the investigation. Experienced tattooist, Marnie Mullins, is not doing well in distancing herself from her ex-husband, Thierry, and has a traumatic past history that has left her distrusting the police. She is providing clients with intricate tattoos at the Brighton Tattoo Conference, when she slips out to get a cup of coffee. To her horror, she discovers a dead body in a refuse bin, and phones the police to let them know anonymously.

So begins DI Sullivan's first murder case where leads prove to be elusive, and he faces intense pressure within the police team watching him, waiting for him to fail and the unhelpful micromanaging tendencies of his boss. Sullivan is a bright guy who tracks down Marnie, a woman ambivalent about helping the police but unwavering in her commitment to help her community, being targeted by a serial killer. The serial killer's perspective and motivation is interspersed in the narrative, along with a clearly troubled family history. We are given a picture of a killer who finds it hard to control their blood lust and sees their work as a form of art. Sullivan needs Marnie to understand the world of tattooists and the two find themselves working together informally as more murders occur. Sullivan finds that there some orders from his boss that he cannot in all conscience obey if he wants to protect the public but irrespective of all the obstacles he faces, he will not stop trying to nail the killer. This brings danger to him and Marnie, as the determined pair get closer to the killer.

Alison Belsham's debut novel is a promising beginning to her career, she writes a bleak, disturbing, gripping and gory tale of a unhinged serial killer roaming Brighton, spreading fear in the community. I particularly enjoyed the insights into the alternative world of tattooists and the prejudices that those who have tattoos can encounter. Sullivan, a committed Catholic, cannot see why anyone sane should disfigure their body by having one until he has his eyes opened by Marnie. If you like your crime thrillers dark, brutal, unsettling, with plenty of blood and gore, then this is a read for you. Many thanks to Orion for an ARC.

2 ήθελα να βάλω.
Το μισό το παίρνει για την πολύ καλη μετάφραση του Κορτω και γιατί ειναι το πρωτο της βιβλιο άρα μπορουμε να συγχωρεσουμε- παραβλεψουμε- δώσουμε ελαφρυντικα για καποια μικρά ατοπήματα. Μικρα ομως. Γιατί εδω απο την αρχη του βιβλίου αναρωτιομουν αν αυτά που διαβαζω είναι όντως γραμμένα μεσα ή αν κάνουν πουλακια τα μάτια μου.

Ο Φρανσις Σαλιβαν είναι αστυνομικος (ο θεος να τον κανει) στην πρώτη του υποθέση. Και τώρα που είπα θεος να σας πω οτι είναι της εκκλησίας το αγόρι τουτο. Χτυπάνε τα τηλέφωνα γιατί βρεθηκε πτωμα και αυτός είναι στη λειτουργία και λέει νταξ, θα απαντήσω μετά. Και χωνει το τηλεφωνο στην τσέπη. Δεν αρχίσαμε καλα μαλλον.
Στην πορεία φυσικά τα σκατωνει ελαφρως λογω απειρίας και λογω υπέρπροσπαθειας να φανεί ικανος. Έχει και κάτι συναδελφους τζιμανια που ωρες ωρες μονολογουσα: (αν βρείτε σεις δολοφονο να με φτυσετε)
Η Μαρνι Μαλινς απο την αλλη είναι αυτη που βρήκε το πρώτο θυμα του κλεφτη των τατουαζ.
Είναι μια γυναίκα με ουκ ολιγα κολληματα. Συμπεριφερεται ανώριμα, αρνείται να συνεργαστεί με την αστυνομία , λειτουργεί εν βρασμω ψυχης, φυσιολογικη δε την λες σε καμία περίπτωση. Μεσα σε όλο αυτό ξεφυτρώνουν διαφοροι ηρωες με ζαβες συμπεριφορες που το μονο που ήθελα ήταν να τους χαστουκισω.
Εκεί γυρω στην 280 σελίδα σαν να κουνηθηκαν λιγο τα πράγματα. Σαν να άναψαν λιγο τα αίματα και άρχισε να έχει ενα κάποιο ενδιαφέρον. Και προς το τέλος πια απο μια χαζομάρα της κυρας απο πανω παίχτηκαν σκηνές CSI Miami. Έγιναν ολα τόσο γρήγορα σαν να εβλεπα ταινία. Η γραφή κοφτή, γρήγορη, ασθματική. Η συγγραφέας γκαζωσε σαν να την κυνηγουσαν δαιμόνια. Οχι απαραίτητα κακο αυτό, αλλα ηταν σαν να διαβαζα κεφάλαια ενος διαφορετικού βιβλίου, γραμμενο απο άλλον ανθρωπο.
Σαν κεντρική ιδέα ειχε ενδιαφέρον. Ο λόγος για τον οποίο έγιναν οι φονοι ηταν για να χτυπάς το κεφάλι σου στον τοιχο αλλα δε βαριέσαι... Έχουμε διαβάσει και χειροτερα.

Ήταν ένα βιβλίο που μου δημιούργησε ουδέτερα συναισθήματα. Δεν μπορώ να πω ότι με προσέλκυσε, αλλά ούτε ότι με απώθησε.

Θετικά στοιχεία
-Η συγγραφέας δημιούργησε συμπαθητικούς χαρακτήρες.

Αρνητικά στοιχεία
-Νομίζω πως η πλοκή δεν περιπλέχθηκε καθόλου.
-Η περιγραφή των τελευταίων σκηνών με τον «Συλλέκτη» μου προκάλεσε σύγχυση, με αποτέλεσμα να μη μπορώ ν’ ακολουθήσω την κινηματογραφική της αφήγηση.
-Όταν ένας συγγραφέας σε προετοιμάζει για την αποκάλυψη του δολοφόνου, ο οποίος εν τέλει είναι ένας άγνωστος για τον αναγνώστη είναι απογοητευτικό. Η αποκάλυψη του δεύτερου σημαντικού προσώπου του βιβλίου, το οποίο δεν το φαντάζεσαι αλλά κι ύστερα από την αποκάλυψη δεν σε εκπλήσσει, είναι επίσης ανεπαρκής για τη «δίψα» του αναγνώστη.
- Υπάρχουν αστοχίες, όπως η έφοδος του αστυνομικού σε επικίνδυνη σκηνή χωρίς όπλο, η αναφορά της πρωταγωνίστριας πως άνοιξε μόνη της το μαγαζί ύστερα απο τον χωρισμό της με τον άντρα της και λίγα κεφάλαια πιο κάτω ο άντρας της αναφέρει ότι το άνοιξαν μαζι, η ενοικίαση ενός αυτοκινήτου απο τον "κακό" με το οποίο θα προέβαινε σε απαγωγή αλλά ο αφελής δήλωσε τη πραγματική του διεύθυνση κι οι αστυνομικοί κατάφεραν να τον βρουν.

Στο Μπράιτον της Αγγλίας, η Μάρνι κάνει σε κάποιον τατουάζ όταν ανακαλύπτει ένα πτώμα μέσα σε έναν κάδο. Την υπόθεση αναλαμβάνει ο Φράνσις Σάλιβαν, ένας νεαρός ντετέκτιβ που μόλις έχει πάρει προαγωγή και έχει πολλά να αποδείξει. Όταν φανεί ότι ο δολοφόνος σκοτώνει κατά συρροή άτομα με τατουάζ για να τους τα αφαιρέσει, η Μάρνι θα αναγκαστεί να μπλεχτεί στην ιστορία για να βοηθήσει την αστυνομία με τις γνώσεις και τις διασυνδέσεις της.

Με το πρώτο της βιβλίο η Alison Belsham μπαίνει δυναμικά στο χώρο του αστυνομικού θρίλερ. Βρήκα το θέμα αρκετά πρωτότυπο (το κοντινότερο που είχα διαβάσει με τατουάζ ήταν… το κορίτσι με το τατουάζ), σε μυεί στον χώρο αυτής της τέχνης και μάλιστα θίγει το πρόβλημα του tattoo shaming. Η αφήγηση είναι αγωνιώδης και η γραφή πολύ απολαυστική, κατά τα πρότυπα του σύγχρονου αγγλικού crime fiction που αγαπώ.

Ο χαρακτήρας της πρωταγωνίστριας Μάρνι είναι και ο πιο σύνθετος. Διαζευγμένη από τον, επίσης τατουατζή, Τιερί, με τον οποίο η σχέση είναι ακόμη περίπλοκη, μητέρα ενός δεκαοκτάχρονου, διαβητική, πρώην μαθητευόμενη Ιάπωνα σενσέι (!) με τραυματικό παρελθόν που μας αποκαλύπτεται σταδιακά κατά τη διάρκεια του βιβλίου.

Ο Φράνσις, από την άλλη, είναι ένα μυστήριο καθώς πρόκειται για άνθρωπο αφοσιωμένο στη δουλειά του. Μαθαίνουμε λίγα για τη ζωή του, κυρίως για τη μητέρα και την αδερφή του, την οποία συναντάμε μόλις μια φορά. Παρόλο που προσπαθεί να είναι δυναμικός και αποφασιστικός, η απειρία του και η αδεξιότητά του είναι εμφανείς σε αρκετά σημεία της υπόθεσης, η οποία δεν θα είχε προχωρήσει αν δεν είχε συμβάλει σημαντικά η Μάρνι και αν ο δολοφόνος δεν ήταν απρόσεκτος. Η σχέση της Μάρνι και του Φράνσις ήταν ένα από τα αγαπημένα μου στοιχεία του μυθιστορήματος και ανυπομονώ να αναπτυχθεί ακόμη περισσότερο στη συνέχεια.

Όσον αφορά την υπόθεση, εδώ φαίνεται ότι πρόκειται για το ντεμπούτο της συγγραφέα. Είχα υποψιαστεί από πολύ νωρίς ποιος είναι ο ανταγωνιστής του βιβλίου και είμαι άτομο που συνήθως δεν ψάχνει να τον εντοπίσει. Κάποιος που έχει διαβάσει αρκετά αστυνομικά μυθιστορήματα θα προσέξει μερικά κλισέ εδώ κι εκεί. Το ασυγχώρητο, για μένα, όμως, είναι ο προϊστάμενος του Φράνσις και του Ρόρι που ενώ θέλει φυσικά να λυθεί άμεσα η υπόθεση, καταβάλλει κάθε πιθανή προσπάθεια να παρεμποδίσει τις έρευνες. Στο σύνολό του, πάντως, είναι ένα αρκετά αξιοπρεπές βιβλίο. Τώρα που είναι και καλοκαίρι, αν αναζητείτε κάτι με γρήγορους ρυθμούς, δράση και ανατροπές, δεν θα απογοητευτείτε.

This book will not be for everyone... it is dark, disturbing and graphic. If you can cope with that you will love this book! Lately there have been a lot of books with such similar stories that it has been hard to tell them apart. This one was absolutely an original story, and one that had me hooked.

Marni Mullians is a tattoo expert, she knows her ink as a tattoo artist in Brighton. When she makes the horrifying discovery in the rubbish near her studio of a man who has had his tattoos removed, she becomes the leading expert for the police investigating the murder. DI Francis Sullivan is newly promoted and has to prove himself to his superiors. This is his first murder case. Then a second body is found and they have serial killer on their hands.. a killer who is collecting tattoos from his victims while they are still alive.

Το συγγραφικό ντεμπούτο της Alison Belsham μου είχε κινήσει το ενδιαφέρον απ’ όταν κυκλοφόρησε λόγω της πρωτότυπης υπόθεσης. Η Μάρνι Μάλινς-καλλιτέχνιδα τατουάζ- ανακαλύπτει ένα παραμορφωμένο πτώμα. Ο νεαρός ντετέκτιβ Φράνσις Σάλιβαν θα χρειαστεί τη βοήθειά της ώστε να εντοπίσει τον δολοφόνο που αφαιρεί τα τατουάζ από το σώμα των θυμάτων του όσο είναι ακόμη ζωντανοί. Όμως η Μάρνι δεν είναι συνεργάσιμη αφού κουβαλάει το δικό της ένοχο μυστικό. Στον τομέα του μυστηρίου εμπιστεύομαι πάντα τον Jo Nesbo αλλά μπορώ να πω ότι και γυναίκες συγγραφείς έχουν χάρισμα όπως η Chevy Stevens (‘’Εξαφάνιση’’). Mε την Camilla Läckberg ακόμη δεν έχω συστηθεί και επιβάλλεται! To πρώτο βιβλίο της Belsham σηματοδοτεί την άφιξη μίας νέας γυναικείας φωνής στον χώρο του crime.

he Tattoo Thief flicks between four characters. Marni a tattooist, Francis a DI, Rory, who works under Francis and the killer. The killer even though we get to meet them and see inside their dark and twisted mind, we don't actually know who it is. Obviously I was trying to guess who but failed miserably.

Marni is quite a strong character and I have to say I loved finding out more about tattoo's and what a normal working day is like for a tattooist. It really makes for some fascinating reading. Marni has a lot going on in her life without being caught up in a murder case but it made her so much more interesting and I really liked her.

Francis I loved. Such a great character and I really hope there is going to be more books featuring him. I liked how he really invested himself in this case even though higher up think they know better. He comes across as determined and caring and he would certainly someone I would be happy to have working on a case.

The Tattoo Thief is such an original story line that makes for a page turner of a read. It's a very dark read that will have you on the edge of your seat as they close in on the killer. There was so many heart in mouth moments that horrified yet thrilled me and I couldn't get enough. It was such a great climax also and didn't disappoint. Certainly look forward to reading more by the author.

The Tattoo Thief was a bit of a disappointment.
The premise is awesome. Tattoos and serial killers? Sign me the f up.
However, I couldn't help but change my mind when I was halfway thorugh it.
You can tell the author did her research and knew where she wanted this story to go, but apparently got a bit lost in the making because 1) it takes really tooooo much for the story to start and 2) there are plot holes and unsolved questions that will haunt me forever.
I found this book a little too inconclusive, rushed in some points (like the ending????), while being dragged in others. Too bad, because I totally saw myself loving the shit out of it.

After reading glowing reviews for the third book in this series – The Embalmer – and finding it in the ‘read now’ section of Goodreads, I decided the buy the first two books. Most reviewers said that it would be better to read the books in order.
So here we are – with a story that actually starts with a whole new beginning for one of the main characters, DI Francis Sullivan, and a not-so-new beginning for Marni Mullins. Francis has the disadvantage that his boss Martin Bradshaw hates him, and Marni has the disadvantage she just cannot let go of her ex-husband Thierry. Even after twelve years apart, she’s still using his last name and taking care of their son Alex. Marni is a somewhat famous tattoo artist and one of the nice things in this book is that you learn (if you didn’t know already) that there are tattoos and there are tattoos. Some people have no eye for style at all and they want to have a picture here and a picture there, with no cohesion between them. Other people really think about what they want and they come to Marni for a real piece of art, to be tattooed somewhere on there body.
The story is set in Brighton and the hustle and bustle of this busy seaside town, especially in summer, lends some extra character to the action. And action there is! It is not every day we read about dead people being flayed – especially not when it turns out that they were actually flayed while still alive.
We read through the eyes of different people, which gives a good insight in their character and actions without the author having to explain too much. Both Francis and Marni are interesting as in that they sometimes ‘do not fit’ but don’t want to give in to the demands of other people that they ‘behave normal’. After all, who decides what is normal? This is something the killer thinks about too, although of course, the killers’ actions are ‘not normal’ in anyone’s eyes.
I liked the book for the setting, the plot and the well-drawn character and I’m looking forward to the other books in this series.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A well paced whodunnit with great characterisation - though sometimes a bit far-fetched.

Marni's tattooing a guy called Steve in her hometown in Brighton, when she discovers a body in the bins outside. She phones it into the police, only to find herself hauled into the centre of a twisted serial killing spree. As if the poor love hasn't got enough on her plate with her problematic ex-husband still in the neighbourhood.

Turns out that this murderer has a taste for collecting tattoos, and whats more, they only want the finest that's out there. Francis, a religious copper who's recently been promoted, is on the case -but only if his boss will let him get on with the task at hand. However, he didn't count on meeting a lady like Marni...

Overall, I liked the book and read it very quickly (over the course of a couple of nights). I was invested in the characters (particularly brittle Marni, who was a definite treat to read) and wanted to find out what happened. The ending was fairly satisfying, with a couple of twists that weren't immediately obvious, and it was enough to keep me satisfied.

I think the author definitely excels at characterisation - with some of her characters, you really get a sense that she's dug deep to pull out their authenticity and vulnerability. However, I was slightly disappointed to see some very over-used genre cliches in this book; not least the golf-playing police chief who obstructs the 'good cop's' efforts - that was a trope I could well have done without.

There were also a few moments that felt a bit unconvincing. For example, if you'd just been brutally attacked by a serial killer and they'd tried to flay you alive, would you check yourself out of hospital without anyone knowing, then return the the scene of the crime in the middle of the night?

Also, what happened to Marni's dog?! I needed to know, I was worried!

However, this sort of thing is quite common in books like this. It's such a popular, over-populated genre that there's bound to be some crossover and it must be hard to get total originality. As such, I'm giving it a four out of five stars as it was really compelling to read.

The Tattoo Thief is a pacy and addictive thriller that I read all in one go - it is dark and quite brutal with an excellent twisty plot and some intriguing characters.
I liked Marni, tattoo artist, who gets caught up in a serial killer case despite her best efforts to stay out of it and the mystery elements are well plotted to keep things unexpected. It is gripping and often darkly violent, descriptively this is not for the faint of heart.
We get a glimpse into the world of the Tattoo artist, which was fascinating, the author also does a good job of looking at prejudice and politics - often unsettling, The Tattoo Thief is one of those books that can affect your dreams, the imagery staying with you long after finishing it.
I really enjoyed it - an addictive crime thriller for those upcoming cold dark nights.

Well. If you like your crime dark and graphic then this is the book for you.

As to what the book is about, “It does what it says on the tin”. There is a killer selecting people with tattoos and removing them – whilst the person is still alive. Gory enough for you? We’re not talking tiny butterflies here by the way – all those chosen have some amazing body art which someone is obviously desperate to own.

DI Francis Sullivan has been newly promoted at just 29 years of age. His promotion has not gone down well with his colleague DS Rory Mackay who was also hoping to get the post. Tensions between the two simmer with Sullivan’s inexperience being an irritant to Mackay. It doesn’t help that their DCI is a rude ignorant brute of a man who has no time for reasoning or excuses and just wants results. Now.

Set in Brighton, the story is told from 4 perspectives – Francis, Rory, a tattooist called Marni Mullins and an unknown voice, who I took to be the killer.

Marni is a complex character, clearly damaged by past events of which the reader is gradually made aware. Divorced from fellow tattoo artist Thiery Mullins, she is a respected tattoo artist in her own right. She still holds a torch for her ex-husband and even though she resents his interference in her life, she can’t quite let go. It is Marni who discovers the first victim and when Francis approaches her for assistance with his enquiries into the tattooist community, she is conflicted. She wants to help catch the killer but doesn’t want to help the police. There were the inevitable eye rolls from me whenever she went off-piste and ignored advice. How many times do bad things happen when they do that? Some people never learn!

The Tattoo Thief is rather more graphic than the crime thrillers I would normally choose but I really enjoyed this. I can be a bit of a wuss where mutilation of bodies are concerned and there were times when I winced and had to look away at a particularly gruesome description but the story raced along at a pace and kept my interest all the way through. The voice of the killer, is particularly chilling, as are the references to ‘The Collector’.

I particularly liked the interaction between Marni and Francis – partly because they were so very different in personality. Francis was very religious, a regular church goer with family issues of his own. His inexperience in dealing with suspects and witnesses meant for some clumsy interviewing which did get people’s backs up – including Marni’s. However for all her antipathy towards the police there was a connection between the two which I suspect might be explored further.

I did feel quite sorry for Francis. His lack of experience made him a marked man in some quarters and some people had no hesitation in throwing him under a bus if it suited them. However he had a stubborn nature and wouldn’t go away quietly. He wants to prove himself by solving the case any way he can. In that respect he and Marni were well matched.

The Tattoo Thief was an intriguing and tension filled read from beginning to end. I’m interested to see how the characters of Sullivan and Mullins develop and will definitely be reading more of this series.

Ο Κλέφτης των Τατουάζ,ήταν αυτό που υποσχέθηκε:ένα αστυνομικό θρίλερ,με αρκετά γρήγορη και έξυπνη πλοκή,ειδικά από τη μέση και κάτω.Ωραία γραφή,ταιριαστό λεξιλόγιο,γαλλικά "γαλλικά",και ένα ειδύλλιο που επισφραγίζεται με "πόνο",έδωσαν ρυθμό σε μια, εξαρχής δυνατή, έμπνευση.Στα πολύ λίγα αρνητικά του,η κάπως αργή εξέλιξη στις περίπου 150 πρώτες σελίδες,και η αρκετά αδιάφορη περιγραφή της μουρμούρας των δύο πρωταγωνιστών αστυνομικών και του αρχηγού τους-μου φάνηκε παιδαριώδης σε σχέση με τη�� ένταση της υπόλοιπης ιστορίας.Επίσης,συνειρμοί αναφορικά με άλλο,πασίγνωστο θρίλερ δεν μπόρεσαν να αποφευχθούν,αλλά δεν ήταν και τόσο σημαντικοί τελικά-δεν υπάρχει παρθενογένεση έτσι κι αλλιώς.Ένα πολύ ωραίο πρώτο βιβλίο,4,5⭐

Ένα βιβλίο που ευτυχώς δεν το αγόρασα γιατί θα έκλαιγα τα χρήματα μου...δεν ένιωσα ούτε στιγμή αγωνία, και ενώ στο τέλος θα μπορούσε να σου προσφέρει μια απειροελάχιστη νότα αγωνίας, οι χαρακτήρες είναι τόσο αδιάφοροι που δεν σε ενδιαφέρει αν θα πάθουν κάτι, αν θα ζήσουν ή θα πεθάνουν.

Έχουμε μπάτσους που συμπεριφέρονται σαν αγοράκια στο γυμνάσιο και μετράνε ποιος την έχει μεγαλύτερη...την εμπειρία!

Έχουμε μια τατουατζού τελείως βλαμμένη, και δεν φτάνει μόνο αυτό, είναι και τόσο κολλημένη στο παρελθόν, που σου σπάει τα μέζεα του στεατοπυγικού υποσυστήματος...

Έχουμε τον κύριο πρωταγωνιστή που είναι του κατηχητικού και που υποτίθεται ότι ξεχειλίζει από ευφυΐα (έτσι λέει ο δολοφόνος κάποια στιγμή), αλλά αυτή δεν φαίνεται πουθενά..!

Έχουμε μια υπόθεση, που στις πρώτες 150 σελίδες λειτουργεί σαν βαρύ υπνωτικό, με τους αστυνομικούς να μη ξέρουν τι τους γίνεται, να μη ξέρουν καν για τι πράγμα να ψάξουν, και τελικά η αρχή της λύσης να έρχεται από ένα τυχαίο γεγονός!

Έχουμε τον αστυνομικό επιθεωρητή να κάνει έρευνα μαζί με μια πολίτη...και όχι μόνο την παίρνει μαζί του σε έρευνα, αλλά μετά της δίνει και πλήρη αναφορά [ένα δείγμα: 👉"την ενημέρωσε για τα όσα είχαν βρει στον στάβλο και για τα αποδεικτικά στοιχεία που προέκυπταν από την αγροικία"👈] η οποία φυσικά συνεχίζεται και με άλλες περιγραφές που δεν τις αναφέρω μη κάνω σπόιλερ.

Έχουμε σκηνικά του τύπου, βρίσκουν το κεφάλι ενός από τα θύματα μεσα στον χώρο του δολοφόνου, αλλά ανησυχούν ότι ένα μαχαίρι που βρήκανε δεν θα γίνει δεκτό σαν αποδεικτικό στοιχείο, επειδή επιμολύνθηκε από έναν αστυνομικό...OK, το κεφάλι δεν είναι αρκετό για καταδίκη, είδε φως και μπήκε!

Φυσικά από ένα τέτοιο έπος, δεν θα μπορούσε να λείψει και το ρομάντζο μεταξύ του αστυνομικού και της μάρτυρα (που στην πορεία εξελίχθηκε σε βοηθό του), και, που φυσικά εννοείται ότι θα γινόταν και στόχος του δολοφόνου...

Τέλος να αναφέρω και τα κολλήματα της συγγραφέως (μέσα από τα μάτια της ηρωίδας) ότι οι περισσότεροι άνθρωποι αντιπαθούν αυτούς που έχουν τατουάζ...σε ποια εποχή ζει; 🙄

Βαθμολογία : επειδή δεν το πλήρωσα, δεν το παράτησα και με πετυχαίνει και στις καλές μου...

Ο κακός πάντα προκαλεί χάος, αλλά στο τέλος τον πιάνουν. Ο καλός έχει μπλεξίματα και πάντα κινδυνεύει αλλά στο τέλος είναι εκείνος που ουσιαστικά σώζει την κατάσταση. Αναμενόμενο αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα αλλά με πρωτότυπο θέμα!

WOW – This is one gory and gruesome debut and if you have a strong stomach I am pretty sure you will love this book. The Tattoo Thief is the debut novel from Alison Belsham, published by Trapeze and available to buy now and is the first book in a trilogy.

The gory story is narrated through four main characters. The Killer: a really sick and twisted individual who is killing people around Brighton and removing their skin to collect their tattoos; Marni Mullins: a divorced mother who works in Brighton as a tattoo artist and discovers the first victim; Francis Sullivan: a newly promoted Detective Inspector in charge of investigating these horrific crimes and DS Rory Mackay; a slightly disgruntled policeman who was overlooked for the DI position and now has to report to Francis Sullivan.

I personally thought that this was an original and interesting story. Whilst the murders were really graphic and I found myself grimacing every other page, I was utterly engrossed in the fascinating back stories of Francis and Marni as well as the current plotline around catching this sick serial killer.

Without giving away anything, it was great to read about a policeman who had such strong personal beliefs and was thoroughly determined to solve the crime and Marni Mullins – a brilliant, strong and unwavering female lead character with a dark past.

I will definitely be reading the next book Poison Ink when it’s released in Feb 2019.

Andei que tempos sem ler, pegava num livro lia os primeiros capítulos e depois esquecia-me que o estava ler. Andei assim todo este ano. Finalmente, um livro que me prendeu do início ao fim. Gostei muito das personagens e do enredo. Recomendo!!

Buzz!!! Buzz!!! and the tattoo machine inks another person having given their consent to the tattooist to make their mark. However, there is a thief about who steals tattoos off people, leaving them for dead.

This crime thriller is set around Brighton and in her debut novel, Alison Belsham gives the case to newly promoted DI Francis Sullivan. What is nice about this police procedural, is that there are separate chapters from the point of view of the 4 main characters. DI Francis Sullivan and DS Rory Mackay give their view as the case progresses plus you also get chapters from tattooist Marni Mullins and the bad guy who is stealing the tattoos from the victims.

I enjoyed reading The Tattoo Thief and liked all the bits that Marni told the reader about her job as a tattooist. Most crime thrillers dwell on the job of the police officers and it was very nice to have detail about a very different day job. This gave The Tattoo Thief added value. Characterization of Francis, Rory and Marni was good and I liked the chemistry that built between the 3 of them.

I thought the plot of The Tattoo Thief was okay but found the ending with all it’s racing action disappointing. Getting the location of where the bad guy may be living, chasing there page after page followed by more charging around was rather tiresome and lacked a WOW! factor compared to finding the first victim in the beginning. The final chase for the bad guy did not grab me at all, although the thought of Marni naked did brighten my mood.

I liked The Tattoo Thief and thought the beginning, the structure and the character development and chemistry to be good. For a debut novel Alison Belsham has done very well and I think her book is a GOOD read that gets 4 stars from me.

A sinopse deixou-me muito curiosa pois temos um assassino que retira a pele, com tatuagens, das vítimas.
Marni Mullins é uma tatuadora que está numa convenção de tatuagens e, por acaso, encontra um corpo tatuado, no contentor do lixo e informa a polícia. Francis Sullivan é o mais recente inspector e é-lhe atribuído o seu primeiro caso, o do corpo no contentor.
Este é um thrillier altamente viciante e que me depois agarrada da primeira à última página. Com detalhes dos crimes que me causaram arrepios, o que se veio comprovar a qualidade da história.
Gostei tanto da Marni, achei-a uma personagem bastante real e é, sem dúvida, uma mulher de fibra.
E quando achamos que as coisas estão bem encaminhadas, eis que temos mais uma reviravolta.
Um thriller excelente!

Αίσθηση απ' ότι φαίνεται, έχει προκαλέσει με το συγγραφικό της ντεμπούτο η Άλισον Μπέλσαμ. Κάνει την πρώτη της εμφάνιση με ένα αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα, με στοιχεία θρίλερ. Με το "Ο κλέφτης των τατουάζ", η συγγραφέας μάς εισάγει στον πολύχρωμο και μαγικό κόσμο της δερματοστιξίας και μας γνωρίζει τους ανθρώπους που τον αποτελούν. Η προσωπική μου όμως άποψη για το συγκεκριμένο είναι ότι πρόκειται για το πιο αμφιλεγόμενο βιβλίο που διάβασα μέσα στο 2019. Είχε αρκετά αδύναμα σημεία και κενά, αλλά από την άλλη, ήταν γραμμένο με τέτοιο τρόπο, που δεν μπορούσα να το αφήσω από τα χέρια μου. Δεν ξέρω τελικά τι είναι καλύτερο... ένα καλογραμμένο και μεστό βιβλίο, με ανάγλυφους χαρακτήρες και δυναμική πλοκή ή ένα βιβλίο που τελειώνοντας σε κάνει να πεις "θέλω κι άλλο"; Γιατί με τον "Κλέφτη των τατουάζ", εγώ αυτό έπαθα. Ενώ στραβομουτσούνιασα και χαλάστηκα αρκετές φορές, στο τέλος είπα "έλα ρε, γιατί τέλειωσε;".

Ας τα δούμε όμως αναλυτικά...
Δεν ξέρω πόσοι από εσάς έχετε δει μια γερμανική ταινία του 2002 με τίτλο "Tattoo"... Δεν θα πω ψέματα, το βιβλίο μου θύμισε πολύ αυτό το φιλμ. Όπως και στον "Κλέφτη" έτσι και στην ταινία, υπάρχει κάπου εκεί έξω, ένας συλλέκτης έργων τέχνης. Μόνο που τα έργα που συλλέγει δεν είναι πίνακες ζωγραφικής του Μονέ και του Πικάσο, αλλά περίτεχνα παραδοσιακά τατουάζ ιαπωνικής κουλτούρας (Irezumi tattoo). Ο τρόπος φυσικά για να τα αποκτήσει, είναι γδέρνοντας τα άτομα που φέρουν το τατουάζ, ζωντανά! Θεωρώ ότι είναι πολύ πιθανό να έλαβε η Belsham από την ταινία αυτή, την έμπνευσή για το πρώτο της βιβλίο αν και ο τρόπος που μας το δίνει, είναι πολύ διαφορετικός. Θα έλεγα ότι η απόδοση της Alison Belsham ήταν περισσότερο σεναριακή και κινηματογραφική, ενώ αντίθετα η ταινία ήταν πολύ πιο λυρική. Πολύ πιο μυθιστορηματικά δοσμένη με ωραία φωτογραφία και κάνα δυο κορυφαίες στιγμές (ιδίως μια, που δεν θα την ξεχάσω ποτέ!). Επειδή όμως το θέμα μας είναι το βιβλίο κι όχι η ταινία, θα σας πω ότι αν την πετύχετε πουθενά δείτε την για να έχετε και ιδίαν άποψη.

Αν και το βασικό θέμα της ιστορίας είναι τα τατουάζ, ένιωσα σε αρκετά σημεία ότι το αγγίζει επιδερμικά. Το τατουάζ εκτός από μόδα που έχει γίνει τα τελευταία χρόνια, για πολλούς ανθρώπους αλλά και φυλές, είναι άποψη, διαμαρτυρία, πολιτική ή θρησκευτική δήλωση. Στις σελίδες του βιβλίου, βλέπουμε τη συγγραφέα να αναλώνεται συχνά σε κλισέ του τύπου "κανείς δεν αγάπησε τα παιδιά με τα τατουάζ". Και δεν λέω ότι δεν υπάρχει ρατσισμός ενάντια στη διαφορετικότητα, ωστόσο, εν έτη 2020 που τα μάτια μας έχουν δει τόσα και τόσα, μου φαίνεται κουτό να εστιάζουμε τόσο πολύ στην περιθωριοποίηση των ατόμων με πολλά τατουάζ.

Η πλοκή λοιπόν, είναι αρκετά γρήγορη από τα μέσα περίπου του βιβλίου και μετά. Μέχρι τότε η εξέλιξη ήταν αργή, σε βαθμό να με βάζει πάραυτα για ύπνο. Στην πορεία όμως, έδωσε "γκάζια" και δημιούργησε κάποιες λίγες σκηνές χολιγουντιανής παραγωγής! Οι περιγραφές των εγκλημάτων ήταν αρκετά αιματηρές, ενοχλητικά ωμές, ανατριχιαστικές και αποτρόπαιες, πράγμα που αποζητώ όταν διαβάζω τέτοιου είδους βιβλία. Άρα με κάλυψε.

Οι χαρακτήρες της Belsham είναι συμπαθητικά σκιαγραφημένοι, αν και θεωρώ ότι θα μπορούσε και καλύτερα. Ο ντετέκτιβ Φράνσις Σάλιβαν, νεαρός σε ηλικία, με λιγοστή εμπειρία -Κύριος οίδε, πώς!- ξεπέρασε παλαιότερους στην υπηρεσία και πήρε τον βαθμό του ντετέκτιβ. Ακόμη κι ο ίδιος απορεί και το δηλώνει απερίφραστα. Ο Φράνσις λοιπόν είναι ένας εκνευριστικός τυπάκος, κάπως μελάτος σαν προσωπικότητα, αλλά έξυπνος και με ενδιαφέρον πολύ για τη δουλειά του. Μέσα από τις εξομολογήσεις του, μαθαίνουμε λίγα πράγματα για την προσωπική του ζωή και την οικογένειά του. Θεωρητικά πάντα, στο επόμενο βιβλίο της η Μπέλσαμ, θα μας τον γνωρίσει καλύτερα. Ο γηραιότερος συνεργάτης του Φράνσις, Ρόρι, είναι πικραμένος που τον παρέκαμψαν στην ιεραρχία και δεν διστάζει να βγει μπροστά όταν του δίνεται η ευκαιρία. Σύντομα όμως αναγνωρίζει την αξία και τα ταλέντα του νεαρού Φράνσις και συνεργάζονται αρμονικά. Το τρίτο πρόσωπο στην ιστορία, η Μάρνι Μάλινς, tattoo artist στο επάγγελμα, είναι εκείνη που ανακαλύπτει το πτώμα ενός άντρα πεταμένο σ' έναν σκουπιδοτενεκέ στο πάρκο. Η Μάρνι έχει βιώσει καταστάσεις στη ζωή της που την έχουν στιγματίσει και παράλληλα σκληρύνει. Μπλέκεται συνέχεια στα πόδια του Σάλιβαν, κάνοντας τα δικά της και τον εκνευρίζει. Στην πραγματικότητα, η Μάρνι "κλέβει την παράσταση" στο βιβλίο, καπακώνοντας πολλάκοις τους υπόλοιπους. Τελευταίος και καταϊδρωμένος, είναι ο Τιερί, Γάλλος στην καταγωγή, επίσης καλλιτέχνης τατουάζ και πρώην σύζυγος της Μάρνι. Ένας τύπος "πολλά βαρύς", που προσπαθεί φιλότιμα να αναδυθεί στην επιφάνεια αλλά και αυτόν τον κουκουλώνει η Μάρνι. Προσωπικά, όταν διάβαζα γι' αυτόν στο μυαλό μου έρχονταν τα μικρά γατάκια, που το παίζουν θυμωμένα, περπατάνε με τα πλάγια και κάνουν χου και χου! Διάφοροι άλλοι, δευτερεύοντες και υποστηρικτικοί χαρακτήρες, έπαιξαν κι αυτοί τον ρόλο τους, χωρίς να ξεχωρίσουν όμως σε κάτι.

Στα μείον του βιβλίου...
Ξεκινώντας λοιπόν η ιστορία κι ενώ έχουμε τα ακρωτηριασμένα ή γδαρμένα πτώματα να αρχίζουν να κάνουν την εμφάνισή τους το ένα πίσω από το άλλο, έχουμε τους ερευνητές και τον διοικητή τους να "τρώγονται" και να γκρινιάζουν μεταξύ τους, για το πως πρέπει να χειριστούν την υπόθεση. Αυτό από μόνο του "τρώει κόκκινη κάρτα", γιατί ακόμα και με την υπόνοια ότι πρόκειται για serial killer, ανασκουμπώνεσαι και παίρνεις μπρος. Δεν κάθεσαι να "διυλίσεις τον κώνωπα" και να παρακωλύεις την έρευνα με τυπολατρικές δικαιολογίες. Από την άλλη έχουμε, τον αστυνομικό επιθεωρητή να ερευνά τον τόπο του εγκλήματος παρέα με την tattoo artist. Χέρι-χέρι η αστυνομία με τους πολίτες...;! Ε, δεν γίνονται αυτά! Επίσης, δεν γίνεται να ανησυχείς αν επιμολύνθηκε ένα αντικείμενο που βρήκες στον τόπο του εγκλήματος, εφόσον υπάρχουν χίλια-δυο άλλα που αποτελούν αδιάσειστη απόδειξη του εγκλήματος που έχει διαπραχθεί. Κάτι τέτοια χαζά, συν το αναπόφευκτο love story, που δημιουργείται μεταξύ της Μάρνι και του Φράνσις με έκαναν να μειδιάζω ειρωνικά κάθε τόσο.

Κι αυτά που εκτίμησα...
Αυτό που μου άρεσε ιδιαιτέρως -βασικά πάντα μου αρέσει όταν το συναντώ στα βιβλία- είναι τα εμβόλιμα κεφάλαια, στα οποία μας "μιλάει" σε πρώτο πρόσωπο, ο δράστης. Θεωρώ ότι δίνουν μια ξεχωριστή δυναμική στο κείμενο κι ενδιαφέρον. Έτσι κι εδώ, έχουμε τον κλέφτη των τατουάζ, να μοιράζεται μαζί μας, σκέψεις, συναισθήματα και προθέσεις.

Στα υπέρ του βιβλίου και το πανέμορφο εξώφυλλο αλλά και η όπως πάντα, εξαίρετη μετάφραση του Αυγούστου Κορτώ. Ό,τι κι αν έχω διαβάσει σε μετάφραση δική του, με έχει αφήσει απόλυτα ικανοποιημένη από πλευράς μετάφρασης.

Εν κατακλείδι, το "Ο κλέφτης τον τατουάζ" είναι ένα αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα, με στοιχεία θρίλερ. Έχει αρκετά θεματάκια, ωστόσο, όπως είπα στην εισαγωγή μου, είναι με τέτοιο τρόπο γραμμένο, που δύσκολα το αφήνεις από το χέρι σου. Ίσως να είναι και το ιδιαίτερο θέμα του, το οποίο κακά τα ψέματα, είναι πολύ γοητευτικό. Είναι ένα βιβλίο, το οποίο διαβάζεται νεράκι και ξεκούραστα, όσο κι αν είναι ανατριχιαστικό στις περιγραφές του. Το προτείνω ως ένα χαλαρό ανάγνωσμα, για να περάσει ευχάριστα η ώρα. Θέλω να πιστεύω ότι αν στην πρώτη συγγραφική της απόπειρα κατάφερε να φέρει τούμπα τις όποιες αρνητικές εντυπώσεις και να αφήσει τον αναγνώστη με γλυκιά γεύση στο στόμα, στο επόμενό της η Μπέλσαμ θα κάνει θαύματα.

Κλείνω εδώ γιατί δεν θέλω όσοι ΔΕΝ έχουν διαβάσει το βιβλίο να διαβάσουν παρακάτω.

Αν έχεις διαβάσει το βιβλίο, προχώρα στην ανάγνωση. Αν όχι, άστο καλύτερα!
Κάτι που εκτίμησα επίσης, είναι το εξής: Όσο προχωρούσε η ιστορία, το μυαλό μου καταστάλαζε σε κάποιο συγκεκριμένο άτομο -συγκεκριμένα στον μέντορα της Μάρνι, τον Ιάπωνα Ιουσάο (ή όπως τον έλεγαν τέλος πάντων). Η Belsham όμως ανέτρεψε την υποψία μου, βάζοντας στην θέση του ιθύνοντα νου, ένα άτομο το οποίο ούτε καν φανταζόμουν. Έναν άοσμο, άγευστο κι άχρωμο τύπο, ο οποίος κάνει ένα εντελώς αδιάφορο πέρασμα κι ούτε θα φανταζόμουν ποτέ ότι θα λάμβανε τόσο σημαντικό ρόλο στη συνέχεια! Κι έτσι η επίπτωση της αποκάλυψής του ήταν πολύ ηχηρή και με ικανοποίησε.

Αντίθετα, όσον αφορά στον "κλέφτη" η αποκάλυψη του ατόμου ήταν τόσο αδύναμη που πέρασε σχεδόν απαρατήρητη. Μιλάμε για ένα άτομο που δεν φάνηκε ποτέ και πουθενά στην ιστορία. Ένα άτομο το οποίο είναι εντελώς ξένο προς τον αναγνώστη. Η έκπληξη (αν υπήρξε) λοιπόν είχε πολύ αρνητική χροιά. Πως να συμπαθήσεις ή να αντιπαθήσεις ένα άτομο το οποίο δεν γνωρίζεις καν; Πως να συμπάσχεις μαζί του και πως να κατανοήσεις τους σκοπούς του; Δεν ξέρω τι είχε στο νου της η Μπέλσαμ όταν δημιουργούσε αυτόν τον χαρακτήρα, ειλικρινά. Μάλλον ξέμεινε από επιλογές.

This book was on my radar for quite some time before I read it and once I did get my hands on a copy I just had to start it straight away. And I read it in one sitting as well as it is so completely and utterly gripping that I couldn’t bare to put it down! If, like me, you’re finding it hard to distinguish between police procedurals at the moment or want something a little bit different that really stands out from the crowd, then The Tattoo Thief is the book for you! It’s a fresh and exciting debut novel with interesting and intriguing characters whom I absolutely loved!

Marnie Mullins is a tattoo artist in Brighton with a rather complicated private life and a secret past. When she discovers a body whilst outside on a coffee break, she comes into contact with DI Francis (not Frank!!) Sullivan a newly promoted detective who needs to prove his worth. And when these two came together then sparks really did fly! Marnie has reasons to be wary of the police but when she spots a link between the body she discovered and other murders then she needs to work with Francis to bring a very disturbed serial killer to justice.

Pretty much everything about this book worked for me!! I loved Marnie Mullins, I found her to be a very strong minded individual but with a soft edge that made me want to protect her, especially as her tattoos also made her a target for this deranged murderer! I loved the idea that someone was killing people for their tattoos even though it was one of sickest collections I’d ever read about! And Alison Belsham did an AMAZING job of bringing the dark side of the tattoo scene in Brighton to life with her quirky characters and grisly murder scenes. I was completely gripped by the creepy antagonist and their point of view throughout the narrative and the twists and turns meant that I didn’t work out who was responsible until the big reveal.

I can’t wait to read more by Alison Belsham. This was an outstanding debut that took over my life whilst I was reading it. I was so utterly engrossed that I became part of its shadowy setting immediately and that feeling didn’t let up until the very end. Marnie and Francis were both characters who will stick in my mind and I would love to meet them again in the future.

Someone is stealing tattoos off dead people in Brighton. When Detective Inspector Francis Sullivan starts sniffing around, tattoo artist Marni Mulligan finds herself involved in a tattoo expert capacity. She doesn’t trust the police and wants nothing to do with the investigation, but at the same time finds herself drawn to Francis, whom she calls Frank, just to annoy him.

Alison Belsham’s story is quite an intricate mystery, and the whole tatto angle is pretty fascinating. I learned a lot about different techniques and styles, which I found quite interesting.

Francis Sullivan is the youngest DI at age 29. Disliked by his team, this gangly ginger dude is not quite convinced he deserved the promotion. Great start, isn’t it? He comes across sort of clumsy and weird, which made me question his promotion too, if I may say so. His boss, DCI Bradshaw is totally unprofessional, swears like a motherfucking sailor and calls Francis “boy” and calls him an idiot in front of colleagues. Other colleagues spent most of their time spying and snitching on each other. This behaviour was carried throughout the whole story, which, frankly sort of distracted me from the mystery on hand.

Let’s just hope the actual police is not a bunch of scheming wankers like these ones, otherwise we are all doomed

Έχω όχι ένα, ούτε δύο, αλλά εφτά τατουάζ -ενώ, μεταξύ μας, σκέφτομαι και για όγδοο, αλλά μην το πείτε ακόμα στον άντρα μου. Ως εκ τούτου, και δεδομένου ότι δεν τα έκανα σε πολύ μικρή ηλικία, αλλά αρκετά μεγάλη ώστε να είμαι σίγουρη πως τα θέλω και πως σημαίνουν κάτι για μένα, έχω ακούσει πάρα πολλά σχόλια όλα αυτά τα χρόνια από το γιατί να σημαδέψω το σώμα μου με κάτι που δεν ξέρω αν σε λίγα χρόνια θα μου αρέσει, μέχρι το ότι κάνουν κακό στην υγεία μας, για να φτάσουμε στην πλέον κλισέ ατάκα όλων: Έχεις σκεφτεί πώς θα δείχνουν όταν γεράσεις; Για να απαντήσω στο τελευταίο, ναι, φίλοι μου, το έχω σκεφτεί, αλλά αν έχω την υγεία μου, διόλου δεν με απασχολεί αν θα έχει κρεμάσει το δέρμα μου. Θα είμαι cool as fuck απλά και μόνο με το να είμαι εγώ. Θα αναρωτιέστε, τώρα, προς τι το παραλήρημά μου αυτό, και ίσως να έχετε δίκιο, αλλά διαβάζοντας τον "Κλέφτη των τατουάζ", αυτές είναι ορισμένες σκέψεις που σίγουρα θα περάσουν απ' το μυαλό σας και θα σας προβληματίσουν όσο πιο βαθιά μπαίνετε στον κόσμο της κοινότητας.

Η Μάρνι Μάλινς, καλλιτέχνις που δραστηριοποιείται στον χώρο των τατουάζ και που προσπαθεί, όχι με πολύ μεγάλη επιτυχία, να διατηρήσει αποστάσεις με τον πρώην σύζυγό της, θα ανακαλύψει τυχαία, και άθελά της, κάτι που θα της αλλάξει τη ζωή. Αυτό δεν είναι άλλο από ένα πτώμα μέσα σε έναν κάδο σκουπιδιών, που όπως προκύπτει από την έρευνα της αστυνομίας είναι παραμορφωμένο, ενώ είναι ένα από τα θύματα ενός σίριαλ κίλερ που φαίνεται να έχει ως στόχο του ένα και μοναδικό πράγμα. Ανθρώπους που φέρουν στο σώμα τους περίτεχνα τατουάζ, τα οποία ο ίδιος αφαιρεί, μαζί με τη σάρκα τους, ενώ εκείνοι είναι ακόμα ζωντανοί. Η υπόθεση περνάει στα χέρια του νεαρού ντετέκτιβ Φράνσις Σάλιβαν, ο οποίος θα καταφύγει στη βοήθεια της Μάρνι προκειμένου να μπορέσει να βρει τον δράστη και να σταματήσει την εγκληματική του δράση. Η Μάρνι, όμως, έχει ένα τραυματικό παρελθόν και μια ιστορία που την καθιστούν ανίκανη να εμπιστευτεί την αστυνομία, παρά που ο Σάλιβαν μοιάζει διαφορετικός απ' όσους έχει γνωρίσει ως τώρα. Έτσι, όταν θα ανακαλύψει στοιχεία σχετικά με την ταυτότητα του δολοφόνου, θα βρεθεί αντιμέτωπη με το δίλημμα να εμπιστευτεί τον Σάλιβαν ή να τον καταδιώξει μόνη της.

Το σίγουρο για το βιβλίο αυτό, είναι πως δεν απευθύνεται στον καθένα εκεί έξω, δεν είναι για όλους, δεν είναι σίγουρο πως θα το απολαύσεις. Είναι ιδιαίτερα σκοτεινό, παραστατικό και περιγραφικό, τόσο πολύ σε ορισμένα σημεία που είναι πολύ εύκολο να σε ενοχλήσει -εντός ή εκτός εισαγωγικών. Αν δεν ανήκεις στην κατηγορία εκείνη των αναγνωστών που είναι υπερευαίσθητοι κι εύθικτοι, τότε μάλλον θα απολαύσεις το "ταξίδι" αυτό, την τρομακτική εμπειρία αναζήτησης που έχει να σου προσφέρει, μα και τις γνώσεις που θέλει να μοιραστεί μαζί σου. Η Belsham, ακολουθώντας ένα μυθιστορηματικό gore μοτίβο που τα τελευταία χρόνια φαίνεται να έχει κερδίσει έδαφος ανάμεσα στους αναγνώστες του είδους, δημιουργεί μια ιστορία της οποίας ο πυρήνας είναι αρκετά πρωτότυπος κι ευφάνταστος, ενώ καταφέρνει να θίξει ένα αρκετά απλό θέμα, όπως είναι αυτό των τατουάζ και του κοινωνικού αντίκτυπου που έχουν όσοι τα φέρουν στο σώμα τους, μέσα από ένα πρίσμα λίγο πιο περίπλοκο και κυρίως πιο ουσιαστικό.

Σίγουρα, σε ό,τι έχει να κάνει με την αφηγηματική ροή, εντοπίζουμε κάποια σημεία που ο παλμός αυτής δεν είναι τόσο έντονος όσο θα θέλαμε, ή και θα μπορούσε, αλλά δεδομένου πως μιλάμε για την πρώτη συγγραφική απόπειρα της Belsham, μπορούμε να είμαστε λιγάκι πιο διαλλακτικοί κι ελαστικοί, ειδικά αφού το σύνολο έχει να μας προσφέρει πράγματα, ενώ στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος της πλοκής η αφήγηση είναι γεμάτη ένταση, σκοτεινή διάθεση, και μια αισθητική πολύ έξυπνα δομημένη που παντρεύει το χθες με το σήμερα, τις δοξασίες μιας άλλης εποχής με το πως αυτές έχουν απορροφηθεί και διαμορφωθεί στην εποχή μας κι έχουν γίνει κομμάτι μιας καθημερινότητας μέσα στην οποία μπορούν να ερμηνευτούν, παρ' όλα ταύτα, με δεκάδες τρόπους. Και δεν υπάρχει καλύτερος τρόπος να αποτυπωθεί όλο αυτό απ' ότι μέσω της αλληλεπίδρασης του Σάλιβαν και της Μάρνι, με την δεύτερη να τον μυεί στον κόσμο της, διευρύνοντας τους ορίζοντές του και κάνοντάς τον να δει με διαφορετικά μάτια όλα όσα μέχρι τώρα έβλεπε αλλά δεν παρατηρούσε βαθιά και ουσιαστικά.

Πολύ καλή και η ανάπτυξη των χαρακτήρων, από μεριάς της συγγραφέως, με τέσσερις εξ αυτών να βρίσκονται περισσότερο στο προσκήνιο. Προσωπικά λάτρεψα τη Μάρνι, κυρίως λόγω της αφοσίωσης και της πίστης της απέναντι στην κοινότητάς της και της τόλμης που η ίδια επέδειξε απέναντι στην όλη ιστορία, έστω κι αν κάποιες φορές άφησε μικρές της αδυναμίες να την θέσουν σε κίνδυνο. Ο Σάλιβαν, από την άλλη, ιδιαίτερα λόγω του νεαρού της ηλικίας του, είναι μια απ' τις πιο ενδιαφέρουσες ντεντεκτιβίστικες φιγούρες που έχουμε συναντήσει τα τελευταία χρόνια, κι έχω την αίσθηση πως αν η Belsham αποφασίσει στο μέλλον να τον αξιοποιήσει ξανά, μπορεί να τον αναπτύξει ακόμα καλύτερα και να μας προσφέρει ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον και πολυδιάστατο χαρακτήρα. Όσον αφορά τον δράστη... η παρανοϊκή ευφυΐα του και η φιλοσοφία πίσω από τη δράση του είναι τόσο περίτεχνη, όπως και το έργο που ο ίδιος έχει σκοπό να δημιουργήσει, που να το να μπει στο μυαλό του είναι αρκετά γοητευτικό από μόνο του. Όπως προείπα, λοιπόν, σίγουρα από το σκοτεινό βιβλίο δεν είναι για όλους, αλλά για όσους είναι θα μιλήσει στην καρδιά τους.
