Indisputably Doris

Rate this book
Indisputably Doris is the second book in a series of monologues featuring Mrs Doris Copeland of Partridge Mews, atomic housewife, and owner of a rock bun recipe that can make the most secure dentures shudder.
Join her once more as she battles Pandra O’Malley for her position as chairwoman of the WI. Her campaign brings her up against flu, would-be elves, and a bake sale that may just be a cover for more nefarious means.
Told from the perspective of her long-suffering husband 'arold, it's no wonder he spends so much time down The Hare and Horse.

This is the second book in Heathcote’s Doris series, and I loved this one just as much as I loved the last one, if not more so. Here, septuagenarian Doris Copeland faces competition at the local Women’s Institute and her long-suffering husband ‘arold has to support her as she gets into all sorts of unfortunate situations.

Indisputably Doris builds on the previous book but could also be read as a standalone, although I’d recommend reading both books anyway and so you might as well read them in order. The plots of the books might not sound particularly interesting at first glance, but they’re interesting to our Doris and that’s all you need. The joy of these books comes from watching how she tries to get her way through the cynical eyes of our ‘arold.

Charlie has a great sense of humour, and he uses it like some sort of evil villain with a superpower here. The result is a book that I didn’t want to end and which did a great job of keeping my spirits high when life was stressing me out. There’s just something comforting about these books, and that’s probably the way that Heathcote is inspired by old comedies like Keeping Up Appearances. It’s feel-good, laugh out loud funny and just a pleasure to read. I definitely recommend this one, especially if you want to support an indie author. Great work, Mr. Heathcote.

Another 4.5 read for me. This book is just as much fun as the first book. I loved that this book really allowed the reader to connect more with Doris and her family and friends. The plot was just as comedic as the first book as well as being a thicker, juicier plot to follow. I just love Doris and it has been just such a pleasure to read. I really enjoy Heathcote’s writing style and I raced through this book as fast as the first. I would recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of light funny reads. This is the first time I have read humour in a book and it has really resonated with me and made me laugh out loud. Bravo Charles. I am now a super fan of Doris and the clan. This is the second book in the our Doris series and I loved it. I love that in this book we get more of Doris back story and see very different sides to her. Centred around the battle for chairwoman with Pandra O’Malley, we see Doris face other problems such as flu, would be elves and an interesting bake sale. We meet Erin who is a young lady who is a single mum trying to better herself. I love watching the side of Doris where she supports her and really takes her under her wings. Yes I love ‘arold her long suffering husband and as he tells this story we really feel for him and personally I love him more. There are friendships we re visit, new characters and best of all the warm northern sense of dry humour that the author brings to the book. If you need a cosy read then definitely pick this series up and I can’t wait to read the next one.

I received this book as a Giveaway and I enjoyed reading it. It was light and fun, with amusing characters, quirky events and a light narrative style. The book was easy to read and flowed gently through to the end. A great read for those days when you just want to laugh.

Flour on every surface of kitchen: a celiac would’ve died in seconds. All these details make me feel like im not only enjoying time spent w our colorful inhabitants of partridge mews but w author as well. “Mrs Armitage would always be Nerys Butler to them, and they all remembered the summer of 1957 when she had more pine needles in her hair than bobby pins.” Sat nav=gps. Flu jab=flu shot. “It were hot enough to melt a Tory in an icebox.” “You look more sheepish than spring, tell me what you did.” “You’ve always been a few shillings short of a pound but this has got to be the stupidest thing you’ve ever done.” Alf=Mr. Alfred Simpson. “Something wicked" chapt a rousing opus: she wants to throw a pc halloween party so invites a wiccan over to afternoon tea to learn only to discover she’s a tolkienan elf, not a witch. Insert cmas joke here. Thus eventually becomes victim of slander accused of being satan worshipper, tho harold knows the truth is she’s closer to being satan herself. She gets herself out of her jam w a ppt presentation declaring “i am mrs doris copeland of shakespeare ave - i have made many enemies in my time but i have never found an ally in the devil. Ty for coming to this ted talk, mic drop, drive safe!” Tho she can be insidious conservative karen, this is the diff - closer to british septuagenarian lucy ricardo x don corleone than anything else. Carrot cake.

What can I say?
Our Doris arrived in Indisputably Doris.
From reading Doris's first installment it's hard to imagine her character making a bigger impact but believe me she does.
This book is full of humour, heartfelt moments and most importantly good reading!
I felt the book is a modernised Keeping up Appearances with a splash of the Last of the summer wine.
A very clever story that has you relating to the the characters and wanting to read more.
I was truly upset when this book ended however it did end perfectly.
I cannot wait to see what else the author Charles Heathcote has in store for us and Doris.

I liked 'Indisputably Doris', the second installment in the stories of Our Doris. I enjoy Charles Heathcote's YouTube channel and these books are full of his wry humour. It's nice to read stories whose main characters are elderly and where the portrayal is also so warm and funny. If you like old-fashioned comedy, especially Keeping Up Appearances, you might like this series by a fellow indie writer (also his new novella is just out). I liked Our Doris a slightly more, but they're both good. You don't have to read them in order, but I think it's nice to.

Doris Revisited

The further adventures of formidable Doris. I so longed for Doris' Battenburg cake. Doris makes some important discoveries regarding her personal growth and passes on the wisdom of her late Mother-in-law to the ladies of the Women's Institute

Our Doris continues her rampage through Partridge Mews society when her position as Interim Chairwoman of the WI is threatened. This book is chock full of intrigue, carrot cake, and heart-warming moments as 'arold and Doris struggle with her rising profile in the community.

I love Doris and 'arold more with every chapter of this book. They feel real in their everyday turmoil tweaked for maximum comedy. They're already pensioners, but I feel the couple mature in this book as they continue from the events of Our Doris which rekindled something in their marriage. Watching them struggle and support each other is sweet, and heart-warming.

Doris grows as a character alone, too. She's still the upright old lady, but she's a bit more flexible now. This is showcased as she takes on a mentee: a slightly chavvy young mother named Erin. Erin and Doris are a whirlwind together and it's fantastic to see young and old coming together and battling elves (that actually happens, but this book isn't fantasy).

I'm excited to see where this series goes and can't wait for more hijinks and very British luncheons.
