The ten-year-old local amateur detective, Hawk McCoy along with his friends Sandy Sue and Tom Buford run a group called the Indispensables in the town of Izlet Bay, Georgia for a bit of cash during the summer holidays. The group provides various odd services in the neighbourhood: dog-walking, lawn mowing, poo petrol, and cleaning. The Penthiads, a group of mythological beings, are back in town disguised as the Penthas sisters and undertake some significant jobs within the community. When strange lights are photographed from satellites over a Georgian field that lies a mile from the Penthas house, it captures the attention of high-ranking officials in the capital. A group of government bureaucrats from Washington arrive in town to investigate the matter. Equipped with his Super Sleuth 100 and Fingerprint Guide for All Occasions, Hawk has a perfect opportunity to unlock the mystery of the mysterious lights and sharpen his detective skills.

Laced with humour, the fun detective story moves at a steady pace as Kincaid interjects a mild dose of fantasy element with mystery. The narrative is smooth and the tone of the book is light. The southern town with its balmy summer days makes for a cozy setting.

Hawk is a well-drawn protagonist—he emerges as the most interesting character as well: he is clever, resourceful, and a go-getter. Though other members of the fifth-graders’ group do not get much space in the story, the author creates a delightful backstory for the trio’s Indispensables club that offer odd jobs to various people in the neighbourhood. Charming in an old-sort way, the novel presents a convincing portrait of typical childhood exploits in a southern town. The Indispensables’ endeavours delight and bring a fun element to the story that pulls the reader in—the goat, Ester’s escapades keep the mood jovial and the little terrier, Mutt’s puppy antics are a laugh riot.

Through the exploration of the Penthas sisters’ significant jobs, Kincaid offers a thoughtful perspective on environmental concerns and issues. While the resolution falls into place too easily, the search for the answers allows Hawk practise his detective skills expertly, and at the same time, it helps the plot reach a satisfying conclusion. Readers will enjoy getting to know the Indispensables and wait eagerly for their next fun-filled exploit.

Hawk McCoy: The Penthiads, by Mary T. Kincaid, is a fun detective story set in the balmy heat of summer in Izlet Bay, Georgia. While the author intends her audience to be middle-grade readers, this is a story that recalls detective novels of old - and will also appeal to adults who enjoy mystery, sleuthing and a bit of mythology as well.

Hawk is a fifth-grader who is spending his summer, along with friends Sandy and Tom - doing odd jobs and looking for hometown mysteries to solve. The kids form a group called the Indispensables, and provide services from dog-walking to cleaning to serving meals to locals for a bit of pocket change. This harkens back to a childhood summer from years ago, and as I read I imagined this might have been how my grandfather spent his summer days in a southern town.

It doesn't take long for Hawk to start finding clues that will eventually help solve the intriguing mystery of the Penthiads, a group of mythological beings who come to Izlet Bay disguised as the intelligent Penthas sisters with important jobs within the community. When strange lights are photographed from satellites over a Georgian field that lies a mile from the Penthas house, government investigators from Washington show up - and Hawk finds himself in the midst of what may be the most exciting mystery in the history of Izlet Bay.

A page-turning mystery that had me itching to go find some other old detective novels, Hawk Mcoy: The Penthiads is a story that will appeal to readers young and old. It's fast-paced, has likeable and interesting characters - and is refreshing for both its intellect and educational aspects (science & engineering in particular). And readers may be in luck, as the ending hints at more Hawk adventures to come.

💫A book cover is equally important to the content mentioned inside it. I generally enjoy reading all sorts of books but few books attract me no matter what is the subject of the book. ‘Hawk McCoy- The Penthiads’ is one of its kind which lured me to read it as I found it a very light book with just 105 pages. I finished it in 2 hours.

💫This is a work of fiction. All of the characters, names and incidents, organizations, and dialogue are the products of the author's imagination and I totally loved this quote. After finishing the book I went back to the initial pages to check whether it was actually her imagination or was she telling a true story. How beautifully she has mentioned each place, time and date in each chapter from which it seemed she actually encountered it during that time and then made a diary entry of it. I can call it as a diary and not a book. It’s a marvellous work of the author and I have never read something like this before.

💫It’s a diary about Hawkins, ‘Hawk’ as he likes to be called whose I’m going to learn how to collect and read fingerprints this summer. This is quite an interesting hobby to pursue. Apart from having unusual hobby, Hawk along with Sandy Sue South and Tom Buford used to help neighbors with their odd jobs like dog walking service and and the poo-patrol, they named it as ‘The Durrett Street Indispensables Handiservice’. Will Hawk get a case to resolve by benefiting from his 200 fingerprint collection? Find out more by reading this very interesting story.

💫Mary T Kincaid has written some more children stories like Mortimer, Little words of magic and they are all so nice and interesting. One can buy her book series for their children to read them during bed time

A week before I was just scrolling social media. I saw this book names “Hawk McCoy”. When I saw the cover of this book it made me really curious to read the book as I have always loved mysteries. As you see in the cover it’s really basic yet attractive. Then I got to know that it’s a preteen book. I was never a fan of book rather I used to stay away from book as I felt they were boring until I was grown. So, I really wanted to read this book and wanted to know what exactly is a preteen book. When I started off the story was really interesting like I never thought it would be this way. The story is based on a boy named Hawk McCoy who is just 10 years old and is an amateur detective. The story and the vibe of the is so light that I actually enjoyed reading the book. I didn’t feel like I was reading a children book. Apart from this I actually got to learn a lot from Hawk McCoy. Moving on Hawk McCoy wants to solve the mysteries so the life gives him opportunity as the Government investigators travel to Georgia to investigate the mysterious lights seen in their satellite photos and the place where they stay that is Carousal Inn this is where Hawk McCoy vacuum and cleans the glass as he is keenly interested in learning about the fingerprints. The author has also put an element of friendship for children as McCoy’s friends. I would say this can be a very nice read for children who are under 15 as they may get into that zone and they may also relate to their amateur dreams. This can also be a perfect gift for children. Being a children book the language and the words were very simple and the reading felt really effortless.

This narrative is a veritable charmer. I enjoyed it greatly, while I normally do not read the storeys of children. The storey 's protagonist is a 5th grade boy named Hawk McCoy. He is a teen detective, and elementary school student at Izlet Bay.

🔍 Summer holidays have begun and Hawk is all excited. This summer he'll be learning how to capture and decipher fingerprints.
The children form a community called the Indispensables, who offer services for a bit of pocket change from dog walking to washing to delivering meals to the residents. This harkens back to a summer of youth from years ago, and as I read this may have been how my grandfather spent his summer days in a southern city.

🔍 It doesn't take long for Hawk to begin to discover hints that will finally help solve the enigmatic mystery of the Penthiads, a group of mythological creatures who come to Izlet Bay disguised as the smart Penthas sisters with significant neighbourhood work. When odd lights are shot from satellites over a Georgian field a mile from the Penthas building, Washington government agents turn up-and Hawk finds himself in the middle of what could be the most fascinating mystery in Izlet Bay history.

🔍 Hawk 's characters are really popular with his friends. His curious and friendly personality came out perfect so I just liked the character of Hawk.

The cover of this book is perfectly designed and the title is apt for the story.
It is a diary about Hawkins, ‘Hawk’ as he likes to be called who is learning how to collect and read fingerprints in summer time. This is a really interesting hobby. Apart from this Hawk along with Sandy Sue South and Tom Buford used to help neighbors with their odd jobs like dog walking service and and the poo-patrol, they named it as ‘The Durrett Street Indispensables Handiservice’. Will Hawk get a case to resolve by benefiting from his 200 fingerprint collection? To know the answer of this question you have to read the book.

This book is a work of fiction, but the author has described all the details so perfectly with details that it is hard to believe and seems that it is a true story. This is something extraordinary and this is the first time when I have read something like this. This is a short and light read which can be completed within a few hours. The language is simple and lucid. The writing style is very engaging and exciting. I will surely recommend this book for children and if you like reading short reads.

𝑻𝒊𝒕𝒍𝒆: Hawk McCoy: The Penthiads
𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓: Mary Kincaid

𝑴𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘:
The Penthiads is a great Children's Detective story.

The main character is a fifth grade boy Hawk McCoy who has a detective mind since childhood. During his summer break, Hawk McCoy had a plan to move closer to his dreams. He gonna learn how to collect and read fingerprints. He also has his Fingerprints for all Occasions Guide.

Hawk and his friends did dog walking job so they can earn some money. The story is so intense that once you start reading it, little McCoy will catch your attention and you will able to put down the book only after finishing it.

This book took me down the memory lane and reminded me of all the mischief and wild things I had done with my childhood buddies. If you love reading books based on mystery then this one is for you.

Hawk McCoy and the Penthiads is a light-hearted book for preteens. The protagonist, Hawk, is a real go-getter in the children’s business world of dog-walking, and he’s looking to expand someplace where he could maybe get a chance to solve a mystery. His summer project is collecting fingerprints, and he already has a catalogue of 200 different kinds of footprints, categorized by shoe type. He’s as ready as he can be to solve a real case, if only one will present itself.

Unfortunately, the text would benefit from hiring a good proofreader for punctuation and spelling.

Still, it had some nice use of metaphor and a likable main character. Should appeal to fans of the old Encyclopedia Brown books, if you like a dash of fantasy added to your mysteries.

Hawk McCoy is a fifth-grader who, along with friends Sandy and Tom, is enterprising and likable. He works hard at pet-walking, goat assisted ground-clearing and other chores to earn money so he can finance his sleuthing kit. Hawk wants to be a real detective.

While improving his fingerprinting skills, Hawk stumbles upon a summer mystery involving the Penthiads and works hard toward a solution.

This work appears to be the first in a possible series. It is engaging, with credible characters and some amusing moments. It reminds me of bygone mystery-solvers, such as Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys.

I was--sadly--distracted by the poor editing of the text. Spelling and punctuation errors should be addressed before continuing the series, and will improve the overall reading experience.

I really enjoyed the story, and would recommend it to readers 10 and up.

The Penthiads by the author Mary T Kincaid is a Children's fantasy. Hawkins McCoy was all set for summer vacations as it was his last day of fourth grade. Young detective McCoy want to learn to read and collect fingerprints during the summer. To make some money during summers, Hawk and his friends provide various services to people like poo patrol, dog walking service.

Hawk has his Fingerprint Guide for all occasions. He wants to solve a real mystery to be a good detective. He along with his friends discovered about the Penthiads sisters in the town. Hawk is an intelligent kid. His character is my favourite.

The length of the book is just 100 pages so you will be able to finish it in a single sitting. I recommend this book to children who loves to solve mysteries.

This is a story for middle-grade kids. I think it does a great job of showing things from the kids’ perspective.

The story centers on a group of kids who just finished fifth grade. They are good kids, working hard and trying to figure out the complicated thing called life. They do odd jobs around the neighborhood which means they get on well with the grownups in town.

Then there is a gaggle of ancient but benevolent deities called The Penthiads. Don’t worry, they use their powers for good. Some agents from a shadowy government agency come snooping around but they are soon tricked into reporting it was just swamp gas.

Yes, these are familiar themes, presented in a format accessible to young readers. This would be a great book for kids to read.

A great children’s detective story!

What a great children’s detective story! It made me chuckle a couple of times and reminded me of all the exploring my friends and I used to do in our younger years.

Hawk (the tireless, inquisitive main character) and his friends, are likeable children who help the town people with pet problems and chores and readers will easily relate to them. This is a must read for curious children who love mysteries and stories set in small communities.
