Ellie Bullen's hugely popular blog Elsa's Wholesome Life is a veritable explosion of colour, sunshine, coastal living and delicious plant-based recipes. Her first cookbook features more than 100 of her go-to dishes, from nutritious granolas and powerhouse smoothies to flavour-packed salads and soups, hearty curries and burgers, and drop-dead delicious sweets.
A qualified dietitian and nutritionist, Ellie explains everything you need to know about adopting a plant-based diet, including how to:
- get enough iron, vitamin B12 and calcium - achieve the right balance of carbs, proteins and good fats - shop smarter and get more organised in the kitchen - enjoy a lifestyle that is better for you and the environment
Ellie's food is fresh, flavoursome, nutrient-dense and - above all - fun. If you ever needed a reason to eat less from a box and more from the earth, this is it!
Normally with cook books, there are recipes that look ‘meh’, but this one is packed full of delicious, exciting meals. I’ve started working my way through them, and they are amazing! Super easy and nutritious. My Christmas spread is coming entirely from this book.
Low fat and low salt AND full of flavour AND made from ingredients that you can buy from your local supermarket- well except for nooch but every vegan should have some.
I have made about 5 recipes from the book and the dhal and green soup twice. I never thought I'd need a new dahl recipe, but it has fresh flavours and the green soup is just so easy, tasty and full of goodness. Make sure you have friends round to share the Mac No Cheese as it's comfort food bliss and you won't be able to resist the just a little bit more.
There are some layout errors in the book so I couldn't score it 5 otherwise it is the most practical, healthy and tasty vegan book on my shelf.
This is by far the best vegan cookbook I have encountered. Beautiful photos and plentiful recipes that aren't just the basic 'cashew cheese'. I also enjoyed the forewords which included correct info about proper nutritional health, unlike some that promote naturopathy as the only way. The pages of the book are also of amazing quality and it feels like a treasured item in your hands.
Wonderfully put together with beautiful, colourful photos of Elsa’s wholesome life and her wholesome food!
The recipes and very hit and miss and are not true, tried and tested directives you can count on. You need to add at least 4 x the salt to the savoury dishes. She’s no Ottolenghi but she does what she does best, inspiring people!
I love this book for inspiration and for presentation suggestions not for the recipes themselves. They seam to be created from the anticipated end result backwards and would benefit from more refinement.
Still a book I will keep and enjoy and continue to be inspired by.
