David Garrison, author of A Wind in the House of Islam writes: Stubborn Perseverance isn't just a manual, it's a record of the inner workings of a real church-planting movement that invites readers to join the exciting adventure of launching such movements. Why Stubborn Perseverance?
Many laborers, along with their prayer and support teams, labor without the vision and guidance to effectively pursue God for a movement.
Stubborn Perseverance presents, in an enjoyable story format, a distillation of best practices from several different streams of movements, providing: a unique, inside look at how movements develop, and practical steps for seeking God with others for a movement in your own context.
Based on actual events, Stubborn Perseverance walks readers step by step through the principles and practices by which many around the world are now collaborating with the Holy Spirit to launch movements. To apply this manual for maximum fruitfulness, find a mentor with movement experience and gather others to read and adapt Stubborn Perseverance to your own context. What are others saying about Stubborn Perseverance? I've read Contagious Disciple-Making, Miraculous Movements, and Wind in the House of Islam. And I've trained in Any-3 and Camel Method (all great!). Stubborn Perseverance distills them into the manual I want for our team. -K.D., field team leader in SE Asia Other movement materials left me confused and overwhelmed. They sounded good in principle, but I had no idea how to proceed on my own or explain the concepts to others. Stubborn Perseverance solves all of that. -Don Vincent, correctional officer pursuing a movement in a prison
Stubborn Perseverance is now my #1 training tool for church-planting movements! The story both explains and illustrates the essential steps of multiplying disciples to launch such a movement. -John Becker, International Coordinator for Vision 5:9, Director of Ministries for AIM International
Stubborn Perseverance is a well-crafted story revealing the revolutionary principles of multiplicative disciple making. The story is inspiring and the questions following each chapter are a team training treasure trove. The best book I’ve read thus far in regard to engaging Muslim unreached people groups. I have already used practices from this book in my day to day life and new relationships. It also has pushed me to actually count the costs on what it takes to be a follower of Jesus and has stirred affections in my heart to love the Word of God more and more. I will not take for granted the fact that I can read the Bible any time after reading this book. Thank You, God, for teaching me through these brothers and sisters and their faithfulness to You!
James Nyman is a trainer and practitioner working with contextualized models for sharing Jesus in Muslim contexts. This is a training manual he created that follows the story of a movement that began in a southeast asian context that is loosely based on his own experience.
This book casts a compelling picture of how a contextualized house church movement would begin and began to grow. Knowing that these stories are based on real life people is amazing.
The book is pushed down to 3 stars only for its stilted narrative and the way it tries to hard to blend teaching with narrative (leading to long monologues by the characters trying to get across cpm concepts). But for the purposes of training, i can see the value. So perhaps if you come in knowing that's what you are in for that bumps it up to 4 stars because the content is solid.
So this is one of those 3 star books I would recommend anyone read who is interested in contextualized cpm in muslim contexts.
This is a well-written, easy to read book. The chapters are very short. It has a lot of great principles woven into story format. I appreciate that he uses different disciple making movement ideas, rather than just promoting one. I love all the resources in the back. I highly recommend this book.
Nyman puts forth a church planting movement that relies upon contextual tools and the rapid spread of house churches. Though filled with the best intentions, I fear Nyman’s narratives display church growth practices that are unable to establish long-lasting foundations for genuine disciple-making. It is pragmatism over faithfulness.
Enjoyed reading this instructional account of how God can move in ppl groups. Thinking now how to apply this material to my American friends who have rejected Christianity but who have never explored Jesus and his goodness.
One of the better books that provides real stories of DMM/CPM on the field. While also incorporating coaching and guidance of how to apply these Church Planting Movement principles.
