The Bachelors

Rate this book
It is a well-known fact that a single man without a penny to his name must be in want of a rich wife.
Darcy, Bingham and Wick Austen are about to lose the family business.
Without a miracle or a substantial cash investment, Austen's - the bookstore chain that was established by their great-great grandfather - will go into receivership.
A chance encounter at a charity ball with the attractive, single and filthy-rich Bennet sisters has Wick Austen convincing his brothers that the way to save their livelihoods rests at the Bennet's red-soled-shoe clad feet.
But these three women are far more than your average, simpering, society-loving heiresses.

Darcy isn't so sure about his youngest brother's plan, especially when the smart, feisty and ridiculously sexy Eliza Bennet shoots down his advances in a ball of flames, and accuses him of being a proud and egotistical jerk.
Meanwhile, Bingham meets the sweet and approachable Jane, and insta-love ensues, and Wick gets used up and spat out by the youngest and most flighty sister, Lydia.
Will the Austen bachelors secure a wife and save the family name or will they become the Bennet sister's latest conquests?

*Inspired by Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, The Bachelors is a contemporary twist with added naughtiness*

USA Today Bestselling Author, ES Carter, lives in Cardiff, South Wales. The home of castles, dragons and folklore.
Her family joke that she was born with a book in her hand, and the urge to write stories soon followed.
At eleven, she won her school's literary prize. At ages fourteen to sixteen - her poetry phase after falling in love with Dylan Thomas and e.e. cummings - she had a few poems published, but life, love and family overtook her dreams, and she was in her thirties when she began the scary journey of self-publishing.
Her debut and internationally best-selling series, 'Love by Numbers', are a set of interconnected stand alone romances, all with varying themes of love. From second-chance to romantic comedy and M/M romance. These stories do not need to be read in order, in fact, she is often guilty of advising readers to start at the last book and work their way back through.
Contemporary romance is not the only genre she writes, her second series, 'The Red Order', is as dark and twisted as you can get, but there is beauty there too if you can open your eyes and look.

This book started out so promising: a light and fun romp and quite a fresh take on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice with the genders swapped and the tables turned. It is the Bennet sisters who roll in cold, hard cash, while brothers Darcy, Bing and Wick have financial difficulties and embarrassing parents.

The characterisation was a bit muddled from the beginning to my liking: the author tried to turn Darcy into a male Elizabeth Bennet while also retaining some of his "usual" character traits and vice versa. The result was a bit messy.
Also our Elizabeth-turned-into-a-female-Darcy was presented to both Darcy and the reader as a total cow, and it was difficult to believe that Darcy-turned-into-a-male-Elizabeth was attracted to her right from the start (or even later).
Still I was willing to give their unconvincing attraction a benefit of the doubt and quite enjoyed it all into 40% of the story.

From there on things took a nosedive. The narrative just turned into an overindulgence in vulgarity. Apparently all secondary characters were thrown in so that Elizabeth and her best buddie, Pemberly (no kidding), Lydia and Collins could cuss each other and everyone else around them to their hearts' content with the most obscene language imaginable. Apparently they all had a difficult childhood, poor rich kids and stuff, so they are entitled to do so -yeah, yeah, just whom are we bullshitting here?
Of course (?) Darcy-Elizabeth didn't bat an eyelid and found all the filth and muck his ladylove threw at him utterly irresistible and hilarious. *SIGH*

I made myself finish the book, but it all left a bad taste in my mouth.

Apart from the obscene language, there are some very heavy innuendos and some more or less explicit sex scenes.

I don't really recommend it to Pride and Prejudice fans or readers who like their JA FanFic nice and clean.

The Austen family owned a bookstore business for generations, but modern method of reading was slowly killing their company. The brothers Darcy, Bing and Wick all had their own thoughts on how to get out of the predicament. When opportunity presented itself, the youngest brother Wick devised a plan that he thought would bring the family business back to the glory days.

The Bennet sisters Eliza, Jane and Lydia were not only known for their beauty but also their immense wealth. As the oldest, Eliza worked hard to keep the family legacy. But attention from the Austen brothers had each of the sister flustered one way or another and they had to decide on listening to their heads or hearts.

I don't read a lot classics because the language can be tedious. But I certainly won't shy away from modern reinterpretation like this book which was inspired by Pride and Prejudice.

Being the first woman to head The Bennet Group didn’t help. The board members weren’t just waiting for her to go up in flames, they had their marshmallows already on sticks to toast on her pyre.

There are six main characters in the book and each one of them brought their own set of personality to the table. However, I feel because of the high number, the characters didn't get enough individual spotlight shone on them. My favorite is Eliza who I could relate to the most. Actually, Pemberley was very entertaining too lol!

This book had a light, amusing vibe which I enjoyed. I also like the dynamics between the character especially the sibling comradery and rivalry. I do wish a little more sexiness though, because personally I need more motivation when it comes to light stories haha!

The Bachelors is a story of family connections and personal ambitions. It would appeal to readers looking for light hearted stories.

P.S.: I tend to read with British when a book is very British lol!

This is a really different re-interpretation of Pride and Prejudice. Actually, it's a story inspired by Jane Austen's book but doesn't pretend to be a straightforward variation.

For one thing, it's a modernization. There's also some gender reversal, as Darcy, Bing and Wick Austen are not nearly as well off as the filthy rich Bennet sisters, whose parents are deceased. In fact, Austen's Book Stores, the family company now run by the brothers, is on the brink of bankruptcy. The young men's parents, Claude and Anne Austen, are clearly modeled after the personalities of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet; Mrs. Austen is a spendthrift and is eager for her boys to marry while Mr. Austen either avoids his wife or makes fun of her. Wick Austen is his mother's favorite and is virtually useless as far as running the company is concerned, but it's his plan to save it that launches the plot on its merry way.

As for the Bennets in this book, Eliza is the eldest and, after her father's death, has taken his place as the head of The Bennet Group, a very large and successful corporation. Jane is more involved in the charitable foundation their mother started and loves interacting with people. Lydia is a Paris Hilton-type, only a bit more scandal-prone.

Interestingly, Pemberley is not a place. Instead, it's the first name of Eliza's best friend and trusted confidante, Pemberley Gardiner. Ms. Gardiner also happens to be a famous actress unhappily wed to the scumbag Collins Forster.

As you might expect, Eliza and Darcy get off to a rocky start when she disses him to her sister Jane within his earshot before she even meets him. He dubs her an ice princess.

The rest of the plot weaves some identifiable parallels to P&P into a story that is quite different and, most of the time, unpredictable. However, the pairings are probably too obvious, even before characters are in the same room together. That's really my only criticism. I like the flow of the writing and the story itself. It's a fairly light-hearted read that feels fresh and original.

Content is for mature adults. A homosexual character makes unwelcome advances to a man, the F-bomb is dropped once or twice, and, while sex isn't explicitly described, there are numerous overtly sexual situations.

I liked the style, but found it a bit much as it went on. I also wasn't so happy about all of the slut shaming that takes place.

I enjoyed The Bachelors so much I was sad to turn the last page...I know this is a standalone but please Mrs. Carter give me more of these characters.

I particularly liked the writing, the flow and I find refreshing to read something in the GB English once in a while.

I won't ruin the book for you all retelling it,I just want to tell you the Austen brothers meet their female counterpart and the story that comes out is witty and sparkling and you can't miss it.

A wonderful twist on my favourite book of all time, “Pride and Prejudice”. We follow the Austen Brothers, owners of a slowly dying book empire as they try to keep their heads above water with the growing trend for ebooks. Younger brother Wick comes up with a plan to seduce the rich and powerful Bennet sisters with hilarious consequences. I loved ES Carter’s take on this classic novel, so much so that I did not put my kindle down (the irony is not lost on me). I loved how she mixed up places, names and friendships, and I loved the multiple POV, it worked perfectly. A must read for fans of the original that is a complete and utter standalone, and no, you don't have to have read Pride and Prejudice to appreciate the story and Carter’s humour, but knowing the original characters made the experience so much better in my eyes. A full five star read for me. I was hooked. I received an advanced copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

What are your favorite tropes? Marriage for Hire? Enemies to Lovers? Insta-Love? How about your H/h? Need a Billionaire? A pauper in need of saving the family 'farm'? The wallflower that is forever overlooked? Now take your trope, add your characters, mix in some cheeky British humor, and maybe have the author flip all the expectations on their heads and cook it up for a serving of --

The Bachelors!

Yes, it's the story that takes our most favorite tropes and with tongue in cheek spins a delightful contemporary journey for the reader to find your other half. As the saying goes, everybody needs somebody. Each one of the main characters have found their 'perfect' somebody - whether they care to admit it or not. But it goes without saying that secondary characters can make or break a fantastic read. Ms Carter offers up some of the best with family and friends joining the frey of who gets the mark in the win column. Besides the comedic elements, you've got the perfect romance with 'fade to black' that you'll find you can recommend to the most prudish of friends - but still feel that sizzle.

Worried because 3rd person isn't your thing? Eli Carter nails the writing and intertwining of each characters story that keeps you engaged that you don't realize you've reached The End . Concerned with another 'British' book? If you can watch Notting Hill, you'll clutch your eReader to prevent it from slipping with all the giggling that will ensue. And for this reader, it ended on the perfect note. Brilliant and satisfying conclusion --- for now.

This is definitely one to show up on my eReader when I want to just have fun with the story for re-read over and over again. 5+ out of 5 stars and personal favorite.

So, wait...you know I'm a huge Austen fan. Yet, not one peep. How about you read my thoughts on that aspect in my blog - My Own Bookshelves - for release day. In all seriousness, you do not need to nor be a fan of the classic to enjoy this fun and wicked ride.

It wasn't what I expected. I thought it was a new version of Pride and Prejudice but in fact, it was INSPIRED by Jane Austen and her story. I don't know why I thought otherwise...

Anyway, even if Eli doesn't usually write in the third person, she did it well here! I was glad to read a new book from her, I really enjoy her style. I'm more into her dark books but her romances are always so nice to read. That's the case with this book.
But I wanted more. I think it was too short to really explore all the relationships and it was my little deception. I wanted more of Darcy et Eliza, more of Wick and Lydia too because they're really unique. I loved Bing and Jane too. I think each couple deserved a book.

As you can see, I loved all the characters (I had a little problem with Eliza at the beginning because I couldn't help, she made me think of Downton Abbey's Mary...), I loved all the little things related to Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice that Eli added in her story... I really enjoyed this book and it can be read even if you don't know Price and Prejudice so you should try it, you'll probably have a good time!

This was such a fun read. I love Jane Austen, and I really love what Carter did with Pride and Prejudice--more than a retelling, more than simply "flipping the script," this is a modern re-envisioning, with a deep respect for Austen and clear understanding of her style, settings, and themes. It's funny and sweet, and very well written, with some lines that just swirl off the page like magic.

And that cover is gorge!

I'm honored and voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this beautiful book.

The Bachelors was my very first book by E.S. Carter and I'm totally in awe! Eli managed to grab my attention from the first page on. And even though I'm not a fan of books written in 3rd person, Eli showed me otherwise. I never felt closer to characters written from the 3rd POV than to the three Bennet Sisters and the three Austen brothers.

The writing style is captivating and I never got bored once. The Bachelors is a funny and light-hearted story with charming and witty characters, it made me smile and laugh throughout the whole book.
It was so clearly written with a constant pace and the change of character focus was flawless. I always knew on which main character we are concentrating on.
I loved how Eli worked out each character and outlined the parallels between the parings: Wick and Lydia (young, carefree, wild, self-centered), Jane and Bing (sensible, cautious, caring, soft-hearted), Eliza and Darcy (confident, responsible, feisty, reserved).
You can't help but laugh about the mess Wick gets himself into with Lydia, nor can you deny the insta-love/insta-attraction between Jane and Bing (it just made me sigh every time over and over again). You also can't help yourself feeling the need to push Eliza and Dary's heads together, to finally see what clearly is between both of them because they are too stubborn.

This book made my feel at ease and gave me a happy mood. I can totally picture this book as a movie.

The only thing why I can't give 5 stars is the fact that all felt a little rushed (but not in a bad way!). Every character and therefore pairing has high potential for their own books. I wished I could have known more about each of them and how it really will work out in the end. As the ending of the book might look like a happy ending, but to me it's clearly an open ending (without cliffhanger). I wish for three more books (at least): One where we will see how Lydia and Wick really fall in love and work out the mess they created. One where we will see Jane and Bing getting married and parents. One where we get Eliza's and Darcy's story, because they are clearly not finished yet! I also want to know how the Bennet sisters find their way back together. And if there is still time for a fourth book, I want to hear Pemps story!
Well, Eli: Way to go here ;-)

I was never a massive fan of Austen (ssshhhh - don't tell anyone, they will disown me!) after attempting to read Sense and Sensibility in my youth I wrote her off, and its only in the past year that I actually read Pride and Prejudice and enjoyed it. The premise of a modern day twist inspired by a classic, where the women hold all the cards appealed to me and I wasn't disappointed.

The Austen Brothers: Darcy, Bing and Wick are down on their luck and looking for a way to save the family business, Wick has a plan that is somewhat unconventional.

The Bennet sisters: Eliza, Jane and Lydia, run their successful family business, and are still coming to terms with the loss of their father.

When the Austen Brothers meet the Bennet sisters prepare for anything!

This book has everything - smart, witty banter, sweet heartfelt old fashioned romance and woven through it all is a sharp humour that will make you laugh out loud, it is the whole package.

If you are a fan of the original you will love this spin, and all the cheeky references. However, this will still appeal to those who have never read the original as it stands alone as a well written contemporary romance.

I was so swept away in the story the book went too fast. I highly recommend it to all!

The Bachelors by ES Carter is absolutely phenomenal!!! Carter completely exceeded all of my expectations, and once again showed me that she is a master wordsmith.

If you are a fan of Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen you definitely want to grab this book immediately. I'm talking run, don't walk to get it into your hands!

Carter brought very distinctive characters to life and intertwined their lives in such a way that as a reader you felt you were actually a part of the storyline.

And have mercy, her humor and wit shine throughout the book. I laughed so hard I snorted more than once!

So get ready to meet not only the handsome and charming (most of the time) Austen brothers: Wick, Darcy, and Bing, but also the lovely and sassy Bennnet sisters: Eliza, Lydia, and Jane.

Absolute perfection!

ES Carter's twist on Pride and Prejudice is brilliant! A funny, romantic tale with great characters, whose names reflect the original story.
I love how she writes, it’s like I can actually hear them talking.

I really enjoyed this role reversal. Though it was not a complete reversal. Sometimes I felt that Darcy and Lize's charters were not completely the opposite (like Elizabeth was still part her from Cannon but then also part Darcy from Cannon). I did really enjoy the story. my biggest issues was the abrupt ending. Almost nothing was resolved and there was no epilogue. So what happened? I mean, really?

As far as a modern interpretation goes, this was highly enjoyable semi-predictable though non-cannon read. But, I felt that it could have been any book. The similarities to P&P seems to be picked at random like names etc. but the characters were not really the same except Lydia. All in all it was an enjoyable modern read. But do not expect the plot to be anything like cannon but in a modern version. Also, there are sexual innuendos and descriptions but not graphic love scenes. Definitely mature readers.

He knew her.
His heart knew her.
His body craved her, and his mind called for her.
He didn’t have it bad. He had it good.

I wanted to start writing this review the MOMENT I finished reading The Bachelors by E.S. Carter, except I knew I should wait. I needed to wait to get my fangirl under control, so I could be as coherent and persuasive as possible.

Because, you guys, you must read this book.

A twist on Jane Austen’s classic, Pride and Prejudice, The Bachelors is simply wonderful. An instant classic, IMHO. It’s smart and witty, and takes the refined feel of Austen and melds it perfectly with modern sensibilities, delightful humor and cutting commentary.

There is so, so much to recommend this book, and not a single page failed completely and utterly charm me. The way this author changed and twisted and molded the foundational story—the classic love of Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy—into something new yet familiar, unique but comforting is just . . .

. . . it’s awe-worthy.

For me, it’s hard to say exactly what I loved most. Maybe the biting banter of Eliza and Darcy. Or the wicked games of Lydia and Wick. But probably—almost certainly—the joyous connection shared by Jane and Bing. Oh my god, the feels.

The F. E. E. L. S. I’m one corset away from swooning and simpering and making love to you all. ← That might be an ill-remembered quote from some BBC version of Austen or another, but whatever. You know what I mean, right?

If you don’t, then there’s a remedy. Get The Bachelors. Whether you love Austen or not—or are even completely indifferent—there is something so incandescent about this book, it won’t matter. Because, as I’ve been struggling in vain to relate, this book is a must read.

“It’s an exquisite ache, a lovely sort of déjà vu. We spoke, and I was overwhelmed by the sensation that we’d been here before.”

~ SIX STARS ~

My most read and watched book / tv series is without any doubt Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. My paperback is almost falling apart and the DVD’s from the BBC series are slightly damaged. When E.S. Carter announced she was going to write a modern version of my beloved book I was very curious. The Bachelors turns out to be a very entertaining book; full of great characters, crazy antics and love.
“She pulled back and looked at him through heavy eyelids. “Now you owe me a drink.” “And then?” “Then you can show me how you worship a queen.”

The Austen brothers – Darcy, Bingham and Wick – are hardworking guys, but their family business is only months away from bankruptcy. It’s not because they don’t try hard enough, but people buy less books nowadays and their mother just can’t stop spending money. The opportunist one of the brothers, Wick, comes up with the plan to seduce the Bennett sisters. One of them, all of them, he doesn’t care, as long as the family bookstores are rescued. Eliza, Jane and Lydia don’t make it easy for the men, but they do find themselves attracted to the brothers.
“I want you. I want us to work together and build something stronger than love.” “Stronger than love? And what, pray tell, do you think I want more than that?” “Power.”

The Bachelors isn’t like any other book by E.S. Carter. While you see her writing style throughout the story, the third-person POV makes it a bit different. You don’t see the actual thoughts of the characters, but given the number of people it couldn’t have been written in different way without getting too much. Because of the number of POV’s a lot is left to the reader’s own imagination, and I love it for a change.

I love The Bachelors. As a huge fan of Pride & Prejudice I adore all the references and similarities to the original book. My favorite couple should be Darcy and Eliza, but the crazy antics of Wick and Lydia make me laugh out loud. They’re inappropriate, scheming and in your face, but I just love these trouble-kids. Darcy and Eliza, and Bing and Jane are great couples too in their own way, but they’re far more normal then the youngest pair.
“He knew her. His heart knew her. His body craved her, and his mind called for her. He didn’t have it bad. He had it good.”

I adore The Bachelors, I give the story of the Austen brothers and the Bennett sisters 5 stars.

I admit I'm hesitant with books inspired by an all time favorite of mine, Pride and Prejudice, it can be tricky. With the blurb of this it tells me it's very much different in way, more modern and the names just that inspired by. Even if the opposite names and characteristics did jostle me in the start, if I forget it was P&P based it went better. I was still intrigued though and it was pretty unique. I appreciated that it was in British English actually it gave the feel and tone right away.

It's basically the same concept with one party being rich and the other struggling. Here the Austen's are the ones on hard times and the Bennett's a rich. Aside from my initial confusion I found it had the same flair and banter in a modern setting. They are very much amusing and charming which was entertaining. I can see the parallels as well as counterpart in each pairing and it made sense. I enjoyed all the references and little things. Of course Eliza and Darcy has the same get together already guys.

I do really like ES Carter's writing it has ease and wit, even here written in third person it still works. I loved the characters and I wished they were more fleshed out. They definitely had the potential and could have more spotlight. They totally deserve their own books even if I know this is a standalone. Though it has happy for now ending you know it could be more which leaves me hopeful.

The Bachelors is a fun, light hearted and humorous modern inspired take that fans of the original will find entertaining!

The Bachelors is a -modern- story inspired by Pride and Prejudice. Before anything I must admit I haven't read P&P *Hides* so I feel I enjoyed a little different from the fans.

This was a fun story about 3 brothers and 3 sisters, each of them with different goals and different point of view of life.

The Austen brothers are looking for something to save their family business, even when not all want the same but it's family business. In desperate time comes desperate mesures: Find someone with money.

The Bennett's sisters are dealing with the recently lost of their father and Eliza, the oldest is dealing with a little more, be the head of the multimillion family business and with a rebel sisters that only looks for way to bother her sisters.

When the 3 brothers and 3 sisters met, it's all kind of reactions that leads them all to new adventures where all of them discover their real intentions toward each other.
Add to this adventure a pair of parents that see their situation so different that sometimes you don't know if laugh or be annoyed.

I loved all the siblings but my favorites were Bing and Jane, because they were so "out of the drama" and the more neutrals of the situation.

It was an story I didn't know what to expect, because all I knew about it, was that it was inspired in P&P, so I was curious about it, Right now I need to start P&P and if it's something like this I know I am gonna love it.

ES Carter knows how to write a "re-make" of one of everyone's favorite book, this is not the same story, it's a modern story inspired in the classic, and yes, it's so "our times", now the roles are inverted. You need to read it to find out what I am talking about.
Don't be afraid to read this one, you will spend a great time reading about their adventures to save their family companies and maybe find love while you remember one of your favorite books (Because I Know P&P is a favorite of everyone).

The Bachelors is a really fun and witty take on Pride & Prejudice, one of my favorite books of all time.
The three Austen brothers need a way to save their failing book store. Wick Austen thinks that the Bennet sisters just might be the answer that they are looking for.

“All that I have is yours,” he whispered across her lips. “If I make you my queen, you will make me a king.”

But the Bennet sisters are no door mats. They are some fierce females! They are each in their own way, a force to be reckoned with.

“Don’t worry, dear sister,” she said sweetly, reaching out her hand to lay it comfortingly on Jane’s arm. “Playing music is like having sex. You never forget where your fingers go or where to put your mouth.”

I just adored this story and these characters! My only complaint is that I want so much more! I didn’t want this story to end. I closed the book and immediately started dreaming up my own little stories peopled with these Austens & Bennets!

“I own you, husband.” Lydia’s lips tipped up into a sly grin. “I own this.” She cupped his cock. “And I will own your business.” She squeezed her hand just enough to gain a hiss from Wick’s lips.”
...

“Rearrange yourself, love,” she smirked at his erection as the door began to open. “Your subservience is showing.”

ES Carter can certainly tell a story. Even when she's putting a modern twist on an old story.
I love Pride and Prejudice. Book, film, TV series, been there done that.... then there's this story.
I love all of the characters. I love the premise of the story. It's funny, emotional and very British!
The reason for four and not five stars is I wanted more. It felt a little rushed. I wanted to get to know each family member and experience their story developing at another level.
Don't get me wrong, this was a fun story and I totally recommend it. Would love a further novella maybe for each couple???
I think Darcy and Eliza were my favourite couple and would love to read more about them. The fireworks between them made me chuckle!
Also Pemberly...intriguing!! Totally would love to read more about her! I wonder which A list actress you will picture when you read about her! Not telling you mine but had an image from the first time she is mentioned!!
So to summarise... great book, amazing author, definitely worth reading!!

This is my first book by E.S. Carter and I adored it! I devoured it in practically one sitting. So original and exquisite. So emotional and romantic. So shocking and funny. The three Bennet sisters have met their match in the three Austen boys, just watch the fireworks explode! It wasn’t like anything I’ve ever read before and I loved it!
