Mac has injured his back saving a young girl’s life and has been told that he will need to spend the next six weeks in bed. In desperation he asks the police for some work to keep his mind off his increased pain levels. He receives 23 cold case files, all brutal unsolved murders, and Mac gets to work. All he can do is apply his mind but that is more than enough. With help from the mercurial DS Kate Grimsson, a new recruit, and DC Tommy Nugent Mac re-opens the case of an axe murder carried out by a drugs gang. However there is a lot more to the case than initially meets the eye. But there is another cold case that Mac just can’t put out of his mind. He gives it his best efforts but will he ever find out what really happened?

Born in Birmingham too many years ago, like my main character 'Mac' Maguire I came to live in leafy Hertfordshire, ending up in a big village called Letchworth Garden City.

I have the same problems with pain as my main character and so the Mac Maguire detective mysteries were born out of a need to be doing something that wasn't a spread sheet at the weekends. However even I've been surprised at how my main character, Mac Maguire, has taken on a life of his own and I now see myself as being Mac's biographer rather than his inventor.

I've had many professions and started off as a musician. I played guitar professionally for some years before forming my own band and songwriting team. However, in my late thirties I concluded that I was probably not going to be a rock star anytime soon and so became a quality professional in the automotive industry. In trying to place quality systems online I became interested in websites and information architecture and eventually got invited to apply for a job at the BBC where I worked as a business analyst for Radio and Music. I am now retired and writing full-time.

Not the best of the Mac Maguire series - but good

I really like this series not just for the stories but because I really like Mac and the rest of the characters as well. However in this one, 23 Cold Cases, there were just too many cases and too many people to keep track of. Also, as we find far too often in these online books way too many typos! I do hope there will be more though, I'd like to see how Mac gets on!

Loved this

Another good read. Patrick's books are getting better and better. His attention to detail and clever storylines keep you on the edge of your seat. Not only does he provide with the evidence, he also tells you how he came to his conclusions. It never gets boring or stalls in the middle in fact it is fast paced, and totally believable. The ending has a surprising twist in the tale.

Mac rides again

I am now a devoted Mac fan he’s a gem and this author managed to bring life into boring old Letchworth. I spent a lot of years visiting relatives and am amazed at what obviously lay behind closed doors.

A real good series. This time there are 23 cold cases to try and solve while Mac has to remain in bed for six weeks. Each one is different, come can be solved some can't
