Touched by Death

Rate this book
(*This is a standalone new adult paranormal romance.)

What if Death was more tempting than you had ever imagined?

With Grams's recent passing and a boyfriend who cares more about his next drink than her, Lou Adaire only wants to run. To start over somewhere new — maybe in a town where her family has history.

But when a storm sends Lou’s truck plunging into Tuttle Creek Lake, she discovers exactly what it’s like to fight for your life. To gasp for air only to have your lungs fill with icy water. To die.

What comes next changes everything.

Dark eyes. Consuming presence.

Death. As vague as a dream yet as intense as the lightning flashing above her still heart.
Everything about him calls out to her, tugging at her with the warm vibration of his pull. He’s supposed to take her; they both know it. She wants him to.

When she wakes in the hospital in a new town, she can’t forget what she saw. That impossible sensation of him breathing life back into her, a strong beat playing in her chest and a flutter running down her spine.

Trying to move on with her life in a foreign place is hard enough, but when he comes back for more — his burning touch against her skin, his consuming presence weaving in and out of her life, and his own scars running far deeper than hers — Lou begins to realize there’s more to Death, and to the sleepy Kansas town, than she ever expected to find.

Lou lived. But what if she’s not the only one in need of saving?

I enjoyed this story. However, I can't give it a higher rating because, in the end, I felt like I wanted more, or like I expected more after so much build up. More details, more explanation of the unknown, more development into the paranormal aspect. Enzo as Death has not being fully explained and it feels superficial as it stands. I still have many answers, and although the main part of the story has been removed, there is still a lot that feels unfinished, untold.
I am not satisfied.

ARC kindly provided by author in exchange for an honest review.

Tallulah "Lou" Adaire was raised by her grandmother after her parents passed away. With her grandmother recently passing, Lou comes to the realization that she needs and wants a new start. Packing up everything she owns, she decides to drive across country from California to a small town in Kansas called Ashwick. All she knows about this town is that it is where her grandmother was born and raised, so it sounds like a nice place for a new start. A way to stay connected to her grandmother. When a storm hits, Lou looses control and her car ends up going off the side of a bridge, plunging into a lake below.

After surviving a brush with death, Lou finally makes it go Ashwick and gets settled at the local Inn. Soon after her accident she begins having dreams and strange visits. Her dreams are troublesome because they are of two young boys who are being abused by their father. Her visits are strange in that she feels a presence, but she can't see it. At least not at first. After a few encounters with it, the presence begins to take form into the shape of a man.

"Who. . .what are you?"
"I think you know."
"Are you an. . . angel?"
"I’m no angel.”
I can’t say where it comes from, but somehow, I know. I know what he is.
"Death." The word floats out of my mouth like a puff of air.

Lou likes when he visits and begins to look forward to them. There is a strong pull between Death and Lou. Each time they meet the heat is turned up between these two. The chemistry is intense. And soon love forms, but how do you fall in love with Death and expect a happy ever after. He doesn't even live on the same plane as Lou. And just being near him causes her harm. Lou is such a strong character. She's not going to let something or someone like Death stop her from getting what she wants. But will she be able to make the ultimate sacrifice when the time comes?

This book had me enthralled from the beginning. The plot was new, refreshing and something I’ve never read before. I couldn't wait to dive in. I loved how strong both the hero and heroine were. There were several twists added to the story that added a mysterious element and had me dying to find out what was going on. T.L. Martin is a new author to me, but her writing was fabulous. I look forward to reading more by her. I can't wait to see what else she comes up with. I highly recommend this book to all of you paranormal lovers out there!

Absolutely 5 stars.

I was introduced to this story by the author. It's PNR and definitely my kind of book. I had originally planned not to read it yet as I had other commitments, but the blurb really intrigued me and so I picked it up and started reading. Boy am I glad I did.

What a story! It's filled with tension, suspense, wit, sweetness and chemistry. It's the kind of story you hope could be real. I know it's PNR but the feelings it stirs in you are very real. It made me want to laugh, cry and swoon all in equal measure.

It's hard to describe without giving away spoilers and I really don't want to do that because you have to read the story to appreciate it, because it really does give you those 'first read feels.'

I loved Lou's character, she's lost a lot in her life but she's made it through, she's stronger than she believes and resilient. She has this really spunky and witty vibe to her. It's awesome to read because you can't help gel to her.
'Death' was such a fascinating character and the whole vibe he gave off was intense. Like he had this eerie quality and if you read the story you'll realise why. At the beginning he's this enigma, he has to collect souls on the brink of death, a lonely and sad vocation but if the story is to be believed, necessary. He was complex but essentially still a man. Sort of. Not to mention hot!!
The two characters together had so much chemistry and it's a testament to an author who can make you feel them, live through them. That's how I felt whilst reading them. I felt I was in the story and I love it when I'm a willing participant and not just an observer.

How these two characters are brought together and the eventual ending will leave you reeling. I certainly wasn't expecting it and I really racked my brain. This book DESERVES so much attention. I sometimes wish I had book amnesia, so that I can relive the story all over again. It's definitely going to be a reread book.

Cannot wait for more by this author, definitely one to watch.

Wow! I can’t believe this book has been out in the world and I never even suspected it held such an amazing story!

I absolutely loved Lou and her fierce determination just to survive. She’s had so much loss in her life and yet she continues to move forward, a little slower, a little wounded, but desperate to find a place to heal. Instead, she finds something she never expected and opened up a whole new pathway of life.

I can’t express how much I adored the fact that this book was able to not only wreck my heart, but that it could throw me into a storm of conflicting emotions that I experienced pretty much all at the same time. That’s something not many books can do and yet this author made it appear so easy. This is loaded with all types of angst from several avenues.

While this is a paranormal read, at the heart is a romance and holy heck! This couple! I am in awe at how giving each of them are. I’m sure I’ve never read another story where the hero or heroine was as selfless as these characters were.

Simply put, this was a beautifully written story of love, heartache, salvation and sacrifice. This is one of those reads that will leave you with a book hangover even as it stays in your mind long after the last page is turned.

I was excited to read this one because it’s been awhile since I’ve dived into a paranormal romance and I was absolutely not disappointed. I loved this book. It was really the whole package for me. The cover is so pretty and I while I very much enjoyed the writing style, it was the flawless delivery of the story that made it so enchanting.

Lou Adaire has already lost both of her parents, so when her Grandmother passes she decides to make a change and get away for a while. Her Grams was very secretive about her past and Lou has a curious nature so she decides to go back to Ashwick, the town her Grandmother lived before she was born. On the way, a storm causes her to get into a crash that results in her car going off a bridge and falling into the lake. As she falls deeper into the water, getting back to the surface becomes impossible. When things go black and she sees a figure in the water, she isn’t sure what it is… What he is.

The edges of his large frame are blurred, almost convincing enough to be a dream. Still, I know the truth.

                 I’m dying . . . if I’m not already dead.

I can feel my life wasting away with each second, disconnecting me from my frozen heart. Something’s tugging at me, calling my name. A magnetic force trying to yank me away from my body.

The closer he gets, the stronger the pull.

This was the part when I really started to fall in love with the book. I absolutely adored the way the author described that entire experience.
After getting out of the hospital, Lou finds a gorgeous Inn to stay at while in town. She makes quick friends with Claire, the perkiest desk clerk you’ve ever seen. (I really liked her character). As Lou gets settled into her new place at the Inn, she begins feel something, or rather, someone in the room with her, and while she should be scared, instead she is comforted.

It’s so quiet, I can hear my own inhales and exhales. Each breath a soft pull and whoosh, a smooth and steady stream of air. Until it’s not, and I hear a different rhythm. It’s quieter, but there’s a roughness to it. It’s deep and controlled, and it doesn’t match the rise and fall of my chest. In fact, it doesn’t seem like me at all.

               My eyes snap open.

Steam clouds the small bathroom, but I can see there’s no one here but me. Still, I feel it. I feel a presence, a warmth on my skin, and I hear it in the air like a painter’s brush stroking its canvas.

The encounters between her and him become more intense as the book and each one is so wonderful. The hero character who is essentially death, was beyond perfect and I loved him so much. The way he is introduced and then brought into the story was fantastic.
When Lou gets a job as the caretaker for a rich shut in, she begins to realize he might be able to give her answers about her Grams. What she ends up learning is much worse than she could have fathomed. As she gets closer to Death and her feelings deepen, they both begin to change in terrifying ways and they are both determined to protect each other.

“Your world,” I say quickly, remembering what happened with my hand. “I think I felt it—”

“Where I come from,” he growls, the strong reaction taking me by surprise, “is not someplace you will ever know. Do you understand?”

I swallow the lump in my throat. He looks impossibly threatening for someone lounging in a loveseat. “You’re learning everything about me and my world firsthand. It only makes sense I’d want to know a little bit about yours. About the person who’s stuck inside my room with me. I should get to know something about you, shouldn’t I? What it’s like being you?”

At that, he turns his gaze to the window, letting the silence build. When he responds, it’s quiet. Low. Dangerous. “You shouldn’t ask questions you don’t really want the answer to.”

There is so much I want to say about this book, but I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. I really didn’t even scratch the surface of what happens. Not only is the love story incredible, but the way the little tidbits of information slowly came together made it so fun to read. There is some dark stuff in here which of course I love, as well as a couple of steamy scenes. The characters, plot, writing style, cover, and delivery were all spot on for me. I know of one other book by this author which I will definitely be checking out.

And I know I will follow him anywhere.

This is my second book by T.L. Martin (I previously read Liar, Liar), and she has made a fan out of me! I was immediately hooked by the premise of this novel, and the delivery does not disappoint.
This novel is told solely from Lou’s point of view, and we get to know the mysterious man who calls himself Death just as she does. The novel is very slow paced, but it’s jam-packed with intense emotions and an atmospheric setting. This novel is more character-driven than my usual romances, and I grew to know and love all the characters, from her new friend Claire to the grumpy old Mr. Blackwood. There were a few twists in the plot, and while they were predictable, I didn’t mind at all, because the writing style sucked me in and I loved every minute of it.
The book has somewhat of a melancholy feel to it. It’s definitely not a light read, despite not being truly a “dark” romance.
I highly recommend this book for those who want to read a somewhat angsty new-adult, paranormal romance with star-crossed lovers.

My God . . . This is one of the best books I've ever read.

Now . . . for this review, I'm going to try like hell not to say "blew my mind" more than once, but I make no promises.

Let's talk about the author: She has such an orchestrated way of writing, it sucks you right in. Picture a master violinist, playing the most beautiful masterpiece, and you can't help but close your eyes and let it sink to your bones. You selfishly soak it in, each stroke against the string, each vibration to your ears, each raised goosebumps on your skin. From the very first page, I was this book's willing slave.

Let's talk about the book: Lou, the main character, I found myself relating to on such a level that I felt as if I knew her personally. None of the events that happened in her life, have ever happened in mine, but yet, I still felt as though I understood, that I went through all of it with her. She was witty, caring, selfless, and several times I found myself laughing out loud.
Death, I never thought my book boyfriend would be Death. Never in a million years. Yet, I had such a crush on him throughout this entire book. I sighed dreamily on several occasions. He was sexy, confident, hard yet romantic, masculine . . . the most subtle movements he made had me fawning over him and fanning my face. That's never happened to me before. Seriously.
The story-line . . . was insane. It blew my mind (there it is, folks). The book is a long one, but not once did I find myself bored or wanting to walk away for a break. Like I said, I was it's slave. There was a point while reading, where I glanced at the clock, realized my bedtime had come and gone, and I shrugged, sticking my nose right back in the words flowing so eloquently across the pages. Sleep is for the dead, people.
Every detail you pick up, every insignificant (or what you think is insignificant) detail pointed out, comes back ten-fold, fitting together like the most beautiful puzzle piece, bringing together the entire story and you're left in awe. When I reached that section, my jaw hit the floor. And from then on out, I bit my nails, waiting to see what happened next.

I was given this book for free in exchange for a review. I do not have any ties to T.L. Martin, but damn it, am I glad I ran across her when she was searching. I plan to buy the paperback . . . that should tell you something, eh?

One more thing: This book blew my mind.

Over and out.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review

What if Death was more tempting than you had ever imagined ?

WOW O_O ! Who knew Death could be so sweet and charming ...

I read a lot of books recently and I can honestly say it's been a while since I've been so completely enthralled by a story, only rarely looking up from the screen.

Lou Adaire lost everyone and when Death comes for her she could just let go. But she fought, never giving up. And I felt for her while she did, I laughed with her and I cried with her. And I really love it when an author can make me feel like that.

And Death... Death was so selfless and cared so deeply for Lou that I admit I was a little envious.

The side characters, the dreams, the mystery, EVERYTHING has a purpose (I may have Q&A myself aloud ^^) and I couldn't help but feel both impatient and sad the closer I got to the end. I didn't want to finish and I couldn't wait to.

So thank you T.L. Martin for letting me read your book. It's definitely one of my favorites and I'll be reading it again soon.

There are things in this world, and others, I may never come to understand.
Unsolved mysteries of disappearing bodies, deaths without a cause, and being taken while a thread of life still survives within you.
Then there are those things I wish I never came to understand quite so intimately. What it feels like to have the life sucked out of you, to know a darkness that whispers dangerous secrets in your ear, and to see innocent lives crushed at the hands of a little thing called a glitch.
-
"With every new sensation, every spark of an awaking muscle, the man before my eyes fades into a distant memory"
-
Touched by death is one of the most unique story I have ever read.
There's so much more to say but so little words to depict the feeling this book gave me.
T.L.Martin's Touched by death had woven itself deep in my heart, her flawless writing intrigued me & the way she unfolded everything piece by piece, It was an event of spectacular revealtions leaving me with a delightful experience, that only increased my Thirst for more.

This story gives you everything, talk about love, emotions, drama, dreams, horror, mystery - You name it, you'll get it.
-
" I’ve always thought scars were meant to represent strength; all this one does is remind me that I shouldn’t be alive right now."
-
Lou a small town girl going through big changes in her life, one of which was the death of her Grandma whom she was very close & her only family left, all she wants is to leave everything behind & start over.

Going through her grandma's roots may lit a spark in her dull life, but everything was going to change forever as death was waiting as an accident lands her into a lake, where she's trying to take the last breath of her life, vut what happens next is an inexplicable event, where she meets eye to eye with Death.
-
Her life was supposed to be taken. She was not supposed to land in a hospital with no memory of the lake.
It was presumed that her soul would be taken, but their fate twisted that day, a mistake had started a chain of events which only lead to destruction.

Death was a charming, brooding, captivating - He resonated an aura that would pull you towards him, mesmerizing you, a mysterious soul who'll steal your heart, but He was doomed & what he did on the lake started something so unusual that threatened with everything that he has ever known.
About Lou, I'll say that she's the most strong-willed, powerful, yet had fleetingly delicate personality, with lots of passion to save others. You see she was helper & a stubborn one too but what happened on the lake messed her up brutally, making her feel so many things tht weren't real.
-
"I’m alone, in a world filled with strangers and steel walls."
-
This story of Death & Lou is an enthralling tale of mysteries of the past. The dreams Lou had would be a link to something so brutal that it'll fill you up with lots of empathy towards Lou, Death and other people who had been roped into playing a twisted game by fate.
-
The outcome of which was something you never saw coming.
As a revival will cost one, but will effect on many.

His eyes close, and he draws a long breath. When they open again, they're colder than ever. "And that's where you'd be disappointed, Lou. There's no good to be found in Death."

Okay, so Touched by Death, T.L. Martin. Gosh.. There's still tears streaming down my cheeks as I write this. First of all, thank you T.L. Martin for this amazing book against for review! I'm still trying to gather my thoughts and go through all my notes even though it's been a while already since I finished reading.

Lou Adaire has lost all her close relatives, the most recent of those is her Grams. She decides to sell Grams's house and start from clean plate. But as she's driving through the storm, her car crashes down into Tuttle Creek Lake where she comes face to face with Death. From there starts her incredible journey at Ashwick, the small town where her mother was born, with Death and some new friends.

I'm sure we all have some kind of an idea about Death in our minds, and for me Death has always been the dark hooded man with his scythe. Never have I ever thought that he might be a dark haired hero kind of a guy, definitely not someone to like, to root for! But that's exactly Lou's Death. Dark hair, green eyes and a hero. Someone who wants only the best for her, want her to live full happy life until she dies of old age. And damn, meet my new book boyfriend!♥
Lou and Death, definitely my favorite pair ever. This is the kind of relationship everyone should have. They share some serious true love, they care for each others and they would both die for another.
This book has it all. Happiness, sadness, romance, anger, everything. It's both heart ripping and joy. Even though it doesn't all go as planned for Lou and bad things happen, there's still happy moments which make you tear happy tears and for counterbalance you will be tearing from sadness too. You will get your heart broken but you will also have a happy ending.

I most definitely recommend this book to all of you who likes paranormal books, whom likes romance. The romance in Touched by Death is anything else but easy, love at first sight cheesiness. It takes some time to grow and it will make you too fall in love with Lou and Death.

Thank you, T.L. Martin, for the opportunity to read your book.

The concept of the book really is what got me interested. Personalising death and making him out to be a compelling, heartbreaking swoony hero is a win-win to me.
I loved the h mostly because of her determinacy. She was not at all annoying and her ex, redeemed himself to be a good friend (not the usual asshole).
There is a perfect blend of mystery, romance, wit, and quirkiness in the story. In spite of it being a PNR there is a thread of authenticity as the book deals with moving past death, abuse and letting yourself love.
The chemistry between Lou (h) and Death(H) was a 10/10 for me.
I am a big romance reader so to me it's important that the couple belong together. And the both of them were meant to be.
Not going to lie I felt a bit teary-eyed towards the end, but not going to give away any spoilers. This is a slow burn romance, making you feel elated, surprised and a bit sad and I highly recommend it.
So get this book!

"You know, we all have a light inside of us. And the only person who gets to decide whether your light shines or not is you.”

Now I'll be the first to say I'm not the biggest paranormal romance fan, not that I don't want to be but the books I've read have disappointed me. You know how it starts, the premise sounds great and you're interested to know more but once you finish it you're disappointed because it's not what you thought it would be. This book however was NOT one them.

This book was so fucking refreshing it was like walking into the bloody ocean on a hot summers day. It's the type of book you have to read in one sitting because you just can't stop reading it, you just HAVE to find out what happens. This book was written and executed in such a way that left you questioning and when you think you know what's gonna freaking happen it goes in the other direction and blindsides the fuck outta ya.

It had a great cast of characters that were relatable and loveable. Ones where you care about what happens to them. Not many authors can make me love every single character in a book. But, this one did and boy am I fucking surprised. I am not easy to win over. So one point to you author! ;)

Other than being a hot, funny read it is also laced with some real deep emotions. Hello? It's a story 'bout falling in love with death, like there's not gonna be some dark shit going on. Be warned for child abuse triggers.

I've been craving for a good romance lately, from ANY fucking genre, I was THAT starved! And this book delivered and then some. It made me want to go out and find Death just so I could fall in love with his hot ass. Yes I'm saying right now, I am hot for the grim reaper. Don't judge me okay?!

Okay end review before this shit starts to get REAL weird. Just go read it. If you're a fan of new adult, paranormal romance or hell just straight romance this is for you. And when you're done we can start a death club or something. Jk

This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review. Also the first time really reviewing something 😝

wow, what a wonderful book! this is a real gem. I can't believe this is the debut novel of the author. there are no flaws or any errors, you'd think she had already published a handful of books and in my opinion that debut novel can absolutely keep up with the novels of some bestseller authors. it has a wonderful love story with lovable characters and a very unique and refreshing view on the paranormal aspect. I've never read something like this before. the mystery and suspense kept me enthralled from the beginning. the evolvement of the love between lou and death was eerily beautiful, almost magical. it's not often a book touches my heart like this, moving me deeply, with having a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. I can't find the right words to describe how I feel right now. I wish there were more books like this one. I'm very looking forward to read more of this author!

I received this book from the author and this is my honest review.

I cried. A lot. Happy, sad, even confused tears as this story unfolded. It was hard to put down. This book was well written, beautifully written. It was poignant and all too real, I could see everything happening clearly, it was like I was there in their shoes and I could Not put this book down. Granted I was forced to due to circumstances and went right back to reading when I could. I can't emphasize how good this book was. I just can't. If you read anything this year make sure it's this book. It is my favorite book this year. Seriously. Pick. It. Up. I'm even toying with buying the paper version for my collection. Seriously.

5+ Deathly Stars!

Touched By Death was amazing! It was one of those books that touched my soul in a magical way, and really made me reflect on my life and what sacrifices I would make for those I love.

Lou Adaire has lost everything she loves: her parents, her grandma, and her boyfriend. She decides to pack her belongings in her truck, and head to her grandma's hometown to start over. On the way there, her truck veers off the road and lands in a lake, where she dies. At least...she was supposed to, but somebody saves her. Not quite a man, not quite an angel. Death.

Death keeps coming around Lou, and they form this relationship that is full of sexual tension and intimacy. But, how can Lou fall in love with someone who isn't even a human being? Who doesn't live in the same dimension as her? Who can't be seen by anyone else besides Lou?

Not long after meeting Death, she begins having these recurring dreams. They are intense, raw, and very real. I literally felt the fear that the boys in the dream felt. Concurrently, she begins working for Mr. Blackwood as his house cleaner. Despite him being a grumpy old man, they form a very unique friendship.

Throughout the story, we see the push and pull of Lou and Death's relationship. I felt the emotions that they were feeling...their intense desire and longing to be together, but the heart-breaking realization that it may not be possible since they live in two alternate dimensions.

"Lou," he whispers. "You will never be mine. If you were mine, I wouldn't f*ck you against a tree in the middle of winter. I'd bring you to a warm bed and make love to you beside the fireplace. If you were mine, I'd wake up with you every morning and remind you of how it feels to be loved by me."

The entire story ended EPICALLY. T.L. Martin was able to connect and weave all of these things going on with Lou into a perfect story. By the end, I literally had tears streaming down my face as all the pieces fell into place. I was left in awe of Martin's way of creating such an emotional masterpiece. This is the first book I have read by her, and it definitely will not be the last.

“Death is an endless game. It takes more than one individual to keep up with the demand.”

This book ruined me. In the best possible way.

First of all, the plot of this story is extraordinary. It's filled with so many twists and turns. I was left shocked and surprised all the way through.

I love the way T.L Martin writes, it's fluid, and almost magical, transporting me into her world. The male lead in this novel was just... sigh. And he wasn't the only male I fell in love with; a side character Bobby had me rooting for him all the way.

Lou's journey to discover herself was beautiful and heart-wrenching all at the same time.

This is a paranormal romance that will be with me for a while.

SPOILER ALERT!!
If I sat in a coffee shop, holding a pumpkin latte mug between my clammy palms and facing T.L. Martin across a short tabletop to give her my review of Touched By Death, I would start with this: she definitely sets herself apart. Her style, phrasing, unique premise, ability to create tapestries with words--those are her stunning achievements that prove she can WRITE. There were other elements, however, that didn't work for me as a reader.

(Then I'd warn her that I'm not usually a fan of slow-burns, that I'm long-winded...would nervously take a slug of my pumpkin latte hoping not to shard the mug in my hands...then thank her for the copy she gave me in exchange for an honest review)

Here goes:

1.) POINT OF VIEW (POV): First-person-present is supposed to be a direct line between observations and reactions of our main character/s and the reader IN THE MOMENT, as events occur. In real-time. While Lou, our heroine, does such a beautiful job of describing her accident, Death's touch, the setting of Gram's hometown down to the season's chill, she has a tendency to skip key emotional transitions/observations I'd expect from any leading narrative to keep me invested in her journey.

Yet, as a reader reading first-person, instead of being included within the mind of my heroine...

For the first 70% of this novel, I was left to ponder things that didn't really occur to Lou or were swept away without proper development. I pondered whether Death had a name long before she did. I pondered why Lou's narrative was interrupted by dreams that seemed random and completely unattached from the overall story (the last 30% of the book clarifies, but I felt hint-less and blind prior). Yes, we find things out as Lou does, but her gut instinct and intuition didn't make her as inquisitive as I was--she seemed to have no problem dismissing those dreams and continuing on her way when she first started having them, whereas I was left wondering "Is there a point? How is this connected to her current situation? Why should I be invested?"

In Lou's POV, I was left to ponder more why's, too. ALL of her family had passed through Death's door--yet she didn't lend any internal thought to whether her romantic interest had met her mother, father, Grams (it was explained away by him, saying there are more of us out there--but the narrative didn't allow her important questions, questions I was asking). Did he know if their spirits were okay, or where they'd headed? Had he collected them for the Pearly Gates, or the dreaded Fires? Could he act as a medium and communicate with them? Can he even remember the souls he collects? Does he know, or not know for certain, if he sends them to Heaven or Hell? Does he have a conscience about any of it, really? Does he at any point, know she has no family left? Most importantly: could he have saved them, like he'd saved her?

She may briefly question WHY he saved her, true, but my mind was still reeling with, HOW is that possible? Will he get in trouble for saving her? Who are his enforcers for breaking "the rules"? Does he have the power to choose who's soul is collected, or will there be consequences? What kind of willpower does it take to rebel against a dictate from Higher Powers (the command to collect souls has to come from someone/something, right?) Who are his Higher Powers?

None of those questions are skimmed via her direct thoughts or the very, very limited dialogue between them in the beginning, even before his world is gradually revealed to her (and even after it is, a lot of my questions weren't even brought up or answered). My problem as a reader, was that my mind was left to ponder too much without definite guidance from my narrator WELL before I got any answers. Info wasn't delivered to me in increments that enticed, rather it confused. Reader-confusion can only last so long...

2.) PARANORMAL ELEMENT: I was left to ponder so very much about Death's world--"the rules," the construct, the limitations. He's usually confused about his circumstances, and Lou is usually flummoxed but too distracted by his hotness to dig for more answers. He's a part of a world we only get snippets of through Lou's POV, yet Lou's delayed determination (in the very end) to find out more, surpasses his curiosity about how his own world works. Her diligence to find answers (in the very end), outmatches his own need to dig for finding out why he is an exception to "the rules" the audience has few outlines to go by. How does he learn to physically appear/disappear? Again, who is pulling his strings?

Lou guesses and makes assumptions about his heartbeat getting stronger while hers is getting weaker...without any definite source of knowledge from Death's world. Heck, she even guesses Mr. Blackwood is right about there being different planes of existence--goes by feel, on how to resolve Death's entrapment. Those nightmares turned out to be very relevant in that sense. She only starts exploring the paranormal element towards the end, whereas I needed that to be her central focus from the moment he saves her. When she goes to the library, she doesn't take the opportunity to check-out a couple books on near-death experiences, or paranormal encounters, etc. Instead, she goes online to check her email.

While reading Touched By Death, I was reminded of a question that came to me when I read the Twilight series...strip Edward Cullen of being a vampire, and what characteristics are left? Who is he, without any of the paranormal? I had the same curiosity about Death.

3.) CHARACTERIZATION: I needed to see Death (as we find out close to the end of the book, his name is Enzo), possess characteristics I could identify with prior to the last quarter of the novel. Is he a moral guy? Does he have ideals he'd risk his life over? We find out yes, but only after he's pulling away from her (75% or thereabouts, into the novel).

How does he see Lou's world, compared to his own reality? Is there something reminiscent about her reality that he catches glimpses of, like he lived another life? Without open dialogue between the two characters, limited by her point of view and interruptions from the plot, I felt blind to his redeeming qualities--other than his other-worldly allure, his heated presence to Lou. Yes, there was steam between them, and their love scene is really, really WELL DONE, but that steam also blinded me to their connection.

What I wanted, was to KNOW he was as good as she FELT he was, but he came across to us in patches (due to such limited interaction between them for the first 50% of the book). His true characteristics are revealed when he pushes her away to save her life.

Okay. So. If T.L. Martin still had the patience to listen to me after I'd finished half my pumpkin latte, still holding it in both my palms and hoping she wouldn't notice my elbows shaking...

4.) ROMANTIC ELEMENT/DIALOGUE: I felt teased. Teased to death. Yes, there's an irony to that phrase. And yes, a certain amount of frustrating tease should be expected in a slow-burn. But as a reader, I kept trudging through the sub-plots and layouts of supporting characters with the anticipation that Lou and Death's next scene would be worth the wait.

Yet in the first 60% of the book, just as the snippets of dialogue between them found traction and seemed to gain purpose, and I would find some answers, he'd vaporize. They'd be interrupted. One of them would get too frustrated. There was too much tension between them...there was always some reason they couldn't fully connect on a solid emotional level, even for split seconds at a time. Most of it was physical.

Now, I can handle being trudged along--so long as there's payout. So long as I get delicious snippets of promise for more emotional connection. So long as there's juuuust enough info revealed to propel the story/romance/relationship. Yet meaningful dialogue between Lou and Death, when it was finally allowed to occur (in the very end), didn't flow for me in a satisfying amount or with an intense enough current.

Both were usually confused about their physical circumstances, "the rules," or Lou was occupied describing her surroundings/dreams/Claire's cheating boyfriend/Bobby/Jamie, rather than the emotional significance of the last scene/exchange she'd had with Death. When they finally, FINALLY, got it on--I dreaded that he'd vaporize. Vanish. Poof, gone, and disappoint me yet again. Their intimacy was interrupted by my nagging mind because I'd been let down so many multiple-times before.

In romance, for me, I need substance and bond between my hero and heroine. Trust. A certain groundwork. Doesn't have to be much, but it does need to be present. 1.) A push-and-pull dynamic, with one hounding the other with questions, vice versa. 2.) Brief, yet gentle exchanges, both revealing vulnerabilities--even if they're unaware of doing so in the moment (i.e. through observation from someone's POV). 3.) External forces that bind them together, with a mutual understanding of the others' morals/lens/perspective and a common mission. Etc., etc.

But I had to wait chapters in order to see them in the same room, or pinned against a tree trunk together. It would've eased my frustration, if she described his impact on her internally, viscerally, or if there was dialogue that built depth. But I was surprised at the ease in which Lou could transition from an "impactful" encounter with Death, to describing her surroundings or work or her nightmares, without ANY residual emotion bleeding into the next scene or chapter. Most of the time, she comes across as going cold turkey. All business about propelling the plot, not deepening her thoughts.

Lou doesn't ever question Death in depth about WHY he showed up in his invisible form while she was in the bathtub early in the story. Or when she stands facing the mirror looking at her shoulder wound from the accident. In romance, those are pivotal kernels of intimacy to plant mutual understanding, but she's not curious or inquisitive about his reasons behind showing up or reaching out to her--SHE fills in the blanks when she's introduced to his world and realizes how it absorbs identities and makes her forget she's human. It would've been more satisfying if they'd had a conversation about it. But as it reads currently, he's as clueless as the rest of us about his circumstances.

When Lou eventually does start asking questions about where he comes from, how it's possible, etc., Death doesn't know the answers. Therefore, we don't know the answers--worse than that, we don't even know where to start finding them, because our narrator isn't giving us the right hints or the right questions to ask and she's not hellbent on finding info. We're all clueless. Frankly, it's okay to have more questions than answers in any book--so long as I'm convinced something is being done about the mystery. Lou doesn't take an active role in seeking resolution to anything until she realizes she has lost Death and wants him back.

Closer to the end, she pushes him to express himself in a way I needed her to do from the beginning--because I've been limited by her perspective, her observations, and both are brisk. In order for me to believe she's capable of the love we see in the end, I need to see the promise of it in her character's narrative beforehand. Bobby, her ex, could've been swiped from the story completely and the word count used on him (and Jamie, for that matter), could've been used on relationship development and more dialogue between Lou and Death.

I found myself stuttering, "Wait, how can she just talk with other people and NOT be thinking about Death?" in some of her interactions with Claire, Bobby, Jamie, Mr. Blackwood. Or worse, I got negative, thinking, "Okay, this scene won't last long, because it's getting TOO good, TOO intimate" and sure enough, I was forced to wait another few chapters to get back to a point where I thought some of my questions would be answered.

Lou took her time to become invested in those questions I'd been asking, but she became a fighter in the end--which was sadly during the darkest moments of the story. Little snippets and clues, maybe Mr. Blackwood's books, could've been revealed along the way to keep ME invested...

Alright. Now I've finished my pumpkin latte, T.L. Martin is staring at me in silence, and I wonder whether I should take the flask out of my purse and offer her a shot or hand over my reader so that she can throw it at me. Because, let's face it, she probably wants to sock me good--which is the normal, natural reaction for any author (books are our babies!) being critiqued. My whole point in writing such a long review, was to explain my rating. It's one thing to tick the stars on the screen, it's another matter altogether, giving reasons for the star-count.

But my honest intent in any of my reviews, is to add perspective, dimension, and my singular take on the orchestras we call books. And like any orchestra, you can have the most talented musicians in the world all sitting on the same stage--but without a balance between each group of instruments (i.e. story elements, here), the music may not sound right. While T.L. Martin is amazingly gifted with words, I personally found an imbalance between the elements in this particular piece...

And hey, this is just one, measly (long-winded) opinion!

Wow, this book is just epic! I loved it so much, right from the beginning the story sucked me in and it was so difficult to put it down. Although, its pace is quite slow but still there isn't even a single boring moment. Also, there are enough twists and turns to keep readers on their toes. Every time you start to relax something totally unexpected and exciting happens and you sit up straight once again, giving your full attention to everything that's happening in this amazing read. I quite enjoyed reading it and I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking for something intriguing and unusual to read.
Lou has just lost her grandmother, her last living relative, and now she needs a break. Hence, her decision to sell the house and move to some place where she can start afresh. Unfortunately, her life turns more complicated than ever. After a near death experience she starts having weird dreams and strange feelings. Is she going crazy? Or is there a rational explanation for everything that has been happening around her? There is a mystery that needs solving but first she must find a job and make some kind of life in this town she is going to call home, for now.
The first thing that I noticed about this book was its name and cover, but it was the tag line that decided for me, I had to read it. And I'm happy to say that I wasn't disappointed in the least. In fact, the story surpassed my expectations. After a long time I've read a paranormal fiction which is giving me worst (or best, depending on how you see it) kind of book hangover. ;)
P.S. I received a complimentary copy of this book.

An incredible read

I haven't been able to put this down. I had to finish it even though I was fearful as to how it would end. It is a love story with a twist that is addictive and enthralling and makes you want to believe there is something more out there and at the same time manages to strike terror at that very thought.
What if Death lies waiting and this one time makes a mistake? Can love be enough, can sacrifice ensure a happy ending for our compelling lovers caught up in a drama between greedy dimensions and feelings so strong they ignore the impossible to be together?
This was a beautiful story. Connecting to the characters was instantaneous and deep. They are both such vulnerable people that our hearts cannot resist. The author maintains a wonderful tension between them that keeps us glued to every page but it is the story itself that is captivating and well written.
Can't wait to read more from this author.

Touched by Death is just as gorgeous as the cover is. Lou Adaire is all the right amounts of vulnerable and strong. Overcoming the grief of losing her grandmother, and trying to get away from her alcoholic boyfriend, you get lost in her journey in this new town to find herself.

I’ve read a ton of paranormal romance, but this story has a fresh twist, and those tender and sometimes confusing moments between her and Death are beautiful. It was a roller coaster of emotions as you find out who Death is underneath the surface, and there’s a good setting of mystery for Lou to work through. I was surprised by a lot of the twists, which makes you want to read it all in one setting so you don’t have to wait to see where it is going. I was so terrified that this wouldn’t end up with a happy ending, but it was perfect.

For those who have read Singing Fire...this is better. And Singing Fire was _amazing_, so that's saying something. I am astonished and thrilled with the growth I've seen between this book and T. L.'s debut novel. The writing style is smooth and captivating, pulling you in with a mixture of stellar description and a vocal character who is not only relatable but also hilarious.

The mystery in this story unfolds flawlessly, allowing the reader to piece things together all the way through, always supplying more details and hints to keep you on the edge of your seat. The drama is anything but forced and unfolds naturally with real people (who you don't like) and real people (who you love); something that is sometimes hard to create without the hated characters falling into a superficial category. But the star of this book is definitely the romance.

Lou's voice was active and a joy to see this story through. Her character was unique and relatable in all the best ways. She had real problems and real strength to see her through them. Though she did have something of an attitude at times (by far not the sunshine MC [that was Claire, another amazing character]), it didn't push me away from her. She was suffering and doing the best she could with the lot she was given. Her sense of humor also shines in the best way and I was left laughing to tears many times throughout this story

From the moment I met Death, I was entranced. T. L. has a knack for writing leading males whose mere mention is enough to make my knees go weak. They have tortured pasts, great laughs, and hearts of gold. Death is a perfect gentleman, while also hot, in a literal sense. And every scene with him is hot...in a literal sense. The romantic build is direct and intense, making me fall in love with not only each character apart but also both together. Their connection is clear in the supernatural sense as well as in the emotional. A piece I really enjoyed about their relationship is how equal it was. The characters were strong, and stronger together.

Lou was a strong woman without the feeling that she was being forced into "strong female lead". Death was a strong male without the feeling he was being forced into "dominant male lead". Each saved one another, each risking their lives for the other. Each had their own wishes, and each made their own sacrifices. I loved both apart but adored them together.

All and all, this was an amazing romance that has become one of my favorite stories. If you love mystery and stomach butterflies, this book is for you. If you love a good story, this book is for you. Seriously, buy it, read it, love it, review it. <3

Title: Touched by Death
Series: Standalone
Author: T.L. Martin
Rating: 5 Stars
HEA:
“You may never be mine but I'll always be yours.”

Touched by Death was nothing I expected and everything I loved. The writing was great and the plot sure as hell never left me bored. I'd give the cover alone 5 Stars, it's gorgeous!

The characters were all likable and I connected with most of them. The heroine - Lou - was a great female lead and I loved how human she was, meaning she made mistakes but still loved fiercely and didn't give up.
“...maybe allowing another person to give you strength takes a certain kind of strength in itself. To be able to lean all your weight on someone else with confidence in the knowledge they won't drop you.”

As for Death, his character was complex and very well-written. I loved how new everything was for him and how there was more to him than just a personifications of death.
“Yes, the way I spend every damn second of every damn day thinking about you is real. Yes, the way I wish I could spend every Sunday with you so you'll never cry again is real. The way I wonder what it'd be like to be here when you wake up, to hold you when I want to, to kiss your lips, kiss your neck - yes, it's fucking real.”

I found the book heartbreaking at times and damn it if it did not make me tear up. To say that it was emotional would be an understatement. The author perfectly captured emotions such as grief and fear, as well as created characters that were relatable and realistic.

I have not mentioned any flaws that did not work for me, but I honestly cannot think of any. Touched by Death was simply that good and it did not contain insta-love that would have made me roll my eyes (rather instant attraction or a sense of belonging, which I did not have a problem with as it was not overdone), for which was very grateful. Overall, the book surprised me and as I enjoyed Ms. Martin's writing so much, I will probably be checking out her other works in the future.

FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE AUTHOR THROUGH A GOODREADS GIVEAWAY. RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!

What if Death was more tempting than you could possibly imagine? Between her grandmother's recent passing and her boyfriend that's more interested in his next drink than he is her, all Lou wans to do is run away and make a fresh start. She decides to move to the town where both her grandmother and the mother she never really got to know were born. But, on her way to her new life, a storm sends Lou's truck plunging Tuttle Creek Lake and she learns exactly what it feels like to fight for her life. As her lungs fill with the icy water and things begin to grow dark, she resigns herself to her fate, only to be rescued by the most unlikely source of all. She remembers dark eyes and a commanding presence that draws her towards him. She knows he's supposed to take her and she wants him to. She knows he's Death. But, when she wakes up in the hospital she has the impossible memory of Death breathing life back into her lungs and her heartbeat returning to her chest. All Lou wants to do is move on, live her new life in her new town, but Death keeps returning to her. It's almost as if he is as drawn to her as she is to him. She can't get past his burning touch or the way his scars run far deeper than any she herself carries. Could it be that there's more to Death than meets the eye?

I'll be honest. I was sort of ready to dislike Death. At first, he seemed a bit stalkery. But, he definitely sneaked his way into my heart and I quickly found myself rooting for them both. I wanted Death to have his happy ending! This was the first book I've ever read by T.L. Martin and it definitely won't be the last. Martin has a talent for character development and writing characters that are real and likeable. They all have their "hidden scars" and you find yourself sympathizing with even the grumpiest characters. I loved how their backstories were filtered throughout the book. My only question is why does this have to be a standalone? I want to know what happens next!!!

Touched By Death kept me in suspense. It starts out with an ordinary scene and develops into a story of mystery, intrigue, and a burning romance to melt the chill of death. I don't want to spoil anything but I will say this: the ideas of death in this book are unique and the chemistry of the two main characters is enough to keep you flipping the pages. All I have to say is READ THIS FREAKING BOOK, Okay? If not for the alluring cover, then for the steamy encounters and a plot that keeps you guessing.

I am so lucky that I found this jem! I was in a bad mood lately, that I didn't find something interesting enough to read these days and suddenly snap!! I found this paranormal romance with a beautiful cover. I really liked the whole mood of the book, i loved the main characters and the story behind them. They felt real, not too perfect. It was a very emotional journey for me. I won't make any spoilers because you must read this book and let it make you "feel" everything.
