YA Born Vampire #2

Child of the Outcast

Rate this book
**Slow Build Reverse Harem YA Paranormal Romance**
Imprisoned for her crimes, Lisbeth awaits the Council’s order of execution. With Knight—the love of her life—dead, their verdict would be a merciful relief from her crippling anguish.
But mercy is not their intent. Instead, Lisbeth is thrust into a position of power and charged with coordinating an alliance between vampires and Lycans. An alliance that has the fanged community in an uproar.
Little do they know, a storm far more deadly is brewing. There have been murmurings of dissension in the ranks between turned vampires and their Born masters. Can Lisbeth quell their threats of an uprising? Or will the blaze of civil war scorch the land?
Child of the Outcast is a must-read, young adult page-turner written by Elizabeth Dunlap!

As mentioned in the description, this is a slow build reverse harem paranormal romance. You may not see the harem for several books, but don't fret! It's definitely there!
If slow build isn't your thing, that's completely fine! But if you don't mind waiting a little for it, keep reading!

I was given a free copy of this book for an honest review.

Picking up after the deadly consequences of the last book, Lisbeth has been captured by the Hunters and is awaiting punishment for helping the Lycan child. When she is dismissed by the Vampire Council on a technicality, she attempts to reclaim her former life. But there are new dangers ahead for Lisbeth, the turned want more freedom and it's up to Lisbeth to figure out a way to save everyone.

Lisbeth really came into her own in this book. Without giving too much away, she made some decisions and it forced her to take more of an active leadership role. She has so much wit and it's so nice to see her use it.

This journey with the vampires and lycans has been a rollercoaster. I can't wait for more.

My one complaint is the lack of Knight.
I know, I know. As far as Lisbeth and the reader knows, Knight is dead. He can't be in the book. But my goodness, I missed him!
Author Elizabeth Dunlap's world of Born and Turned Vampires is just as intriguing the second time around. Born Vampire Lisbeth is a prisoner in her own home after being arrested for saving a Lycan child. She struggles to survive on bagged blood as she awaits trial, reunites with companions, and seeks solace in the arms of an old friend.
But what is to become of her when she discovers that she is pregnant?
There are elements of this series that, of course, reminds me of Twilight. The lifestyles and histories of certain vampires, the strained relationship between Vampires and Lycans, and of course, the noticeable absence of the dreamy love interest in the second book. But Elizabeth Dunlap puts an entirely new spin on the vampire genre… one that is captivating and magical and, perhaps surprisingly, very human. I can't wait to read the next book!

Once again, Elizabeth Dunlap wrote an amazing and addictive book! Strong characters, strong plot. The cliff hanger at the end drove me a bit crazy but nonetheless I, very much so, enjoyed this book. I cannot wait until the third book!

The story took twists and turns which were unexpected. The story kept you on the edge of your seat. The story was well told and continued where Knight of the Hunted left off. I can't wait for the next one.

I didn't think it was possible, but this was even better than the first book in the series. All of the twists and turns made for a quick, exciting listen. I predicted what happened in the end, but with that crazy cliffhanger, I need to know what happens next. Starting the third book immediately.

Ugh..!!!!

Okay, .. so.. still not a typical reverse harem book. Sure there was a little dilly-dally, but more.. no spoiler, sorry!

.. and of course the book - just had to - end where it did.

... ugh!!

Way to make me go after the next book!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review. As I’ve said before, I always give honest reviews whether people appreciate them or not.

Child of the Outcast is the second story in the Born Vampire series by Elizabeth Dunlap. This story begins with Elisabeth, or Lisbeth, imprisoned for her crimes. Please don’t begin reading the series here, start with Knight of the Hunted (Born Vampire Book 1) so that you have the full introduction to this universe and all the characters in it. I will say that the reason Lisbeth is being imprisoned is because she broke the second most important Vampire law: ANY Lycan found in Vampire territory must be killed immediately. Well, said Lycan was a child that had somehow managed to cross into her territory and she refuses to kill children. Any children.

Lisbeth is a Born Vampire. Yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like. Born Vampires are completely different than turned vampires. You can see in my capitalization or lack thereof that Born Vampires are the more important and are expected to receive more respect than the turned. While the first book is Lisbeth on the run from the vampire hunters that found out she broke their law. The first 4 chapters of this book are about Lisbeth right on the edge of losing her sanity while she’s waiting for her trial. Her personal jailer Arthur, who is also one of the hunters that came after her, is a complete and utter jerk to her during that time. Not only is she being imprisoned and in solitary confinement, her mate was killed in the first book. Or at least that’s what she thinks. So she’s a broken woman on top of everything else.

When I read the title of this book, I initially thought the child of the outcast was Lisbeth since she had no idea who her father was and her mother had never been named. But no, the child is the baby Lisbeth is carrying. Ms. Dunlap has truly written us a roller coaster, paranormal story and series! You never quite know what’s going to happen! She also says very clearly, with asterisks and everything, that this is a “Slow Build Reverse Harem YA Paranormal Romance”. The second I finished this story I had to get over to Amazon immediately and get the next book! This is a wonderful Young Adult series. By the way, the final book in it is up for pre-order. It’s Time of the Ancients: A YA Reverse Harem Paranormal Romance (Born Vampire Book 6). I’ll hopefully have finished reading the others before I get to that one!

I loved this book! The storylines are fast-paced and keep the pages turning. The author introduces new characters and new storylines that are natural extensions of the plot from Knight of the Hunted. I could not put this book down! It was very well-written and I am left wanting more, and waiting for the next installment of the Born Vampire Series.

I actually decided not to finish. I waffled back and forth for about 100 pages then ultimately decided I didn't want to spend any more of my time on this at about 80%. The pacing is so slow in this book, like the first 25% is her being depressed in confinement, and then everything proceeds at a glacial pace after that. But that's not what bothered me most; there were just so many random plot points and inconsistent characters. They made such weird decisions. Like why did Olivier (I think it was Olivier?) bring Lisbeth a random baby bird while she was in confinement? Why was anyone allowed by straight-laced Arthur to interact with her at all? Why didn't he care that she was being visited in the night by an Incubus? Why did an Incubus who loved her mother or somebody decide to sleep with her? Why did she decide to do that herself when she had never shown any inclination for such behavior before? (This might be owing to this being the YA version.) Why did Othello suddenly have power over the Hunters? Why did Lisbeth not immediately go searching for Knight when she was released? Why did she not immediately send out a search party for Othello? Like there were just so many things that made no sense. I could see where the author was going with this and it seemed interesting but it just. wasn't. getting. there.

I was also interested in the way this story addresses class and racism from the dominating class's perspective. On the one hand I really want to see if this "born vampires" class would recognize themselves as the oppressors they are, but on the other hand, the language is really not conducive to any kind of awakening (at one point Lisbeth likened turned vampires to "pigs" which feels uncomfortably familiar). I pushed to read more because I wanted to see how that played out, but I just could not go on with the clunky writing and the rest of the weirdness of the story, which goes on for three more books. I have more books I want to read that I might enjoy more.

This is NOT a Y/A book as stated in the blurb, maybe a N/A, but definitely not younger than say 16, since there is sexual type scenes & swearing. The book held my attention enough to pick up book 3 right away when I finished this one. The book definitely had some flow issues & other things that did take away from the story. The world building is not real well done, and there's a lot of things that aren't clarified or just happen to conveniently. The character development is a bit light, I really wanted more from Lisbeth & Knight. Arthur was a confusing character, that I just couldn't get past his original behavior to get where I like him or could see him as a legitimate part of a RH, not that this even looks like it will end up as a RH as the author states in the blurb - that this is a slow burn RH.

*After the fact -days later after writing this review= I've read books 1-3, and Ugh, I wish I hadn't bothered with this series now!

Child of the Outcast by Elizabeth Dunlap is the second book in A Born Vampire series. This stand alone book begins where the first book Knight of the Hunted ended. Elizabeth has been captured by Arthur the head of the trackers and brought back to the mansion to be tried by the Council. While waiting to be tried Elizabeth is held captive in her room for an extended period of time. This time gives Elizabeth time to deal with what has happened and to decide what her plans for the future (If she has one?) will be. This book was full of suspense and several mysteries that continued to build throughout the entire book. I couldn’t put it down. This is one of the best vampire paranormal romantic suspense books I have ever read. I believe anyone who reads this book will fall in love with the characters in this paranormal world. Child of the Outcast is a suspense filled tale of lost romance.

Lisbeth is returned to her clan and awaits her sentencing. During these months of waiting for the council's decision and believing that Knight is dead, her loneliness drives her to a night of passion with Balthazar. And with not so surprising results. Now Oliver has been kidnapped, the humans and companions have revolted and attacked many of the vampire clan cities. Chaos is everywhere and for safety's sake whatever outside clans remaining are being directed to Lisbeth's clan citadel. Yes a lot is happening and Lisbeth goes into labor at the worst time and in a cliffhanger of an ending! I am loving it!

This is book 2 of the Born Vampire series and this is such a fantastic continuation. Lisbeth a born vampire was captured by her own kind because she saved a lycan child and now she is a prisoner in her own home. Lisbeth thinks that Knight is dead so we don’t get any of that sexy lycan in this book but I bet he shows up in the next one which I’m so looking forward to getting my hands on. There are also new characters introduced in this one which I loved, this is such an excellent series and it’s a 5 plus ⭐️ read and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

I wouldn’t consider this YA but I loved it. The first book in the series is a bit slow. This one is anything but slow! There’s so much going on between her captivity, her crazy and drama that is taking over the house. Truly a wild ride of surprises and some giggles because her crazy goes next level in some places. Completely engaging from start to finish and ends on one heck of a cliffhanger. Drying to dive into the next one. Narrator is quite enjoyable and can’t wait to have a listen to the next one!

Born Vampire Book 2

So good!! I just love this series. Lisbeth is one of my favorite characters. I just kept crying right along with the pages. How could you not? Awaiting sentencing was the longest time of my life it seemed in the pages even though I was pretty sure she would have to survive to be a catalyst. This was amazing, and I cannot wait to start the next one!!

Amazing!

An amazing adventure continues in book 2 of this endearing series. I cried as my heart broke for our heroine and laughed as she sarcastically braved her way through the trials of her complicated life. She's strong and snarky and everything I want in a heroine. The best part is every character in this story is just as well written and developed. Read it. You won't be sorry.

She is ready to accept what ever they will do to her as without Knight she is not interested. She is shocked when they release her but with conditions. What is going on? Now there is also an uprising so how will it go? Follow her as she tries to find her place without Knight

Oh Lisbeth what have you gotten yourself into? This book pulled me straight back into the story. I had so many questions at the beginning of the book....and at the end I now have even more!!! I'm debating what I make of Arthur still. I loved where it ended but I am desperate to know what happens next...

This is a very well written addition to The Born Vampire Series. All the characters are strong with the support of and are supported by a strong plot. The steep cliffhanger has me on the edge of my seat for the next book.

Lisabet is devestated by the loss of Knight, and life just gets more complicated when cosequences of her action come to light. Things are getting dangerous with the Turned, she is forced to take control, and make changes to the Order that are long overdue! I loved that Lisabet has matured and is finally thinking for herself. Book 3 here I come!

Picking up where book one left off she is captured and it’s a devastating blow. No knight and she is imprisioned. Depression sets in and who can help her. It’s a thrilling and captivating read. Not to be missed
