A tale of finding out what and who she really is, and being saved by someone who she's terrified of! This story is full of dangerous, crazy magical beings that she fights every night. Yet finds her magic is much stronger than theirs are.

Cliffhanger ending is frustrating

At under 150 pages, this was okay for what it was. The main protagonist is undergoing a magical change which has har freaking out. That is understandable, but her proficiency with defending herself was stretching credulity a tad.

Unfortunately, her strength and power is reduced to her needing a man to live. Frustrating stereotype in fantasy, and having it end in an obvious cliffhanger designed to get you to buy the second part (when this all could have been one volume) is just rubbing salt in the wound.

I agree with some of the reviewers regarding the overall pace and the actions of the MC. I feel like I was waiting the entire book for a "reveal" conversation to take place, only to be left on a cliffhanger. In addition, I am getting tired of this trope of an exceptionally powerful MC who doesn't get any answers. I think it's more a matter of pace here, though; I think the emotions and thoughts the MC is dealing with could be compressed into a shorter timeline.

That being said, this is a short book, and I imagine that the entire series could easily be put into one large fantasy novel. If that were the case, I don't think it would feel like the actions of the book took too long. I think it's just because this story is presented as a stand-alone that the pace is very strange, but if you look at it as part of a larger story I suspect it would make more sense. I almost wonder if the author wrote the entire story and then broke it up for sales (which I have no problem with).

All in all, the idea is a unique one, and I am interested in where the story goes. Even though it's flawed, I liked it enough that I just purchased the second one. We'll see how it goes from there!

This book isn't for the faint of heart. There's several qualities to it that make it more unlikeable than the story really should be, such as a main character who is ignorant of who she is and what she's supposed to be. A general strong male character who sounds like a love interest that's more of a trope than a character.

What pushed me through it? The concept. Its an original idea, and the events that do happen amongst the blithering/plodding are unique and inventive. If I had written this review prior to reading the second book, I think my view of it would be less charitable. But its worth sticking out this one for the next one (I don't blame you if you scroll through some of the plodding).

This was quite different to what I expected, and was also unexpectedly short. I'm interested in where this series is going to go.

About half way through this novel, I was already disappointed by the slow pace of the novel and the inane and repetitive inner monologue of the main character, but I thought to see how far I could get before I just couldn't take it anymore. I was able to finish, but as so many indie authors do these days, the novel is drawn out and the reader is given a ridiculous cliffhanger. No substantive questions are answered in this novel. You don't find out ANYTHING you didn't already know in the first chapter.

This novel gets 2 stars from me because the idea is intriguing and there was some good action. Even so, that action is mindless and doesn't actually progress the plot.

I also have a low tolerance for characters that don't use all the resources at their disposal to get answers to their questions about themselves. I also get a little angry at authors, who seem to only portray female characters in this way, as if a male character would never hem and haw and dither about finding answers. Sorry, ppl, woman here would straight up get answers in a careful, strategic way. This female character is in a catatonic state for half this novel and straight panic for the other half when she could have grabbed the opportunity that presented itself after the kid died and told her to warn his king about the war. After witnessing Spencer's little tete-a-tete with shadow guy, she could have told her boss all about what she saw. Nope. She SITS on critical information as if she's not at all part of that world. Uber lame.

I was tempted to buy book 2, but from description provided and the fact that others await book 3, I'm guessing it's just more of the same. So I'll pass.

Ugh why do I keep doing this to myself, the story could be great but it’s let down by the blithering idiot of a main character. On the plus side at least it was short
