His world was difficult, but he knew it was better with her in it.What started as a simple wedding partnering was quickly turning into love. Lexi Ostrow has been in love with the written word since second grade when her librarian started a writing club. Born in sunny southern California she's spent time in various places across the country and can't wait to settle down somewhere in the French Quarter when she's able too.
Lexi has been a writer ever since the second grade in some form or another. Getting her degree in creative writing and her master's in journalism she couldn't wait to get a chance to put her fantasies down on paper. Her debut novel, Torn Between Two Worlds is something that was simmering in her mind since middle school and she's so grateful to put it out into the literary world. From paranormal romance to thriller there isn't a genre she doesn't love to spend her time reading or writing.
Reading and writing are her first loves but her passion for shopping, love for yummy food and her love for all her many pets. She hopes to one day help other readers fall in love with writing as she did.
“There was a spark in Jaxon Donovan that took her breath away. A draw to him that she couldn’t resist any more than a moth could resist a flame.” – Something Borrowed
Adrianna thought she had everything taken care of for her bridezilla of a best friend, then there was a knock on the suite door, another disaster to keep from the bride. The best man didn’t make it to the wedding, leaving the bride’s brother to step into the role; the disaster being that the bride did not want her older brother to be in the wedding. Jaxon Donovan had been Adrianna’s teenage crush, and upon seeing him again, she realized that he still was.
This story is a noticeably short and rapid read with only 136 pages in the book. Although Lexi Ostrow does a wonderful job at telling a short story, I found that this read had no depth to it. I felt like the story was very rushed with multiple tropes including a crush on the best friend's brother, military, long-distance, bad boy turned good, and romance between the maid of honor and the best man. I also found that the change in the attitude of the best friend towards her own brother was quick and out of nowhere. The spice and romance within the story were provocative and brilliantly written. With that being said, I applaud how bold the female main character was and find myself wishing I had her courage.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves the tropes mentioned above, along with it being a once-sit-down read with provocative scenes. Overall, I would rate this read 3 stars.
Content/Trigger Warnings: PTSD, war, profanity, and spicy scenes
Something Borrowed - Lexi Ostrow {I was given this book by the author in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own}
⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5 Stars)
This was a fun, cute, quick read. I do think it would benefit from another round of edits, just for simple fixes like repeated words within a sentence, use of “our” when meaning “are”. Small enough flaws that it doesn’t take away or distract from the story too much, just something I noticed.
Typical “I’ve been crushing on my best friend’s older brother my entire life but we haven’t seen each other for years and now we’ve reconnected and he admits he’s had feelings for me this whole time too” trope. Sprinkle in him being in the military and stationed in Germany but deployed to Iraq.
Not being in the military or being with someone in the military, I’m not the best one to speak on certain things but I wish the author would have dived into that more. There were constant comments as to how hard being with someone in the military is but I would have liked to see that play out more on paper. But then again, I understand it couldn’t get too deep because this was just a 150ish page book.
Overall, it was a good time. It did what any book is supposed to do and it transported me into the story.
Adrianna always felt something for her best friend's older brother, but the day he walks her down the aisle as the best man in her friend's wedding, something changes between them. Boundaries are taken down and all is fair in love and war, but what happens when a man has to battle both at once?
Something borrowed is a short read, and it was the perfect palate cleanser for me. I liked the connection between Adrianna and Jaxson and the difficulties they had to overcome. Both are loveable characters and I couldn't help myself from rooting for them. The author created a relatable story, and the storyline flowed easily. The only thing that stopped the reading flow at time were the errors; not in the plot but in the writing itself. Still, it was a nice story to read in between some of the other books I've read lately
The classic "best friends brother" story, meets the classic military romance, meets the wedding-best-man-maid-of-honor love story...there's a lot going on, but Ostrow mostly manages the multi-trope.
The start was rough, with multiple missed copy edits, a weird personality/tone shift from the best friend, and a bit of weird about said bestie's career, relative to the heroine's. The setting didn't stand out, but the author describes intersections and locations like most readers are deeply familiar with the area (New Orleans).
Still, at the core is a solid love story, requiring growth and mutual sacrifice to achieve a happy ending.
You know those traditions that brides do well this was something like that but so much better. Adrianna and Jaxon take you with them as they begin at a wedding but you get to see it grow into something different. Falling into someone's relationship as it develops can be intriguing along with emotional. This one slowly wraps around you as it develops. You also become attached to them as they get attached to each other. It was nice to step away and feel this grow and develop and finding out how it all turns out.
I received a ARC of this book for an honest review and honestly I can say this is such a cute story. There are some humorous moments and some sexy moments. This was a great quick read and will be one that I would have no problem picking up again.
