Zant Michael Taylor grew up next to Micah Faith Carson. He loved her even before he knew what love really was. His family genes broke her - and him. He left her to protect her from his demons. Now he's back. Can love really heal scars? Zant wanted to save Micah. In the end, can they save each other?
This book started off really well. Zant and Micah meet when they are 5 years old, Zant moves next door to Micah and they become best friends. Both of them feel more than friendship as time goes on. Neither of them is willing to admit it because they are afraid of ruining their friendship. They live in a small town and have a close circle of friends. Micah's parents are loving and wonderful. Zant's Mom died when he was about 7 and his father has become an abusive drunk who beats Zant on a regular basis.
Zant stays at Micah's house often because her parents know about the abuse. One night, Micah goes home and realizes his father is not passed out drunk, he's not at home. He starts to go back to Micah's house and hears a scream. He realizes it's Micah and when he gets to her, what he sees changes everything.
That's where things start to go downhill for me. I don't get the reaction of Zant, the adults in the story and everyone in general. If Micah's parents knew of the abuse, in such a small town, wouldn't teachers and other adults know of it? Zant leaves right after graduation without any explanation and the only one that knows is Micah's Dad, who encourages it. Then he comes back years later, again with no explanation.
The end was somewhat of an ending, but I felt like there was a bunch of buildup and then....nothing. 2 1/2 stars.
Not enough words to how much I loved Micah and Zant's story I fell in love with them from the very beginning. The storyline and the writing were amazing I cannot wait to read more from Kristy!!!!
