This is a prequel story to a series about what happens when everything goes haywire. It reads more as a why you should be a prepper than a how to be a prepper.
It is hard to get a real feel for the characters beyond the basics. They seem like an average family that decides to try and become self sufficient. They get their neighbors, who are also their best friends, to join them in their plan. The story ends with a setup for the series.
I can't say enough great things about this author and the series! I read this genre a lot and this is by far, my favorite series. If you are a fellow lady prepper or just interested in the concept, you too will love it. I wish I could join this group when the SHTF ☺
This is the story of how Anne and Russ became preppers. Although it is a prequel, it is the last book in the series of people surviving an EMP. As usual Glaspy has written well developed characters and obvious researched facts. This series is so good that I finished all four blocks in four days. My only complaint is I would love to have at least four more. I just can’t seem to get enough of these characters and their experience.
To a degree, I enjoyed this 32 pg intro that re-states all the right reasons for "prepping" against hard times.
I was disappointed at the number of undefined acronyms in the story [tho, I was able to Google]: EMP [Electro Magnetic Pulse] CME [Coronal Mass Ejection] SHTF [Shit Hits The Fan] TEOTWAWKI [The End Of The World As We Know It].
I'm less likely to continue this "Powerless World" series as I think the topic is already well-covered in the TV show "Revolution" and the NY Times Bestsellers by William R. Forstchen beginning with "One Second After".
If you enjoy When the Power Is Gone, I also recommend this prequel short story. The story feels like chapters that were cut from the first book to preserve the narrative flow. Despite that, it gives some good background on how Anne and her husband became doomsday preppers.
A short, but well written prequel that makes me want to read more of this story. I particularly like that the main character is a woman for a change as well as starting off with a mindset towards prepping that I believe is probably more realistic than that which is portrayed in most other books in this genre. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
This is an unusual short introduction to a series. Anne lives a very average life until her husband introduces her to the world of prepping. We watch the transition from living in the moment to a more self-sufficient lifestyle with plans in place for any number of disasters. The book is about the journey a small group of friends take in their quest to prep for any possible SHTF scenario. It’s written almost as if Anne, the narrator, is talking to the reader and that brings you into her world via her thoughts. I’m interested to know what the book is a prequel to.
A must read for people who enjoy preparedness books! Wonderfully written with details about each character that make you feel like you're in the story living it with the books characters!
Loved this book! I couldn't put it down. Definitely a great preview and has me itching to get my hands on the Powerless World series to see what happens to make the power go out, and what happens after it does. The characters were well developed and the descriptions painted a wonderful picture for me, making me feel like I was there.
To my Facebook friends and family, I will make a one time offer. Right now this book was a free download...
If it goes back to a for sale book, and you are not currently any form of prepper... Prove to me you bought and read this book, and I will reimburse you for your copy. That's right, I'll pay you back for reading this book.
Forget TV, Forget Doomsday Preppers, if you have ever considered prepping but thought it was just for other people...you need to read this book. Some people have never lost power due to snow or ice, but those who have know the value of having backups. This book really is a good introduction to prepping and makes the case for doing it. It is the prequel to two book series...at the time of this writing. I'm hoping for more books soon.
This is a necessary prequel to the Powerless World series. It sets the readers mind and launches the reader on the exciting adventure in this series. The author is one of my favorite apocalyptic writers and I'm looking for many more great books. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
This is 39 pages long, but rather than saying what a little value of a book it is, let's concentrate on the message in these pages. If the message causes someone to plan how to survive a disaster, then this is the cheapest item you will ever buy.
Yes, I'm still on the fence, but after reading this, the whole prep notion sounds a little less crazy. A week or two without power, and people will insist on you sharing what you have. A month, and they will just take it, if they last that long without water. Preparing to survive without modern crutches...money, internet, transportation...makes sense.
This is a great beginning and I suspect new series. This author always has great stories that are loaded with great information and obviously is going to be a great series based on how the characters were developed and the potential scenario. An excellent read!!
This author makes certain that this book (and others) are an easy word with the difficulty to put it down!
This was extremely short and apparently meant to be a prequel to a series that I really like (Powerless World). Unfortunately, I don't see that this really added to the series at all. It is primarily a discussion of and evolution towards preparedness which was mildly interesting. It really did not augment the story enough to make it a necessary read. That being said, I may re-read the Powerless World series which is a good one.
I read this prequel when it first came out and just re-read it. Here in the beginning of 2024 it feels more like a primer on prepping than ever before. How, why, what, who all the questions are answered in an oblique way.. It is very well put together and brings this family into our reality.
Realistic and Real. Meaning the author reached her goal of people who weren't accountants one day and Jason Bourne the next. And intelligent ways of building up supplies and education against possible events that could occur. Well done!
Are you prepared for the end of the world as we know it?
This book contains a lot of information should we ever experience a catastrophic event. Lots to think about. Not many of us would be this prepared, and we should be.
Wow! Interesting to find out there are actually people preparing for a catastrophe. I am beginning to seriously consider how an event like this could be right around the corner.
I like this. A welcome to how we became a tin foil hat person. This author is different from others as it starts with mindless non-preppers and transforms them.
