Perfect Understanding is a lyrical meditation on the challenges and even rewards of enduring a life-threatening illness. But unlike most survivor stories, which look back, Perfect Understanding was written in the midst of the crisis, before any signs of recovery. But then this really isn't a story of survival, but of living through the process of facing one's mortality. I wanted to write a book that would not be depressing, however, that would even be entertaining, and that might enlighten and benefit others, whether suffering from a rare disease like mine, or from cancer, or for family members and friends. I take the reader on an imaginary journey, a walk along a Sicilian beach I had visited before my illness, recalling the salubrity of nature even while facing its perils.
