When Ignatius Low quit his civil service job and joined The Straits Times as a business reporter in 1999, never in his wildest dreams would he have thought that he would end up writing fortnightly personal columns in the Sunday newspaper on music, love, life and his many trivial obsessions. This book is a collection of his best columns from over more than a decade and is the story of a Singapore boy who grew up in the '80s. Or maybe it is the story of the boy or girl in all of us that never quite grew up, always looking back in wonder at what we have gained and lost in our garden city.
I've always liked his writing and this selection of his columns didn't disappoint. I can relate to most, if not all, of them, and there is a handful which really made me stop and think about where life is (not) taking me. This is a book which is meant to be slowly savoured and not rushed through at one go.
Ignatius Low reveals the humourous side of him in this book about his life from student days to year 2016. Ignatius is a true Singapore boy whom one can identify with growing up in the 1980s. His witty and funny pieces brought back memories for me of years gone by. “Life is a mixtape” covers a wide range that touches on Life, Music, Obsessions, Fashion, Memories, School, Opinions, Work and Travel. The writer has good memories of past events and I felt that I had been through it before. It was laugh aplenty as I read each personal story. Life can have lighter moments and I recommend anyone to pick up his book and read it.
If you grew up between 1970s to 1990s, this book would bring you down memory lane, very nostalgic and I resonated with the author's perspective. I enjoyed every page of this book. Highly recommended.
