Scientific studies show that the mind/body connection has an extraordinary power to heal. Ageless Body, Timeless Mind goes beyond ancient mind/body wisdom and current anti-aging research to show you do not have to grow old. With the passage of time, you can retain your physical vitality, creativity, memory and self-esteem. Dr Deepak Chopra bases his theories on the ancient Indian science of Ayurveda, according to which, optimum health is about achieving balance physically, emotionally and psychologically, and demonstrates that, contrary to our traditional beliefs about aging, we can use out innate capacity for balance to direct the way our bodies metabolize time and achieve our unbounded potential.
Deepak Chopra, MD serves as the Founder and Chairman of The Chopra Foundation, and Co-Founder of the Chopra Center for Wellbeing.
As a global leader and pioneer in the field of mind-body medicine, Chopra transforms the way the world views physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social wellness. Known as a prolific author of eighty books books with twenty-two New York Times best sellers in both fiction and non-fiction, his works have been published in more than forty-three languages.
Chopra’s medical training is in internal medicine and endocrinology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. Dr. Chopra serves as Co-Founder and Chairman of The Chopra Center for Wellbeing, Founder of The Chopra Well on YouTube, Adjunct Professor of Executive Programs at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Adjunct Professor at Columbia Business School, Columbia University, Assistant Clinical Professor, in the Family and Preventive Medicine Department at the University of California, San Diego, Health Sciences, Faculty at Walt Disney Imagineering, and Senior Scientist with The Gallup Organization.
GlobeIn acknowledges Chopra as "one of top ten most influential spiritual leaders around the world." TIME magazine has described Dr. Chopra as "one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century and credits him as "the poet-prophet of alternative medicine."
“Have you also learned that secret for the river; that there is no such thing as time?” Ageless Body, Timeless Mind: The Quantum Alternative to Growing Old
Not for me. I know so many people who adore Deepak Chopra and I will say he writes in such a magnificent vibrant way.
This book was to long for me and I just wasn't interested enough to stay with it. I did like some of what I read. I consider myself a spiritual person so these types of books are going to appeal to me. But..
It was way to long and some of it was very complicated. Maybe I just did not "get it" which is fine and I will admit reading it felt like a chore.
On the other hand..some parts were fascinating. Had it been condensed maybe I would have appreciated it more.
My favorite part was the Heart Transplant patient who started assuming characteristics of the person whose heart he received. Now that's the stuff I like to read about and I will say I have hear d of things like that happening, not just the one cited in this book.
Philosophical and Spiritual books interest me but this one was to lengthy.
Some people seem to rave about Deepak Chopra. I'm not sure why perhaps I was spoilt by Andrew Weil's book Healthy Aging.
Chopra has much similar to say as Weil and somehow need desperately a good book editor to help him say it. Perhaps the problem is everything has to link to his idea of quantum where he is drawing on quantum physics to bolster his case. "... the mind influences every cell in the body, human aging is fluid and changeable; it can speed up, slow down, stop for a time, and even reverse itself."`
There some very reasonable things and somethings seems extraordinarily shaky. "The deepest reality you are aware of is the one from which you draw your power. For someone who is conscious only of the material world, power is limited to material forces..." OK I find this very reasonable both intellectually, psychologically and even spiritually. In contrast"unbounded intelligence, freedom, and power are inherent in the unified field that Einstein and the ancient sages shared in their vision. Immortality dawns when you realize that you deserve your place in the eternal flow." This seems more anthropocentric and to be honest an unsuccessful attempt to fuse science and spirituality which is like trying to join a solid to a liquid or drink soup with a fork.
Yes the way we think and our emotional lives have an effect of our physical bodies. Yes faith and belief has an effect on us both physically and emotionally. Both Weil and Chopra have the same premis but one is far more convincing and easier to read.
2 from the Deepak Chopra's book "Ageless Body, Timeless Mind" and 3 are from my own mind, where I jumbled words to sound like Chopra.
And the challenge is - To identify the ones that are not from the book.
1. Being able to process the raw, chaotic vibrations of the “quantum soup” and turn them into meaningful, orderly bits of reality opens up enormous creative possibilities.
2. In physical form this infinite creativity has been embodied in your cells; in unmanifest form it is expressed in the mind's silence, the void that is actually a fullness of untold possible meanings, possible truths, possible creations.
3. Your quantum mechanical body is awareness in motion and is part of the eternal field of awareness that exists at the source of creation.
4. Living in harmony with the body's rhythms overcomes entropy by allowing a frictionless flow of biological information.
5. At a quantum level, physical events in space-time such as heartbeat and hormone levels can be affected simply by taking mind to a reality where time does not have such a powerful hold.
Did you get it?
Which ones are from the book? And, which ones are not?
Well, ... I am afraid.....Your response is wrong.
Cause, I tricked you. My apologies.
All the 5 are actual quotes from the book.
The beauty of reading or listening to Deepak Chopra is that you will encounter high sounding words, whose meanings you probably know individually, but can never connect to the context of where those are used.
As they say a genius is never understood by all during his lifetime. And so is a pretentious shrewd wordsmith conman. What is Deepak Chopra? Well, it really depends on your quantum perception of the ultimate unseen reality where sublime energy flows beyond space-time metaphysical dimension to the physiosocial reverberations. You see.
I know, many find Chopra the guru that did change their lives forever. I really envy them. I wish I had their cosmic continuum vibrating awareness to understand his super quantum intelligence. I feel depressed. :-(
I started reading this book hoping this one will be a little bit better than his other books. I cannot say that I did not pick up few hints from this book, but it was utterly disappointing 99% of the time. However, it made a long road trip quite entertaining. First of all, advices he gives are ridiculously narcissitic. To go through the routine he suggested, one must be wealthy enough to support two maids or have a slave-like wife who does nothing but her husbands biddings. I doubt any husband will do the same for his wife. Secondly,I grew up in India and met plenty of men who followed similar regimens with the help of maids, wives, and daughters. I doubt that they lived any longer or had respect of others. Most of them were cranky old men obsessed with themselves.
I enjoy Chopra's books. As a western trained medical doctor (that specialized in endocrinology) I like his take on eastern & western philosophy. This book defines the mind/body/spirit connection and that "you are what you think".... Biostat 29 baby!!!
What a treasure of a book! Chopra is a wise man of our times and presents his thoughts/ideas in such a practical way. It was timely to read this book as John and I are now in the older generation. He spells out so clearly the difference between growing older and staying youthful in mind, heart and spirit. He reminds us that yes, the years go on but disease is what makes us older and much disease is preventable. He also reminds us that all of our life experiences are stored in our cells and there are many ways to bring healing and restoration to old "tapes", etc. I have made two resolutions I will act on when we return home. 1)With the $200.00 I will earn leading a workshop on The Faith Club I am going to hire a trainer to guide me in proper exercise for my body type, etc. 2)Every Tuesday morning I will devote to writing my memoirs and a book. Don't know just how they will coincide but determined to begin. I have chapters lined up but need to be serious about both these matters.
Deepak Chopra is gifted charlatan who preys on the weak-minded and gullible. Included in this group are a few “celebrities” and talk-show hosts who propagate this nonsense to their sheep-like followers. Being the adept con man that he is he throws in scientific jargon to hide his profound ignorance.
I try to ring in each new year with several inspiring reads. This classic by Deepak Chopra will challenge you to rethink the aging process, and offers simple practices for a longer, healthier life.
Deepak Chopra offers us nothing new in this book. He simply reinforces practical ideals for living a long, healthy life, body and soul. Great book to read and discuss.
http://iandbooks.wordpress.com/ Even though I had heard of Deepak Chopra before and have listened to some of his interviews on TV, I had never read anything written by him before. This book “Ageless Body, Timeless Mind” caught my attention and I am really glad of reading this book. This is slightly a different type of self-help book where he is specifically dealing with the concept of aging of human body and how we can have better control over it.
He has used research results from various fields as well as examples of societies from all over the world to show that aging process is not same for everybody. In some societies, life-style helps people to age better and people remain active till very old age where as in some other cultures it is quite opposite. His thoughts are that we human beings should be aware of our own aging process and being in touch with our own self and making some slight adjustments to our life-style itself can improve our health and help us to age better. The techniques that he has mentioned are very simple to follow and practice.
He also discusses on how life of human beings is not one life but a combination of millions of cells which are taking birth and dying all the time in the human body. His idea is that our own thoughts can make these cells sick or healthy making their life small or large thereby increasing the age of human body itself. As is with most of the popular self-help books, narrative style makes a lot of difference. If the author can make things look simpler to do and execute and can relate to the common problems people face, people will come back to read and will like the book. In this aspect, the author has done a good job here.
The parts in the book where he uses advanced concepts of physics like quantum mechanics and entropy baffled me and I really could not relate to those concepts. It almost looked like a desperate attempt to relate psychological concepts to physical sciences which is probably not required.
In this wonderful book (a must!), Deepak Chopra explains in a very understandable way and from A to Z, the difference between growing old and growing sick, being the last one, the accepted condition in our Western cultures for anyone over 45 years old, but amazingly, this does not have to be... it's actually a matter of awareness! biological age depends on psychological age he says, implying that knowledge of true nature is essential to overcome the fear and sorrow feelings that are really responsible for our cells' inability at a certain point of age (beginning at around 30 years old) to rejuvenate themselves; "the habit of fear has sunk so deep that the body remembers to carry it out, even when the mind is resisting with all its might".
We are not these bodies, but the thoughts that create it and those ones come from the Field... and it is right here where this book grows interesting; unity is what we should always aim for. Our physical world and our inner world (quantum) are closely related, forming the unity that gives consistency to the world we perceive, but perception is reality and ours is conditioned to think we are trapped in time and space so, we grow old and die because we expect that. We interpret that as the end, while it is really transformation. The moment we understand that the nature of our awareness is timeless, this process of growing old can stop and even reverse. It's our unique capacity of consciousness among all living creatures, which gives us this possibility.
After reading this book, I can also see, that in a couple hundred years from now, many aspects of our Western, modern medicine, will be seen as not very different to that from the middle ages in our eyes today... a wonderful read that will give you a completely different view of life, death, health, sickness, aging, healing and eternity. A tool, more than a book.
Written in '93 and still relevant today, Dr Chopra opens the mind to view our bodies and our relationship to the universe in a wholly different way than most of us have been taught for our entire lives. Being a doctor and scientist, he backs his revelations with quantum physics and scientific theory. He includes simple exercises to help each of us reach our best health and full potential in this lifetime. I consider this a primer for a long, happy and healthy life.
This is an exceptional book, at least for me. I read this book around ten years ago and the book made great impression on me. Once I started the book, I could not leave it before I finished. The connection between science and spirituality, body and mind has never been written better. I still use many of the principles in my articles and books.
This book is great. I learned that you can basically live for ever because the cells in your body regenerate. After 7 years all of the cells in your body are brand new, even your bones and teeth. So take care of yourself and live a long and happy life-
Chopra expounds on quantum physics and how it is believed to influence aging. One thought-provoking idea: part of the reason we age as we do is because we are watching others age. Expectations of what age brings helps in fact to manifest those very things.
Today is a turning point in my life. Today I finished this guide. I'll remember today, the day everything changed. This isn't a book, it's a legacy of wisdom, handed down from the ancient sages, expressed through the eloquence and clarity of Deepak Chopra's words.
Cleared the myth that suffering is necessary. It is a part of reality. We are inevitable victims of sickness, aging and death. Changing our consciousness changes our reality and one can create a healthy being by our own consciousness--the interaction of the mind.
Weekend reads The Mind Body Connection - Thoughts impact our body - Book mentions that we get old because we have seen others getting old and we think in that way and in reality our brain never gets old and we can change our thoughts to change our body - Aging affect is only 1 percent on our body per year
Quantum Healing - body is not a fixed entity but field of energy made up of minerals and water mostly that is constantly renewing itself
Lifestyle changes - Also includes practical advice on diet, meditation, exercise, and stress management - One thing I found unique was about stress management, author says If you completely stay in your present you will be less stressed and you will not get older
This is a great book to understand the difference between accepting to grow older and staying youthful in the mind, heart, and spirit using certain practices for living a longer healthier life. Dr. Chopra says that our life is made of million cells, they born, die, and regenerate our human body according to our own positive or negative thoughts which in turn can make these cells either sick or healthy, keeping us younger or aging. Basically, our emotions have an effect on our physical bodies. Dr. Chopra says that in certain rich advanced societies aging is different than aging in poorer societies. Of course, people in richer cultures have a better quality of life, remain active until very late in life, are more in tune with their own selves, and take better care of their bodies as they can afford better things. The psychological age helps the biological age; if we don’t feel fears and sorrows, our cells live happy, assuring a longer life to the physical body. Slow down, eat real food, think positive are all the powerful things we can do, they are the keys to longevity. This is a great book, although heavy on quantum physics, difficult to understand, certain passages I had to read more than one time, therefore took me longer to finish. I like to watch Dr. Chopra on TV better than reading him, he is exciting.
