Love in a Sandstorm blew me away! It was, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and heartfelt stories I've ever read. Heart touching from very first word to last.
Yes, I love all this series, but I can honestly say this book surprised me in the best way. This is how every second chance romance, specially between a married couple, should be portrayed, with endless love and loyalty to the person you made vows to. Yes, it was an emotional roller coaster ride, and yes, I dearly felt Jenna's pain and Sean's internal battle. I couldn't have asked for a better development, better it really was all about them, just the couple, with their struggles, their accomplishments, without unnecessary outside interference, and SO very realistic and heart touching. I immediately feel in love with Sean and Jenna, as spontaneously as they did themselves. Zoey York wrote it brilliantly, given how the story keeps us hanging on to every word, never deviating and always interested, with the looks into their past, on how they met, fell in love and got married, mixed with the battle the were living in the present! It was beyond second chance perfection! Just perfect. Period. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

I liked the idea of this book: couple marries after whirlwind courtship followed by H being injured in the war and shutting down. h has to chase him down and convince him that she really is in it "for better or worse".
The first half of the book has some time jumps. We follow the H/h from the present (he's been injured and is being a major a-hole) and the past (the H/h meet in Turkey at a refugee camp and spend 2 weeks in Spain and fall in love). I didn't mind the time jumps and I really liked the parts where they met and fell in love. There were no easy solutions to their problems when it came to their relationship post-injury. The H was really horrible. (He never bothered to contact her at all to let her know he'd been injured and just had his pity party where he was going to let her go for her own good *eyeroll*) The h was in it for the long haul and tried to be patient and give him space. He does finally come around but I wish he had groveled a little more. He really hurt her. I do like that the h starts seeing a therapist to help her deal with her emotions around his accident. I wish the H had sought help beyond talking to his brother and friend who were veterans.
By the end, the H/h have resolved most of their problems and they are in love and so cute together. I've only read one other book by this author and I was left feeling *meh* just like this book. I guess maybe her writing isn't for me.

This book is one of the most heartfelt stories I have read in quite some time. Your heart will be full from the moment you begin to read. The journey of Sean and Jenna is powered purely by heart and my heart was so full. It was
enchanting
and
romantic
at every turn. It's a story of growth and acceptance, endurance and perseverance. It's a story of hope and love.

Pine Harbour, Ontario is the fictional setting for a small town contemporary romance series by indie author Zoe York. Some romances in this kind of setting veer into stereotypical territory – think gossipy neighbors, the coffee crowd at the local diner, high school sweethearts, etc.. This author has set her series apart by featuring tried and true tropes (reunions, best friend’s siblings, single parents) amidst more serious events such as losing a spouse to drug violence and the emotional repercussions of a tour of duty in the military. In Love in a Sandstorm, Ms. York takes the military theme a step further with the return home of a soldier who is learning to live with a brain injury and the woman who pledged to love him ‘in sickness and in health …till death us do part’. It’s an emotionally charged but very satisfying read.
Jenna Kowalczyk is a Canadian midwife, working with Doctors without Borders in a transit camp in Turkey. She’s been there for four months, and the reality of life in the camp has been an eye-opening experience. Fatigued, somewhat homesick, and experiencing her share of doubts about her abilities on a regular basis, she takes each day as it comes. While indulging in a food break during her latest labor and delivery, she meets a friendly, happy Canadian soldier in the mess hall. It’s like a breath of fresh air for her tired spirit.
Sean Foster is on duty in the transit camp for the upcoming visit of the Canadian Prime Minister who is stopping in with a diplomatic delegation on their way to a base in Northern Iraq. Reaching for the same apple in the food line as the cute hospital worker in front of him leads to a little flirtation and a quick and easy conversation, cut short by her return to duty. Sean’s got two weeks of much needed vacation coming in forty-eight hours, but he finds himself wanting to spend more time with this woman who has captured his interest. Jenna grows increasingly concerned as the days go by without contact until the bottom of her world falls out when she finds out through a newspaper article that Sean’s been injured in combat and has returned home. Six weeks after Sean’s injury, Jenna shows up on his doorstep. The happy-go-lucky soldier she married has been replaced by a bitter, brain-damaged man who believes she’s better off consigning their marriage to a fanciful dream and going on with her life without him. Can she convince him that the vows they made and the love they share are worth fighting for?
The author has said in some social media posts that this story has a personal inspiration. Her husband is a currently serving Canadian soldier, and her children were delivered with the aid of midwives. This enables her to have a unique view into both main characters that is reflected in their realistic portrayals. The story goes back and forth between the present and the past as it explores how Sean and Jenna fall for each other (including some sexy love scenes) and whether their love is worth fighting for. Jenna truly believes that Sean meant for them to be together or she’d never have married him. It’s up to her to prove the vows they spoke are genuine. But it’s no easy task.
The Sean she finds living in his brother’s house back in Ontario is not the man she married. He has a serious brain injury from a mortar attack on his convoy, and his constant nausea, vertigo, and tinnitus means even a simple trip to the bathroom is a hellish affair. He knows it’s only been a few weeks since his injury, but he has no interest in anything but being unconscious to escape the misery. It’s heartbreaking to read. Jenna’s arrival doesn’t change the fact that he’s a shell of the man she married and he wants her gone. But she shows a steely resolve, moving into his town, finding work, and showing up on his doorstep time and again to prove to him that she’s there to stay.
I appreciate that the author doesn’t try to sugar-coat the reality of Sean’s injuries and how they affect his psyche. Equally, I like that Jenna, while trying to remain strong in front of Sean, also has periods of doubt as to whether she’s doing the right thing by sticking around. Sean’s family is supportive of him but they also respect her role in his life as his wife, which strengthens her resolve. Sean’s recovery is a day to day affair and he isn’t miraculously healed by the end of the story. He learns to cope, to accept help physically and psychologically from medical professionals and to accept his new physical limitations. And his reconnection on an intimate level with Jenna requires honest communication and acceptance of how their sex life must change but can still be equally exciting and satisfying.
There are a couple of lines at the end of the story that sum up the theme of this emotional and heartfelt romance quite nicely.
“Jenna’s taught me something pretty significant this summer. We don’t always get what we want, you know? … But we can make what we get something worth wanting.”
Jenna and Sean’s seemingly fairytale romance quickly gets taken over by real life heartache, but it’s Jenna’s perseverance in the face of adversity that leads them to a strong and committed marriage as a result. Love in a Sandstorm shows the highs and lows of a whirlwind romance and the strength and commitment needed to ensure a long lasting relationship.

I am not sure I have ever read a better returning from war book, to be completely honest. The flashbacks were so beautiful and I loved how completely Sean and Jenna were a TEAM by the end of the book. Truly recommend this book.

Another exceptional book from Zoe. I love this series and this book was a little different from the usual Pine Harbor setting, since the story starts overseas with Jenna and Sean ( yet another Foster brother). Jenna is a midwife working with DWB in a refugee camp and Sean is a Captain in the Canadian Armed Forces. He's in transit when he meets Jenna over breakfast but the two are taken with each other. They steal time as time allows and though Sean is only there two days, looking forward to two weeks leave, Jenna has time off coming and he spontaneously invites her to take a trip with him.
The chemistry between these two was off the charts and well done. We see them really develop a relationship in that first bit of the book and the rest unfolding during a few flashbacks, more like triggered memories during the present day story. They marry in Spain while on vacation. He returns to duty as does she. She doesn't hear from him, only to find out a month or so later he's been injured seriously and is back in Canada recovering. She leaves her post overseas and returns to his hometown, showing up at his brother Dean's, whom we've met. Sean is living, no scratch that, subsisting at Dean's making everyone's life a living hell including his own. He's not only severely injured and trying to cope with his brain and physical injuries but has also had a stroke. He suffers from severe migraines and severe vertigo and other TBI symptoms. He never contacted Jenna.
You can imagine Dean's surprise when she shows up and announces herself as his wife. Sean doesn't want to see her and acts like a total jack hat the first few month. With Jenna now in the picture and she doesn't give up on him, the brothers and a best friend stage an intervention of sorts and Sean wants to try to get better, agreeing to go to physical therapy and work hard on his recovery. Jenna is worth it.
Pine Harbor is a tiny town and everyone knows everyone and Jenna is warmly welcomed there. She soon meshes into the family and daily life including getting a job, the commute is long but worth it.
It's a great story to watch unfold and grittier than Zoe's norm. Which I loved. She puts forth some of the often overlooked casualties of war, the psychological aspects and the ripple effects on family, loved ones and friends.
Not meaning to sound trite here, but this story is a great love heals a multitude of woes and in this book that's the truth. Her unconditional and consistent love for him, reminded him who he was inside, the man who fell in love with Jenna.
Great story and Matt is up next and can't wait to see what kind of trouble he gets into.

This is a really good book and is really deliberate in what it does with Sean returning from war and how much work he has to do to create a new life for himself, and the work Sean and Jenna have to do to find their new normal. I also probably wasn't in the best headspace for some of the message of this story, which is not the fault of the book at all and just a matter of timing. Would definitely read more of the series.

There were parts of this book that were great and parts that dragged for me. The recovery is very long and detailed and while that is realistic, I don't want to read THAT much about erectile disfunction and job hunting. It's just not romantic or escapism, which is why I read. I skimmed most of the last 25% and couldn't wait for it to end which is never good, but both Sean and Jenna are very likable and their whirlwind romance was sweet to read. So 3 stars for the parts I liked.

Zoe York never ceases to amaze me with her writing . " Love in a Sandstorem" is no exception the story in short was phenominal. Zoe brings her characters to life and easily intergrates real,life situations into heartfelt romances.
Capt. Sean Foster and Jenna Kowalczyk Meet in a refugee camp in the middle east and over a two week leave to Italy fall head over heels in love and marry. With Sean's return to the frontline and Jenna,s return to her medical duties at the refugee camp their honeymoon is over ,but they have a future to look forward to ; until,Sean is injured by a roadside bomb.
Sean's injury will test there marriage vows and strain their relationship as much as Sean will try and push Jenna away this strong women is willing to work to save both Sean and their marriage.
As Ms York takes you through the couples troubles and Sean's ongoing health issues you can see and feel the love that is always at the center of their relationship and all tastefully done!

I read the other books in the series earlier this year. This one is the most poignant.
Jenna and Sean met on vacation, had a whirlwind romance and married in two weeks. But he's in the military and so he had to leave, to go back on duty. Their marriage was so sudden and unexpected that they had told no one about it, so when he was badly injured in the war and sent back to his hometown, Jenna didn't find out until she saw a news report. She packs up her life and moves to Pine Harbor to be with her husband, but... Sean was not prepared for her to see him this way.
It's a very nuanced story, well told. Sean is recuperating, has to go through rehab, can't walk without assistance and has a lot of lingering issues from his injuries; he's angry and bitter and lashing out at people, not dealing well with the physical pain, the loss of mobility and the end of his career. He doesn't want Jenna to see him this way, doesn't feel that he has anything to offer her, and although it was painful to see him pushing her away, it felt very real.
Jenna is a SAINT. I almost wish she were less saintly, but she doesn't let Sean's continual rejections put her off. Doggedly, she sticks to the commitment that she made to him and eventually, as Sean's physical condition improves, he also starts to get over the rage and self-pity. He starts to see beyond himself and to think about Jenna's feelings. It's almost like he allows himself to love her again, and finally allows himself to also accept her love.
I especially loved that the author was real about how Sean's injuries affected them in the bedroom. His body won't cooperate, even though he wants her, and they have to be brave and communicate about it openly. This is very rare in a romance novel and it isn't instantly or miraculously cured, either.
This story is very emotional and the book is a definite keeper.

I love Zoe York, and I love her Pine Harbor series. The plots tend to be mostly predictable, and this book is no exception, but I don't really mind predictability in a romance novel. It's still fun to watch them get there. I enjoyed this book, but it's not among my favorites in the series.
I waffled between 3 and 4 stars for this book... so I guess maybe it's 3.5? "Why not 4 stars?" you ask. Well... This was a good story, but it could have been better.
First, Jenna is a little too perfect. She barely loses her cool maybe once or twice while her wounded husband is being a total ass to her for weeks on end. And I could accept that, if only she had some other annoying traits or something to make her a little less perfect. But no. She snaps at him once or twice and that is the sum total of her flaws, and that bothered me a lot. It made their relationship seem really unbalanced.
Second, Sean's recovery just all seems to ... happen. At first it's not really happening, and then it does. And maybe that's how it goes in real life (?) but I was kind of waiting for some kind of setback or conflict in his road to recovery once he finally got moving, and that never really happened. Even the resolution to his struggle with impotence seemed (dare I say it?) anti-climactic. By the time Jenna finds out he's having trouble with that, he's miraculously able to perform.
And if I think too hard about it, I'll come up with other little things that didn't quite ring true, but I don't want to. Because I enjoyed the story overall and I want to stay excited for the next Pine Harbor novel. Which I am.

A pretty sweet small town romance with some interesting twists. There’s really two parts to this book and for the first half they’re intertwined. The initial romance overshadowed the more emotional reunion and recovery.
The second half is more about the reconnection, and worked better being on its own. It definitely gets bonus points for dealing with the hero’s injury in a realistic way - he isn’t magically cure by lurve. But is does feel pretty mundane. There’s not much plot going on.
That being said I did like this book. I also liked that it briefly touched on the author’s other series (I had no idea Zoe York and Ainsley Booth were the same author).

This story is definitely different from all of Zoe York's books with tough subjects while living the rehab from the inside. Eventually the hole thing is interesting but I was afraid it would turn very bad.
I think it stretched too long but maybe it was deliberate to give the sensation of how hard and fastidious it is to recover from war injuries.

This was Very Recommended and I can see why - it's different, there were some major obstacles, and some things you really don't see often in romance. Can't give four stars though because I had some quibbles but it's been a while and I honestly can't remember exactly what they were.

Liked that this was a bit different, the story flowed nicely, still mostly brain candy, but refreshing to have an interesting plot device.

This book came and knocked me on my ass in the best way. I didn't know about this series or author until Katie Reus sent an email recommending this and I am so happy she did!
I started this yesterday and finished it in less than 24 hours. Every little break I got I read. I read this story before bed and it was the first thing I was thinking of this morning. That alone tells you how captivated I was by Zoe York's writing.
This book is about Jenna and Sean. She's a midwife working with Doctors Without Borders in a refugee camp and Sean is a Captain in the Canadian Armed Forces. They had an instant attraction that grew into more during their short serendipitous time together. I usually read romantic suspense so I don't know why I was expecting this story to be similar to that, but it was different and refreshing in the best way.
The book juxtaposes the now, with chapters from the past showing how they met overseas and their 2 week vacation together. You also find out what happened with Sean and see both characters process everything. One of the things I loved was how the author explained everything with the town and the families before the book started. I felt safe as a reader and Pine Harbour is a masterclass on how small towns should be written. It was so comforting. I also loved how accepting the community was of Jenna.
Yes the book starts off kinda "insta-love" with how they met but Zoe wrote these characters so well that they were very dimensional. You got to see insight into both of them being surprised at how soon and strong their feelings for eachother were and how they fell in love. There were moments I teared up. The book has angst but it was good angst and never felt superficial to me. I could empathize with Sean a lot. I have chronic pain issues and know that frustration and initial upset at mourning your old life and body. Jenna was smart, sweet and patient. I loved her friendship with Grace and that she went to therapy. It's nice to read a book that tackles that and non-judgemental female friendships. This book had capable main characters that weren't perfect but they tried their best and by the end I really felt they were a team.
One of the things I loved most was the quote "We don’t always get what we want, but we can make what we get something worth wanting."
I will absolutely be checking out more books from this series & Zoe York.

OK, I just received a kick in the pants! What for, you ask? Love in a Sandstorm did a major as…er butt kicking on me, reminding me of why Zoe York is one of most favorite authors in the world!
I was gifted with an advanced copy of this book for my honest opinion. And let me tell you this, YOU ABSOLUTELY CANNOT GO WRONG READING THIS PHENOMENAL BOOK!!!
I loved watching the whirlwind romance develop between Sean and Jenna. Jenna’s mom would definitely say it happened too fast, but, when you know, you know. They take a vacation together and decide to marry by the end of it. They agree to keep the marriage a secret and return to their regular lives, until the end of the current assignments. This is partly to protect Jenna, as she is married to an officer, as she serves as a midwife for Doctors without Borders in Turkey. However, tragedy happens and Sean is severely injured. Jenna does not find out until he has returned home to Canada. Because of his injuries, Sean has decided he is going to let Jenna go, and let her find someone she deserves. But, Jenna has other plans. She moves to Pine Harbour and is determined to prove to Sean that their marriage is worth fighting for.
This book is a panty melting, emotional roller coast ride of a book. This phenomenal book gives the reader some insight on what families and friends go thru when their loved one returns home injured. Ms. York has that way of drawing her readers in in a way that makes them see absolutely EVERYthing.

It had been awhile since I'd last read a Zoe York book. I'd forgotten how good she is. I’m so glad I was offered an ARC in exchange for my honest review. I loved it!
Zoe York has the ability to seemingly effortlessly bring fictional characters to life. Whenever I read one of her books, I am absolutely convinced these are real people and she's just relaying their stories. Her prose flows smoothly and is reminiscent of a conversation with an old friend. There's a certain sense of familiarity that's so comfortable and judgment-free. And her stories are so much more original than much if the trope out there, with complicated and utterly human characters.
Zoe York is not afraid to tackle tough subjects, whether it be the loss of a spouse and the subsequent transition to single parenting, or the aftereffects of a traumatic brain injury in military combat. Here is where she really shines, addressing complicated and emotional issues with sensitivity and wisdom, and in the process, enlightening the reader about about issues s/he may have never otherwise considered.

Told through a series of past and present events, Love In a Sandstorm is a must read for Military Romance lovers everywhere.
We get the story of Sean and Jenna. Sean, an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, and Jenna, a midwife volunteering at a refugee camp, meet while Sean is waiting for the arrival of the Prime Minister. They embark on a whirlwind romance. When Sean is injured, Jenna fights for what was once between them. Jenna was such a wonderful woman, and just a joy to get to know. She's strong and steady. She accepts help when she needs it, but it doesn't detract from her independent spirit.
Sean was a romantic, who goes through something traumatic. He changes but is still true to who he is. He and Jenna have an undeniable connection.
Overall, Love in a Sandstorm was an addictive must read. The characters are realistic, their story is amazing. What touched me the most throughout this book was the relevance and sensitivity to current events. Sadly, things described in the camps aren't fictional, and the author handled that with care.
Bottom Line: Love in a Sandstorm is a FANTASTIC must read. It's the story of how the end of one dream, could possibly be the start of another.

rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents. OMGEE.. .what an emotional read. there were parts that I couldn't keep a dry eye reading it. We meet Jenna, a midwife working with Doctors without borders in an overseas camp. she has been there 4 months and she's still shell shocked from it. one morning at breakfast she goes to grab an apple at the same time a male hand goes for the apple. Jenna is speechless with the owner of that hand. We then meet Sean, a Captain in the Canadian Armed Forces and he is.taken with the little Canadian midwife and wants to get to know her eventho he starts his vacay right away. both wanting to get to know each other Sean invites Jenna to Spain with him and there starts their whirlwind romance. once they depart Sean is injured and Jenna has no idea. Sean is a miserable bastard and Jenna shows up in Pine Harbour unannounced and shows up at Sean's bro' s house to announce she is his wife. Sean doesnt want Jenna around to feel sorry for him and that shes better off without him. Jenna has other plans. can they find love again? will Sean relent and stop being a debbie-downer? will Jenna say the hell with it and go back to work? A great story that takes you on a very emotional rollercoaster and gives you an idea of what army couples can go thru! another great book by Zoe!!! keepem coming!!

This book is so amazing!
I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get into this particular book in this series, simply because I wasn't sure how Zoe York was going to handle Sean's medical condition. But I just love how she allowed him to adapt to his new life. Chronic vertigo has many causes but it is something that every person who has it has to learn to adapt to. This book is so well written and so emotional and yet you can't help but fall in love with Sean and Jenna. I was cheering for them during the good times and crying along with them during the rough times. I love this book and this series. 💖

I've been counting down the days to release for this book, and I was not disappointed! Thank goodness for holidays-- I bought it this morning and finished it this afternoon :/.
While not my favourite Zoe York book, definitely my favourite in this series, I can honestly say that this series just keeps getting better and better. Jenna was honest and real, a well defined character in her own right, and Sean was well written-- a lot of heartfelt, raw moments in this book.

I was so excited to read Sean's story! It was perfect. I laughed at parts, teared up at parts, my heart broke and then I got filled with joy and happiness at parts. Sean and Jenna meet in a transit camp in Turkey. He is a Captain in Canadian armed forces ans she is a midwife working on the camp. After a two week whirlwind romance Sean and Jenna get married in Gibraltar. While still in Turkey, Jenna finds out that Sean has been injured and travels half way around the world to be with her husband, only to find out he hasn't told his family about her. Sean is wallowing in self pity and wants nothing to do with her. The Foster brothers and their friends/family immediately take her in and in typical Foster brother fashion help kick Sean's butt until he begins to come out his funk. Jenna never gives up hope and their journey will suck you in from the first chapter, and you won't be able to put it down until you are finished!!!

Very sweet romance between a Canadian soldier and a midwife. Loved how much she loved the H even when he was pushing her away. He got wounded and never let her know even though they were recently married. She found out and followed him and loved him even when he was an idiot. He was a great hero and I loved the handling of his issues from the explosion. Very cute story. I haven't read the others but I will go back and give them a try.

It feels like it's been a long time since I visited Pine Harbour but this book definitely made the wait worth while!! It's a fantastic story of love found, love lost, and love rediscovered!! Sean Foster and Jenna Kowalczyk met a world away from home and under some tough circumstances. Yet, one 2 week leave and a passionate whirlwind of events tie these two together forever. Regardless of how many times Sean tries to push her away, Jenna is in it for the long haul. Her undying determination is what gets them to their HEA.
This one needs to be on everyone's must read list. I highly recommend it.

Sean and Jenna were everything! I loved how their love story started! It was so sweet to see how it all began and how hard they worked through it all! I’m so happy they had each other! Sean and Jenna might just be my favorites! ❤️❤️❤️
