SUMMARY (50 words or less)
Despite the one and a million events, plural, that led to the set up of this story, I still enjoyed it. It was like a rubber necking on the betway to see this accident and how it was going to play out. The end wrapped up quickly, still I enjoyed.

The premise of Holiday Affair sounded like a delightful read: warm sandy beaches, sizzling hoiliday romance, a rational academic heroine and a roguish charming hero, I thought I’d just need a cocktail to feel like I was on vacation. But sadly the characters drove me up the wall almost as soon as their vacation came to an end and though I persevered and gave it several chances, after 70% I was just so frustrated with Lissy (and Nick) that I waved them goodbye. At first it wasn’t easy pinpointing what felt off and why I didn’t connect and enjoy Holiday Affair. Until about 1/3 I racked my brain, trying to find the culprit when I realized that it were the main characters: Lissy and Nick, who both separately on their own and then in their relationship towards each other irritated me.
Lissy should be a rational and intelligent young woman seeing as she is a respected academic PhD professor. Despite that the way she behaved in general and towards Nick left me baffled. Even with the recent loss and grief in her life (her beloved grandpa died recently), it was too much for me to comprehend how she teared up at almost every scene (“her eyes tearing up”, “swallowing back tears”, “wiping tears from her cheek”, and I could go on), it seemed that she had no other way to cope with life and handle her emotions than having an almost break down and crying. Whenever she had a confrontation with Nick first she teared up then flew off the handle, became agressive and shouted, it was as if there were two persons inside of her. I couldn’t get a hold of her personality, she was like a highly strung, constantly PMSing, hormonal pregnant insecure woman (and believe me I so hate these clichés that women are hysterical due to their hormones, but sadly Lissy really was). I didn’t find her to be a strong and independent woman with a backbone, but rather a fragile minded, simpering, immature woman. And that was disappointing as I had such hopes for her character.
Then there is Nick who could have been a deliciously dark and carefree hero, but he just wasn’t. Not only he couldn’t make up his mind regarding his feelings for Lissy, but he kept playing with her emotions as well:
“He looked at her white knuckles and felt a pang of regret for the distress he had caused her.”
And still he continues to behave the way he does, one minute being hot for her the next rejecting her and being angry with her. But besides this quite unattractive trait in his character there was an even bigger fault in my eyes:
PARTIAL SPOILER ALERT
When Nick comes back from vacation he discovers that his older brother Tom has been seeing Lissy and that he has potentially serious plans for her. Even after this he keeps pursuing her (or rather threatening her one minute to keep away from Tom and not to hurt him, and then kissing her and sleeping with her the next) behind his brother’s back. Somehow even in spite of their history (Tom had once gone out with Olivia, who then left him to go out with his little brother Nick and thus hurting Tom), he doesn’t find this awkward and potentially hurtful for his brother? (Even if I disregard the fact that brothers sharing the same woman is kind of eww in a romance novel, I could rationalize that Lissy is different as she is special for Nick, however seeing how there was Olivia as well, it seems it’s Nick’s M.O. to poach from his brother’s dating pool…)
END OF PARTIAL SPOILER ALERT
So due to these serious personality faults of both main characters I not only could not connect with them on any level, they irritated me. And besides this lack of personal symapthy I just didn’t feel the chemistry between Nick and Lissy.
In the romance scene on the island too much happened too soon, their attraction wasn’t convincing. Why couldn’t their night on the island be a one night stand about sizzling attraction? No it had to be gentle and about that “special” connection (despite this night being their first and only date…). I just didn’t feel the heat, the sparks, the sizzling. Reading the love scenes between Nick and Lissy I just wasn’t sold on their romance. I never saw or felt the chemistry between them, and truth be told their relationship read more like an emotionally abusive one.
The writing didn’t flow fluently for me, maybe due to the characters’ inner thoughts and jumbled up emotions. I just felt that on the emotional front both Lissy and Nick were very chaotic and in the messy way rather than the deliciously confused way.
The highlight of the novel for me were the beautifully evocative descriptions about the exotic location of Lissy and Nick’s vacation on the Whitsunday Islands. Thanks to Annie Seaton’s colourful and vivid descriptions of these secenes I could wonderfully picture the colours, the beautiful and lush setting, could almost feel that sea breeze.
Verdict: Despite the promising premise of Holiday Affair I just couldn’t soldier on when I felt so strongly frustrated by the main characters that I wanted to tear my hair out or conk them on the head with a saucepan. Sadly Holiday Affair just wasn’t for me. But who knows, I’ve seen a review on Goodreads starting this way “Love a story with a strong woman who knows her own mind.” made me wonder if we read the same book, but it seems we each have our own definition of strong women and knowing our own mind, so try out the excerpt or take your chances, who knows in which camp you will be.
Plot: 7/10 Characters: 2/10 Writing: 6/10 Cover: 10/10 - the perfect cover for a holiday affair :-)
Love a story with a strong woman who knows her own mind. When Lissy meets Nick on holiday she decides to have a fling with him, no strings attached. I easily found myself lost in the beautiful descriptions of the settings that Annie Seaton developed. She has a way with words that make you feel you are in the setting with her characters, even to the stage where I was cursing Nick to hurry up and stop stringing Lissy along. Interaction is good with the story, isnt it? It means that I was hooked and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride right to the end.
Lyrical writing and an adorable heroine. I loved seeing Lissy come out of her shell! Add to that spark and heat with a sexy hero who manages to radiate alpha while never being bossy or mean... All together a fantastic book!
Holiday Affair is the first book I have read by Annie Seaton, and I have to say I will look for more!! I absolutely loved this book!
The book starts out with Lissy McIntyre on vacation. She needs a break from being Dr. McIntyre history professor and to say goodbye to her Gramps. While on a sailing ship she meets the oh so sexy sailor/ drifter Nick, and the chemistry and sparks fly immediately. She decides to let herself have a fling, because she knows she will never see him again. BUT fate has a plan of its own!! The new history professor and her new neighbor turn out to be one and only Dr Dominic Richards "Nick", the man she has to co-author the paper he has been doing research on in the islands. Can they put aside their attraction and fighting long enough to get the work done?? Can two people who don't believe in lasting true love find love with each other before it is too late?
These to have some very witty moments and they have some smoking hot chemistry. I loved the progression of them from lovers, to almost enemies, and then to HEA.. This was a beautifully written love story. Often times these are rushed, and this one was allowed to progress beautifully. I highly recommend this one! It's the perfect book for curling up with a glass of wine.. :)
A Holiday Affair is a contemporary romance book that I appreciated and enjoyed reading. In this story, Lissy is on a holiday of sorts, traveling after laying her grandfather to rest, when she meets the good looking, but arrogant, Nick. From the start, there is chemistry between them, but their relationship starts off pretty rocky. However, they succumb to a liaison, neither expecting to see the other again. As it turns out, Nick is the new professor assigned to work in Lissy's department at the university, and they share the same cottage. Both want to deny their relationship, but the attraction proves too strong.
The main storyline of A Holiday Affair is the tumultuous relationship between Lissy and Nick. Both characters have issues and hang ups to overcome, and they drive each other (and the reader) a little crazy with their constant hot and cold. Nick is especially bad about his hesitation. On one hand, he is hot for Lissy and wants her, but on the other, he is adamant about not having a relationship. But, both Lissy and Nick manage to learn and grow through the book and I kept reading, and hoping that they would both get it together.
I really liked the Australian setting in A Holiday Affair, it's different and beautiful at the same time. The islands and beach settings provide a romantic backdrop for the romance, even if the lovers in the story don't always realize it.
The romance in this book was very believable. The hang ups that the characters felt were easy to identify with and understand, even if they were irritating at times. I was pleased with how the story wrapped up, but there were a few loose ends, namely, whatever happened with Lissy's mother. I would have liked a little bit more development there, but I am still happy and content with the story as a whole.
With A Holiday Affair, Annie Seaton has written a believable, enjoyable romance. A Holiday Affair is a book that I would qualify as a "beach read." Readers who enjoy stories that explore characters fears and hesitations in relationships will like this book. As an enjoyable read, I give A Holiday Affair 3 stars.
Ever wished you could just get away from it all, let your hair down and lose yourself in a wild fling with a gorgeous man and never have to worry about annoying things like repercussions? So did Lissy. Sorry, I meant Dr. Melissa McIntyre. When this sedate assistant university professor threw caution to the wind and indulged in a holiday fling, she got more than she'd bargained for. Never see the bloke again? Think again! What if he's waiting in your office on Monday morning, your senior colleague with whom you'll be working on a special assignment for the next couple of months and yes, your promotion is on the line? Even better, what if he's your new next door neighbour too? Not to mention very closely related to the nice, stable man whose marriage proposal you're seriously considering? It really doesn't get any worse than this now, does it? As the Americans say, go figure! Go girl, let's see you get out of this one!
Apart from the very intriguing premise, I was completely captivated by the vividly descriptive writing of Annie Seaton. I've never been to the South Seas, but I feel as if I've been there and back after reading this. I could taste the salt in the sea air and feel the sunshine on my skin. It's an exhilarating read, to say the least. An unshamedly romantic piece of women's fiction which deserves to be the holiday read of the year. I particularly enjoyed reading about the girls' night out. It reminded me of my single days. Just the kind of book you'd love to discuss with your friends.
This is the first book I’ve read by Annie Seaton and I do have to say she is one damn great author. Her descriptions made me want to go on a holiday on a sail boat and find my own sailor. Annie writing is good the story flows extremely well and I have to say I really enjoyed Holiday Affair.
We meet Lissy McIntyre who has just lost her grandfather and has decided to take a vacation on the open sea. During her trip she meets Nick who she assumes is some sexy sailor/drifter and she ends up having a fling with him. Knowing she will never lay eyes on him again. The chemistry between Nick and Lissy is great and you know reading this that somehow their paths will cross again. Fate works in mysterious ways!!
Back at home the new history teacher slash neighbour is none other the Dr. Dominic Richards aka Nick.
Well let’s say this does not go over smoothly at first and the chemistry is off the charts. Can two people who won’t admit they want each other find their happy ever after?
This is a must read if you enjoy a funny, sexy romance novel this is the one to purchase. I have rated Holiday Affair a 4 star rating and would recommend all my friends/followers who enjoy romance novels to go out and grab yourself a copy I loved it.
This book was not to my taste. I will admit that. There was nothing strictly wrong with the writing but as someone who has been reading in the genre for a while there were certain aspects of the book that were quite predictable, though I won't name those here as I do not believe in spoilers.
Lissy as a character, and if she were a real person, would not be someone that I like at all. There is a sense of manipulation about her as she plays games with Nick and he does the same in turn. She is many different people all at once, hiding behind masks and using her mother's relationships as a reason to keep behaving the way she does.
The secondary characters were interesting, especially Tomas, who I would've liked to learn a bit more about.
All in all this is a quick read, a quick romance and good for those that like something other than slowburn. I would've preferred a more in depth look at their work lives as it was quite quickly explored.

I just loved this story, from the romantic settings to the well-drawn characters to the snappy dialogue and beautifully written love scenes. It's a really romantic, sweet and sexy read--highly recommended!
Needed a feel-good romance book after two crime thrillers, and Goodreads popped this up on my Recommendations screen. I started reading it with low expectations (Mills & Boons expectations), but it surely turned out to be better than that. In quite a short book, the author managed to build the world well. I liked the vivid descriptions of the settings. The strong ambitious character of the protagonists was also appealing. And, the romance was .. well .. not bad. There were irritating moments when it felt the love-hate relation dragged along a little too much. But, overall, a nice light read.
Lissy is a by the books kind of gal and Nick a fly by the seat of your pants type of guy. So what happens when the control freak and the rolling stone land miles from home and in one of the most beautiful settings. The battle of wills becomes an affair to remember. Will it lead to happily ever after or end of the line heartache> Holiday Affair is what I've come to expect from Ms. Seaton. An escapade into the familiar, but a journey into the unknown. Flirty, fun, fantasy.
When I started reading it, I really wanted to love this book. The settings appealed, as I've holidayed at Hamilton Island and have been to the other places mentioned. In my past, I've fallen for my boss, been confused and cried a lot - just like Lissie. But I couldn't fall in love with this book.
Maybe I misunderstand the current academic hierarchies within Australian universities but I did know them once, when I was married to a professor. SO - I couldn't get my head around a heroine who was already a PhD, but not yet a senior lecturer, being an underling for a hero who was still working to obtain his PhD and yet, miraculously, was already an associate professor. It jarred on me the whole way through the book, and detracted from my willingness to accept the authenticity of the behaviour or feelings of either the hero or the heroine. Sorry, Annie Seaton!
This book is filled with twists and turns which make it hard to stop reading. Lissy is very relatable and engaging, and Nick is HOT and charismatic.
I also enjoy it because it's fast-paced, and the first chapter had me at the edge of my seat. The characters seem real... they are flawed, which I like. She's still hurt because of the loss of her grandfather, which is something we all can relate to. And Nick is still attracted to her even after he finds out she may be engaged to someone else, soon ( I don't want to give it away ).
I could go on and on... gorgeous scenery, sharp dialogue... even the secondary characters are multi-layered and add to the plot.
A real winner! I can't wait for Annie Seaton's next book! :)
Really didn't like this one. I was so confused over who felt what. One second they're wanting each other, the next one of them (or both) is suddenly all pissy about something, then they ignore each other! Lissy's 'almost' relationship with his brother was just stupid. All wrapped up too quickly, too dramatically and too sucky. Disappointing...
There was something missing for me. I give it a 'meh'. Maybe a lack of character development or the over all flow? I can't put my finger on it. Looking at the reviews I am surprised that this read did not grab me. Oh well, to each their own, right?
This is a really good story I love the setting from the country to the sea wonderful and Nick and Lissy are great, love the family connections. Nick and Lissy had a lot to overcome with trust issues, I really enjoyed this one.
Who knew a fun holiday affair could complicate your life so much! This fun sexy read is a wonderful story that shows us just how complicated life can get. Well written with great characters. You don't want to miss it. Recommended read.
thought it was a good story really loved Nick. was so pleased throughout the entire story until the end. I felt it fell a little short. I wanted a little more detail not just an abrupt ending.
Lissy was no more prim and proper Dr. McIntyre. She could imagine the reaction of her history colleagues at the University if they could see her in backpack mode. She was now at the end of her first day of ehr sailing adventure. Then she went to take a picture of the sunset and she saw a sailor interrupt her picture. He was up the mast. Then when he came down toward ehr he was singing a bawdy sea song and Lissy laughed and finished off the last two lines of the song with him. The man introduced himself as Nick as he sat with her and got them both a beer to toast the sunset. Lissy was a history professor and she had left the university to settle her grandfather’s ashes and then flown to the tropics for a restful holiday to absorb her grandfather’s death. Nick was one of the best looking men Lissy had ever seen. As Nick left to help his friend with the boat he turned and called Lissy “Angel Face” and to save him a dance. Then a girl came up and told Lissy she was the “chosen one” and why. Lissy now thought Nick was a jerk and she had no intention of falling into his bed. She also thought one absent backpacker father was enough for her family. But she felt Nick needed to be taught a lesson. Lissy grandfather had been the only stability Lissy had ever known. Nick had noticed Lissy standing apart from the group and she had kept to herself most of the day. Nick had also seen her brush away a couple of tears. Nick thought a fling with Lizzy would be the perfect way to end his last trip on the boat , no commitment, no strings just the way Nick liked it. It was time to get back to work and finish the report or his funding would dry up. The recent calls from his family indicated it was time to go home and be the dutiful son and brother for awhile. The close bond that held him, his sisters, and brothers was fostered by their mother. Nick went to share another beer with Lissy and give it a while then admit there was more to him than just a drifter in the Islands. Nick who rarely backed away from a challenge was intrigued by Lissy. He had avoided this sort of situation for years since Olivia had dumped him for a richer prospect, He swore a pretty face would never suck him in again and ah had lasted ten years with his playboy style life. It had been two years since Nick had been home. Nick and Lissy slept together the night before they were both supposed to leave because of an early plane Nick didn’t wake Lissy to say goodbye or even leave a note. Lissy had a friend-Tom- she would go to dinner with on Friday nights she even paid for her own dinner. But this time Tom told Lissy he wanted her to think about Tom as a prospective husband as he had a life plan and wanted to be married by thirty five. He also asked her if she would accompany him to his family’s house this time as his brother Dom was coming home and all the family would be together and it would be the perfect time for her to meet them as they didn’t all get together that often and Lissy agreed to meet Tom’s family. Also Dom was the new professor and actually would be Lissy boss. Then at dinner lissy found out Dominic was actually Nick she had spent the night with. The one who had the final say if Lissy gets her promotion she had been trying for. Also the cottage that Lissy lived in had been turned into two apartments and Nick would be living in the other apartment. When Lissy went to work Monday she found out she was to be the research assistant for Nick’s project. Nick can’t seem to stay away from Lissy, he had never bees so attracted to someone before. How were they ever going to work together and live side by side? This was a very pleasant, short, enjoyable read that had everything it needed in it for the story to be complete. I loved Nick and Lissy together and how they reacted to each other. This made me chuckle at times. I felt bad that Lissy had lost her grandfather but then she met Nick when she was at the islands. I Liked the plot and pace also. This was a predictable but I did still really like it. I was glad Tom had found Jill and wasn’t hurt by lissy especially with her and Nick. KI love dhow Tom’s- and Nick's- mom accepted Lissy and was there by Nicks side when he found out about Lissy accident. There was a little drama between Lissy and Nick but it just added to the book. I liked the characters and the ins and outs and I recommend.

REVIEW: 3.25 stars-HOLIDAY AFFAIR is the first instalment, and December 2017 re-release, in Annie Seaton’s contemporary, adult AFFAIR clean romance series focusing on the Richards brothers-Nick, Tomas and Alex Richards. This is university history professors Melissa ‘Lissy’ McIntyre, and Dominic ‘Nick’ Richards’ story line.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Nick and Lissy) HOLIDAY AFFAIR, originally released in March 2012, follows the building but acrimonious relationship between university history professor Melissa ‘Lissy’ McIntyre, and Nick Richards, a one night stand that turns into something more. Following the death of her beloved grandfather, Lissy McIntyre indulges in a well-deserved South Pacific vacation in the Cook Islands where she will come face to face with the man who pushes all of her buttons including the insta-lust reaction to a beautiful face and sexy body, but what happens on holiday, stays on holiday, until Lissy discovers that her new neighbour and professor is none other than her South Pacific one-night stand. Enter Dominic ‘Nick’ Richards, the man with whom Lissy will fall in love but not before spiteful accusations and bitter words are said in anger and fear.
The relationship between Lissy and Nick is caustic and biting. There is some definite palpable sexual energy whenever the two are together but too many instances of misunderstanding, miscommunication, and misinterpretation leads to heartbreak and misery as our leading couple dance around one another throughout most of the story. Name-calling and petulant emotional behaviour makes for some uneasy moments between our leading couple. The elephant in the room is someone Nick knows only too well. The $ex scenes are all implied.
We are introduced to Nick’s brothers-Tomas and Alessandro ‘Alex’ Richards, as well as their mother Tessa, sisters Sophie, Allie and Lucy, and a large number of nieces and nephews.; Lissy’s neighbour and landlady Mrs. Mac, and co-workers Jenny an Clare.
HOLIDAY AFFAIR is a quick read; a well-written story about two people who have yet to grow up. Their emotional outburst and childish behaviour leaves questionable doubt as to the real issue-imagined or otherwise. Their irritating demeanor is cringe worthy-for two intelligent and well educated university professors their conduct and actions, especially towards one another is adolescent and aggressive. The premise is entertaining if not frustrating; the romance is awkward as it falters in the face of their childish behaviour; the characters are colorful but annoying.

Lissy McIntyre would rather settle for mutual respect in a relationship than love, so Nick Richards would be the last person she should get involved with, especially when he's not the settling down type. However, the moment she meets him, she finds it hard to stay away because of the sizzling chemistry and their heated kisses. Will Nick realize that Lissy is his Ms. Right before it's too late, or will he let his past cost him this chance at happy ever after?
What a delightful read Ms. Seaton has delivered in this first book of her Affair series, which provided the perfect combination of emotion, chemistry and tension that had me reading quickly determined to discover whether these two would get their happy ever after, considering this couple's relationship keeps moving one step forward then two steps back. Seriously, they come off as enemies half the time, as she knows Nick isn't a man ready to settle down and give her the kind of love she deserves.
As for the dialogue, it was riveting and intense due to the way the main characters interact with each other and their back stories. The hero has been hurt by past relationships and isn't willing to be hurt again, which is understandable. Yet, at the same time, the heroine is good for him. Will he see that Lissy is his Ms. Right before it's too late? Moreover, I liked the hero's confidence and his playfulness, as he sways the heroine's decision. She should be wanting love, not to settle for mutual respect and just liking someone. While the heroine, she's hard-working, independent, and I liked how determined she was to resist the heroine, although it seems inevitable that they'll give into their chemistry sooner rather than later. I also liked how much of a challenge the heroine presented for the hero. Nick's charm doesn't work on her as much as he hopes.
Overall, Ms. Seaton has delivered a really good read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was powerful; the romance on the sweet side; and the ending had me worried for one of the main characters, but had me so happy because of the words the hero says to the heroine to prove to her that she's the one for him. I would recommend Holiday Affair by Annie Seaton, if you enjoy the enemy to lovers trope or books by authors LE Rico, Jody Holford, Charlee James and Barbara DeLeo.
Honestly I don't like Lissy, she reacts way too quickly and gets mad at the simplest things and doesn't listen when other people are trying to talk to her. She also judged Nick right from the start when she didn't know anything about him and put him off a bad guy based on the way he dresses and their first interaction together. Lissy is also leading on Tom and telling him that she's willing to be his girlfriend even though she can't stop thinking about Nick. She's always using people just to get a reaction out of Nick and it's so disrespectful for all the guys that she's having dinner with.
She was so disrespectful towards Nick when he was asking her to give them a chance. She flat out denied them anything saying that it would hurt them in the long run, when they have never even done anything. The only things that Lissy was hurt by is her overreactions of what she assumed to be true. Nick has never lied to Lissy about anything and never hurt her in any deep harmful way, but Lissy is already saying how all the pain she's feeling is from their relationship. Even though Lissy hasn't allowed them to even have a relationship from the beginning.
Have had this on my tbr for awhile now with finally getting into it. Not my first time in reading this author I knew I was in for a wonderful adventure. This centers around Lissy and Nick who will take us on this passionate trip. Even a professor can come out of the norm and have at it on holiday. Then the tables are turned and he is in her area with now this author really has my attention. Especially when what started out as a fling seems to be turning into something else you have to see where they go. We are given perfect picture on how things can change and out of that growth. The pace is just right with you getting a lovely dose of romance to fill you up.
