Uptight musical prodigy Phoebe Fitzgerald and chaotic class clown Megan Hunter meet as kids and a friendship is born that spans a three-decade long roller-coaster ride. But are they only meant to be friends? And if the passion underneath the platonic can’t be contained, will it destroy the relationship?
From humble beginnings to careers on the stage - Megan a comedian, Phoebe a rockstar - these two women will ask the question again and again… Is it ever a good idea to fall for your best friend?
A romantic comedy from the author of 'Real Love' and 'The Plus One'.
This is my 3rd book from the author and so far this is my favorite from her. I'm actually starting to warm up on how she tells her stories. This is a nice quick read. If you like plot with second chances you should check this out. The moment Megan wears a superwoman/super girl costume I was actually imagining this to be a Kara/Lena fan-fiction. :p The only thing that I don't like with this book is the ending. It's too sudden and rushed. An epilogue would be great.
A great short read that I really wish was longer. The story shows three stages of two best friends, Pheebe and Meg, relationship that starts at the age of 12. As much as I enjoyed the read, it ended when it was just beginning and left a ton of questions left unanswered. Maybe another book will follow...maybe. Regardless, it was well written story that will make you smile, make you shake your head, and make you chuckle.
Considering this story spans +/- 13 years I was pleasantly surprised by how well it flows. The author did a great job with the pacing. This was overall a pretty sweet coming of age story. The only thing that was a bit disappointing was that there really was not a lot of chemistry between the 2 main characters. Other than that this ends up with a 3.75* rating.
No 'waffle' with this book. Straight to story, which was a very good read . The story is very realistic and both characters are lovable. There was one problem with it tho, it leaves you wanting more. Needs to be a squeal.
oh Oh.... And its on kindle unlimited which is a bonus!! :D
As a whole, the story isn't bad, there are some twists and the writing style is good; just the right number of words and it was nice to read. Though I thought Megan was annoying, brash and unsophisticated - I don't enjoy reading sloppy personalities that much, but I did like Pheobe a lot more. The relationship building later on in the story happened a bit too quickly for my liking.
Megan and Phoebe meet in grade school. Megan is the low-income outcast wearing second-hand clothes and hating school. Her mom left when she was little and her dad has recently remarried a woman Megan hates. Phoebe is the high performing, driven student whose parents pressure her into a playing a variety of instruments, hoping she'll excel at one of them. The unlikely pair ends up becoming best friends, a relationship that extends through high school and into a summer away together working at a camp. That's where the friendship becomes more. But there's an angry parting when Megan makes a decision that tears the two apart.
Years later, now 35 year old adults, the two are successful performers who meet up again at a music and comedy festival.
This is a fun read with two interesting characters. It's not remarkable in terms of the writing, but I thought it was a pretty solid romance.
The book was fun to 50% then I had some issues First of al i don’t get while it is such a big deal that Megan is following this comedy group She didn’t know what to do with her life and then she found something of course she wouldn’t give it all up just to be in Manchester where she has no job whatsoever I’m mean sorry she didn’t give everything up for phoebe?? She had her place at a university.. It made me so angry at some points as if it wasn’t phoebes mistake too The whole time they acted as if only Megan made the mistake And it’s the second Book of the author I read and it’s the Second Time where somebody is pregnant and only the love interest has a car Also I don’t really like it when there is such a long time where the characters don’t speak to each other I mean 17 years... and they didn’t speak a word to each other It seems too much to just fix all the time they lost

It's 2:58am and I've just finished reading, found it difficult to put down from the get go. Waiting For The Punchline is a beautifully written book that introduces us to two main characters, Megan and Phoebe. Natasha West takes us through the ups and downs, as both Megan and Phoebe transition through puberty, childhood, and adulthood. We get to witness the blossoming friendship between the two, right up until they've reconnected again as adults.
I'm a little bias as I've read everything i could from this author, and have not been dissapointed yet. If you haven't already, i urge you to read this book asap (or my personal favorites: something for the weekend, the plus one and Hawke's flight).
I cringed at the beginning since the author started when they were 12 year old girls. The talk of periods and terrible teachers was a wonderful reminder of things I do not miss.
The only thing that sort of bothered me was all the time spent in the past. Their adulthood together felt all too short, and I really loved how they met again. I laughed and cheered for the "new" Phoebe. I really wish there was more though in the whole process of rekindling. Their current lives only came into play about 62% through the book, and not much happened from there since it felt like it was over far too quickly.
Honestly, it was great. Perhaps I'm being greedy, but I wanted more about their current relationship.
I enjoyed the story of Megan and Phoebe, it's amazing how you get to know them, how they grew and success in their careers. The story is funny and refreshing, is not spicy but it doesn't need it. It's a journey of childhood fears, teenage dreams and achievements, because a friendship and a love ike this is unforgettable and meant to last forever. I definitely recommend it.....
I like Natasha West's books. Good stories and characters, not too long or too short my only problem is that once started I have job to put them down. Lost a lot of sleep.
I love it till they were 18. The seventeen year gap put me off immensely and made the characters feel impersonal to me. Wouldn't mind trying something else from the author though. x
Young love. Good read about two really nice teenagers, from very different backgrounds, who are best friends and then lovers. Heartbreak follows, but can their hearts be mended? Recommended.
A lovely quick read by Natasha West. I have read other books by this author. Her characters are interesting and engaging. Her stories are so good I can't put the book down. I will always recommend this author.
