A hilarious, highly-illustrated chapter book from debut author illustrator, Flora Ahn.
Two pugs. One beloved toy bunny. What could go wrong?
Sunny's new little sister, Rosy, is getting her paws into everything. When Rosy takes Sunny's favorite toy, Mr. Bunny, and loses him, Sunny is barking mad.
But when Rosy sets off on her own to find and rescue Mr. Bunny, Sunny starts to worry. Rosy's never been outside by herself before. Sunny will have to gather all the canine courage she has and go after them-before Rosy and Mr. Bunny are both lost fur-ever!
Flora Ahn is an attorney by day and an author and illustrator by night. Her work includes A Spoonful of Time (Quirk), The Golden Orchard (Audible Original), a children's chapter book series, Pug Pals (Scholastic), as well as her popular blog, Bah Humpug. Raised in California by her Korean immigrant parents, Ahn lives in Virginia with her three pugs and practices law in DC. She is always looking for opportunities to further pursue her love of food, books, drawing, and writing, and is especially excited to find ways to combine them.
Sunny lives the perfect pug life. When her human goes to work, she does, too. She has her yoga and Mr. Bunny to tend to. She needs nothing.
So, Sunny was far from pleased when her human came home with another pug. The human calls the spastic pup Rosy. Sunny has nothing to say to wiggly, happy, fuzz-ball following her around.
Until Rosy accidentally loses Mr. Bunny. And then Sunny loses Rosy!
In Sunny’s search for Rosy, she finds fault in her own behavior and vows to make some changes. If she can only find that perturbing puppy.
I absolutely adore this Juvenile Fiction chapter book, but you don’t have to take my word for it. I spoke to the first-grader currently reading it and she says “it’s great” and that Sunny’s yoga poses are “so funny”.
This review was written for Buried Under Books by jv poore, with a huge thank-you for the ARC which was donated to my favorite Elementary School Library.
Let me start by saying i adore this book!!! I purchased three copies and have been a long time follower of Flora and her adorable pugs. I have been a fan since way back when Sunny was the only pug, and then when Rosie came and now Monkey... I have always loved Flora's illustrations so when i heard that she was coming out with a book my heart was very happy! This book was amazing! I cant wait for the next book in the series!!! A def must read for ALL ages!!!!
Cute, but didn't hold my five-year-old's attention. Might be good to open up a conversation about sibling rivalry. Similar in plot and theme to Say Hello to Zorro!.
My reluctant reader son loved this book: cute, funny, with just enough mischief. It's a juvenile book with a plot and fun writing style, voice. My older daughter and even I enjoyed the book immensely. Looking forward to reading the sequel.
One of my students LOVES pugs so I had to pick this up for her, and I can’t decide what I liked best. The adorable illustrations? The darling dedication? Or the fact that this being #1 can only mean that there will be a #2?!?
Perfect for 2nd-3rd grade readers, especially those who love dogs!
One of the first pug accounts I followed on Instagram years ago! I've been following the adventures of the real life Sunny and Rosy and loved their doodled characters to pieces. I picked this book up for my niece and I know it'll be a favorite as she's inherited Aunt Andrea's love of pugs!
I loved this book. I follow the author on Instagram so know the two pugs from her posts. The ninja part had me laughing. Can’t wait for a new book hopefully with monkey too 😁
Adorable! Sunny and Rosy in print are sooo cute. After following the blog Bah Humpug, I couldn't wait to read the book, and Two's a Crowd captures their charming personalities to a T!
When I saw the name of the author's site, I knew I'd enjoy this book. BahHumPug.com? heh
Two's A Crowd is a heartwarming tale of Pug-jestic pooch, Sunny and her transition from single Pug life to one being upended by the addition of Rosey. When her human brings this new Pug home, Sunny's daily routine becomes chaos with Rosey around. She would have wished Rosey away, but Sunny is no labracadabrador. It's clear that Rosey is here to stay, sit and roll over. Whats a Pug to do? It was a ruff situation. To make matters worse, Sunny's favorite toy, Mr. Bunny, is lost thanks to Rosey's antics.
For kids with annoying siblings, this is definitely a book for them. It doesn't matter if it's a brother or sister, the irritation is often on the same level. Two's A Crowd follows Sunny as she is introduced to Rosey, has to deal with Rosey's "newness" and excitability due to her young age, and learn how to live with a new dog that isn't going anywhere. But how can you live with someone who chews on you all the time? Or drools? Or constantly wants to do little Pug things with you? What happens when that Pug runs away? Should you retriever? ;)
Puns aside, this is a cute book. As soon as I saw it, I knew that my daughter (8 years old) would love it. It has dogs doing doggie things and they're Pugs! We've had only big dogs, but my daughter (and son) have both expressed the wish to get a small dog like a Pug. Ugh, I say. If you have a young reader who loves animal stories but shuns the idea of chapter books, give this book a try! Two's A Crowd format reminds me a little of Diary of a Wimpy kid with the black and white illustrations breaking up the chapters to make it less daunting. Though it is a chapter book (10 chapters in all), it doesn't feel like it. They are short and easy to read, which is perfect for my daughter who prefers to read graphic novels. This will be a nice transition book for her. I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
I’m always on the look out for engaging early chapter books, like series books that are good for I merge them readers. This book fills the bill and should appeal to kids who love animals, especially dogs.
While it was it the most exciting book, I’m not the target audience. 😉 It is a cute story from the dogs point of view and tells about a single pug coming to terms with getting a new puppy sibling. Oh the horrors of having to share toys! Kids that have younger siblings or about to get one, might find some comfort with this book. It reminds me of one of my favorite picture books, Say Hello to Zorro by Carter Goodrich.
What I like about this book is that the writing is engaging, tells a story, has conflict that is resolved, provides connections for students, is also funny, and has cute pictures. And the font is Comic Sans or something like that. Before you groan, this is a great font for beginning readers because the Aa and Gs are written simply and more recognizably for beginning readers.
There is a book 2. I would recommend the book for librarians building their series sections to transition students from picture books and the really early chapter books like Mr. Putter and Tabby or Nate the Great.
{My thoughts} – This is a really fun chapter book about a couple of pugs named Sunny and Rosy. Sunny loves her routine and time alone while her human is away during the day. One day her human brings home Rosy and tells them they are sisters.
Sunny has a lot of adjusting to do when it comes down to getting use to having a new sister. Sunny has to learn that she needs to be nice, share and spend time with her new sister.
It takes awhile but eventually Sunny comes around. Eventually her and Rosy start to love one another like they were meant to.
I really liked this book. It’s a simple enough book for young children to read. The illustrations are really nice and compliment the story within the pages nicely. I think that this book would be perfect for any young child that is about to be having a new sibling come home. It’s not the same as human siblings but the jist of the lesson is the same. Children have the potential to learn a lot from reading this book. I look forward to reading the next one in the series very soon.
Wonderful little book that has it all: clever, original pug art; classic characterization of an older/younger sibling rivalry; and a whole lot of heart. Pug lovers, of course, will adore it, with its spot-on description of pug foibles and silliness, and it's a perfect early reader too, but its broader theme has a far wider appeal.
The simple cartoon illustrations are amusing and effective, using just a few lines to convey older pug sister Sunny's dismay at the intrusion of Rosy, a rambunctious new sibling; as well as Rosy's eagerness to be accepted and loved—even as she chews on her older sister's "drumstick." And the engaging plot of hunting down a lost toy packs a surprisingly moving message at the end, when the sisters learn to appreciate their own bond by sacrificing for someone else. Can't wait for the sequel!
Sunny is living the best pug life, but then her owner ruins everything by bringing Rosy home. Rosy never leaves Sunny alone, is annoying, and then she manages to lose Sunny's beloved stuffed bunny! Will home ever be a happy place again?
A typical disgruntled pet about a new house resident story (you can read it as a new sibling story or a new pet story). The book is highly illustrated but isn't quite in a graphic novel style (there are no frames or multiple boxes per page). I don't really care for pugs, but this was cute. The story has a bittersweet resolution in one sense (revolving around the bunny toy), but the two dogs come to a healthy appreciation of each other so it ends happily in that area. Hand this one to lower grade animal lovers.
Cute book about two pugs one older one named Sunny who has it made until Sunny's human brings home a surprise...... a baby sister pug Rosy. Rosy is wild and full of energy and just wants to be loved and play often where Sunny is set in a routine. Due to an unfortunate bunch of events Mr. Bunny, Sunny's favorite toy gets tossed outside and conveniently into someones car as they drive by. Sunny is so angry alot of "I wish you werent here & I hate you" was felt. Rosy feeling bad now goes on an adventure to track down the missing Bunny.
This book deals with siblings the love and hate, it deals with adventure, and a greater understanding of having someone to talk to and be there for you if you need. Cute great book my 8 & 11 year old both loved and understood.
I'm going to go ahead and give this 5 stars because as an adult, I loved this book. Ahn clearly is a dog lover, and her descriptions of her little dogs were spot on and hilarious. This made me want to cuddle with my dog all weekend and weirdly validated my long-standing thought that my dog smells like stale cereal in the best of ways. For a child, I would recommend this to a dog-lover as well as fans of illustrated stories. It's a good friendship story, but it might not resonate as well with children who aren't responsible for taking care of a small dog.
For more reviews, check out my blog: Craft-CycleA cute book about the difficulties of accepting a new member into the family including sharing toys, annoying questions, and constant interruptions, and learning to make adjustments. This is a nice, quick read, great for young readers. The chapters are short and there are pictures on nearly every page to break up the text. Fun illustrations that went well with the narrative. The story itself was simple, but adorable. Nice emphasis on new friends.
Things I liked: - Just about perfect font, chapter size, and balance of text and illustrations for a beginning chapter book - Pugs are cute and these drawn ones are even cuter than their real-life counterparts -Catchy title - Bildungsroman about a dog that actually manages to seem not too human and not too dog-like? That's pretty cool
Thing that wasn't so to my liking: - What this book models as appropriate problem solving
This is a really cute book about two pugs that go on an adventure. The pug named Sunny gets a new sister named Rosy, but she certainly isn't happy about it! When Sunny's favorite toys gets lost, Rosy sets out to make it right again. The illustrations in this books are tail wagging good! You can definitely tell that the author has pugs by the story and drawings in this book. Kids who love animals will definitely be drawn to this book!
This tale is perfect for reading aloud with your children. We split the reading over several days. The nature of the book allows for using funny voices to read the words of the characters. Each illustration of Sunny and Rosy help to tell the tale to your children.
I will be looking out for more books by this author.
Full of expressive cartoon like illustrations of Sunny the pug, and her rambunctious new pug sister Rosy, this book is a delight to read. Told with very little text and expressive pictures from Sunny's point of view, this tale of empathy and friendship is pure fun. The kids will love this fully illustrated chapter book and wait eagerly for the sequel.
This was a fun, easy read for me. I like that there are sweet moments in the story, and some funny parts. My favorite part is when Sunny was going to yell at her younger sister, only to find that she younger sister was already trying to fix her mistake. That was a really sweet moment.
Great beginning reader for kids who love graphic novels and need to transition to full text. Might make fun for a second grade reading guided reading group when it comes out in paper. Will need to take the time to check out the author's blog Bah Humpug. I love the language but that just may be the combination of attorney/author (think Doreen Cronin). Lots of fun.
Read for elementary school library/students. This is an early reader book with great illustrations about Sunny, the pug getting a new baby sister. Great to read for new baby coming into a home. Has a great story how Rosy (sister) and Sunny end up being friends. I think my second graders will enjoy this story.
