How can we learn a language quickly and efficiently, even if we don’t have time to study?
People used to say that it takes years to learn a language, and you need to invest a lot of money in courses, private classes and books. Are you also struggling with the same problems as other people who learn languages? Do you recognize any of these?

Many of us have families, a full-time job, and problems finding enough time to study. It’s difficult to ensure that we study regularly and make progress in the new language. As a teenager, Konrad Jerzak vel Dobosz wanted to become a polyglot, but like most of us he needed to deal with the same challenges: lack of time, lack of an efficient method of learning, difficulties memorizing the vocabulary, lack of motivation and the fear of making mistakes. He decided to analyze the methods of well-known polyglots, including Heinrich Schliemann, Emil Krebs and Giuseppe Mezzofanti. He took a close look at the approaches proposed by modern language learning experts Richard Simcott, Luca Lampariello, Moses McCormick and Benny Lewis.


This book, The Secrets of Polyglots is the result of his analysis of the methods developed by the greatest polyglots. Krotka ksiazka z radami, jak zabrac sie za nauke jezyka - moim zdaniem duzo „podstawowych” informacji, ale przyjemnie zebranych w jednej ksiazce.

Dobrze, że książka - taka jak ta - powstała. Autorowi udało się zebrać postawy i wzorce zachowań, które uchodzą za korzystne dla uczącego się i są właściwe (na podstawie doświadczenia poliglotów) na drodze ku zdobywaniu nowej wiedzy z zakresu języków obcych. Z drugiej strony Autor wylicza także najczęściej popełniane błędy. Choć wiele z tych sekretów jest bardzo oczywistych, to jednak - z różnych przyczyn - nie są stosowane rutynowo. W innym wypadku mielibyśmy całą rzeszę poliglotów... . Może to ten czas, by powziąć zdecydowane postanowienie?

Nic nowego, ale lubię taką literaturę, ponieważ mnie motywuję do kontynuowania nauki języków. Odkryłam, że autor czytał i się powoływał w tekście na książki o językach i poliglotach, które też przeczytałam i które mi się spodobały. Kolejna krótka acz treściwa książka!
Pełno rad od doświadczonego poligloty i jego historycznych odpowiedników - podobno jeden biskup znał 60 języków w stopniu minimum komunikatywnym! Istny czad!

Co tu dużo mówić, kolejne etapy poznawania języka, ładnie rozpisane i wyjaśnione.
Nawet podobała mi się ta książka i rady w niej zawarte choć większość znałem, przerabiałem.

Ale nie wiedziałem (bardziej czułem doświadczalnie), że najpierw lepiej studiować potoczną mowę a później książki - a ja na odwrót robiłem z początku...

I tu ma zastosowanie odwrócona zasada Paretto 80/20 - chcesz wiedzieć o co chodzi? Czytaj!

Uczenie się nowego języka nie jest łatwe. Prawda. Co zrobić aby było łatwiej? Raczej nie uczyć się samych słówek tylko w kontekście, np. Bela hiša je uradna rezidenca predsednika ZDA. Kwestia wymowy. Autor zaleca aby nie mówić na początku nauki nowego języka. Czemu? Bo kodujemy nie poprawną wymowę koleżanki z ławki. Mało tego uczymy się rzeczy, które możemy użyć z powodzeniem natychmiast.

This skinny book was a disappointment. No, I didn’t read it in Polish, but the English translation didn’t show up.

It contains a few hints about language learning, but nothing special or particularly wise. One had best look elsewhere for advice on this subject.

I have learned some languages and over the years, I have had to find the learning methods, tried and self-corrected it. I couldn't believe that my methods are similar to the writer's. Amazing!

There are some good ideas and it is an inspirational book.

I have not read many books on language learning but so far this is one of the best, if not the best. Why? because it is short, direct to the point and includes a lot of references. I love the fact that a book contains a lot of references because it means I can further my studies by going to those references and the book itself then becomes a reference to me because anytime I want to to remember something in context, I go to a section of the book and remember things in a context. The book then serves as a map of how to learn new languages fast. It does reflect the method that the author uses, but which is very agreeable to me and similar to the way I learn languages.

so, five stars.

Ok. Przepis, może zachęta, do szybkiej nauki języków. Najpierw przedstawiony jest zestaw porad, każda na kilku stronach z wyjaśnieniem, a później zebranie materiału w przepis na naukę. Po przeczytaniu mam wrażenie, że nauka każdego nowego języka jest możliwa w kilka miesięcy. Mam trochę wątpliwości odnośnie tego ile czasu zajmie przygotowanie 10 tysięcy zdań do nauki i ich wpisywanie do aplikacji. Reszta wygląda całkiem przystępnie. Czuję się zmotywowany aby zacząć z jakimś językiem.

Very good essay on learning multiple languages, and provides hope for older learners. I really enjoyed the anecdotal story style, giving examples of how it can be done correctly, and the stories of various polyglots success. This is a quick and easy read, and provided great techniques to build your own progress in learning languages.
I first read the book, then listened again to the audiobook. Either format will improve your understanding of languages and how to acquire them.

A good introduction to language learning, with good examples (though, I can’t vouch for their accuracy, as I don’t speak Italian *yet*)
It covered everything I thought I needed to know, and gave me a better understanding of these topics.
