This is a fun read. The suspense mystery and the romance blends perfectly. Miss Luis does not lose her focus on the suspense despite this is romance story.
The chemistry between Jade and Nathan is hot. Their lingering seduction, their inner dialog and finally the firework. It was fun and sassy.
This second book of the NOLA Heart series had so much potential and I enjoyed it overall. There were just some parts that got a bit repetitive and dragged out.
Jade is over men so she decided to uproot her whole life and make a change by moving to New Orleans and taking a job with the NOPD. It just so happens that her New Orleans contact is the step father of Nathan Danvers NOPD police man. Naturally through their mutual acquaintance and employment they are thrown together. The sparks sizzled immediately for this couple and I really enjoyed their interactions.
Nathan was taken almost immediately with Jade and accepted the attraction and set out to make Jade his. Jade on the other hand fought her attraction and hid things from Nathan that came back to hurt her and Nathan later on.
There were some odd parts of the story that I just couldn't quite figure out. I am not sure why Jade hid her ex as it really had no bearing on her relationship with Nathan. It was never exactly explained why Nathan and his step dad had such a contentious relationship. Nathan clearly respected him as a husband to his mother. And why on earth Jade's family brought the ex along to New Orleans with them to see Jade after she was hurt made no sense whatsoever. Don't get me wrong I know that Jade's mom had hopes of them getting back together and all that, but it was so odd when he talked to Jade. He never really made a convincing pitch to win her back. He just kind of talked about how his life changed and then the story moved on. I don't know. It was just odd.
All of that being said the story had enough positives in it's favor that I enjoyed it overall and will move on with this series. Just maybe not right away.
This book was a great mix of suspense (murder investigation) and romance. The characters were likeable and believable. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Just a note: This is now the third book I’ve read by this author in which “breaks” is used when it should be “brakes.” Time for a new editor?
4.5 ⭐ Book 2 in this series was absolutely great. Another realistic story, two very loveable characters. I love how the author has not only written a beautiful love story but also a crime story that never fades in the background. Everything is well thought out. Highly recommended!
I don't know if it's because I couldn't find the time to sit down and really connect with this book or if I couldn't connect with the characters. I enjoyed book 1 a lot better than book 2 in this series.
So we have second book in series, and Maria does not disappoint. This story is about Danvers, he was the funny detective who worked with Brady from first book. We find out that he uses humour to hide his pain and his true feelings, but he was a great guy and I loved him. We meet Jade, she is new to New Orleans, she is coming from Miami, and the beginning chapters of her and her mother is hilarious. Jade is starting over, does not want a relationship but then she meets Danvers, and they are hot together. I have to say, that I felt that she was a little hard on him, and judging him for her past relationship. But it all got resolved and I can't wait til next installment. Who can it be? Lizzie? Anna? Or Luke? Doesn't matter, sure will be great.
Take A Chance on Me is the second book in the NOLA Heart series. This is the first book I have read by Maria. I didn't feel lost by not reading Say You'll Be Mine but I definitely will be reading it. I loved Nathan and Jade. Their chemistry was HOT! I enjoyed the story and all the characters. The blurb caught my attention and I was hooked as soon as I started reading. I can't wait to see what Maria comes up with next.
Loved these two. Nathan is a hot as hell New Orleans homicide detective with a hard childhood, as in a dad that was an abusive alcoholic. Jade moves to New Orleans to work in the crime lab as a technician and get a new start to get away from her controlling mother, live her own life. These two meet at Nathan’s mom and stepdads house for dinner. His stepdad and her dad are friends, so his stepdad wants him to show Jade around....yup, you read that right *winks*.
We get a little suspense in this book, which I love. Nathan’s on a case that he thinks is an easy case, but ends up being a bit more difficult that he originally thought. And Jade helps him with it. Along the way, they break down each others walls to let the other in. These two have so much chemistry and they are a lot of fun too. This was a great safe read, with a lot of heat, no ow and a very tiny amount of om drama (just an ex that can’t except she broke up with him...her moms fault), with an epilogue and an hea. Now I am onto his sister Lizzie’s book...yay. Absolutely flove this series.
I feel like I gave this book a chance. I read through chapter three. Miles and miles of endless narrative, with a single line of conversation occasionally thrown in. It gets so boring. It's so much more interesting to me, when a writer allows the story to tell itself, through conversations between the characters. Page after page of needless narrative just drags the story down, for me, to a point where I am no longer interested in the story at all. I just reached that point much more quickly than usual in this case.
In the second book of the NOLA Heart series we get to know Nathan Danvers, a detective with the New Orleans Police Department and Jade, a new hire with the department’s crime scene unit. By his boss, who is also good friends with Jake’s father, Danvers is tasked with showing Jade around town and keeping his hands off of her. Well, you know how well that usually works. When Danvers needs Jake’s help solving a homicide and they begin working group together, things begin to heat up between the two of them.
Nathan Danvers is a hero who sneaks his way into your heart and makes himself at home, and you love every minute of it. He’s a strong, cocky alpha with a softer, more vulnerable side. He’s not incredibly damaged, but perhaps more of a man with some old, set in wrinkles that need smoothing out. Jade has her own set of issues as she works to find her place in the world and be more confident in the wonderful woman she truly is. I loved both of these characters and enjoyed watching their development and growth as the story progressed. This author has an uncanny ability to coax and tease the reader along, craftily doling out bits and pieces of critical information, planting seeds of ideas without blatantly stating anything until just the right time in the story’s progression.
An excellent follow up to Say You’ll Be Mine, Take A Chance On Me has just as much sass, attitude, humor and chemistry to offer hours of reading enjoyment. You’ll laugh, you’ll be entertained, you’ll have your heart tugged, and you’ll have that warm sense of satisfaction at the end of the book. Ms. Luis is one of the most remarkable new authors I’ve seen in a long time and her work is a rewarding, fulfilling read! Not only that, but every time you see a tiny drink umbrella, you’ll fondly remember Nathan Danvers.
Nathan Danvers is a former marine who now works as a detective at NOPD alongside with Brady Taylor( MC of the previous book). He is the stepson of the LT although he hide their kinship. He is the typical carefree, funny man, who drinks girly and fruity drinks with tiny umbrella included, man of one-night stands but who hides inside many insecurities and pain from his past. Jade is the daughter of the Miami P.D. Chief who gets a job as a technician at the NOPD crime lab, leaving her fiancé and her family behind to start a new chapter in her life. When she meets Nathan she feels attracted to him immediately but she remembers her rules: “First, no dating—Jade needed to try out the single life. Second, focus on her new job. The two went hand-in-hand.” But in the end they succumb to the attraction once they realize all the things they have in common and working together in the same case, they begin to realize that they could be more, but Nathan’s past, along with Jade’s need of independence, in addition to the case makes this couple go through difficult times. Who would have imagined that Nathan Danvers was so naughty between the sheets?🔥🔥🔥
Nathan stepped forward. “How does she look at me?” he said, voice pitched low enough to send anticipated shivers dancing down her spine. “Like you’re everything she’s ever dreamed of and everything she’s ever feared.”
His mouth claimed hers in a deep kiss, bypassing the flirtation stage as he rocked her to her very core. He pulled back, just far enough to say, “I’m going to give you everything I have until you don’t even remember your own name. And before that, I’m going to give you my trust.”

Maria Luis takes you back to New Orleans with a gorgeous, dirty talking detective and a brazen crime lab tech in Take A Chance On Me, the second installment in her NOLA Heart series. I was impressed with Maria’s writing skills in her detailed descriptions, character development and the amount of humor and banter she brought to the table.
Detective Nathan Danvers is many things, but settling down with a woman is not one. Playboy within the NOPD, he loves to have fun until Jade Harper is in his sights. Will Jade uncover one of the many secrets he is hiding behind his ever bouts of humor?
Jade is fed up on men. Not looking for anything serious, just a good time in a new city. When she’s tasked to help Nathan on a job, their chemistry and relationship take off. What happens when they walk the fine line between lust and love?
In Say You’ll Be Mine, I wasn’t really hooked, but within this second book, I must say Maria Luis has captured me with this storyline and these two impeccable characters! Nathan will steal your heart if you're not careful ladies. He’s strong but has a softer side to his alpha tendencies. Yes, he has some baggage, but it’s not too much, just needs a woman to make him whole. Jade is a feisty woman who truly needs Nathan in her life. Their chemistry was strong to deny and Maria did an amazing job at constructing them.
I am glad I kept reading the NOLA Heart series and I can’t wait to read the next book, ‘Dare You to Love Me’.
J’aime beaucoup Maria Luis.
This is my first full-length novel by Maria Luis. My prior experience with Luis' writing is her ongoing weekly serialized novel, Breathless; which I have found impressively fun and well-written. My intention was to read the first NOLA book prior to reading Take a Chance on Me, but this book stands nicely on its own.
For me, it took until the 40% mark for the story to really pick up. That first 40% was spent building up some of the back stories, potential romance, and set up the murder investigation. Maybe that's the norm, but it felt a bit drawn out. At the same time, the story was immediately inundated with some entertainingly funny moments of misunderstandings, internal monologues, and witty banter. I was immediately endeared to both main characters. When I hit the 40% mark, I was fully invested and needed to see how the romance and mystery played out.
I am extremely impressed with Maria Luis' humor, details and overall writing skills. I enjoyed how the book supplied some light mystery/suspense with the romance and how each was handled. Ultimately, I loved the characters and rooted for their well-deserved happily-ever-after. This is definitely a book I would recommend and I, personally, will be making sure I tackle her well-reviewed back list. (I voluntarily read an advanced copy of Take a Chance On Me. This review is my honest and unbiased opinion.)
Oh my goodness! What a book! This is my third book from this author, and they just keep getting better!
Jade is ready for a new start, so she lands in NOLA and gets a job working for the police crime lab. She meets Nathan through a mutual connection and while the sparks are flying everywhere they each have their own reasons for avoiding the obvious inevitability of their union. Nathan has his own troubled emotions to deal with, and the way Jade just sees right through him was priceless.
These two are so perfect together. Their flirtatious banter was hot and steamy and hilarious at the same time. Nathan is all kinds of sexy with just enough of an air of seductive danger to make panties melt instantly. Jade may not be able to resist his charms, but she sure can stand up to his BS!
Oh, and in the midst of all this hotness (and there’s a lot of it), there’s a murder mystery to solve. Jade and Nathan work together for the most part, when Jade’s not trying to go out on her own to investigate, regardless of the risks.
I absolutely loved the final scene in the hospital – not to give away any spoilers, but Nathan’s speech then had EVERYONE falling in love with him, guaranteed. I promise you, after reading this book you’ll never eat pizza (or even look at ties) the same way again! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
"Take A Chance On Me" by Maria Luis, is the second book in the NOLA Heart series. Featuring Detective, Nathan Danvers and new crime lab technician, Jade Harper.
Jade a former resident of Miami Florida is through with men, coming off a four year relationship with John Thomas her ex-boyfriend she is disenchanted with both him and the entire male species. Jade moved to New Orleans for a fresh start and a chance to be a single once again that is until she laid eyes on Detective Nathan Danvers of the New Orleans P.D. To say their chemistry was off the wall would be to underestimate its affects. Unfortunately, Danver's who hides his pain with humor finds it hard to believe that his relationship with Jade is more than just physical. He doesn't believe Jade loves him and he manages to mess up his relationship with her hurt both her and himself. Ms. Luis has done it again and has written an incredible story. "Take A Chance On Me" is not only a great love story it is an intriguing mystery novel as well. I love reading this book and I hardily recommend it.
I received this book from the author and I am freely posting this fair and balance review.
***Standalone*** wow! So i read the first book say you'll be mine which was about shaylean and Brady and i didn't think about reading the other books in the series until now - i know i'm sorry :/ but now obviously i regret doing that because this book so so insightful and very deep it was very engaging. although this book had a few make out scenes in it, not many, the writing and the story plot was very very very effective and intriguing because i felt like it was all about personal growth and overcoming your fear of you past and your experiences and giving new people a chance at life and love. i love how Nathan and jade are able to have a comfortable banter and still be so emotionally connected with each other which i loved in this book there are several more characters that are introduced that I've fallen in love with like jades sister Sammie and Nathan's sister Lizzie. i also like how it is very criminal based and very mysterious and it does pique your interest and you do really want to know who in the end did murder charlie zeker and honestly i had a tad bit of suspicion is was who it was but i wont spoil it for you ;) definitely recommend reading this book
I do not know how Maria Luis does it, but she's done it again with another fun, flirty and sexy read! I was so excited for Danvers to get his own story and Maria did not disappoint!
The writing is charming, witty and engaging! I loved how strong Jade is and how Nathan cannot seem to get enough of her..despite her being off limits! Their chemistry jumped off the page and held me captive from beginning to end. I literally lost sleep as I could not put this book down once I started. Dynamic characters along with some stellar writing made this one fun, flirty and downright sexy romance!
Danvers (Nathan) is haunted by his past but is he able to keep the ghosts at bay in order to give him and Jade a real chance at love? Is Jade willing to see that she doesn't have to give up who she is or her career for a chance at love? Trust me, this story has it all...suspenseful twists, engaging characters, sweet nothings, witty and sassy banter and some downright sexy scenes! Just read it, you won't be disappointed!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC for my honest review.
Book 2 of the NOLA Heart series takes us back to New Orleans to meet hot detective Nathan Danvers and newbie, Jade Harper. Jade’s just finished with her ex-boyfriend and is determined to forget about men, She left Miami for a new start, new job, new life but no new boyfriend. But one look at Nathan and she’s ready to forget all about that plan. Her job in the crime lab means she has to work with Nathan on occasion, and she soon finds about his a reputation as a player which should make her less interested in him. But what’s a girl to do? Nathan, once a marine and now a detective isn’t interested in happy ever afters, just happy for right nows, and hee makes sure to tell Jade as much. But things are a changin’. I couldn’t help laughing at some of the scenes in this book, as well as needing a cold drink after the hot sexy times too. Grab your own copy and settle down for a hilarious, sometimes thoughtful ride around town in this rom-com which is a great follow on from the first in the series.
This book sees us with sexy homicide detective Nathan Danvers. We met him in book 1 as Brady's coworker and he's a bit of a funny guy and I LOVE when the funny guy gets his story and you realise there is so much more to him. Behind his funny guy persona Nathan's dealt with a pretty shitty childhood and it makes him even more endearing and really easy to fall in love with. Jade is a new hire in the crime scene unit. Nathan is tasked with showing Jade around the area while keeping his hands to himself. Something he finds increasingly more difficult.
We get a bit of suspense in this one that I really love. Nathan's tasked with working a crime that becomes a little harder than he anticipated and with Jade helping him with it it leads to some really great moments between the pair and some sizzling chemistry.
This was the perfect follow on to Say You'll Be Mine. It has the same sexy characters and humour with the same hint of seriousness. I loved the introduction of new characters in this, mainly Nathan's sister Lizzie.
“Take A Chance On Me” is a romantic comedy/mystery set in New Orleans. Protagonist and NOLA detective Nathan Danvers, known as a love ‘em and leave ‘em type, meets up with Jade Harper, recent transplant to the Big Easy and a newly-minted crime scene tech with family connections to NOPD. What ensues had me somewhere between a grin and a full belly laugh during the witty repartees and wishing I was a lot younger amidst the steamy love scenes. While the plot premise is possible, it’s only slightly probable, but it’s definitely entertaining. And isn’t that what an enjoyable read is all about? Not to be too nit-picky but a copy editor should’ve caught the mixed up homophones, questionable word choices and the inevitable but avoidable typos. They are distractions to the reader. A copy editor is an unnecessary expense only if you’re not interested in selling more books. Are you an author if no one is willing to pay for your work?
I thought this series has been a very enjoyable discovery! The writing is witty, the hot and steamy scenes satisfy my need for books with a kick, the characters are well-rounded (with some dealing with inner demons or difficult pasts), the storyline is diverting, and the quirky love stories end in HEA. The author herself calls the books flirty, and I completely agree.
In Take A Chance On Me, Jade has her hands full with Nathan. A great guy with the kind of past that haunts his present, he’s slow to embrace the thought of a real relationship with anyone. Jade is looking for a new start, not a new love, but realizes at some point there’s no denying how strong her feelings for Nathan end up. But theirs is not a smooth ride and deep-rooted fears risk to ruin the best thing that’s happened to each of them. I loved Jade’s spunk and there was something irrevocably masculine and brawny about Nathan (despite his quirky side and fruity drinks) that had me swooning for him the whole way!
