Doll-faced, physically perfect and pale, Sam isn’t human anymore.

He wakes up to find himself the captive of vampire hunters. Having no memory, he’s confused. His hearing is too good and he reacts strangely to certain scents. He attributes this to his hazy, drugged state.

His captors tell him otherwise. They call themselves the Clan, and they claim he’s the youngest vampire they’ve ever seen, a newborn only days old. He’s so precious that the vampires will start a war just to get him back.

If someone’s trying to rescue him, that’s good news, but Sam doesn’t believe in vampires. Even if they are real…what would such creatures want with an ordinary college kid like him?

Previously published as a serial novel, this is the full Sire & Childe first book. M/M Vampire Gay Romance. 80392 words.

Interesting concept with an execution that just didn’t work for me. Nothing happens in this book except for people having the same conversations over and over again. This would have been less of a problem if I cared about the relationship but I didn’t care about that either. Sam annoyed me more than anything. The writing also wasn’t great in a way that I found confusing at times. Numerous typos and weirdly phrased sentences that made it even harder to get into the story.

This is like the worst kind of fairytale. The one that’s creepy and evil, and also true.

I am not sure on which way to fall with this book. I’ve read several books from this author so color me surprised when the book starts and I think she has actually written a pretty dark romance..

A lot of authors these days like to color vampires in a different light, make them more likable, more redeemable would be a better word actually. They only feed from the willing or their bite is orgasmic and they won’t remember a thing so it’s not really too wrong... or blah blah blah (I still love those too though 😊) But Ms Eileen took them and made transients that live in run down places, that for the most part kill their victims, believing that since their numbers are dwindling that any victim left alive has a possibility of becoming a hunter.

Anyways back to my main point, I thought this might have been a kind of dark anti hero story about maiming and blood, and fledgling getting his bearings in a dark new world. Honestly that’s where the story was heading before it’s pretty much leveled out at boring me to death.

The beginning was exciting:
A man wakes up tied to a bed taking beating from people he doesn’t know, not even knowing what he truly is now. He thinks they’re crazy, but he does notice little changes about himself. I thought this part was well played out, I kept asking myself “is this fight of flight instincts or is this the monster lurking and calculating in the back ground.”

Anywho, once he’s rescued by his sire things start to slow down and get more mundane as we get the contemplating life stuff, to not be a monster? To be a monster? In this part I did really like the family dynamic of them really treating him like a baby. But again the Eileen left a lot open for betrayal or drama... none of which came...

And then the book kind of just ended...

So, I finished this and the beginning was fucking AWESOME. I loved it, it was so intense and intriguing I zoomed through it. I love the world building, and the culture of the vampires. They are much more 'monstery' in this and less human. Yet, you feel sympathy anyway.

The thing I didn't like is after the amazing beginning, stuff slows down and a lot of nothing happens until the end.

The other thing I didn't like was the issue of vampire food.

I also felt like there was so much that could have been delved into further. Whose edmund? what about sarah? And the clan, I really wanted to hear more about them.

I'd read the 2nd book, cuz it seems to be about those topics, but from what I gathered it ends in a cliff hanger and the author moved on to other projects. So I guess if the author ever goes back to this, I'll totally pick it up again but until then I'll move on to something else.

My main reason for DNFing this book in the 60% range*

What I am saying below is somewhat /*spoilers*/so beware!

When the main character is captured by the hunters, all you want is for the sire to come save him. Well it takes like 40% of the book for him to get "rescued" and that 40% is only like 1 night and day worth of time in the book.

When he finally gets saved, you are like "yes! Now go snuggle with your sire and feel better after all that's happened to you!" But no...he wants to stay away from his sire for the next 15%. And the rest of the book that I read was him fighting himself over not wanting to be a vampire... the main character basically has crazy mood swings.. one second he wants to be with his sire and is okay with being a vampire... the next second he is running away from his sire cause he doesn't want to be a vampire or be around vampires...

All around, I just started getting irritated by the repetitive "yes and no ing".. but maybe you guys will like it, perhaps I just have low tolerance for a character that just can't make up his mind.

So, I won't say that I don't recommend it... if it sounds like your thing, give it a try, the writing wasn't bad. (Which is why i gave it 2 stars)

Could have.....but...

This had so much potential, this could have been so good, the premise was interesting, the characters was intriguing, but something about it just fell flat. Womp womp. I don't know what happened, I don't know what it is but something about this just did not work. I think there was a lot of repetitiveness and just ambling through a half thought idea. I don't know. Glass is a hit or miss for me, strongly black or white, love or hate. This one is a no.

The type of m/m vampire novel I've been dying for. I love the hyper protective fragile newly turned fledgling stories that actually take time to explore this new world theyve been thrust into. The sire takes time to nurture and the childe doesnt 'miraculously' develop amazing skills seemingly overnight. I'm not too keen on the second in the series but this is a MUST read.

DNF at 26%

A whole lot of words for no forward movement. We spend an incredible amount of time with Sam tied up with the Clan in a single room, when that shouldn’t have lasted so long. It should have progressed from captive to escape to vampire confrontation at least twice as fast, since theoretically the relationships with these vampires is the important part, not Sam rubbing his face on upholstery. We spend forever with Sam in the car with the Clan, before finally the vampires crash it or something. I gave up mid-20 page scene of Sam stuck upside down in the van.

All of the tension is erased in these scenes because they just drag on and on and on. I’m a quarter of the way into this book and nothing has happened. I don’t think I’ll try this author again, especially with so many series left unfinished.

Yeah I enjoyed the read but it feels like it’s ended too soon. Not only that, but there doesn’t seem to be a continuation and Redeem seems to be a different story; even if it’s in the same setting.

Here there be monsters

Sam awakens to chains, strangers, and fear. Why have they kidnapped a college kid? They keep saying he's a child, which, at 20, sometimes feels right. But he is an adult. And the one isn't more than a couple years older than him. They also keep saying that they're coming for him. Who? Why are they so afraid? He has no clue what's going on but the sock gag and straight jacket are ominous. And then this... being jumps one of his kidnappers. And what was strange and scary dives right into terrifying.

Spoilers ahead.
This is different than most vampire romances. The vampires are monsters. They're monsters because of the humans. The human hunters use any softness against them. The vampires aren't castle dwelling billionaires. They're nomads, barefoot (which I like the explanation for), clinging to the fringes and their family. They aren't able to create offspring often, and the whole family takes care of those they do have. I liked all the details about imprinting, the dissonance, the memory fading. It's the littlest bits that make a story interesting. For a novella, there's a lot being said, even though there's few conversations. They aren't magical, all powerful, rich, elite. They're close knit, poor, barely hanging on, but hopeful and determinedly caring. I do have to admit the initial feedings were definitely unusual. And not exactly anatomically sound. Unless vampires get new vein paths, new vamps aren't going to get much from that area. Larger veins feed better: neck, thigh, elbow joint, wrist. Chest veins, decently sized ones, are buried under muscle and tissue. I get the imagery that was attempted, it just isn't practical without an explanation maybe alluding to increased veins in the parent in order to feed the fledgling. But that's my only stumping point, so, kudos. Glass did a really great job of transitioning Sam from human to other. Internally and externally. And of showing the human, humane, and monsters, of both races.

I went in a bit skeptical and I've been left feeling meh... Which sucks because I LOVE several other books written by this author. I think this just isn't my cup of tea from this particular author.
The concepts have their own flair to then and I really want to like the characters, even the "bad folks" were intriguing it all feels kind of unfinished though. Like something fundamental is missing and instead of being hungry for more I'm just left feeling empty. The only character and series of events that was even remotely satisfying was the big hick dude, I can't recall his name, getting his just desserts in the middle. I was rather happy to see him mangled and I presume dead.
The psychology of the main character, Sam, is very interesting and his distress responses had lots of potential but it all fell flat in the end. He was neither a coward I could pity nor particularly brave so that I could root for him like I would a typical hero and without any other defining features, which even the secondary characters like Zane and even Theresa displayed, Sam's character becomes blah and hard to get attached to. At first his rambling, stream of consciousness and overall panicky confusion is endearing and makes perfect sense given his situation and whatnot but it becomes exhausting as the book drags on. His wishy-washy acceptance/repulsion, while likely realistic, makes him frustrating as a narrator.
Also, stopping the story just when he seemed to finally fully accept his new life was very dissatisfying in a bad way. At this point I am tempted to read the next book in hopes it is better and will help to metaphorically get the bad taste out of my mouth rather than because I'm excited to see what happens next. That in and of itself is an uncomfortable place to be as a reader.

I don’t know what I read

The premise of this story is amazing, creative and gritty. It’s a dark vampire story with more hope and family in it than is sometimes comfortable reading. It’s also very slow, almost grindingly, and is bogged down by the writing style.

Sam is your typical college student who wakes up chained to a bed and held by vampire hunters. But neither him nor the reader understands that at first. You discover things at Sams pace, which means the story is slow as the characters never complete full thoughts or stories...making the dialogue very natural and frustratingly well written. You lose 40% of the book feeling lost though, and that’s a long time to trust the authors story telling capabilities.

In this world, vampires treat their Children like children. They call them babies, and love them so unconditionally that they’d do anything for them. That’s both beautiful and uncomfortable, and is the twist in this story that keeps you reading despite the slowness.

This story was apparently a serial, and the fact that the story seems to ramble show this. If the author wrote the story at once, I think we would have had a tighter story, much like her later books which I really enjoyed. I think you can see her evolution as a writer from this story to her later works, which gives hope to future stories.

I’m going to start the next book in the series, but I don’t know if I’ll finish it. The writing will need to be more buttoned up. But this story made me think, and see vampires differently than almost any other vampire book I’ve ever read, and that makes the story worth the rough writing.

This is book one of the Sire&Childe book series

Thinking that this man is down on his luck Sam offers Darius a burger that was left after the restaurant closes unknowingly this event set's into motion with him becoming a Childe/ a new born Vampire . But all is not right for the Vampires have a relentless enemy the Clan Vampire hunter with there modern technology haves the Vampires on the run . With the Vampires desperate for young Sam is considered very precious to the Vampires because Sam has survived the change were many have died before they could fully change . But there is a conflict between the Vampires on how to raise Sam Darius Sam's sire wants to raise him alone away from the Covern but finds this more difficult than he bargained . Not only is Darius having trouble feeding Sam but keeping him safe has become a problem too . And because Darius insisted that he alone be allowed to raise Sam without help from the rest of his covern's becomes a decision that Darius truly come to regret .This decision makes both Darius and especially Sam who's a new born and can't fend for himself yet vulnerable to the clan's. thus allowing the Clan to ambushed them and take Sam . Desperate to get his childe back Darius has no choice but to call on his covern for help they rescue Sam just in time because the Clan about to perform a cleaning on Sam in order to save his soul which would have killed him .

TL;DR: Everyone in this book (both human and vampire) is an absolute monster, and the book goes out of its way to remind you at least once ever 5 pages. Add in that the romance didn’t get deeper than love at first sight, and you’ve got a definite DNF from me. Morbid curiosity brought me up to 60% before I was able to look away.

This book is incredibly disturbing. Full stop. This book puts legitimately evil vampires against religious zealots, and the result is horrific. The fact that the vampires love their families doesn’t make any of this remotely ok. The fact that the description talks about the book being “sweet” in the description is incredibly weird. This is a horror novel and shouldn’t be confused for anything else.

It’ll make you think about war crimes. Both humans and vampires commit absolutely horrific atrocities against each other, and anytime Sam suggests something that could result in compromise, he’s told to shut up and get used to it. The bulk of the book is listening Sam’s thoughts as he justifies abandoning his loving family in favor and being complicit in many, many murders….all for the price of not dying. Not that he was dying in the first place. He didn’t love his college classes, hated his diner job, and was a bit lonely. Now THERE’S a grand rationale for shrugging off the murders of untold numbers of people.

And it’s not like the book lets you forget how dark it is. It constantly reminds you about how messed up this world is because the author constantly throws in references to the aforementioned war crimes.

I have really enjoyed other works by this author, but this one is the stuff of nightmares.

Almost gave it 5 stars for the tity sucking alone

Jkjk. In all seriousness, this story sits somewhere in the high 3’s for me. It’s been a few weeks since I read this story and book two, and there are some scenes I still think about and go back and re-read. That being said, this story drags at times and goes in circles. There is no way I would reread the entire thing over again.

I love the dynamic of the fledgling and other vampires, I don’t mind that the fledgling is babied and treated as a precious treasure because vampires are a dying breed. I’ve never read a vampire story with this dynamic, and it was interesting to see the transformation be explored in this way.

However, there are some details that I choose to pretend just don’t exist, ie: fledglings transforming into baby-faced versions of themselves. Because that detail, topped with all the vampires calling the fledgling baby and then the added sexual aspects just make things uncomfortable. I get he’s going through a transformation and vampires have eternal youth blah blah, but sam was an adult when he was transformed, it really doesn’t hurt the story to keep him looking like an adult.

I wouldn't mind more books in this universe. Book two ended with the possibility of more, but let’s retire the baby faces please.

Great start to a new series

I really loved this book, it was such a different take on vampires, how they are born and how they live. I loved Sam, I really felt for him as he struggles to come to terms that he is a vampire and what that means. The author did a great job showing the different views of the hunters and the vampires toward the war that exists between the two through Sam's experiences with each group, first as captured by the hunters, then as raised by the vampires. The two views are radically different. I also loved Darius and Zane, how caring and patient they are towards Sam and treasure him despite the times he acts out. There is angst, action, multiple car wrecks love and understanding throughout this book and I look forward to reading the next one and seeing what happens next.

I admit I only read this because I read the werewolf series she wrote but I am so so so very glad I did. Werewolves are more my thing but this twist on vampirism and what it means and how it preciously a "childe" is held was really amazing. I will be reading these again because this world really calls to me.

The characters are relatable, the vampirism is just plain interesting - a take I've never seen before. The hunters are easy for me to dislike because of the religious basis that they use to view what they are doing through.

What is it that makes this book so good? I think it is the way the vampires treat the fledgling. The way the relationships build, the intimacy of and the complexity of the relationships.

I will read this again and I highly recommend it.

I really liked this! But also...

Ugh! I want to like this book more than I did. I guess my expectations got in the way a little bit because it did not end up going how I thought. That is what I like from this author, the unexpected, but this wasn't my cup of tea, just not a satisfying wrap to this story. The first half really had me though, ngl! But the further in, the more disconnected I felt from the romance so...🤷‍♀️

So, this is for a very niche set of people. I was super entertained the whole time, but it is for sure not for everyone.

I do like the author's other stories. (Except for Trouble.) I will say though, I didn't think Sam's story was finished with this until I saw that the next story is about Brian. While I'm excited for that, I don't think I was ready to leave Sam yet. Oh well.

This book is a master class in how to write a story with many words where nothing happens. This book is a waste of time. This author is a waste of time for exactly the same reason. Plot progression is a concept she is not well acquainted with.

Morality vs Survival

There are some interesting questions about the food chain in this book. Who is "family". Who has the right to live.
