Fifty million books ago I promised you a love story about Five and his Princess.
This is their story.

Five Aston has known Rory Shrike for as long as he can remember. He played with her in the sandbox. He went to every damn horse show just to be supportive. He helped her with her French, walked her home from school, and faked his test scores just to stay with her a little longer and not be sent off to college early.
But eventually he had to move on.
And so did she.
Never has a second chance meant so much to a boy who loves a girl.

A standalone book that is also a spin-off of the Rook & Ronin Series and prequel to the Mister Series. You can read it first, you can read it last. It doesn't really matter because it's f*cking Five.

J.A. Huss never wanted to be a writer and she still dreams of that elusive career as an astronaut. She originally went to school to become an equine veterinarian but soon figured out they keep horrible hours and decided to go to grad school instead. That Ph.D wasn’t all it was cracked up to be (and she really sucked at the whole scientist thing), so she dropped out and got a M.S. in forensic toxicology just to get the whole thing over with as soon as possible.

After graduation she got a job with the state of Colorado as their one and only hog farm inspector and spent her days wandering the Eastern Plains shooting the shit with farmers. After a few years of that, she got bored. And since she was a homeschool mom and actually does love science, she decided to write science textbooks and make online classes for other homeschool moms. She wrote more than two hundred of those workbooks and was the number one publisher at the online homeschool store many times, but eventually she covered every science topic she could think of and ran out of shit to say.

So in 2012 she decided to write fiction instead. That year she released her first three books and started a career that would make her a New York Times bestseller and land her on the USA Today Bestseller’s List eighteen times in the next three years. Her books have sold millions of copies all over the world, the audio version of her semi-autobiographical book, Eighteen, was nominated for a Voice Arts Award and an Audie award in 2016 and 2017 respectively, her audiobook Mr. Perfect was nominated for a Voice Arts Award in 2017, and her book, Taking Turns, was nominated for an Audie Award in 2018. Johnathan McClain is her first (and only) writing partner and even though they are worlds apart in just about every way imaginable, it works.

She lives on a ranch in Central Colorado with her family.

Never has a second chance meant so much to a boy who loves a girl.

FIVE. Fucking FIVE Aston. How long have we all been waiting for this book?!?! I, for one, have been waiting a long time! Ford is my most favorite JA Huss character, so I couldn’t contain my excitement when I finally got his son, Five’s book on my kindle! This story was full of romance, mystery, sexy times, and that twisty story-line that Julie does so well!
“You’re not the boss of me, ya know.”
A small smile that turns into a laugh. “I am, Princess. And you know that.

Five Aston and Rory Shrike have been friends since birth. Their parents were friends, and they’ve always had a special connection. It’s like they were fated to be together. Their lives aren’t simple, though. Five is a legit genius and is into some crazy things. Rory is at an Ivy League college and her life also takes a wild spin. No matter where life takes these two, one thing is for certain…. Their love for one another never falters.

Although ‘technically’ Five can be read as a stand-alone, it is connected to the Rook & Ronin series and is a prequel to the Misters series. To get the most out of this story, I think it’s beneficial to have read them all. Five is a fantastic story of first love, sacrifice, and friendship. It was one heck of a ride! Many of my questions were answered, but I still have more! I hope this isn’t the end of Five and Princess Shrike’s story! I definitely need another book!
“People don’t get this lucky, Five”
“We’re not people, Rory. We’re made of moonlight and twinkling stars, and the night.”

I don’t even know where to start with this one.
Five. Fucking Rutherford Aston V. Fucking Five.

1272 days ago this journey began for me. 1272 days ago a character was introduced, at the time I had no idea what would come, if anything would come of him, but I just knew that I wanted his story. And it was always the story of Five and his Princess. Never was there another option.

631 days later I experienced the start of the real romance between these two characters. The stirrings of a teenage romance.

758 days later the journey began with the Misters, a glance at an adult Five. A flash forward past decades and the need to know every detail of what happened. Now, Five wasn’t the star of the first Five Mister Series, but he’s FIVE – so yeah, he was sort of my star.

So when I say I’ve been dying for this book, I mean DYING for this book. For twelve hundred and seventy-two days, I have wanted all the words. Every. Single. One.

1 copy

Five is broken up into two parts – a look into their past and then their present.

2 copy

In part one you experience their love story from the start, and I mean from the start. Glimpses of time from their childhood to their teen years, that first day of school to the day he left. This part was an emotional journey for me. There was this nostalgia that came with getting to experience this from their point of view. Returning to those moments felt like coming home.

Part two is where my heart raced and I held my breath. These two were fated, but it was never going to be easy. Their parents may have done everything they could to protect them from the evil of the world, but somethings are just too big to ever fully destroy. Now the sins of the father are catching up and Five and Rory begin their own journey to their happily ever after.

3 copy

Okay. I tried to pull up my big-girl panties and read this. But I was a mess in the first chapter. I don’t think I’m invested in a set of characters more than I am with this team. Getting any chance to revisit them is cherished. A lump took up permanent residency in my throat during this entire read and when I wasn’t chewing on my fingernails, I was wiping away tears.

Five and Rory’s love story is EPIC. Its destiny, it’s beautiful and it’s fucking tragic all at once. It is the greatest love story that JA Huss has EVER WRITTEN. It is two heartbeats keeping the same rhythm. Five and Rory’s love defies everything. The love that spans this life, the next and the next and the next. Two souls that will forever be bound, that will always find each other, because there is no other option. It just is.

4 copy

In the style that we all love, JA Huss gives us a suspenseful romance that constantly leaves you guessing. As each layer is revealed, you get closer to the answer but the questions grow. She created a world that is unique, complex and unlike any other I’ve read before. JA Huss will captivate you from the start. Whether you are a new reader or a #Fan, this book will be an instant favorite. Every love story will be measured against Five and his Princess.

Rory Shrike was a strong heroine that knew her heart. She knew her worth and she had faith in love they shared. It wasn’t an easy journey for Rory, but she never lost sight of what really mattered.

6 copy

Five. I can’t even. He was this hard shell that was all gooey in the middle. I loved that he wasn’t shy about his love of Rory. That this man was so romantic, that he never hid his feelings. I loved that with every awkward bone in his body, with Rory, it was just different. With Rory, he was just a man in love, willing to do whatever it took.

After staying up all night with my favorite characters, I am still just a mess. I loved this book. I loved every second of it.

After waiting 1272 days for this story, it was more than I could have hoped for. I am in such a book hangover over this story and just typing up this review has me tearing up thinking about how much I love these characters.

Ever since six year old Five told Aunt Ronnie "Ill take it from here" and grabbed ahold of Princess Rory Shrikes hand, I've been obsessed with getting their story. It was so freaking adorable and I wanted to just bask in their love because you just knew it was going to be epic.

The next thing we learn about these two is Rory goes missing from college and Five being called in to clean up the Misters. The pieces we got of these two throughout the Mister series had my stomach in knots! What happened? How did it all go wrong? I NEED to know!

I don't think I've ever been so nervous starting a book. Things were implied but if I've learned anything, it's that JA Huss is the master at subterfuge. And thank fuck for that! I'm happy with this book. I'm a little sad about a few things but I'm relieved as well.

I don't think it's over yet, but I finally feel like I can breathe. I don't know that for sure. Huss could leave it right here but I like that I get the feeling she's going to bring this up again. I'm obsessed with her storyline involving "The Company" and I'll always be happy for more.

“Control freak with a side of sexy!”

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: ❤️💙💚💛
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌏
Character development: 😠☺️😋😉
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Aurora Shrike (a.k.a. Rory) - she is attending Princeton and is about to get off for the summer when her brother Oliver texts her that she should come home because Five is there. She grew up with Five since her father and his father were best friends. Though she has been planning to go to the Hamptons to stay at her roommate’s parents' house for the summer. She has been dating a guy named Cliff, who is her best friends' brother, for about a week and she is happy with her life and her plans for the summer.

The Heroes: Rutherford Aston V (a.k.a. Five) - he went to London and stayed away for six years. He had known and protected Rory Shrike since they were children, but they got to a point where they had to move on and he did, not returning home till the summer while Rory was at Princeton.

The Story: Rory flies' home to have it out with Five. Though she is surprised that he isn’t at the house with everyone else when she arrives. So, she leaves, but ends up seeing him anyway. He didn’t want to see her, and she figured that out. Five was all very mysterious about why he was back and what he came to do as well as the reason he cut off contact with her.

This was an odd book because in some places it is labeled Mister, book 0.5 and some places it was labeled as Mister, book 6. So I figured it would take place sometime during the 10 years between when the Misters got their names and when book 1 began. However, most of this one took place before the incident where the Misters were accused of rape.

This story was also pretty surprising, though I don’t know why I am surprised since Five was an enigma throughout the five books of the Mister series. Those stories never went too far into his background and none of the guys really knew much about him. Suffice it to say he has a lot of secrets and they were huge ones. I thought the book would center more around Rory since we know from the mister series that she was invited to the silver society and turned them down then disappeared, so I thought this entire book would be about that.

It was about both of the main characters, but I was glad when the story finally got to the silver envelope that Rory gets. She thinks she is joining a Princeton eating club which is similar to a fraternity/sorority, but more centered around having a house to eat meals and get together with members. The story did get really good and was much more complex than I expected.

Rory’s stupidity made me mad though. She knew from the first that the whole thing was shady, but she didn’t up and leave like she wanted to because she wanted to make it to the final part where she learned their secrets. I wanted her to just say F this and walk away when it looked so shady.

This book is told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Anna Reardon. Anna has a soft feminine voice which I really enjoyed. Teddy Hamilton is another one of my favorite narrators and he always does a great job so I wasn’t surprised at this one. There were a lot of good narrators in this series and I love that different narrators did each book.

Rutherford Aston the fifth. FIVE ASTON. FIVE. FIVE. FIVE. FIVE. FIVE. Yes, big bold shouty caps are needed because Julie Huss finally delivered everyone’s much anticipated story of Five and his bombshell princess, Rory Shrike. And boy oh boy did she deliver!!!

301de8f5acd8f6f1c4ed766b4e0d24 You, Five Aston, are the meaning of happy for me. And I have been kicking myself for six years, cursing the Big Man with the Wishes, for not telling him I want me to make you happy. ”

FIVE was simply perfection. This book was everything you craved, wanted, needed, and begged of Julie. She treated her readers to an epic love story of two soul-mates who were just fated for one another. They didn’t need to have their worlds to collide. They were just born and destined to be together. Their love was timeless and endless like the stars. And how could it not be, it’s Five and Rory.

#FIVE

If you have been following the series, you are all aware of the history of Five and Rory. They were more than childhood and family friends. They were two badass individuals with their own talents and smarts. But we all know, Five is on another whole level of genius. So in this book, Julie introduces readers to the backstory on the relationship status of Five and Rory. It is there in Part One of the book, where readers understand the dynamics and tangible bond that these two individuals have for each other. No amount of time and separation could deny their attractions and feelings for each other.

301de8f5acd8f6f1c4ed766b4e0d24 I know he just wants to protect me. I get it. But my daddy didn’t raise me to let a man take over. And Five Aston knows this better than anyone.”

#FIVE3

Since lots of things occurs in Part One that dictates what will happen in Part Two of the storyline, I will stop myself from spoiling anything further. But what I can tell you, Julie once again proves to us that she indeed a storyteller, who has mastered in keeping her readers on the edge of their seats. Every detail is important. Every character plays a role. And most importantly, it’s a Huss book so everything is unpredictable hence why all her books are always engaging and lovable.

301de8f5acd8f6f1c4ed766b4e0d24 We. Are. Partners. In life. In death. For eternity. And you don’t get a say in it, mister. Because this is fate. I’ve been yours and you’ve been mine since the beginning of time. And it’s gonna stay that way, whether you like it or not.”

If you are a huge JA Huss fan like myself, then you will be so happy to know that characters from the past WILL make an appearance. So all you Oliver fans, you will be pleased to know he plays a significant role in the book. With that being said, I was very intrigued with Kate’s character. She surprised me how much I liked her character presence in the story line. As for Five and Rory, I love them so much. Their love was fierce as much as their personality. Individually, these two were strong but together they were stronger as ever.

#FIVE (1)

So if you are looking for a epic love story that has everything. I mean everything from raw emotions, suspense and REAL SOUL MATE KIND OF LOVE then I highly recommend you to read this book. Julie will have you smiling like a fool and be totally smitten with Rory’s feisty personality and Five’s protective nature.

Joint Review with my blogger buddy, Michelle!

Michelle’s Rating: 5 Stars
Grace’s Rating: 4.5 stars

Michelle: Geez Grace, it’s been a hot minute since you and I have written a review together. What’s up with that? It was because of you, I started reading J.A. Huss and it was the Social Media Series. Many books after, and I am still kinda hooked. Fucking Five, like his dad Fucking Ford, is Fucking amazing! Yes, there will be lots of F bombs throughout, deal with it people.

Grace: Girrrrrl, it has been too long!! But of course Fucking Five would bring us together.

I'm so glad you jumped on the band wagon to enjoy these books with me. I love buddy reading with you! And this book is best enjoyed that way, because you are going to want someone to talk to while reading.

Michelle: Let’s get to the heart of the matter. I’m sure Grace will agree with me, you can technically read Five as a standalone and not be lost, but if this is your first J.A. Huss book, I would suggest whenever you have time on your TBR, that you start at the beginning, the Rook & Ronin Series, the Come Series, Meet Me in the Dark, Wasted Lust and finally, the Misters Series. Yeah a lot of books, I know, but again not necessary but recommended. So now that I added to your TBR list, let me get to nitty gritty of this review.

I think Grace and I have been waiting for Five the minute he was introduced to us in the R&R Series. Grace, over here, has claimed his dad, Ford as her BBF for many years and we weren’t even to mention that we had the hots for him.

Grace: Yes, Ford has held a steady spot in my top 5 BBFs since I read Taut. And then you creates the perfect spawn . . .
Fucking Five!!! Finally!!!!
I've only been waiting for his book for 3 years, pretty much begging the author to write his book after reading that Epilogue to Guns.

And I agree with Michelle, you can read this as a standalone, but there are so many layers and connections to other books, that I personally think you'd enjoy it more if you've at least read the R&R series.

So did Five measure up to his Dad's standards . . .

Michelle: Five, oh Five, I’m having such a cougar moment right about now. Who knew this charismatic boy genius, would be so fucking romantic? There are two parts, the love story between Five and his Princess Aurora (yeah, her mom has an obsession with Disney Princesses), or Rory. They were destined to be together, so you get to see how their love story literally started while they were in diapers. I’m still swooning over his words to Rory.

“You are the love of my life, Aurora Shrike. My heart’s desire. My soulmate. My fae. And there is nothing I want more than to give you everything you want. Show you the entire world. Make you happy.”

But Rory doesn’t hold back either, she tells Mr. Five in no uncertain terms, that they are destined to be each other.

I’m not gonna waste a single second of this life, that’s for your. I’m going to be with you forever. And you know why?” “Why?” I ask. “Tell me.” “Because I’m the boss of you.”

Grace: While the years of separation, six to be exact, did weigh heavily on Rory, and she privately steamed about that separation, the two really don't hold back when they are together. Their love and passion for one another was oozing from the pages. So hot!!

Five did try to distance himself at times to protect her, but this Strike Bike Princess wasn't having it!! You go girl, you get your man!! LOL

Michelle: The second part of the book is the where it gets really interesting, and in true J.A. Huss style, lots of suspense and WTF moments and how will Five and Rory will truly have their happily ever after. I was on edge, as always when reading a J.A. Huss book, on edge.

Grace: I was so confused for a good part of this book. What was the big secret Five was hiding? But when it was revealed, I was kind of disappointed in myself that I didn't figure it out sooner. If you've recently read R&R, you may figure it out before the revelation.

And although Five's secret was shocking, the real thriller in this book involved Rory and that crazy ass club at her college. It definitely made me think of Skull & Bones, only way creepier. I think both of us were in shock around the 70% mark as everything becomes clear. I loved this whole last part of the book, so much so that I wished there was more and it didn't feel so rushed. I literally saw the % left in book on my kindle and kept thinking we'd get a cliffhanger.

Michelle: Do Five and Rory get their happily ever after? Well I am not telling you a damn thing. But what I will tell you is that prepare yourself for some hot steamy sexy times and moments of crazy. I could not wait to find out what happened to Rory. I read the Misters series and for those of you who have read it, you will know what I am talking about. Maybe Grace will agree, but I feel like I grew up with this whole clan. Always wanting more. I knew that both Grace and I wanted a book about Five, we needed a book about Five. The author did not disappoint. My brain usually hurts and eventually I need another day to recuperate after reading a J.A. Huss book because I want to know how in the hell she comes up with these crazy ass storylines that seem to fit. I’m going back to my sofa now, and continued to rock myself back and forth for a bit, but before I do, go read Five.

Grace: Yes, this book delivered everything I expected from Five and his Princess. From the moment he claimed her as his when they were toddlers, this couple has been destined to be together. And it was so great to see that love didn't die over the years.

If you share our love for this group and this couple, you won't be disappointed.

5 "Don't get her pregnant" Stars

Wow. Just wow. I've said it so many times you are probably tired of reading it, but fffuuuuuuccccckkkkkkkk. JA Huss is beyond freaking brilliant. I can't even begin to describe the ride i just went on, but I'll see what I can do. Because really? It's #FuckingFive and I've been waiting for him since he made his appearance in Guns. We knew he'd be amazing as soon as he took his Princess's hand and told Aunt Ronnie that he would take it from there.

Because he did.

He took it from there. And every single decision made was because he wanted to protect his sweet, naive Princess.

"Then promise me, baby. Just say those two words. 'I promise.' As soon as you do that, I'll give you everything you want. OK?"
Dear, God. I expected something epic with Five, I really did, but I did not expect this level of epicness. That won't make sense until you read it, but just know that Huss has way outdone herself with this. Five is a dirty talker, he's a pleaser, he's a genius, he's a robot geek, he's a lover, and he's a fighter.

Life is short. Time is finite.
No one seems to know this better than the members of The Team and those Company kids who got out. It was always a matter of time. We always knew the sins of the father would catch up sooner or later. But when?

Five is the word of the day today. Five is the man of the hour. Five. Five. Five.
You'd do well to remember this. Five is the man. Hands down one of the best Huss men out there.

If you've been following this cast of characters from the beginning, you're going to love it when their names appear here. Seeing some of my favorite people show up in these books is like going home. Home to a time that was fucked up, but still home and still a place of love. And lies. And deception. But that's the beauty of a Huss book, it's all lies wrapped in deceit wrapped in a pretty cover. You want one thing--and you will probably get it--but you're going to hurt in the process.

I cried. I almost shed a tear when I read the section heading for Part One. I'm a crier, I admit, but damn. Just a heading? Yeah, I knew this ride would hurt. I knew it'd be fantastic. And I just had a feeling I knew where it would stop.

And I was so close to being correct (and really, if you've read The Misters, it won't come as a shock to you either). I cried. I cried for Five. I cried for Rory. I cried for Spencer and Ronnie, the Shrike siblings, and I cried for me. Because I'm a sap.

And if you already loved Oliver, you're going to absolutely fall in love with his bad ass 12-year old self. Yes, he's already a bad ass. What do you expect from Spencer Shrike's only son?

But Five and Princess? This show is all theirs. And it's a show you want to see time and again. It's a show that has me looking for the time to re-read all 13 books, plus the HEA, plus The Misters. That's 19 books--20 if you count Five--that I want to binge before Mr & Mrs hits the shelves.

I need this. I need this right now. I need you to say yes and make promises, and never forget them.

Five blew my mind. It's a story I've been waiting for since forever, and Huss definitely didn't disappoint.

Review - (un)Conventional Bookviews
Story:
Princess Shrike was all ready to move on with her life. With no news from five in the past six years, she figured she should just do her thing. Date. Make new friends. Vacation in the Hamptons. Until her brother Ollie sends her a message saying she has to come home. Because Five is home.

There was a lot of intrigue in Five. And a lot of heartache. And quite a bit of sadness. Of course, I also got Huss' spectacular snark. And her hotness. Plus love - Five was also filled with beautiful love. Of course, there are also secret societies, violence, fights and some very self-involved people.

The suspense killed me. And that is all I'm going to say. At the end, I didn't know up from down. Or right from left. I felt lost and found at the same time. And I was utterly shocked.
Characters:
Rory is sweetness. But she also packs a huge punch, knows how to shoot, and has a lot of love to give.
Five is his usual quirky self. Extremely smart. But the guys he's up against might be even smarter.
Oliver is young here, but still a schemer.
Writing style :
Five has dual points of views from Five and Rory's perspective. Written in first person, present tense, I was right in the middle of the action with Rory and Five until the end.
Feels :
My feels died of shock, I think. But before that happened, there was excitement, love, anticipation...

Fave Quotes - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Snowflake was young then. Rory's first pony. She'd just started learning to rid.e And on that Halloween night we trick-or-treated riding around Fort Collins on a perfectly-groomed white pony dressed up in every detail as a princess and her knight.

Her tongue is sweet. Like she's been sampling her outfit while she was waiting for me. She tastes like the past, the present, and the future all at once.

Fucking Five. Why can't he just see things my way? We're grown-ups now. That stupid kid stuff is over. And I'm ready to start something new. I don't want to be his princess. I want to be his queen.

Once upon a time there was a Princess named Rory who gave her heart very early on in her young life to a boy with a most unusual name, Rutherford Aston the Fifth, aka Five. He became her protector and the two of them were inseparable. Their history has always included each other from playing together as tots to young teens falling in love. But as we know, love isn't easy and life can be full of obstacles.

The story of Five and his Princess is brought to life in all its twists and turns by one of my fave authors, JA Huss. As with all of the books in the Rook & Ronin and the Mister series this book is packed with plenty of action, drama, mystery, humor, passion, and of course tons of love smothered in heat. We get it all in HUGE doses. Nothing is understated in this JAHuss novel. I loved it, I couldn't get enough of it, I highly recommend it which is why I'm giving Five what else but FIVE FABULOUS FUCKING STARS.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Rory Shrike and Five Aston have known each other all their lives, growing up together and falling in love as teenagers. However, their love story ended when Five went abroad for college, leaving Rory heartbroken.

Five’s destiny was mapped out for him generations ago and he knows that one day he will have to take his place in his grandfather's business. Something he never wants to touch Rory. He will have to work hard to make sure there is a way to have a second chance with her.

This is the only book I have read from the Misfit series but I have read Rook & Ronin and the spin off series so I was familiar with most of the characters in this story. I listened to the audio version of this story and the narrators did a great job.

Where do I begin? To say I've wanted Five and Rory's book forever is an understatement. This is Five Fucking Rutherford Aston. This was a quick and entertaining read. It answered some big questions for me, but of course, also added more questions. And there's no doubt that this story isn't over. More will come.

I did a quick listen of this fantastic book over the weekend while on a road trip with my SIL.

It was the perfect way to pass the time in the car. I mean, who better to spend your afternoon with than Five Motherfucking Aston?

No one (unless it's Spencer Shrike, but that's not the point here).

And Five's love for Rory is the sweetest love, it's the purest love, it's the love that surpasses time.

I think I enjoyed this book more on audio. There's just something about hearing these characters come to life that makes it a bit more magical, a bit more real, a bit more exciting.

Because JA Huss writes exciting. She writes beautiful, flawed characters.

If you want to get started, this can be read before the Misters or after the Misters, but it MUST be read after the Rook & Ronin series (all 13 books, if you want to do it right so you can recognize all the names in this book).

(audiobook) It starts as a new adult romance--he left, she’s angry, he comes back years later and tries to apologize--but becomes something more. Expect gun fights and lots of other surprises that I can’t reveal. Let’s just say that Rutherford Aston V aka Five is a very interesting character with a very interesting life.

But one thing is more important than the others in Five’s life--Rory. He’s loved her since they were kids, and he knows that she’ll have his children, but his life keeps getting in the way.

I have to admit I found Five to be a bit too much. Is there even one thing that he doesn’t know how to do? BUT as romantic character, he is perfect. There’s not much he isn’t willing to do for his princess. Don’t think though that Rory is a weak character! She has balls that rival her boyfriend’s.

The narrators did their job to bring the story to life. I was a bit confused by it, but it’s still a very good book.

Quickie

Series: Mister #0.5 or #6 (I’ve seen both; standalone, but it’s the link between two different series from the author)

Hashtags: #billionaire romance #romantic suspense #new adult #second chance

Triggers: various violence and abuses

Main couple: Aurora Shrike & Rutherford Aston V (or Rory & Five)

Hotness: 4/5

Romance: 5/5

+ wow Five is definitely a man in love

Finally!!!!
I've only been waiting for his book for 4 years, pretty much begging the author to write his book after reading that Epilogue to Guns.

And I agree with Michelle, you can read this as a standalone, but there are so many layers and connections to other books, that I personally think you'd enjoy it more if you've at least read the R&R series.

F**king Five ...... f**king brilliant!!!! Wow, wow, wow. This book really was something special! Rutherford Aston V and Aurora Shrike: it was fate. It was destiny. It was meant to be. It was written in the goddamn stars from the day they were born that they would be together. And from the moment six year old Five took Rory's hand and told her mother " I'll take it from here," he would spend the rest of his life doing everything in his power to protect his princess, even if that meant walking away and breaking her heart.
I don't want to be his princess. I want to be his queen.

The second this book landed on my kindle on release day, the rest of the world ceased to exist as I lost myself in Five and Rory's story. I'm not sure what I was expecting, a straight forward second chance romance maybe? Hah! No chance. I should have known better. I mean they are the offspring of Ford and Spencer after all and look at all the mischief, mayhem, trouble and strife that surrounded those guys. You know that saying "The sins of the father are to be laid upon the children?" Was the past about to rear its ugly head again?

Rory and Five's story was full of all kinds of crazy goodness. Oh the lies, secrets and double crossings. The action and the drama. The heart ache, angst and sadness, all of which was balanced perfectly with a healthy dose of swoon worthy romance, happy dance giddiness and of course sexy times. This book packed a massive punch and I inhaled it within the space of a few hours. I could not put it down.
We. Are. Partners. In life. In death. For eternity. And you don’t get a say in it, mister. Because this is fate. I’ve been yours and you’ve been mine since the beginning of time. And it’s gonna stay that way, whether you like it or not.”

I loved Rory and Five. She was such a hot headed firecracker, just like her momma and Five was Ford all over again. He was smart, always in control and sexy as hell. The love between these two was never in question. They loved each other wholly and completely and boy did I feel that love. But when they butted heads, omg the banter was just hilarious. Neither wanted to back down. It was a fight to the end and that was so entertaining to read.
"Love is not a calculation, Five aston. Love is a leap of faith."
"Five" was like a trip down memory lane. The old haunts, those familiar faces and those connections with other JA Huss series. I will say, I haven't read the "Mister" series so for me, this was a post "Rook & Ronin" read. Did I feel like I'd missed out on anything by not reading the "Mister" series? I don't think so but I've just downloaded "Mr Perfect" so time will tell.
She tastes like the past, the present and the future all at once.
"Five" was a ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ read. And the bonus... This isn't the end!!!! It can't be the end!!!! There's room for more!!! Woo hoo!!!! Please give us more JA Huss!!! Pretty please ❤️

Woah what a ride! I didn't know whether I was coming or going most of the time, but despite the fast-pace of this story, I did enjoy it and would recommend it to fans of the Rook & Ronin series.

Five is a child genius, son of Ford Aston, he gets accepted to Oxford University at the tender age of 15. Rory, daughter of Spencer, is his childhood sweetheart. After a separation of 6 years, Five is back in the US and Rory is wondering why he hasn't been in touch all this time.

I loved the relationship between Five and Rory, they were solid and they knew without a doubt they were meant to be. Five was ridiculously sweet, and Rory was as feisty as her mother was.

Lots of suspense, pretty gripping, and super sexy.

A great conclusion to their story, but I am pretty certain there is more to come...

Five is part of an ongoing series. Told from dual POV.

Rory and Five was a story I couldn’t wait to read. Within the first few pages it dawned on me I should have refreshed my memory on their backgrounds before embarking on this book. To have researched thoroughly, I would have needed to shut myself off for a good spell. Five is a spin off or connected to the following series:

-Rook and Ronin
-Rook and Ronin Spin Offs
-Dirty, Dark, and Deadly

And possibly the Mister series, since it is Mister #.05 and apart from this book, I’ve yet to read anything else in that series. The others I have listed above were all favourites I have read and they were all 4 to 5 star dark and twisty reads. Twisty being the keyword, meaning a lot has happened over the ten books. While I recall the bones of each of the series there’s also a lot I needed to refresh my memory on.

Regardless of the complexities of the plot, it was the simplicity Rory evoked and demanded when she was with Five I appreciated. She’s far from naive but she’s been sheltered and is not as street savvy as I expected her to be. On more than one occasion I wanted to send an SOS to her family to come and have a long overdue chat with her. Then again, with Five having gone stealth with his family, the intel would have to be collated from more than one source. Of course, her family more than likely were unaware of the unknown players holding key information essential to paint the full picture.

My heart went out to Five, he was damned if he did and damned if he didn’t whichever move he took. Well, except for the moments he insisted they embrace what they had with the understanding only the present is a gift and the future a mystery. I expected Five to be more like Ford than he was, but with all the pressure coming at him to contend with, I understood why he wasn’t. Whereas Ford worked in a team, Five is flying solo, despite Rory’s demands to join him to put a stop to the threats he is sensing drawing closer by the minute.

While I struggled with the repetition when it came to pleasantries, there were other times where the details were scant and I was left wanting more. It would have been good to have fleshed out the drama when trouble struck or threatened. My experience had me torn between a 3 and 4 star rating, settling with the middle ground. This was a coming of age story based around the dirty and dark dealings of the rich and powerful, depicted haphazardly but always well-paced. This was a page turner despite my struggles and a book that came into its glory at the final hour.

It would be remiss not to mention the EOBS (author afterword) which, as always, illuminated the story with JA’s usual finesse. I instantly wished I had read it as a foreword but then if I was meant to read it in the beginning it would have been put there…wouldn’t it?

I just finished reading this and I have such a whirlwind of emotions going through me. One second I feel so sad that it's over, then I feel such tremendous love for this iconic couple that I have been waiting so long to meet. I feel overwhelmed by what happens in this story, and I suddenly feel so hollow, because these two people consumed me heart and soul for the past two days, and now it's done. I'm done reading. And I don't know what to do with myself now. The moon and stars must have aligned because my husband went out of town the day I started reading, and it's a good thing he did because I could do nothing but devour this book for the past 24 hours.

For those of you who have been #HussAholics from the beginning and have read the Rook and Ronin series all the way through, you'll remember when we first met Five. What's his name? Rutherford Aston the Fifth, of course. I shall call him...Number Five. And then the epilogue (part 2) in Guns gave us our first real taste of a 6 year old Five and his Princess Rory Shrike. Oh man, how many times have I read that epilogue just to keep myself satisfied until Julie announced we would be getting a novella about the whole Rook and Ronin crew. And in that novella, we got to experience the sweetness of teenage love between Five and his princess. And we all fell even deeper in love with them, to the point that readers bugged Julie relentlessly to give us more of their story, and she said she would, BUT we had to wait because she had all these other books she needed to get out first.

Those other books she had to get out? They were five books called the Mister series, each book about a different guy who was part of an event that happened in college that bound them together forever. And even though he isn't one of the five Misters, Five Aston plays a pretty significant role throughout that series, which only managed to ramp up my WANT and NEED for his and Rory's story.

Now that ALL of that is out of the way, how can I really talk about this book without giving anything away? Fuck, this is going to be hard.... Okay, Julie knows how to write a love story. She is a master at this love story shit. She makes you feel it all the way to your bones. No matter what else is going on in whatever book you're reading of Julie's, the love story is everything. But it's not in your face blaring at you, it's there and you acknowledge it and absorb it and revel in it. And as much as I love that in each book, this book has THE ultimate love story.

Not every love story is hearts and flowers and happy all the time. There's struggles and obstacles and challenges along the way. How the two people in love deal with those things are huge indicators of if a love is going to last and survive the test of time. And not every love story has a conventional happily ever after. Everyone's idea of an HEA is going to be different, and it is really a matter of what the couple determines is their version of happily ever after. Never before in Julie's books have I seen a couple work as hard or as diligently as Five and Rory do to achieve theirs. I mean, these two have known each other since birth and they've pretty much known all their lives that they were going to be together always.

In typical Julie fashion, she crafts this supremely complex romantic suspense that I almost needed to write on a white board to keep all the puzzle pieces clear. Just when I thought I had one thing figured out, she drops these little bombshells (ha! pun intended) on the reader and I find myself back at square one trying to figure out what the hell is really going on. If you've already read the Mister series, so many things in this book will finally make sense for you. If you're reading this book first, you'll end up having plenty of Aha! moments as you work your way through that series. I think I'm really glad I read the Misters first, because for me personally, it made all answers to the questions I've been storing up that much sweeter. Either way, you can't go wrong.

I feel like I should be making some big, grandiose statement here at the end of my review because I've been waiting on this book for so long. But I don't have one. I'm still absorbing everything I read, going back and reading lots of parts over and over again. Probably most of this review won't even make sense to a lot of people, if they haven't read all the books that came before this one. I know I didn't cover hardly anything that will tell you what this book is about or talk about certain scenes and all that stuff. I really don't want to because everyone needs to experience this story for themselves. So I will just close with saying that Julie absolutely crafted the most perfect, heartfelt, epic story for Five and Rory. I want to crawl into their world and live there with them. I want to be adopted into the world they live in, with their huge family of dysfunctional relatives, like "insane Uncle James" and "the killer I call Uncle Merc" It is the sign of a supremely talented author that can make a reader want to live in their books. That's me, where do I sign up?

OMFG...I can't even anymore...this book was perfect!
Five is the man...like literally the man. He was born to love Rory. He is the most kind and precious thing in the world. He is brilliant and charming. He is dangerous and calculating. He is SEXY as eff!!!! He is like the modern day geeky version of James Bond!
Rory is a princess through and through, but she is also tough as nails. She was put on this earth for Five Aston. Once his nerdy little eyes locked with her's when they were kids it was game over for both of them. His idiocracies made her fall in love with him all those years ago. She never for once stopped loving him, even when he left her. Gawd the way Julie writes a effing book outta be illegal...like no joke...this book was everything I wanted it to be. Five blew my mind. Ohhh and sweet baby Jesus on all that is holy...the dirty things he did to Rory...I can't even begin. Like who knew that robot geek had all those sexy moves in him? I mean he played her body like an excerpt. I can not wait for more...Julie better give it to us...I mean so many sigh worthy parts, so many anxiety ridden parts. Hands down a must read! That ending...

“We’re not people, Rory. We’re made of moonlight, and twinkling stars, and the night.”

Oh yes F*ckin FIVE is back. He was a storm with a mission of destruction and lust. I consumed this book so quickly, I had finally got my barrings and it was over. But the feels and oohs were worth the crash and lovely burn. You get a Company update. So many references, I found myself researching the who and the what of the Shrike Bike World. I almost want to re-read everything in it's new order.

Princess Aurora was a force to be reckoned with. It was cute, and fun to see how she evolved. I enjoyed her immensely.

FIVE was just that, an enigma who teased, taunted and sauntered his way through a sexy game of good guys vs bad guys.

The ending was a beautiful disaster that will bring a true Huss fan to a standing ovation.
I can't give away too many details. Just read the damn thing already. This one was definately written for us: Shrike B*tches! #UltimateHussie

Ah h***.... Sigh. (Deep breath) I am lost for words but here it goes......
If that wasnt the best book I have read in awhile. J.A. freaking rocked Five & Rory's story. J.A.'s words are amazing and the details were on point. Some of us have be patiently waiting for this book and now that it's here, I don't want it to end. I couldn't put the damn thing down. I wanted to devour and savior it at the same time. This book is action packed, steamy, swoon worthy, drama, sad, happy, secerts and twist n turns. I would definitely recommend reading the Mister's series first. You could get away with it but trust me its worth it. Five IS A MUST READ.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars then I would.

3 stars. Not what I expected, but it was entertaining. A bit all over the place, lots of talking in circles with soap opera pretend reveals that never came until the end and some not at all. Smoke and mirrors. And a lot of far fetched storylines. But, that's what we pay for when we buy a Huss book. It's always a crazy ride. Five and Rory's love story was great. It was absolutely my favorite part. 5 stars for that. I would have loved to see more of them. Even as flashbacks.

A little disgruntled that there was one line. One! In this of all books. I expected more than that. That's all I'll say about that. Those who read R&R full series will know what I'm talking about.

Whatever you thought you knew about Five and Rory...think again.
Did they love each other, oh yeah, that's a given, with a love so true it puts every other romance I've ever read to shame, but in true J.A. Huss fashion, expect the unexpected.
Whatever it is you thought you had figured out, you didn't.

Five is brilliant, Rory is a fighter. I was blind-sided more than once with the turn of events.
I absolutely love these characters.

Die hard Huss fans have been patiently, (or not so) waiting for Five's story and she delivered, we got answers to burning questions and a masterful set up for the Mister series.

I had quit this author awhile ago, but then there was this promise of FIVE AND A BONUS OF FORD. So bought this book I did. The author states this is a standalone book, but it absolutely is not. If you did not read Rook and Ronin and the Come series and all the spinoffs of these, you will be lost for sure. Much to my dismay the author decided to attach Five to another series to get you to buy that entire series too which I have no desire to read. Since I'm feeling lazy, I really don't feel like writing my thoughts on this book, so I will give you my friend Page's review which sums up my thoughts completely. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Wow. Just Wow. So bleeping good. I haven't read a make-me-evil-grin book likes this in month. I was hooked from the first pages. There needs to be more writers like Julie. I'm sure they're out there, and I need to find them.
This book is an equal mix of sweet and company. Good and evil....is it evil? Nah. At one point I wondered why I was gunning for this group, but it all shakes out.
Again, so very good.

This might in fact be my absolute new favorite JA Huss book. And that's really saying something from me. I've been waiting for Five and Princess Rory's story for years. Ever since they were kids and we knew that not only were they soulmates, but that world domination was going to be their game. This book did not disappoint. It was everything we've been promised and more.

Five. What can I say about Five?

“There’s five senses and five fingers. Five toes and five vowels in the English language. There’s five Great Lakes, and give points on a star… Five golden rings in that song. Five people in the Scooby-Doo show. Five digits in a zip code, five days in the work week…”

I thought that Spencer Shrike and Veronica Vaughn were my very favorite couple ever, but Princess Shrike (AKA Rory) and Five Aston are the epitome of a love story. These characters were the start of the second generation of the Rook & Ronin series. Their introduction as the cutest kindergarteners since the beginning of time created a fan frenzy for more, more, more of these characters and their deliciously fated love story.

I fell in love with J.A. Huss’ writing when I read her first book in the Rook & Ronin series, Tragic. Every book, every character since has made me care more and made me feel more intensely than I have about any other character or story line. Her latest, Five, is the perfect book. It is a prequel, a sequel, a standalone novel. First time readers will love the book, but will not catch every nuance and tie in to previous books. Avid fans will have their minds blown at the amazing storyline arc and tie in to multiple series from author J.A. Huss. Oh, by the way, my fellow avid fans will agree that author J.A. Huss is the Queen of Conspiracy. She can write the most twisted conspiracy embedded in the hottest romance ever!

“People don’t get this lucky, Five”

“We’re not people, Rory. We’re made of moonlight and twinkling stars, and the night.”

Five takes readers through the start of Rory and Five’s relationship from childhood to the present. They grew from adorable to tragic long-distance lovers. In the present, Five and Rory prove that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and that is about as “spoilerish” as this review is going to get.

In this book, J.A. Huss ripped my heart out, stomped on it, and then, when I flat-lined, she, eventually, gave my heart a reason to beat again. This is definitely a read-in-one sitting book. There was a point in the book, when Huss literally took my breath away. I wasn’t sure my heart would survive if I continued to read. I am in complete awe of this author. Each and every book is amazing. Her intellect, sensuality, and romantic tendency shine through in each book as does her genius ability to tie multiple series arcs together. J.A. Huss is a master storyteller, and I can’t recommend her latest book more!
