The Parvac Empire sends Xavier, a genetically engineered hybrid soldier, on a mission to capture a dangerous weapons manufacturer. When he discovers a tech slave who is desperate to escape, he finds salvation from a lifetime of unrequited love. However, Xavier isn’t the only one who wants her. Her cyborg master sends his brutal AI soldiers to take her back. Will Xavier’s telepathic and empathic abilities be enough to save the woman he loves?
This was a great story...a lot better than expected TBH. I loved Sparrow and liked Xavier very much as well. This is the first story I've read by this author and I liked it well enough that I'm already planning to try more of her work. My only complaint...no notice when switching PoVs so you have to be aware.
Sparrow is a tech slave that works for a weapons manufacturer named Bishop. Sparrow has a mild form of autism and has a need for order and to make things work. Bishop took advantage of that and used Sparrow to engineer dangerous weapons. Sparrow was very young when Bishop acquired her and she doesn't remember much about her life before.
Xavier is a Laconian hybrid, a cross between alien races, Eriopis and Enyo. One race is telepathic and the other is empathetic and through normal methods, the crossing of the 2 races would have ended in a miscarriage but a scientist engineered Xavier and his brothers in a lab. Xavier is now sworn to the Parvac Empire and is sent on a mission to find a weapons manufacturer that's been making illegal weapons.
Growing up raised by AIs (artificially intelligent robots) and making weapons, Sparrow didn't know much about the world outside. There were other tech slaves that Bishop had kidnapped for their skills and through observing them, Sparrow learned to crave freedom. She was smart about it and after finding a crashed escape pod near the compound, Sparrow fixed it in secret until it was functional and she could escape. Sparrow does manage to get off planet but is having issues finding an inhabited planet when she encounters a ship. The ship is Xavier's and he takes her on-board and Sparrow is alright with it once she realizes that the ship isn't the AIs she's sure Bishop has sent after her. Xavier gives her medical attention and finds that a bond snaps into place between them, making him quickly realize that Sparrow is meant to be his woman.
Thankfully, Sparrow is attracted to Xavier and although she's interested in experiencing freedom, she's perfectly happy to do so with Xavier. Xavier knows that Bishop will be after Sparrow so he works on ways to capture Bishop and his co-conspirators while Sparrow experiences things. Sparrow has never been a girly girl and that doesn't change as on their first shopping trip, her tastes leaning more towards functional than frilly. What really got her excited was when Xavier took her to buy tech stuff that she could modify to help keep herself out of Bishop's clutches. This is easier said than done since Bishop and cohorts are crafty and have plenty of AIs and tech to use in getting Sparrow back. Xavier and Sparrow do have to deal with a good amount of danger and some drama as well but once everything is settled, they're together and starting on a well deserved HEA together.
I enjoyed this story greatly. I really liked Sparrow...maybe because I'm a tomboy and saw some of me in her. She was also nice and logical, both attributes I really appreciate. Xavier was a really good hero. He's smart and badass and was willing to go to whatever lengths it took to make Sparrow happy (and keep her safe). My only real complaint is the lack of warning in the PoV changes but that's basically it. Overall, I thought the characters were great and the story was really good and very engaging so I'd recommend it. :)
It was nice to revisit this world. The original series is a Reverse Harem series, but this duology is 1/1 het. I like Xavier and enjoyed having an MC on the spectrum with a hero that thought she was perfect just as she is. She rocks, and so did he.
I couldn't even finish the Kindle sample. Between the choppy writing and the fact that from page 1, this makes no sense, it's a big no right off the mark.
Our heroine is a tech slave who is free to roam the desolate landscape of the planetoid where she labors at a hidden secret weapons manufacturing base. This roaming is permitted morning and evening, because the boss thinks it increases productivity. Lol. Okay. A year ago she 'found' an escape pod. She is the only one who knows about it, even though there are AI guards and security watching all the time. Guess she's just lucky. She spends this entire year repairing the secret escape pod, and enhancing it with a guidance and propulsion system! With what, McGuyver? Chewing gum and paper clips?? Believability? Nah, eff it! It's science fiction, let's just make up any old s***.
As the story opens she is ready to escape. This is her one chance. Why is it her one chance? No idea. She's allowed to roam morning and evening, but this particular night, it is her one chance. No explanation. I suppose it means if she is caught she won'tget another opportunity, but it reads like this is the only opening, as if she has to go tonight or never. Making a mad dash, (in the dark, looking behind for glowing yellow eyes - apparently evenings are dark on this planetoid) afraid of being seen by the AIs, she gets to the pod. Whew. This is the pod which no AI saw her refurbishing for the past year, let alone magically installing a guidance and new propulsion system! "It's hidden under a layer of dirt and a pieced together cloaking system powered by kinetic energy." Whoa! So, not only did she secretly do all the refurbishing and installing, she built a cloaking system! Well, she is just amazing. 🤣 Maybe not, since she still had to cover it in dirt. . I guess she would have had to build the cloaking system first, before the other systems, alone in the desolate landscape, a poor slave under watch by ruthless AI guards. Geez. Miraculous.
Anyway, she gets off the ground and it sounds like she left the planet in an old style rocket blasted from Cape Kennedy. The G forces have her nearly crushed. Once clear, she worries anyone nearby may have seen the cloud of dust from the pod lifting off. Dust! Girl, what about the noise from a liftoff that nearly put you through your seat?
And this is all one page in. This book is crazy. It's like a story my kid would make up. It's told in a narrative of short blunt sentences and reads like a recitation of facts. And- It's not even on Kindle Unlimited. The ebook is $5.42 CA. Thank the stars for Kindle samples. Cannot recommend.
This series is very good on its own but the chance to branch out has made it all the better. We see some of our favorite characters come back, too. Handsome Captain Eric and Commander Bosh, Teagan's cousin and husband respectively, as well as a former guard, Gary. The sneaky, snarky, invisible guard who watched over Teagan during her pregnancy with Neema. It isn't required to read the original series to enjoy this book but considering the names tossed about and memories shared it helps you enjoy it all the more.
This book focuses on Xavier and Sparrow, as well as some new characters that I hope we see again. Sparrow is an unusual young woman who enjoys technology and weapons more than human interaction. She is brilliant but troubled due to her condition. Something I was interested to see in this futuristic setting. No spoilers but it explains her inability to look others in the eyes, interact with others and her brilliance with her designs. Not exactly normal himself, Xavier has no issues with his wounded bird and luckily his mission and his heart's desire combine. We learn a bit more about Xavier's abilities as well as see Sparrow learn to spread her wings. This book is a bit shorter but lacks none of the HEA you want to read about. And the ending is adorable. It will be interesting to see where this spin off series of the hybrid brothers takes us but I love that it ties back into the original series so that we get to visit Teagan, her mates, her family and her friends.
This one received a higher star count because the editing has gotten better and because as much as I love Teagan's tales they are so packed that it is a lot to absorb. This book was or streamlined and therefore easier to review. The previous series is at 5 books so far but I think would be more manageable if broken down into about 7 or 8. At least. But still very enjoyable and I recommend them highly.
This sci-fi romance was a bit flat but it brought across the heroine's Asperger realistically with some great awkward moments. There is a lot that happens with more characters than I expected--it didn't come across as a first book in a series. The ending was satisfying and now I am interested in more books in this world.
Another brilliant story from a brilliant author. This novella shows how Teagans guards are changing and how yummy they are. A great side storyline to the overall world Wendie built that shows how some of the characters are growing.... Very easy enjoyable read
