"There’s no quicker way to get yourself killed than trusting someone in the black." ~ Caleb.

Caleb Shepperd knows Fran has her own motives for helping him escape prison, but he’s not about to let a little thing like past betrayal stand in the way of his next paycheck. Until he’s forced to meet with the sexy and psychotic pirate, Adelina Cande. They’ve met before. When he seduced her, cleared out her credit account, and left her for dead in the black.

Caleb figures Adelina holds a grudge when she plants a bomb on his ship and demands he steal a fleet freighter for her, that is, if he ever wants to fly again. Get him drunk enough and he’ll try anything once, but this time, he has to balance his own greed, with the needs of a vengeful pirate and the scheming of his dubious second-in-command, Fran. What could possibly go wrong?

In the heart of Chitec headquarters, the synth known as #1001 enlists an eager young technician to aid in her escape. But it’s not freedom she wants. It’s revenge. The memories of a life that don’t belong to her demand she finishes what she started. She believes she killed Caleb, now she's targeting Chitec CEO Chen Hung, and not even the hopeful technician can dissuade her.

Synthetics don't make mistakes.

She thought she knew the truth.

She was wrong.

Another excellent novella in the 1000 Revolution SF series. If you like your characters morally ambiguous with a foul mouth and trigger happy hands, than look no further. I liked these books because they are different, they have unexpected twists and the action does not stop. The world building it not that important here so do not expect too many description of planets and different cultures. In exchange, there is sex, drugs, violence and all that stuff.

Previous rating: 10 ridiculously measly stars.
New rating: 12 stars. Because DUH and stuff.

And the moral of this reread is:

Yummiest High Security Harem-worthy synthetic human being ever + < fault >Failsafe disabled< fault > + most deliciously fished up asshole of a smuggler this side of the Nine Systems (and possibly beyond, methinks) + < fault >Failsafe … Protocols …< fault >fault, fault, fault— + most lusciously damaged and lusciously vindictive second-in-command ever + < fault >Run, One Thousand And One. I thought that book 1 was pretty FANTASTIC but this? THIS? What. Know. Don't. Write. I. To. Can't. Don't. How. Feel.

You people should really be grateful here. Because yes, Pippa DaCosta did it again. She successfully managed to shut me up once more. Meaning you won't get one of my never-ending, silly, rambling reviews. So enjoy it while it lasts and thank Pippa DaCosta.

Bye now.

Haha. I'm so funny.

And you're so naïve.

I said this would not be one of my never-ending reviews, I never said it would be a short one. Ha.

Here we go.

You don't want to read this story. No you don't. If you like cheese that is. And corny stuff. And lovey-dovey stuff. This is not for the romantic at heart.

You want to read this story. Yes you do. If you like gloriously fucked up characters with no morals and forever dubious ulterior motives that is. They lie. They use each other. They hurt each other. They're looking for revenge. They will do anything to get what they want. They kill. Oh yes, they kill (blood and gore, yay!). What a perverted, psychotic, damaged bunch. I love them all.

Caleb Shepperd. Such a magnificent, twisted, unapologetic asshole. I'm SO in love. Kidnapping you for my harem. Poof! Gone!
#1001. The killing machine. The synthetic being that shouldn't be. The impossible made possible. Fake made real. The ghost in her own machine. Bloody hell I love you.
Fran. Best fuckin’ pilot this side of the nine systems. Bitch extraordinaire. Drug addict. Damn, you're so cool.
Adelina. Trigger-happy, mentally deranged space pirate. Hell yeah.
Bren, James, Chen Hung. Expect the unexpected. That's all you'll get from me. Because spoilers ← This is, after all, Pippa DaCosta. What you think will happen, won't. What you never thought would happen, will.

Why do I love all these characters so much? Because they are complex. Because they cannot, under any circumstances, be trusted. And because you never know what fucked-up scheme they are going to come up with next.
“Are there no limits to who’ll you’ll fuck to get your own way?” “None.”
Hahahahaha! YES!

Oh, did you want to know what this story is about? So sorry about that. Not going to happen. You'll have to read it to find out. Muahahahaha how I love keeping you in the dark. Actually, it may not look like it but this is actually me being very kind and considerate. Yep. Because if I told you about the story I'd spoil your fun. And I'm not like that. No I'm not. So you should really be thanking me here. Yes you should {insert collective "thank you" here} Hey, no problem. You're very welcome.

Well you know what? Today seems to be your lucky day. I'm in a pretty good mood so I'll add a quick Girl From Above crash course to this review. This story is about: synthetic killers. Retribution. Spaceships. Memories. Prison planets. Sex for all kinds of fucked up reasons. Revolution. Pirates. Being broken. Swearing and cussing and cursing and swearing. Souls. Resetting protocols. Drug lords. Assets. Blowing bubbles. Sex workers. Survival. Long story short: this is absolutely mind-blowing.
The thrill lifted me higher and stripped me down to my most basic functions: To run. To survive. To make them suffer. I’d do anything to live. Chitec wouldn’t have me. I am #1001 and I will survive, at any cost.”
Now I have to say that no matter how bloody amazing-amazingly fantastic-fantastically brilliant-brilliantly awesome this story is, I have one very serious problem here. The next instalment is due for release in October 2015. October 2015??!! Are your kidding me??? Have you no heart Pippa DaCosta??!! There's no way I'll survive this long. I need another fix. Now. Withdrawal symptoms are already kicking in. Damn. I'm doomed.

Okay, I am sadly aware that this is a very crappy review. So you know what you should do? Forget about all that nonsense I just wrote. It doesn't do the story justice anyway. What next? Read this book. You need it in your life. Yes you do.

"You're the fixer, but nobody is going to fix you. You must realize that?
A smile skimmed my lips. "Nice. You can put that on my gravestone."

description

Almost too amazing to be true.

Sorry, but I need to jump on the next one. I guess the reviews will come out all four together after I fin- oh, who am I kidding, I know I will never be able to write something decent about this book. Really, it is already astonishing that I managed with Betrayal.

The only thing I have to say (again) is:
Fran you *inserts colorful insult(s) of your choice* stay. away. from Caleb.
I really don't want them together. No nope never.

It's not often that a second book in a series (or serial) will get a higher grade than the first from me. This one does. And earns it. Partly because it blew through all my expectations and gave me something that I wasn't expecting - more than once.

Everything I said in the first one still holds. Our protagonists are not heroes - they're not good people, and yet....I still root for them. I think that probably says more about me than it does about them.

There's a HUGE twist at one point in the book. Something I did NOT see coming, and still really shocks me with its simplicity and I-should-have-known moment. Then there's the moment when I start to complain about something, thinking that one thing is going on, thinking that it should go a different way, and something even better than I imagined happening, happened. Hell yes. Loved it.

There's a lot of sex, or near sex, in these books. It's usually angry sex, without a lot of "good" emotions behind it. But it's freaking hot as hell. And, to quote my friend Navessa:
Also, I figure in a near-lawless space setting, sex would be as common as violence, which seems to be the case in these books. Now that I think about it, I tend to feel that way about any setting in which humanity breaks down.
It's a good point, and I definitely agree. Violence and Sex are BIG in this series. So is self-recrimination, questionable actions, double-crossing, and lawlessness. For a society that's supposed to be "perfect" with Fleet and Chitec...it's pretty fucking grim.

And the ending? I saw it coming, I knew it would happen from the moment the scene started, and still - I read that last sentence and groaned that I have to wait until December for the next book (and Spring 2016 for the concluding book). I needs it, precious. I needs it, NOW.

The 1001 revolution reminds me of Firefly if it was just a bit edgier, angrier and had more hate sex in it.
“I knew revenge like the ghost of an old friend."

Caleb, Fran and 1001 are so much fun. None of them are trustworthy and I’m pretty sure each one has betrayed the other in some way at some time. Hell I think that two of them almost got the other killed a few times now. But it is great to watch how they are together and try to figure out who is going to backstab who next.

In Escape Caleb has to get out of the eat or be eaten (literally) prison he is in. Fran needs to find a way to escape Fleet and get back into the black or her addiction will become very known to and 1001 has to find a way to escape the company who created her before they decide to destroy her.

It is a fast paced ride where enemies can be friends, friends can be enemies and pretty much anyone can double cross you at any time. There are some great twists and by the end I couldn’t decide who what the most treacherous of the group. Probably Caleb, possibly Fran or perhaps 1001 is going to out twist them all.

2nd read - July 2019
3rd read - April 2021

After thoroughly enjoying the first book in this series I couldn't wait to dive back into this world and spend more time with Caleb and #1001. The story picks up not long after the last one ended, #1001 has been caught by Chitec and is about to be decommissioned, she believes that she murdered Caleb and although she was only carrying out orders she feels very conflicted about what happened. When a lab technician agrees to help her escape #1001 knows this is her last chance to make her father suffer for what he did to her and she will do whatever it takes to get her revenge.

Meanwhile Caleb has also been captured and he is struggling to survive on an inhospitable prison planet. His second in command, Fran, may have come to his rescue but Caleb knows that she can't be trusted and the deal she made with a pirate family to save him has ended up dumping him out of the frying pan and into the fire.

If you thought these characters made questionable choices in the first instalment you've not seen anything yet, they all have their own agendas and loyalty is a word that most of them don't know the meaning of. Any alliances they make are fleeting and only last until a better offer comes along so no matter what kind of friendships you think they have you can never be quite sure that their bonds will last. It's just so much fun to read about characters who are so morally ambiguous, I may not always agree with their choices but Pippa DaCosta always does a good job of making their decisions believable.

Caleb is a loveable rogue and I just can't resist him. He's not a good guy, in fact he does some truly horrible things, but he does have his own code of honour and he never claims to be something he's not. #1001 is probably my favourite though, she thinks of herself as completely inhuman but from her thoughts and actions it's obvious that deep down inside her human side is still very much in control. She longs for revenge against the people who wronged her but she also craves friendship and wants something more from life.

I really don't want to say too much about this story apart from to warn you to expect the unexpected. Nothing is what it seems and there are plenty of twists to keep you guessing. I have absolutely no idea where the story will go from here but I do know that the next instalment will be jumping to the top of my to read pile the minute I can get my hands on it!

I thought this would suffer the second book syndrome but noooooooo it's still as awesome as the first book and Caleb is still so clever as ever. I feel like I should hate him because of all the bad things he's done, but I just can't make myself feel that towards him. I WANT HIM. And #1001, I LOVE YOU STOP FEELING ANYTHING FOR CALEB AND BE MINE PLEASE I DON'T EVEN CARE THAT YOU'RE A SYNTH. BUT I WANT CALEB TOO PLEASE BE MINE YOU TWO. (I AM NOT EVEN MAKING ANY SENSE BUT CAN'T YOU SEE IT'S WHAT THIS BOOK HAS DONE TO ME)

Still fucking perfect.
__________

Soooo, if you're looking for a hero to root for, a romance to make you swoon, or a story to make you feel warm & cozy....

Move the hell along, ain't none of that around here!

What do we have? Heart-in-your-throat action, rip-your-guts-out betrayal and the muddy dregs at the bottom of what passes for a human soul.

A knight in shining armor, Caleb Shepard is most definitely not. He makes me squirm, sometimes in good ways, but more often in... 'dude, who the fuck are you??' mode. He's an uncomfortable MC at best, and at worst you wish somebody would take his head off with a rusty razor.

Almost.

Because despite his baseness, Caleb has 'something'. I don't know what you could call it, maybe nothing more than the sick fascination we all feel watching the aftereffects of a car wreck. But I couldn't tear my eyes away.

1001 thinks that she killed Caleb when she wakes in a Chitec lab, so next on her list, is you guessed it, Haley's dear old dad. She may not actually be Haley, in a literal sense, but this is one synth who wants answers fast. What she finds out tho....well, it'll make your eyes damn near pop out of your head.

BTW, Caleb-Joe ain't dead. He's just in Asgard. No, this isn't Thor's home sweet home, it's the most god-awful prison in the nine systems. Fran, that back-stabbing you-know-what, breaks him out. Fran is another one that makes you just go....WTF!

Seriously, are there any redeeming people in this story?? Oh yeah, there's the synth-cum-dead-girl, but even she's starting to give me the heebeejeebees! Because if you're deemed not an asset, watch your ass or she just might take it out...

Now what the hell am I gonna do until Trapped is out??

In this second installment of DaCosta's Girl from Above series, she once again delivers a tale steeped in cynicism and ambiguity, where each and every character has questionable motives and even more questionable morals.

Caleb and #1001 both find themselves as prisoners; he's back in Asgard, while she's back at Chitec awaiting decommissioning. Both need to escape if they are to survive. With the help of some friends, some new, some familiar, both are back-in-black on very different missions. Caleb has undertaken a new job with an old acquaintance from his past, while #1001 and her ally are merely looking for safety from Chitec. With as big as the nine systems are, they ironically find themselves back where they left off -- all together, and still fighting the supposed enemies.

In this installment, several characters have changed sides. Some who were once though of as the "good guys" have now crossed over to the darker side, while others who were masquerading as the "bad guys" have gone back to the hand that feeds them, the "good guys". Although those terms are certainly misnomers in the truest sense, as there really is no good or bad. Everyone in the nine systems, it seems, is out for themselves and willing to do whatever it costs to make sure they come out ahead. It's a cutthroat universe filled with murder and betrayal, fraught with the obvious danger that accompanies both.

Both Caleb and #1001 continue to be the highlight of this series for me. Both are fighting a war within themselves, trying and failing to figure out who they are. #1001 is once again trying to grasp both what and who she is; with no more orders to follow, she's realizing that she's not simply a machine infiltrated with thoughts from a dead person, like the 1000. She's more than that, and she's slowly starting to recognize that she is indeed as different as everyone says. Trying to separate the "her" from the "it" inside, that's causing her quite a lot of distress. Trying and failing to figure out her identity without the internal programming there to guide her.

"There are no more orders, save my own. I don't know if I'm real, or if I'm one man's wish or another's programming. I don't know what I was made for, and I don't know if I can trust what I feel. I care for two things: self-preservation, and that you see the truth of me. Whatever that may be."

Caleb himself is also fighting his own personal battle. From all appearances, he seems to be a cut-and-dry asshole. But that's merely an appearance. If anyone were to finally get past his defenses, if he were to let anyone in, chances are they'd see he's so much more. Sure, still an asshole at heart, but there's still a little red on his mostly black heart.

Fuck. I bowed my head. I couldn't lose it. Not yet. Don't think. Don't think about her crazy-ass smile, or how she tasted, or the way she only wanted to do right for the people on that rock she called home. She had it coming. This was her fault, not mine.

That's not to say all's right in paradise. There's even more backstabbing promised in the next installment, if that ending is anything to go by. And there's one major surprise I didn't see coming concerning #1001 and her maker, and I'm so anxious to see how that plays out.

Bottom line -- read this series, it's one I highly recommend, especially if you like shades of grey. Characters with unclear motives, ones who may or may not stab their own mother in the eye because she said no more candy. You honestly don't know if any of them would, or wouldn't, and that's what I love best about this series.

4.5 "I ♥ Caleb" Stars

Picking up shortly after where it left off in book one, Caleb Shepperd, the roguishly handsome space pirate whose nonchalant attitude hides a cunning intelligence and guilty conscience, needs to find a way to earn quick credit after his escape from prison. Meanwhile, #1001, the Chitec synthetic with the soul of Caleb's ex-girlfriend Hayley, is doing everything she can to avoid a meltdown, both literally and figuratively.

I really don't want to get more specific. I'm being deliberately vague because, honestly, I don't want to give any spoilers. There is a bombshell revelation in this book that is... Whoa!

Suffice it to say, the characters are put into a lot of critical situations and, when push comes to shove, their reactions give you a lot of insight into where their true loyalties lie.

Once again, Pippa DaCosta delivers a fast paced read with engaging characters and twists and turns I never saw coming. I can't wait to get my hands on the next one. Unfortunately, now I have to wait until October for the next installment.

In Pippa DaCosta’s highly anticipated sequel - Girl From Above: Escape - it’s hard to tell who has your back from who has it long enough just to stab you in it. A lesson several key players in the story have already learned the hard way. As for the rest; they’re about to get a rude wake-up call. Fool me one, shame on me, fool me twice I deserved to get fucked over, right?

Welcome to the nine systems, where the most devious, ruthless and paranoid players rule, despite Fleet’s feeble efforts to establish control. It’s a lawless world. If you don’t have the backing of powerful crime families or the Fenrir Nine… Well, then you’re essentially attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis. (Don’t understand what I’m referring to? Well, take a look at this little clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3jxd... )

Escape picks up a few weeks after the events that took place in book 1. Shepperd and 1001 have already learned Sheldon’s lesson the hard way. Shepperd has been shipped back to the prison planet known as Asgard, while 1001 finds herself at the mercy of Chitec’s technicians on Janus space station. Both are facing the same (lack of a future.) The captain and the synth girl are both about to be shut down for good – by whatever means necessary. But help comes to both in the form of two unlikely aides with motives as questionable as their own…

And that’s just the start… There’s more bloodshed, danger and betrayal to be had. Asgard hath no fury like a woman/space pirate scorned. And that’s before he even meets her family. Oh my, Caleb…

In Escape, 1001 and Shepperd paths cross once more, but not before they both uncover some unwelcome news regarding people close to them. Needless to say, neither take the news well, but it makes for wonderfully entertaining scenes for us as readers.

I marvel at Caleb’s ability for betrayal, he truly is a cynical bastard an a true anti hero - I can’t say I like him all that much at the moment. Yes, he’s been formed by his callous surroundings, but it was his own cowardly acts that brought him to that kind of existence in the first place. You can’t help but think that despite all of 1001’s errant protocols, it’s not the synthetic girl, but rather the human man who has got a few loose screws. While Caleb continues to live by the fight or flight (or kill and betray) response, 1001 is the one who shows the most “human” behavior. But where does the human end and the machine begin?

“Listen to your soul.” – “I don’t have one.”

You might even say she’s experiencing some sort of existential crisis:

“I am #1001. I just followed orders. Now I don’t know what to do.”

… Which could of course have something to do with the secrets that are hiding in the Chitec towers. Wow! That was some turn of events. Mmmm, deliciously sinister future prospects, people! And I have to say, I’m a little relieved, while this series is rife with betrayal, certain acts of betrayal are just too heartbreaking:

“We are alike… Too many memories. Too many mistakes. Failsafes and protocols. You are one stubborn old man’s mistake. “

Let’s just say there is a reason why mr. Hung lives by the old adage: “Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead.” And wow, this secret is a whopper. Poor Hailey.

“I was his mistake. I would make him pay.” … And now it’s up to 1001 to right the wrongs…

Now let’s see how Caleb fares in regards to the latest demand from the Fenrir Nine. Will he be able to redeem himself – or will his untrustworthy modus operandi reassert itself yet again? Only time will tell. But one thing’s or sure: Payback’s a bitch!

Pippa purposefully writes her stories in the grey area where things are morally ambiguous; good people do horrible things, and bad people do good things. There’s beauty in horror and horror in beauty.
She’s adept at writing characters that somehow manage to be both attractive and repulsive at the same time. Her storylines tend to be more ambiguous and can raise more questions than answers

*And on that note: I wish to thank Pippa DaCosta for gifting me with an eArc in exchange for an honest review – just in time for my holiday!*

Come rain or shine, Escape is the perfect summer companion for everyone who’s got their heads in the clouds - or indeed in outer space. Bring it with you on vacation or enjoy it within the comforts of your own home. Either way, you’re in for a little sci-fi morsel of a story that you’ll enjoy just as much a I did. Escape is an awesome whirlwind of a book that has just the right amount of delicious darkness and more than 50 shades of gray.

Captain Shepperd, you're one twisted SOB. And I love you! When I don't want to strangle you.

From the first book I got the impression that Asgard (a prison in the Nine Systems) is a hellish place but having the chance to experience it made me realise that I lack imagination. I shudder at the thought of that place and I tend to agree with Commander Shepperd that his brother is in serious need of therapy and I hope that he'll realise he is going down a path that will leave him with no one by his side. And since I'm shipping him with both Fran and #1001 I kind of want him to not alienate everyone.

Much to my surprise I liked Ade Cande. She's nuts no doubt about it but in a strangely adorable if rather psychotic way. Maybe something's wrong with me and I'm the one that need therapy. Joke aside Ade was one of the most interesting characters in this book and I was Shepperd's reaction though gives me hope that he is still salvageable as a human being. And as the story gets more complex and we get closer to learning what Chitec is planing I know that he'll need both his humanity and savagery learned at Asgard to survive and get back at Chitec's CEO.

*grumbles* This is my second attempt at writing this review because, for some reason, Goodreads didn't save it the first time around. I had Dean Winchester GIFs and everything!

Anyway.

You know what? I will read anything Pippa DaCosta writes. ANYTHING. I might have mentioned it before but I don't like Sci Fi for some reason (yes, I've seen Star Wars but I didn't like it—GEE, DON'T SHOOT ME!) yet I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH!

Following Girl From Above: Betrayal, Fran, along with the assistance of Adelina, a pirate, helps Caleb escape Asgard. He knew they both had their own motives for doing so. Adelina is a pirate that Caleb had previously duped. As in, he slept with her, took her money, and left her for dead. She wants him to steal her a fleet freight. On the other hand, he didn't trust Fran, his second-in-command. Meanwhile #1001 is at Chitec quarters, faced with a shocking revelation (that totally blew my mind!).

I love #1001. She is a most unique character. Considering that she is basically a robot (a synth), she has a lot going on for her to keep me hooked. I can't wait to see how she will turn out as the series progressed! There has been some development for her, and it is clear that she is not like most the rest of the synths. She is a defective synth basically, but the answers are yet to come.

Caleb! God! It's like Akil all over again. Half of me hates him while half of me loves him. He is one of the most complex characters I've ever read about. I'm still questioning him at this point, so I hope the third book I've made up my mind about him. Hate him? Love him? What?

Girl From Above: Trapped will be released in October this year. October is still a long way from now!

This book totally took me on a wild ride! It was an explosive read that kept me at the edge of my seat for what is to come!

4 1/2 stars. Treachery is the theme. Nothing is what you think it is. Everyone has an angle.

There was no way to predict anything. Each of the characters were on their own at the beginning. I’m not sure how I thought this would play out, but I certainly didn’t think it would end the way it did. Unusual alliances were forged while others were destroyed.

If you like stories all about love, honesty, and loyalty, well this isn’t the book for you. Love is involved in the story, but it’s not a romance. No one here is truly loyal because they are only loyal when it benefits them. None of them are honest; they’re barely honest with themselves let alone with other people.

Caleb did some morally questionable things. Yet I still liked him. He was guilt ridden and in a constant state of emotional turmoil, which made it easy to understand why he lashed out sometimes. One thing he did towards the end really shocked me although it really needed to be done.

#1001 was more caring than the average synth, but viewed things in terms of black and white. She is a killer but definitely isn’t heartless. She was struggling to find her own way in the world, but it is difficult for her to do since everyone wants to use her for their own purposes.

Fran is the most conflicted character. Trying to remain loyal to people with opposing views was turning out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined. I want to hate her, but I can’t because she honestly believed what she was doing was right.

I wish more sci-fi was written like this because I would read it a lot more.

You thought you had it all or at least some of it figured out by the end of the first book, right?

Think again.

Twists, turns, revelations, characters interactions, the stakes are higher than before and they have NO INTENTION of slowing the ascend.

I love 1001, I love Caleb's complexity and I want to know more, read more.

Really, my head just went Ka-boom.

The only thing I'd really want a hint about (add I am a romance reader) is a hint about the romance and about Caleb's feelings and heart he is complex and unreliable. He is an ass but he is not as bad as he thinks. Just like how 1001 is not as simple as she thinks. She is human and complex and wow.

many thanks to the ever wonderful Pippa Dacosta for providing me with a review copy in exchange for an honest review

When I finished the first book I thought I had it all figured out- at least the big mystery and the overall story arch.

Turns out I was wrong.

This book had some really good twists and just raised the stakes even higher, there is a new character and of course the old crew and a lot is happening. So much action.

Also even though we get Calb's POV I have to admit I am still completely unsure of his agenda, his thoughts and feelings.

I love 1001, I love her complexity and her simplicity all rolled into one.

This book is made of awesome and I really do need the third one NOW.

Also, since I'm a romantic at heart (meaning I love romance though my sense of romantic gestures is quite crazy) I would love a hint on that (who? when?)

Please.

Everything is not going well for our captain Shepperd. He’s back in Asgard, and although he survived it and managed to escape it once, he knows this time there is no one coming to save him. He doesn't expect Fran coming and saving him and he definitely doesn't know her motives for breaking him out. Back in black, on a way to earn his paycheck, he meets with crazy pirate Adelina Cande, whom he once before seduced, robed and left for dead. Let’s just say she’s not very fond of him, and she has a job for him. He is to steel a fleet freighter for her or she will blow up his ship. Stealing a fighter seems easy ‘till you remember this is Caleb and there is always some sort of fuck up following him.

#1001 is in Chitec headquarters planning her escape with the aid of James, young technician working for Chitec. She thinks that she killed Caleb, and before disappearing into black and trying to figure herself out, there is one more thing she needs to do, visit Chen Hung and get some answers out of him.

These characters cannot be trusted. Once you think you figured them out, once you think you know what they are going to do, they will surprise you and leave you mind reeling. They lay, kill, and betray, and yet you will not be able not to root for them and search in them that something that you know is there.

This instalment brings more twists, more action and more questions. Writing is good as usual and the characters are morally ambiguous, interesting, complex and crazy as ever. Next instalment promises to be even better.

“You’re afraid of me, and you should be. Everyone should be afraid of me, of us— the one thousand. I think something terrible is already in motion. I feel it, the way I feel these whispered dreams. I know it, but I can’t say why.”

Wow! The Girl From Above: Escape is an explosive read. I enjoyed it even more than the first book. The second book takes us back to black and back into crazy word of space smugglers, space pirates and synthetic humans, where nobody can be trusted and everybody has secrets and hidden agendas. Caleb escapes Asgard with the help of Fran, his not to be trusted second in command, while #1001 who is at Chitech and is scheduled to be decommisioned, manages to escape with the help of a new character, Dr. James Lloyd, and a certain fleet commander. This leads to Caleb's and #1001's paths crossing again in a nail biting, edge of your seat showdown. The ending was perfect and made me hungry for the third book. I can't wait to see what's next in store for Caleb, #1001 and the co.

This takes place right after the first one and it moves just as fast and you won't want to put it down! I've said before that I'm not a sci fi fan, but Pippa has written something I can enjoy. You see 1001/Hailey still trying to figure out things and having feelings that aren't part of her programming. She finds someone that might be able to help if he can figure things out. Caleb, oh Caleb! He's what I call a hot mess. I've never read about a hero so conflicted, self serving and just unlikable but you like him! He's definitely an anti hero right now for me. I loved the ending, let's see where Pippa takes us next!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

As far as I can tell, this is a series about a Han Solo/ Captain Mal wannabe called Caleb (incidentally Nathan Fillion's Buffy character if I remember correctly) who has a magic penis which makes women do what he wants, and which works extra well when he himself is a big jerky dick. His dick is so magic he can even escape from an inescapable prison twice and there's no need to show how in the actual story because we know it must be caused by his penis magic!
The title character, #1001, is awesome though. I wish the story was just about her. Ironically, she is by far the most human and well-drawn character.
