The Enigma #4

Sanctuary

As civilization crumbles, will there be anybody left to fight back?

Drew musters the courage to fly back to the scene of his near-destruction. While there, he has an intense encounter that not only reveals the aliens' intent, but leaves him changed forever. He must now mount a covert mission into Valta, a city in what used to be Australia. He must gather as much intelligence as possible, to enable Earth's possible fight back. But will be make it back out of the well-defended city-state?

Storm goes to the bottom of the ocean, in a submarine as fast as a torpedo. He attempts to find proof that aliens have built a mighty economic empire in preparation for the interstellar ship's arrival. But does the proof exist?

And twelve-year-old Anna, Storm's daughter, runs from a crumbling and terrified city, with her rapidly-disintegrating mother and her violent lover. She ends up alone, with nowhere to turn, fearing for her mother's life, in a different city, as it cowers before the incoming invaders. Will Anna find help, or will she be swept away in the rising tide of panic and chaos?

"Whether it is good or bad ... It won't be boring."
Sanctuary is not a stand alone book, but part four of an exciting serial, charting the arrival of an unknown alien craft and attempts to both determine what it is and it's intentions as it heads towards earth. Two brothers, Storm and Drew, appear to have a sensitivity to living matter associated with the Enigma and, after an unsuccessful attempt to destroy the vessel with a nuclear device, Drew tries to make direct contact with it. Meanwhile, Storm is sent on a different mission under water as earth's citizens, his own family included, become increasingly panicked by the two day proximity of the rapidly approaching craft.
Well written in classic science fiction style and with good characterisations, excitement and immagination, this episode is quick and easy to read, suffering only by being far too short, hence only four stars. Fortunately, however, book five will soon be available. My thanks to the author, from whom I received a prepublication copy of Sanctuary without any expectations from myself.
