This is an isekai story where the MC transmigrated to Camelot, the country where King Arthur’s legends took place. I think it’s quite clever for the author to set this isekai at Camelot instead of just some made-up video games or novels or even other famous fairytales because an average Japanese reader would probably know about the main characters but not necessarily the details of the legends. Throughout the series, it keeps emphasizing that there are a lot of similarities between the legends and this isekai but there are also a lot of differences, which keeps MC always guessing whether he could rely on his spotty memory of the legends to make any decisions. So it gives readers a sense of both familiarity and uncertainty.
Then there is the love triangle that involves Arthur and Lancelot, probably one of the most famous love triangle ever. A story that features Arthur and Lancelot would not be complete without their love triangle. Obviously, MC serves the role of Guinevere in this triangle (although there is also a character named Guinevere in this series). I always find reading love triangle irritating but this series makes it more palatable because even though MC did have a small sex act with Lancelot early on, once he fell in love with Arthur, he consciously avoids giving any false signals to Lancelot, unlike so many shoujo manga. And the spinoff series that sets in a universe where Arthur has died seems so interesting that makes me look forward to that. But still, I’d prefer a threesome romance among MC, Arthur and Lancelot but that would be a repeat of the author’s previous Rose series…….
I was a bit disappointed by how the villain Morgan is handled at the end. In vol 6, the Fairy King said although Morgan splitting her soul was wrong but she was not all evil, and told Merlin that Merlin asked the Goddess for making him become the child of Morgan before he was born so he could save Morgan. But at the end, her soul got merged but was quickly killed right after that. Technically, MC’s mom got her merged soul, but she seemed just like before, only the good part of Morgan’s soul and none of the evil parts. So the readers don’t really see the full character of Morgan, both her good and bad. And why Merlin wanted to save Morgan before he was born remains unclear. I also want to see what Morgan was like before splitting her soul and how she met Neimas.
I’m confused by the book titles in this series. Arthur is implied to be a god from the titles but it’s never implied that he is a god within the story. Why??
Overall, this is a solid series, consistently good but just not as riveting as her Rose series and Bloodline series, both of which under the SHY imprint. I have read several series by this author. I don’t know whether the editors at SHY just do a better job of guiding the author or the author reserves their better stories for SHY, it seems like their best and most epic series are all under SHY but it’s unfortunate that they haven’t published new works under SHY imprint after the end of Bloodline series a couple years ago.
