Tony Buzan was an English author, educational consultant, and pioneer of the mind mapping technique, which he developed to enhance learning, creativity, and memory. Born in Middlesex in 1942, he studied psychology, English, mathematics, and science at the University of British Columbia and later became a graduate student at Simon Fraser University, where he served as the inaugural president of the student society. Buzan was a strong advocate for mental literacy and radiant thinking, drawing inspiration from figures like Leonardo da Vinci and Albert Einstein. He authored or co-authored over 80 books, including the bestselling Use Your Head, The Mind Map Book, and The Speed Reading Book, and gained international recognition through his 1970s BBC series Use Your Head. Buzan co-founded the World Memory Championships, the Mind Sports Olympiad, and the Brain Trust Charity. His legacy lives on through his books, seminars, and iMindMap software.
I have no doubt that mind maps are an interesting and often useful tool to make plans, collect thoughts, share ideas. But unfortunately, there were too many pages telling me as a reader how fantastic mind maps are and how many different situations I can use them in, a lot fewer actually explaining what a mind map was and almost no material on WHY they're so effective in the first place.
It's as if the writer, Tony Buzan, assumes that if you bought this book, you're already sold on the idea of mind maps, and so now that he has your attention, he'll just keep re-emphasizing how wonderful they are.
This was a patronizing, repetitive read that gravely lacked in depth. I wouldn't recommend it, except maybe as a paper weight.
The book I read to research this post was Mind Maps At Work by Tony Buzan which is a very good book which I bought from kindle. This book is mainly about the benefits of mind mapping and how it can save you time. If you do a search in Google there were 6 million results according to Tony although that's probably much higher now. Mind mapping is more than a learning tool for things like books although that's one application. It can be used to structure your day or for goal setting. In the Gulf area they use it to plan new cities. I assume that's the Gulf of Mexico. Bosses of companies can use it to prioritize their time and see how they're going a certain profit. Many companies use mind maps in meetings. Tony is in the Guiness Book of Records as the most creative person in the world. One of his ideas was for teachers to have teaching assistants. I know when I was at school that was unheard of. One thing he says in the book is you must step out of your comfort zone and see things from a different perspective. If you normally read a certain newspaper you should try a completely different one from time to time. You should try different cuisine to what you're used to. If you normally lounge on the beach on holiday you should try skiing or snow boarding. You should also read books you wouldn't normally read.
I've decided I like Mind Maps, and I've downloaded some software to help make them. I enjoy putting them together and find them useful.
So I wanted to like this book. But it's just not very good. It's full of anecdotes of no general value, and it includes many testimonials about how mind maps have changed someone's life, but there aren't a lot of examples of how to make them productively. There could have been a lot more discussion about different ways to branch a mind map and the utility of each approach, but there wasn't.
It had a few tidbits of useful info, but they were pretty sparse and none of them were impressive.
I can tell you that unless you're highly creative, slightly head-in-the-clouds type of person, this is probably not the book for you.
Can you imagine a negotiating group of men in a serious work environment play with colors and draw little figurines on the paper, and share them within themselves to ultimately see that you've reached similar ideas?
Can you imagine any person who heavily dislikes doodling or "childishness" to make mind maps and present them to other people in a meeting?
I can't.
Let me be clear, mind maps do work when you apply them, but in my opinion it should be something that you use for yourself and memorize them, which then works to your advantage, because colors and shapes do improve cognitive performance, but it shouldn't be and isn't "be all end all" recipe for business success because mind maps are made to be entirely personal.
The book suggests even skipping the drawing part at times, but making them in your head as you're in the middle of a conflicting situation. It suggests things like:"...visualize a happy customer/boss in the middle..."I don't think I've met anyone who actively does that in the moment while their boss or coworker is yelling at them.
That being said, mind maps are fabulous for studying, creative writing, organizing things, determining your weaknesses and strengths, and discerning important information from something that isn't so relevant...to name the few.
No doubt that Mind mapping is a good way to improve our performance in our life. However, I felt some boring to follow the ideas and the examples of this book.
I didn't enjoy this book at all. The author basically keeps on repeating the same things over 8 chapters. I guess the point was clear in the first chapter itself.
I read this before I read "Mind Maps" and now that I have read the first book, I think I would have gotten more out of this one. Still, some worthwhile principles of how to apply radiant thinking to the workplace, for brainstorming, taking notes, or simply remembering your weekly "to do" list.
Always amazed with Tony Buzan since I also practised his methods quite a while. Reading this book to freshen my brain on mind maps. Luckily I have this book during Goodreads book swap in Bogor 2 months ago.
Well! well! well! A good management book on how to get things done and still play. I have been introduced to mind-mapping which I am now exploring aggressively. So far so good!
Makes certain assumptions about reader's knowledge. Steps beyond the mapping process at times - maybe to fill pages?. Overall, didn't find this very helpful.
