Leanne Marshall is a Scottish-born and bred romance writer with more than average life experience. She has been a torrent of wild things, including a singer in a girl band, animal rights activist, and charity owner, worked on radio, and offered jobs on TV. A passionate, restless soul who has always found peace in writing, the only way to calm that fiery spirit. She uses her wit and dark humor to her advantage in her works and has been an avid reader for most of her life. Her influences vary, but from early life and a teen stint in journalism, she applies logic to most of her plot lines, is a confessed research fiend, and likes a lot of psychology behind her character's actions. She currently resides in Central Scotland with her two children and Fiancee of 13 years, making waves in the book world with her signature 'WTF moments' she likes to apply in each story, hints of humor, and devastating emotional rollercoaster rides. Quote from L.T. Marshall - 'Writing has always been an escape for me, loving that no matter what you are doing, where you are - you can create ideal fantasy and get lost in someone else's life. I love nothing more than drawing a reader with me on a journey that tortures your every emotion before the grand exhale.'
Blurb: Emma Anderson has everything in her life worked out. She has her perfect job in a Manhattan empire allowing her to live a quiet and organised safe existence. A necessity to her, after a childhood filled with bad memories, abuse, and a mother who was less than useless. But, with it comes a problem, one that could derail everything she thought she needed in her life. Her promotion sends her straight into the close employment of young, gorgeous, playboy billionaire, Jacob Carrero with his formidable reputation for being a player. Stuck as his right-hand man, every waking moment of every single day, she realises he is exactly the type of person who could drive her crazy, and not in a good way. Like chalk and cheese, he is everything she's not. Compulsive, confident, laid back, dominant and fun, with a seriously laid back attitude to casual sex and dating. Jake is the only one with an ability to steamroll over her manicured ice maiden exterior, who is not phased by the closed in demeanour and cool manners, but as much as she wants to, letting him in is another thing entirely. A past that made her man wary and no desire to ever let one close enough to hurt her again, Jacob Carrero has his work cut out. He is not someone who takes NO for an answer and will have to learn how to break through if he wants more than the mask she shows the world. Jake needs to show her that even some one like him can change when that one girl that matters breaks through. Love-able sexy characters and deep emotional topics. Contains some mature, adult content and language. Book 1 in The Carrero Series.
this is a re-read for me, and just like the first time I read it I'm unsure on how to review it because I'm feeling so many emotions and really struggling to put them into words.
I know a lot of people don't like to re-read books because they think it's pointless, after all you already know what's going to happen! - I loved this book even more this time round, because I knew the main plot points and what was going to happen I picked up on things I hadn't before, noticing the small things and knowing they are the start of Emma letting go of her "ice queen" persona and letting Jake slowly chip away at it.
It also makes the heart wrenching moments worse, I saw the build up sooner and was dreading it earlier than I had been before, it built anticipation and made it more of a page turner.
Reading about Emma's turbulent relationship with her parents (both for different reasons) really struck a chord with me, especially with her mum, a mother and daughters relationship is supposed to be a special one, and I found myself relating to her, because deep down despite what she said, you could tell that all she really wanted was for her mum to love her and want to be there for her the way a mother should.
I absolutely loved seeing the relationship between Jake and Emma blossom, it was so heartwarming watching him just be there for her and try to prove to her that not everyone will want something from her or walk away from her.
The constant push and pull of their relationship, both working and personal was frustrating but addictive to read about.
And the ending broke me all over again. I can't wait to get lost in the second book and be back in the world of Jake and Emma.
This book reminded me of the movie Two Weeks Notice with a twist of Fifty Shades. The main character Emma struggles with psychological issues caused by a traumatic childhood which I had trouble relating too, but I can empathize with anyone who has to deal with these emotional burdens that can affect day to day life. I haven't decided if I will read the rest of the series yet since I prefer to read books with a stronger, more self-assured and independent female lead character. The male lead, Jake, gave me mixed signals regarding his personality. His use of nicknames and sexual innuendos are a little off-putting but then he is capable of doing a 180 and being the charming considerate 'guy best friend' type. So I've been left conflicted with my feelings for the two main characters and the book overall. I would still recommend it for anyone who likes the idea of an office romance with the 'hot playboy boss' kind of fantasy! There is no shortage of sexual tension and questionable professional conduct! Enjoy!
I want to go to bed for a week and sleep. I want to cry my heart out because I am so connected to Emma that I feel like I am her. My heart is broken. What a fantastic read. I was drawn into the Carrero world and connected on such a deep level with Emma.
For a debut book and the first of a series this was a brilliant way to start. The Carrero Effect centres around Emma and Jake and their relationship. Emma hides behind her PA persona and is the ultimate professional while working for Jake she begins to let her guard down and we see glimpses of how she ban really be. It is obvious that something in her past has caused her to behave like this and Jake is determined to get through to her. Just when it seems that they have taken a step forward the appear to go 3 steps back. As they become closer things begin to get a little complicated and something has to give. This book ends on a cliffhanger of epic proportions but lucky enough Book 2 is available to download right away. Can't wait to read more from the author.
I had wanted to read this book for a long time after seeing so many positive comments about it! It was definitely worth the wait and I was far from disappointed!
26 year old Emma gets a job as PA for attractive millionaire Jake Carrero. Their relationship has a rocky start but the pair eventually become friends and Emmas walls slowly start coming down with Jakes help and persistence.
I really felt for Emma. I sympathised for her, laughed with her, it was very easy for me to warm to her character. I loved her strength, and my admiration for her grew as we learnt more about her past. I had a harder time accepting Jake. The character was very well written but I found his personality a bit strong at times which I actually really liked.
I could not put this book down and will definitely be continuing the series! Highly recommended!
This book is such an emotional rollercoaster, I loved it.
At first I really couldn’t warm to uptight Emma but Jake slowly broke her and made her loosen up (especially drunk Emma😉)
I soon got sucked into this story and felt like I was Emma , I felt all her emotions first hand, I had to remind myself many a time that it wasn’t real life. Leanne writes in such a way to make you feel this, she’s a fantastic author who needs to be recognised more.
I would love to see this story turned into a film or a Netflix series.
I finished The Carrero Effect by L.T. Marshall yesterday but it's only now that I feel able to convey my feelings in what I hope will do this book some justice. To say I loved it would be an understatement, I absolutely freaking fell head over heels for this book. Within the first few pages I was gripped, I just had to go on this journey and see where we ended up.
Emma is a PA living in New York when she gets a promotion to a PA of Jacob (Jake) Carrero, millionaire and has an army of leggy females all around the country. Emma has to cater to Jake's every whim and from the very start it's clear how different they are. Emma is hiding a past and Jake is determined to get her out of her shell and to just relax.
At first, I struggled to warm to Emma but by the end of the first few chapters I loved her. Later when we learn of Emma's past and why she is the way she is, I loved her even more. Her strength and her willpower is still fabulous. I adored the relationship that surfaced between Jake and Emma, be prepared to go through a range of emotions with this pair.
I was gripped by this book, I couldn't put it down, I just had to know what was going on. My emotions went through the wringer and it was a rollercoaster of a read.
I don't want to say too much more apart from go read this book and then download book two as you'll have to after that ending! I have book two ready to go once my emotions have calmed a bit more!! Absolutely amazing read with some very believable and likeable characters.
I stumbled across this as a book suggestion as I was searching for a trilogy to read, I'm quite picky about triolgys as I like to go along on a journey with the characters and envolpe my self into there story. This book did not disappoint!!! from the very first chapter I was swallowed up into there universe, I invested myself into there relationship. Luckily as I was late to the Carrero saga I didnt have to wait to continue on the journey. IfI had read the book upon it's first release I would have been devasted to wait for the continuation. If you like myself appreciate a amazing romance with complex charters emotions please read this series. The Author has a way of capturing your emotions from laughter to ugly crying almost without even trying.
Boss/PA relationship. Ex drama. Hero is with others after meeting heroine, though no details. Hero gets ex pregnant and finds out when he is with heroine. It's not cheating as they are not a couple as they feel it's crossing the emplyer/employer line but they have kissed etc. Things may not been as they appear. Cliffhanger. To me they seemed a bit childish, shouting and rowing all the time. The story does draw you in.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is me second reread of the Carrero Effect, it still made me go through loads of emotions while watching Emma and Jake become entwined in each other's lives. I enjoy L.T Marshall's writing style. The story has depth to it and isn't your run of the mill contemporary romance. It tackles different issues and it well written. I recommend it to everyone I speak to.
Come mai?
Well, this was a book I had heard of and paid little attention to wanting to read, for whatever reason. Most likely the 2000 other books sitting on my TBR pile. But the reviews just kept coming for this book and the hype got greater and greater so when the book was free on Amazon during a promo, I decided to find out what the hype was really all about.
This book I had decided would be another 50 shades. Rich guy meets vulnerable less fortunate chick and their desire for each other is electric. And for the most part this book was somewhat like that. However I found this book more frustrating. Marshall did well with the execution of this storyline. A very capable (yet troubled) young lady is promoted to PA for Jake, the CEO of Carrero Enterprises who has every woman in his wake pining for him (including his female readers!) and it is the chemistry between these two characters that keeps you flipping through the pages to see just what will happen next. But both are troubled, hidden by dark pasts and a determination not to let the other in sees their relationship become strained and difficult.
In my honest opinion, while there are niggly things I didn't like, I honestly loved this book and it scores a very rare 5 star rating from me. The things I didn't like - there were a lot of editing issues in the book. Typos, missing or incorrect words. No big deal although it was a little off putting. I didn't like the ending......because, well, everyone wants a happy ending, though the ending is perfect for this book given there is a second and third in the series. I don't like the fact that my bank balance is going to suffer at the hands of L.T. Marshall now that I am compelled to purchase every book she's ever written!! And finally, I didn't like Emma a lot of the time. Her self doubt and head got in the way a lot and I really wanted to shake her.
What I did love about this book is Leanne's writing style. I loved the way the story sucked me in right from the start. This is my biggest issue when reading books is being bored by all the bullshit in the beginning. This had none of that and I was immediately drawn into the characters and their lives. I loved the way that there were not too many characters written into the book. I find this hard to keep up to a storyline when too many characters are involved. I loved how charged Leanne keeps her readers, I felt I was holding my breath while reading and I was willing the storyline to go the way I wanted it too and I was usually let down, leaving me frustrated and dying for more. Very clever Leanne, very clever. I also loved how well the storyline gelled both in and out of the office, intertwining other characters and storylines perfectly (Emma's Mum and Dad, her childhood etc). There were nights when I was so invested in this book that I even dreamed about it.
If I could honestly give it more than 5 stars I would. A brilliant book, a brilliant storyline and a brilliant author who forever has a new fan to add to her ever growing pile. These books will be purchased for my kindle to read now and eventually be purchased in paperback and stored with utter pride in my precious library at home.
A Rollercoaster Ride of EmotionsThe Promotion: Jake & Emma (The Carrero Series Book 1)
I originally thought this was going to be your typical romance novel. As with most romance novels, you have your reserved, guarded, ordinary but beautiful female (Emma) and a hunky rich, playboy love interest (Jake). But to make matters more complicated, Jake is her Emma's boos.
From this description, it doesn't sound very original, but oh how wrong could I be! There is so much more to these characters and plot than I first expected. As I got to know my new friends, I couldn't help but feel for them. There is so much more to them than meets the eye. They both have complicated families, and Emma, in particular, is very layered and complex.
This book sucked me in, when I finished, I went straight to Amazon to download the next one (The Carrero Influence ~ Redefining Rules: Jake & Emma in case you're interested) In fact I did the same thing once I finished the second. The story captured me in a way I had not expected. I didn't think I would love the characters as much as I did and I became completely invested in what was going to happen to them next.
Abuse and the recovery process thereafter are running themes throughout. I found the characters responses to the abuse very realistic and my heart broke for them at various points throughout the book.
The Carrero Effect does contain mature content that may be triggering for some. That being said Marshall deals with the sensitive subjects incredibly well. I have read books in the past that contained abuse, some of which I couldn't finish, as they made me uncomfortable and some that shocked me so much I had to put the book down.
This was not the case with The Carerro Effect. Marshall is gentle with the reader and does not use abuse simply to shock the reader. The way the underlying storyline of abuse is unreeled is thought-provoking, making me rethink the way abuse can manifest and the mental implication it can have on the people involved.
Character development throughout was great, and Marshal really knows how to keep you turning the page. The chemistry between the characters was amazing and you could feel the tension between them oozing from the pages. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next part of the series.
The Carrero Effect provoked so many emotions in me. I laughed, cried and even got angry at times, but I couldn't put it down.
I really struggled to get into this book, I felt like I knew the basic plot line from the beginning, a fairly typical office/forbidden romance with a twist thrown in of course, and I’m not entirely convinced I’m wrong. I’m used to the whole thing being resolved in one book, not a series, but that’s my theory, who knows, I could be wrong. That does not mean however that this is a bad book. The character are real and tangible and confusing and a little off at times. The characters evolve. I think it took so long for me to get into this book is because the first 4-6 chapters were so stiff, not just the characters, like they were forced. It feels like a book that the author started in the middle looked at it and said oh shoot I can’t just start there, there has to be some lead up. I may continue on with the story, I’m hoping for some more Sophie involvement, I really liked her character but I understand why that may never be. Overall, something I would recommend to a romance lover or lover of the office romance storyline.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review via Voracious Readers Only.
I have to say I didn't like Emma in the beginning but having read her story it made sense she needed to be that way. She is so very conflicted but needs to feel in control. Jake try's his hardest to break her down see the real her he really wants her wants her to be fully open to him. It was nice to see that two very different people from two totally different worlds could fit so well. I wasn't expecting the end and it actually made me cry I so wanted it to be. The delicate handling of abuse is written tactfully and is well structured. It had my heart pounding at times and I truly felt for Emma on every level especially at the end. A very skilfully written book I am hooked and can't wait to read them all.
I absolutely fell in love with Emma and Jake from the start. Emma is relatable to anyone who has gotten over a rough part of life and is determined to keep the rest of their life on track, no matter what. Jake wasn't as relatable but he's hotter than Louisiana in August. Even if he's got a stubborn streak a mile wide that sometimes makes you want to shake him. This is a great story of how they grow individually and how they fight a war within themselves. Each as a plan for their future - but what does life have in store instead?
Received as a gift, all opinions are my own and totally honest
I was sent this book by the author to review and have to say I really really enjoyed it. The characters are well written and you find yourself caring about them. Emma Anderson is the new PA to Jake Carrero, a playboy millionaire who is determined to find out what makes Emma tick. I enjoyed the book more because the characters didn't head towards the bedroom within the first couple of chapters but instead we got to see their relationship evolve and what made them like they are. Have to say the ending was a shocker....so used to the happy ever after by the last page that I actually shouted "WHAT?!" at the end...thankfully my husband got me book 2 the following morning so I could carry on LOL!
I was not sure about this book when I started reading it, but the story pulled me in and I started enjoying the story and needed to find out what happens with the characters. I only stopped reading when I realised that I needed to get to sleep and then when I got to the end of the book. Now I desperately need to get hold of book 2.
Just finished this book!! When I first started reading I wasn’t sure what to expect. Believe me when I say You will not be disappointed!! I absolutely love the characters and the story line is strong! I fell in love with Jake and Emma and I can’t wait to find out what happens next!!!!
Could not put this book down. Story line is developed well, not just a standard romance. What a rollercoaster ending. Going onto second book. Definitely recommend.
Loved it! Fantastically written characters - I want a friend like Jake! A tale of friendship, the past and love. Absolutely heartbroken with the ending though so in need to read on to see what happens next. Highly recommended and unexpected.
OMG what a rollercoaster this book has been! Pretty much every chapter had me with my mouth open in horror/ awe/ happiness or a mixture of all! Sorry can’t write much more as off to get book 2........
Jake and Emma, be ready to get invested in their lives, live through their laughter and cry through their pain. Page after page you get so much more than you expect, touching emotions you don’t realize are happening because you are so wrapped up in their story. I can’t wait to start the second book so I can see where L. T. Marshall takes us! Bravo L. T.!
eye catching cover, made me want to read this book, i know i never judge a book by its cover but i did this time around. very emotional to read, i was so engrossed in this beautiful book, jake carrero uncovers emmas past, and so the story enfolds into one that is fantastic all the way through, so glad i was giving the chance to read this book. brilliant
Omg. Wow. No words to describe this book. Around 10% I was annoyed with the main female lead, her moaning was grating my nerves and I nearly gave up. I stopped reading and read the reviews and seeing how fantastic they all are I continued and omg how glad I am that I did. I fell for Emma and Jake. For their relationship, their understanding and banter, it blew me away. Soon as I finished book 1, I got book 2 and currently engrossed in it. Absolutely amazing book. Everyone has got to read this.
When you start reading this kind of books you think that you have it all figured out and that it is going to resemble the other similar books of this genre.
I must say that I am very glad I was wrong! The story of Jake and Emma is one that I am going to definitely remember!
I like the fact that characters are evolving gradually while you are turning one page after another. On every page you find out something interesting about both of them that continues depicting their amazing sorry.
I liked everything you found out about Jake during the reading, as well as Emma and her changes. I honestly hope that this is going to be a movie one day soon!
Thank you L.T. Marshall for this amazing journey. I am currently on book 3 and enjoying every second of it!
Had me wanting more , could not put down apart from when needing tissues , I have not read a book like this for a long time I need to know what happens
