Until a year ago, Lola Walker always felt comfortable in life—she was unlucky in love, but solid as part of Holt Lasher’s team. But the past year has made her swear off women and shaken her faith in her ability to do her job. Getting cheated on, dumped, and almost getting your team killed will do that. But then a new threat is leveled against Holt and her family by a group of anonymous cyber criminals attempting to steal millions from unsuspecting online fantasy sports players. Lola goes undercover in L.A. to find them, intent on regaining her footing. And if she just happens to spend some time with the intriguing Dr. Quinn Golden? Well, it would be rude not to, even if she might be involved in the scheme. But when Quinn’s life is in jeopardy will Lola have to watch helplessly as someone she loves gets ripped away from her once again?
Jesse Thoma splits her professional time between graduate school and work. She is a project manager in a clinical research lab and spends a good amount of time in methadone clinics and prisons collecting data and talking to people. Jesse grew up in Northern California but headed east for college. She never looked back, although her baseball allegiance is still loyally with the San Francisco Giants. She has lived in New England for ten years and has finally learned to leave extra time in the morning to scrape snow off the car. Jesse is blissfully married and is happiest when she is out for a walk with her wife and their dog, pretending she still has the soccer skills she had as an eighteen-year-old, eating anything her wife bakes, or sitting at the computer to write a few lines. 3.5 Stars. This is the third book in Thoma’s series about Holt Lasher and her crew. I found I like this slightly better than book two, but the first book is still my favorite. I do want to point out I highly recommend reading these books in order. The main group of characters is in all three books and you connect to them over the series. I just don’t think this book would work as well as a standalone.
Holt is basically a real life superhero who owns a bounty hunter business. She is the boss, but has a very competent crew working for her. One of her best workers, mostly know as being part of the “muscle” of the crew, is Lola. When Holt’s family is threatened, it’s up to Lola to find out what is going on. What Lola doesn’t expect is to be attracted to a woman who might just be a suspect.
These books are just pure action books. Of course each of them has a romance theme, but what you get with these books is an action packed ride. Not to be insulting but these are not the best written books, but they are always exciting and fun. And what I also enjoy, Holt does not like guns, so this isn’t just a shoot-um-up kind of book. It adds some imagination since things can’t easily be solved by guns.
What I liked better about this book, than the previous one, was the romance. Considering this is an action book, there was more time for the romance than you would expect. I really liked Lola and Quinn and enjoyed how they got closer and closer together.
The way this book ended it might be the last in the series. If so, this definitely was an enjoyable series. If you are looking for a fun action packed ride, with some romance, give these books a shot. If you are new to the series, definitely start with book 1, The Chase.
An ARC was given to me by BSB, for a honest review.
This is the fourth book by Thoma, and the third in a series that includes The Chase, and Pedal to the Metal. It is an action book featuring a team of skilled operatives who become embroiled in the dangerous investigation of a street gang in LA. The team is lead by the Amazonian Holt, and her girlfriend Isabelle. Their main attack dog is Lola, a tall and strong fighter with a basic education and a degree in loyalty and street smarts.
Lola, desperate to prove herself again after a stuffup which resulted in another team member being shot, volunteers to go undercover to investigate the threats against the team. While working on campus in her new role as caretaker, she comes across the dazzling Quinn, a research neuroscientist.
Dr Quinn Golden is working madly to write grants, teach and continue her research when she stumbles across the stunning Lola. The heat between them is palpable, despite them coming from very different worlds.
When it all blows up, will Lola and the team be able to keep Quinn safe?
Thoma has created an interesting team with diverse skills. Giving the leader Holt extreme wealth, the author gives herself freedom to have a largish group and the wherewithal to travel or do what they need to get the bad guys. Thoma has given the members of the group enough differentiation to be interesting in their own right, which is appropriate for the series.
I haven’t read the first two books in the series, and this wasn’t a problem once I got into the book. However, the start was very confusing and I can see why another reviewer didn’t get very far into it. The first scene is an action sequence, which is normally a good way to start an action book. However, it was impossible to tell who all the characters were when we only had their voices during the chase sequence. It would have been much easier for a new reader to meet less of the team during the initial chase, and to meet most of the team back at headquarters later on.
Once I got to know the team a bit better, it was easier to differentiate the separate characters, their personalities and their roles within the team. I think this was an issue of coming into the series as a new reader, rather than already knowing the team from previous books.
Lola was smart and capable, and engagingly interested in learning new things. Quinn was a dedicated researcher, who seemed to come out of her shell as she spent more time with Lola. Their budding relationship was forged during a dangerous time, but Thoma created enough heat for it to have a flavour of its own within the chaos.
I liked the action as written by Thoma. However, it did seem odd that the team call themselves bounty hunters when they spent so much of the book not doing any of that, nor even referring to it at all. It would have felt more real to have some staff still working on that in the background while others were focused on the major operation covered in the main plotline.
I can see this being a popular book with fans of lesbian action writing, although I would recommend you read the previous books first.
This is an enjoyable action romp with a lesbian twist.

This book is the third in the series of Holt Securities. I recommend to read the books in order (The Chase / Pedal to Metal / Data Capture). The main characters are in all three books and they share a lot of experiences.
This one is relatively slow in the beginning for an action book, but gains on tempo and action a lot over the time. So when Holt received some threats on her chosen family, she can’t accept it and gets really angry. She sends Lola, her best friend since they were teenagers, to work undercover in L.A.
There on her first night in L.A. she meets the beautiful and intriguing Quinn. Only to learn the next day that she’s a suspect. Can she trust Dr. Quinn Golden or is she one of the cyber criminals she’s looking for? And there is her lousy track record with women. She doesn't even know if she's able to have a real relationship? And will she trust enough to give her heart again?
The romance part is very sweet and it's beautiful to see how Quinn and Lola are getting closer. The sparks are flying, but before they can act on their feelings, everything goes south and they have to run for their life. Are Holt and her team able to be there in time to rescue the two women? And if so is there even a possibility for Quinn and Lola for a relationship in this huge chaos?
Over all I liked this book very much, especially the romance between Lola and Quinn and the witty comments from Dubs. The action is fast paced but sometimes I struggled to follow the crime story. But if you like a series with some super women I highly recommend the series. I would like to read more about this group of women, but maybe the series is over.
The case for Holt&Co this time around was interesting but I was more invested in the personal developments for the characters. I hope there's going to be more to this series and this crew.
Lola is having a bad time of it due to things going wrong on her teams last job. She feels out of sync with the team and thinks she has something to prove.
I kind of felt lost and only had vague memories of what went on before. The earlier parts of the team figuring out the threat dragged a bit but things soon heated up and became interesting. The action definitely didn't disappoint.
I enjoyed the chemistry between Lola and Quinn. It was fun seeing them get to know one another and how they handled the danger around them through it all.
Overall a good book full of action.
I received this book from Bold strokes books via netgalley for an honest review.
While on a secret assignment, Lola finds herself falling for the fascinating Dr. Quinn Golden. But after Lola puts Quinn's life in danger, they both have to leave the city. The need to keep themselves alive is their only goal now. Will their romance survive the danger that plagues their lives?
I didn't realize that this was the 3rd book in a series, and some of the book is told from the POV of other characters introduced in the previous books. I didn't have any trouble following the story, but I think I didn't form the same emotional connection with all the characters because the focus was on so many characters at once, not just the main characters.
I really really liked the beginning, and the way Lola and Quinn got to know each other, it was really sweet and well done. It was a slow burn courtship and I loved it. I also loved both Lola and Quinn. I loved how strong our leading ladies were. Quinn didn't need rescuing, she was accomplished and brilliant in her own right, but Lola could also be there for her. Lola was very strong and badass but she was also sensitive and caring. They were very genuine characters and a really nice pairing. I loved Quinn's secretary too- she was hilarious and a brilliant sidekick.
But in the second half of the book, I struggled. I would probably give the first half of the book four stars and the second half of the book 3 stars. I didn't really like the action scenes in the book, I felt they were a little lacking. There were so many characters involved and I felt like the focus was on so many characters at once, that I found it not as engaging as it could have been. I was also super confused during the walkie talkie, or earpiece, conversations because I was never sure who was actually talking.
I received an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
So this is the third book in an on going series. Yes, I would advise you to read the first two. Also, saying that you'll love book one. In my opinion of course.
This is an action based book. Quite fast paced and as I said earlier you'll understand and enjoy it more if you read the previous two. It's about a team of bounty hunters becoming embroiled in a street gang in LA. It's a fast paced book with intriguing characters and some romance between some diverse characters.
If you love action and fast paced books grab this one. It keeps you entertained throughout.
Enjoy!

3rd book in a series. I had not read this series until I saw this book coming out. So, I went back to read the others, which I highly recommend. There must be a suspension of belief to truly enjoy the books. Sometimes I can do that...sometimes I have trouble. Luckily for me-I thoroughly enjoyed all of the installments to date. It's a quirky cast of characters. All of them bordering on superhero status for certain reasons. I actually enjoyed the romance in this one much more than the others. It was more of a slow burn and was very sweet. The book is, like the others, fast paced and easy to read.
I received and ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a really fun read. Lola and Quinn are such likable characters. So this is the second in Jesse Thoma's series with Holt and her crew. We get to see a lot more about some of her crew and that was very enjoyable. Like I said Lola and Quinn were very likable and Quinn fit into the functional/disfunctional work/family very well. A lot of action and even an awesome car chase are included. I do enjoy these sort of stories and I hope this isn't the last we'll see of this group. I'd suggest this sequel to anyone. If you haven't read the first story, then go back and definitely read that as there are a lot of mentions to what happened in the first book in the second book and you wouldn't want to be spoiled.
Really good series, Love it, but please be the last: plots becoming more and more outrageous and close to WTF? Love the love story and the slow build. Highly recommended.
3.7 STARS is my actual preferred rating! Closer to 4 but not quite 4 solid stars.
Data capture is part of a book series, it's #3 in the Holt Lasher and crew series. Essentially it focuses on drop dead gorgeous, intelligent and funny bounty hunter Lola Walker, one of Holt's inner circle friends and team member. And Quinn Golden, a professor of neurological science. Lola travels across the country to LA for an undercover mission, and while there she meets the stunning, intelligent and introverted Dr Quinn Golden. Their attraction to each other is immediate and strong, setting in motion a beautiful slow burn yet action packed romance!
I should probably point out that, like the psychotic lunatic I can be (all jest lol), I read this book before reading the other two! I have no regrets though. I was able to put the pieces together and honestly, I do think this book can be read as a standalone... IT'S AN OPINION.
I didn't give a higher rating than what I gave because I felt the plot could and should have focused more on Lola and Quinn. I'm not sure if it was intentional on the author's part, but I think Holt and Isabelle ate into the plot too much. I understand Holt is the leader, and quite literally the main character in the series, but if this book was meant to focus on Lola, I think Holt should have taken a more side character role. Aside from that, I loved the book.
The characters, mainly Lola and Quinn, were wonderful. I really loved them and I look forward to visiting them sometime again! I still wish they had a larger spotlight than they got but they weren't completely sidetracked.
Overall I think it was a good book. Lots of action but still as sweet as any romantic novel out there. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a tough action but sweet slow burn lesbian romance novel!
I love the world that Ms Thoma has created around Holt Lasher and her crew. I feel like I'm sitting on the edge of their warehouse wishing I could join in. This is the third book featuring Holt and her crew and focusses on Lola Walker and her developing relationship with an intriguing neuroscientist Dr Quinn Golden. In this episode, someone is threatening Holt's direct family and the one thing that is guaranteed to rile Holt is any hint of danger to her partner, Isabelle, and their child. This is a fast paced, thrilling, heart thumping book which drags you through some complex and clever plotting. It is well written and I find the characters and their interactions endearing and credible.
Recommended if you enjoy roller coaster, complex crime stories.
I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley in return for an honest review.
This is my first time reading a Jesse J Thoma book, but since reading Data Capture it won't be my last. Lola and Quinn are great characters and the building up of attraction between the two is lovely and very fitting. The story is a fantastic mixture of romance with an added bonus of thriller, the tension kept me guessing, this is a book that i just couldn't put down. Excellent Its the third in a series but you really don't need to have read the first two before this one..... but from this I am fascinated by the Holt and Isabelle story so will be buying 'Chase' Would I recommend to others, yes 100%
Data Capture has the unique blend of action, danger, mystery…academia and cyber-crime. Throw in an attraction between women of diverse backgrounds and you have a great story to escape into for several hours. Thoma creates strong characters with intriguing personalities, flaws and all, and will draw you into the drama of their lives with imaginative wit and dialogue. Data Capture will hold you hostage from the first page to the last and you will be happy for the experience. This is not a book to skip over. Get a copy and enjoy the adventure.
An honest review thanks to NetGalley. I love Holt and her team; it was nice finally being able to learn more about Lola. I loved Quinn and what made this book really special is we get to see and watch the characters from the previous books as well. It keeps the reader interested as the story progresses over Holt and Isabella, Max and Dubs, and the rest of the "avenger" team. I will recommend you read the first two books in the series before starting this one, but you won't be disappointed.
I’m a huge Holt Lasher fan and the latest edition doesn’t disappoint. This book has everything you want in an action thrilled adventure. A sassy team, villains, car chases, political shenanigans and a romance - perfection in a fantastically written tale. Jesse J Thoma is rapidly becoming one of my favourite authors.
This was an interesting story with a great premise. It would have been better had I read the first book with these characters, and I plan on doing just that. They were flawed and have weaknesses, which I love because I can identify more readily with "real" characters. Perfection is rare.
