Wolves

Elmhurst isn’t like other towns. Hidden in a remote valley where the nights are ruled by shadow and fog, monstrous wolves prowl the streets from sunset to sunrise. The townsfolk lock themselves inside behind the safety of their steel shutters while the pack ravages their town, slaughtering anybody foolish enough to stray outside after dark.

It’s against this backdrop that Ansel, a high school dropout with a complicated family, struggles to hold onto Thomas, the boy he loves, who lives with a vendetta against the wolves that rule Elmhurst by night. Also trying to cope are Anda, whose twin sister has vanished without a trace, and Venus, a newcomer unable to accept her surreal surroundings. As the moon rises over the valley and the pack stirs, seven townsfolk each embark on their own journeys through the dark. But when paths cross, the consequences could be devastating…

Wolves is a new adult urban fantasy novella with hints of horror, surrealism, and romance.

Kai Bishop was born and raised in New Brunswick, Canada, where he became fascinated with fantasy and sci-fi from a young age. He writes and publishes under the names Apollo Blake and Cosmo Knox. A massive lover of books, film, video game, and comics, he decided to become a writer when he was twelve years old, and never looked back. His favorite genres are urban fantasy and paranormal romance, he loves both outlining and discovery writing and switches between them from project to project, always listens to music when writing, and his favorite part of the writing process is drafting. He loves animals, sketching, gaming, cooking, and journaling, and spends most of his spare time reading, making music, and looking after his cats and dogs. He is sometimes sane, but mostly not, and almost always overthinking, which actually helps with the writing a lot.

Thomas changed things. He broke the pattern. The problem was, sometimes he got too good at breaking things.

Some day he was going to go too far, and break himself.

I really admire the way Blake can write about small towns. They spring off the page with all these facets and characters, fleshed out and visual even with the barest details. Except... they're not any small towns a sane person would ever want to live in. Because weird things happen in them and people go missing or die.

The writing is brief but descriptive, and none of these weird things are explained. The town accepts the weirdness, but there are those who want to change it or rebel against it. I think it works better that way, because in this case, any attempt at an explanation would only ruin the magic.

He'd spent his entire life here, and he'd only been outside past sunset in his dreams.

A gruesome and atmospheric horror short story about several teenagers living in a town haunted by wolves and shadows at night.
I enjoyed it, but I would have enjoyed it more if at least some things had been resolved. As it is, it's more a story about the feeling of this horror/mystery town, the people who live there, and how they deal with it, since there is no real plot.

Short story

Enjoyed. Wish it was longer, however I feel it could use more work. I couldn't put it down until the end
