This is a gem of a read. Desperate battles against impossible odds, the forging of friendships in the fires of war, even the politics of kingdoms. It has it all. This story of 4 hand picked adventurers descending into the dungeons to fight an evil Necromancer, can stand shoulder to shoulder with the very best fantasy stories. The descriptions of the world and the detail of the characters is exceptional, and the battles they fight both within themselves, and without, are told with an eye for detail. Well worth it.

I struggled between giving this 4 and 5 stars but I settled on 5, not because the book is perfect, destined to be reread year after year, but because it does exactly what I wanted it to do. It wasn’t a tale of mighty armies and clashing kingdoms, all revolving around hundreds of characters. It was a dungeon crawl with a small party of likable characters and a fun story with a satisfying conclusion. A lot of authors try to be too grand in the scale of their stories. John Roberts approached this book with more humble aspirations and I think it the result was great.
OK, so I didn't have any expectations when starting this book, and the main reason I bought it was because I've been playing Dungeon Saga a lot recently, and I wanted to delve a little more into the lore.
I'm so glad I did. This is an excellent read with some really well written characters. The atmosphere is grim and gloomy - as it should be, what with it being overrun with the undead - and the action is suitably horrific and gruesome.
It's not a long book at all but it weaves a fun and involving story that ends satisfactorily, if a little suddenly. I'm not a fan of 'the end?' finales, and this book begs for a sequel we'll most likely never see, and that's a massive shame.
Yes, I recommend this book. If you're looking for a game changer with huge ideals and grand ideas then you won't find it here. What you'll find is a short, personal and tight story with some excellent characters and a whole lot of action.
Hopefully we'll get to see more of this kind of thing from the author!
